This document discusses the development of a fish counter network in Scotland. It analyzes technical, logistical and economic considerations for different fish counter technologies. The analysis will help determine the optimal counter options for different river environments. The network aims to provide good estimates of fish populations, calculate exploitation rates, and have broad geographic coverage including Special Areas of Conservation. Abstract; Condensate is a complex mixture of light petroleum hydrocarbons that is primarily used to dilute heavy crude oil for transport through pipelines. Many heavy oils, especially bitumen from the oil sands in northern Alberta, use condensate to dilute the bitumen to allow the product to flow to refineries where the oil can be upgraded. This is where the term ‘Dilbit’ was derived. Condensate is valuable; it can be recycled and reused and is frequently transported through the North American pipeline network. Pipelines gather at pipeline terminals where there can be multiple sources and multiple suppliers of different types of condensates. When leaks occur at these terminals, it can be difficult to determine the exact source of the leak, especially if pipeline integrity seems intact. GCxGC-TOFMS is the ideal technique to examine mixed condensate plumes as it allows the comprehensive fingerprint of the condensate to be determined and simultaneously provides substantial data to evaluate weathering and plume movement. In addition, the amount of chemicals measured using GCxGC-TOFMS can allow source apportionment of multiple sources so that allocation of the cleanup responsibility can be made. This presentation will discuss the use of GCxGC-TOFMS in legal case studies involving mixed condensate plumes. Real scenarios of condensate plumes will be presented showing how GCxGC-TOFMS data clarified the results compared to conventional analysis. This presentation will also cover the hurdles of using a novel and unconventional technique for litigation proceedings.

Web delivery of giant climate data sets to facilitate open scienceJames Hiebert
The world's best climate scientists are busy churning out computed projections of our planet's future atmosphere and ocean. However, major barriers exist to publishing geospatiotemporal climate data in an open and transparent manner. This is primarily due to the sheer volume of information that these data represent. A handful of variables for a handful of model realizations by dozens of models for scores of scenarios over centuries of time on tens to hundreds of thousands of grid points create big data. Secondary challenges include the novelty of high-resolution climate data and the complexity and sometimes enigmatic nature of climate data interpretation. Finally, scientific teams often lack either the background, the resources, or the mandate required to facilitate strategic data sharing, aside from dropping their output files onto an FTP site.
In the spirit of open data and open science, the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC), a regional climate services provider in British Columbia, Canada, has been making a concerted effort to use geospatial FOSS in order to expand the availability, comprehensibility and transparency of big climate data sets from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) experiment. This presentation will describe some of the technical challenges to serving large geospatiotemporal climate data sets over the web, including some of the nuances of climate data. Additionally, I will explain the requirements of the geospatial climate community, and outline the FOSS solutions that we have employed to serve big climate data sets over the web.

Natural Capital Accounting in the Caribbean eftec January 2021iweco-project
This presentation, made at a UNEP GEF IWEco Project Partners' Webinar in January 2021, gave context on the conceptual underpinnings of natural capital accounting, and the general process by which the accounts are built. Links to international initiatives, such as the United Nations System of Environmental-Economic Accounting - Ecosystem Accounts (UN SEEA-EA), which provide a standardised understanding of how accounts should be produced (such as by National Statistics Offices), and the Sustainable Development Goals, were also explored. The practical application of natural capital accounting in the Caribbean was demonstrated through the UK Government funded “Caribbean Overseas Territories Regional Natural Capital Accounting Programme”. This programme is building capacity for natural capital accounting in the five Caribbean UK Overseas Territories, working with local government departments, and other local organisations, to collect data and produce environmental statistics within the natural capital accounting framework. These statistics will be able to sit alongside other national economic indicators, such as GDP, to help support better decision making in the region.
Webinar - Transport and storage economics of CCS in The NetherlandsGlobal CCS Institute
From April 2012 – January 2013, a team from the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, CATO-2 (the Dutch national R&D programme on CCS) and the Clinton Climate Initiative, developed a financial model to assess the economics of alternative CO2 transport and storage options in the North Sea, based on common user infrastructure.
A steering group of major emitters with advanced plans for CCS in the Netherlands and Belgium guided the project and were the primary recipients of the analysis, aiming to support the necessary strategic dialogue between stakeholders developing CCS projects in the region.
Although the work was focused on potential projects in the Netherlands (Rotterdam and Eemshaven) and Belgium (Antwerp) in the short to medium term, the analysis and lessons could be useful to other regions considering CO2 network solutions.
In addition to the knowledge sharing report, a simple financial model based on public data has been made available for use elsewhere in the world.
The Global CCS Institute webinar that was held on Tuesday 4th June examined how the project was set up, the key lessons from the analysis and the steering group’s recommendations for near-term action to address the issues raised by this project. The webinar also provided practical advice for other regions looking to replicate the analysis.
