Nova Scotia Surnames and Mapping Methods
This project shows methods of mapping surname data from 1940 in Nova Scotia, based on voter lists. The names were mapped in ArcMap to create a hard copy map and ArcGIS Online application, while a CSV database was loaded onto CartoDB to use with a Leaflet template, allowing users to query surnames and see their distribution. The idea was inspired by an interactive map of Irish surname data. The data for this project was transcribed from Ancestry.ca.
Geovisualisation and Analysis of the Good Country Index
The Good Country Index is developed by Mr Simon Anholt, a policy advisor and strategist. It measures the cumulative contribution of 125 countries towards the benefit of the world in the technological, cultural, peace-related, world orderliness, environmental, prosperous, and health wellbeing aspects, thus making up the seven categories of the Good Country Index (Figure 1). Countries included in the index do not necessarily have to be good for their own citizens, because the index does not look at the existing infrastructure that make up the development and dynamics of countries, but rather, it only focuses on countriesโ external outputs and resultant motives. On the contrary, there are plenty of other global indices (for example, Human Development Index, or Social Progress Index) that measure and rank countries in terms of their existing infrastructure. If we can substitute the category components of the Good Country Index with other global indices that correspond to the respective category component, we may be able to use the global indices as drivers to evaluate a countryโs โgoodnessโ.
This project entails a number of statistical methods for analytical purposes. Two types of analysis are carried out, the first type is non-spatial analysis which employs bivariate correlation to test for the existence of relationship between the Good Country Index components, and other global indices. Regression curves and decision tree rules are also obtained to employ predictive analysis on the Good Country Index in relation to other global indices as explanatory variables, with the main focus being made on the โMost Goodโ, and โLeast Goodโ countries. The second type is spatial analysis which includes spatial autocorrelation to test for the presence of underlying spatial processes by the Good Country Index, and global indices. If clustering is present, the degree of clustering is displayed. The cluster and outlier analysis, as well as hot spot analysis geovisualise the clusters, outliers, and hot and cold spots on various maps. Finally, grouping analysis is carried out to group similar countries into geographically compact clusters, and mapped.
This project focuses on exploratory analysis to find out if the use of global indices may be suitable as drivers to account for countriesโ โgoodnessโ in the Good Country Index, as well as geovisualisation through mapping of the Good Country Index, in relation to its corresponding global indices. It must be greatly emphasized that this project will attempt to investigate levels of association (or correlation) between variables, as the use of explanatory variables does not necessarily result in causation, hence no strong judgement is made when attempting to relate the Index with other global indices.

The Processing of the 1920's Survey Sheets of the City of Saint John, NB for ...
Back in the 1920s, Mr. Murdoch and his crew surveyed the entire city of Saint John with great precision. The original sheets were scanned, which were black and white, and were made available on the Saint John open source website. Unfortunately these were not registered and individual sheets. These survey sheets would be very useful for City employees and interesting for the public.
After georeferencing each sheet to its correct location and scale, they were reference to the city property lines, with the help of ortho photos and city streets. Then each sheet was cropped to remove the border and surrounding text, using the Image Analysis window clip tool, and added to a mosaic dataset. The areas of overlap were clipped in the same way so that the areas of more detail was visible. This dataset was the input for the Copy Raster tool, which created one tiff file for all the sheets in 1 bit. The final mosaic was cleaned with the Raster Painting Tool to remove any redundant street names. This cleaned mosaic would then be uploaded to the online interactive City of Saint John Map as a layer for the public to see.

Coastal erosion
This project examines the rate of erosion in Little Harbour, on the south-east coast of the Northumberland Strait. Coastlines were digitized using a series of airphoto mosaics from the 1970s to the present. The rate of change between digitized lines is measured using a script developed at the AGRG. Attributes are added to the data, classifying it by landform, waterbody, and angle. Results are examined to determine the overall rate of erosion, as well as to determine areas of increased vulnerability.

This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

Fix contours {End-of-Year Presentation Demo 1}
- 1. Fix Contour Elevation Values 27 January 2012 Repair of ~14 500 Contour Elevation Values in GIS.sde
- 2. The Problem โฆ In part of Kings County, a number of contour values are off by a factor of 10 (rather than 2200 m, highest should be about 240 m). The culprits appear on a TIN in reds, although values are 100 to 2200 m. The next slides show how I fixed this; will update GIS.sde this morning.
- 3. The Problem I created the TIN, using SDE-based contour lines (still saved on SDE with Backup in feature class name). Used โselect features by rectangleโ to select contours on screen; unselected a few with elevation < -5000 or > 5000 m.
- 4. How to Select โWrongโ Contours? One canโt use select by attributes (ie elevation > 200) as, although the distinct border in northwest is identified, a number of legitimate contours are selected.
- 5. The Delimiters Dataset Helps I used Definition Query of "FCODE" = 'DLNLOT' to reduce the number of lines on the screen; then used identify to determine the unique identifiers (uses field DELIMITERS_) of the seven tiles.
- 6. Convert Delimiters into Polygons Used Select By Attributes to select just seven tiles. Then Feature-to-Polygon tool to convert to a format suitable for overlay.
- 7. Dissolve to Make One Polygon Used this โsimpleโ (no optional parameters were specified) dissolve to create one polygon. Will use that polygon in select-by-location.
- 8. Select Contour Arcs The select-by-location screen that selects contour arcs that are within the dissolved delimiters.
- 10. Tag Altered Contours; Set Elevation
- 11. Results: Look for Anomalies in TIN
- 12. TIN This TIN shows a much nicer surface as there are no wildly wrong elevation values.
- 13. Results Contours have been re-written to GIS.sde: the original (wrong) data is contours_arcBackup; and new (repaired) data is contours_arc. There are a few contours with +/- 217 000 000 m as elevation; I will repair on a one-off basis.
