RRT use data and evidence to:
• Prioritise: - fish passage works
- creation of riparian woodland
- creation and restoration of hedgerows and boundaries to
benefit rivers
To ensure the greatest cost-benefit for the resources invested
To secure funding
• Engage with landowners, farmers and partners
To get messages across more easily, and encourage better practice
• Enable the public to find out about the Ribble Catchment
To increase interest in rivers, and increase individual action to conserve rivers
• Facilitate sharing of data, evidence and information between partners
To improve collaborative working
To make the most of limited funding opportunities available
To improve project design
To increase knowledge of problems and opportunities
RRT use data and evidence to:

Prioritising the removal of barriers to fish
movement, to better connect populations
GIS data required:
- EA barriers dataset
- Local knowledge of
additional barrier locations
- River network dataset
- OS MasterMap Inland
Water data
Use FiPEx (an ArcMap Add-In) to
automate the process
Can customise the settings to obtain whatever results you need!
For each barrier calculate:
- Length of accessible
watercourse upstream (until you
reach the next barrier(s))
- Area of accessible watercourse
upstream (until you reach the
next barrier(s))
RRT are producing a
guidance document
describing how to
repeat the analysis
Gives us a
starting point to
look at which
barriers it’s
feasible to
remove
Helps us to secure funding!
Using GIS-based tools and models to prioritise the
creation of riparian woodlands to benefit rivers
Modelling process:
1a. Creation of a GIS-based, SCIMAP-type tool that predicts the relative
risk of…
-Faecal indicator organism input
-Sediment (eroded topsoil) input
-Input of water from overland flows
…into each 5m stretch of river across a large proportion of the Ribble
catchment.
1b. Creation of the Keeping Rivers Cool dataset that predicts the level of
shade (and conversely sun exposure) cast on rivers (25m resolution)
2. Creation of a GIS-based model to identify priority stretches of
watercourse where the creation of riparian woodland is predicted to have
the greatest positive benefit on reducing one or more of the above risk
factors.

Risk factor Relative risk (0-1, low to high)
Faecal indicator organism input 0.000186
Sediment input 0.000181
Input of surface runoff 0.000188
Tool outputs (SCIMAP-type tool)
A dataset containing 444,442 points - one every 5m along every watercourse
Each point has a relative risk score assigned to it for each of the three risk
factors
- This score is calculated
based on the characteristics
of the catchment for that
particular point
- The score for that point is
relative to the scores
for all other points across
the whole of the
study area

The challenge:
To convert tool outputs into a dataset(s) that predicts priority sites for
riparian woodland creation, in locations that are likely to:
-Have the greatest impact at reducing one or more risk factors
-Have the greatest cost-benefit
The solution:
An ArcGIS-based model that:
-Identifies priority stretches of
at-risk watercourses for each
risk factor, and;
-Ranks them based on the
potential positive impact that
the creation of riparian
woodland could have on river
health

• Has proved useful for:
• Gaining funding
• Engaging with landowners, farmers and partners, resulting in
new woodland being planted
• You could repeat this analysis for your catchment
• SCIMAP sediment and FIO results
• KRC data
• RRT have written a guide on how to repeat this analysis

The Data Sharing Platform
Hosted securely
online.
Can only be accessed
via username and
password.
Access can only be
granted by Ribble
Rivers Trust.
Memorandum of
Understanding must
be signed before
access will be granted.
The Platform was designed to be simple and intuitive to use…
All resources are uploaded into a single ‘Partners’ Data’ folder on the Platform
Simple metadata MUST be uploaded with each resource, to help partners to search for
data, and determine whether it’s fit for the purpose for which they require it
Metadata are shown
alongside each resource
There is the option to upload a detailed
metadata document or Data Use Licence,
and link directly to it
If a resource cannot be uploaded to the Platform, but could be made available to partners
upon request, the resource and contact details for the data owner can be added to a list:
You can filter resources to help you find what you’re looking for:
Find out about open-source data, evidence and information, and link directly to it
Update partners on events that may be of use or interest to them
Start new discussions with Ribble Life partners, or participate in existing discussions
Share news that Ribble Life partners may find useful or interesting
Other features
Search for resources using keywords. Any resource on the Platform with that keyword
anywhere within it will be listed.
Data Sharing Platform
• Free to create if you have an Office 365 account
• Relatively simple to create the site to function exactly as you
want it to
– Happy to show you how!

Challenges encountered
• Incomplete, low quality or outdated datasets
• Useful datasets are expensive to purchase
• How do we obtain better quality data, and data that is prohibitively
expensive?
• There are loads of useful data out there that we just don’t know about
• Could we produce a directory of useful data sources?
• How could we encourage partners to value and use data more?
• How could we encourage partners to share data and evidence more?
• What’s next for RRT? Creation of a tool that helps us to prioritise the
locations for wetland creation (for the benefit of rivers, wildlife and flood
risk).
• Any thoughts or experience?
Thank you for listening!

Catchment Data & Evidence Forum 28/09/18 - RibbleRivers Trust

  • 1. Using Data and Evidence to Facilitate Effective Catchment Management Ellie Brown GIS Data and Evidence Officer Ribble Rivers Trust
  • 2. RRT use data and evidence to: • Prioritise: - fish passage works - creation of riparian woodland - creation and restoration of hedgerows and boundaries to benefit rivers To ensure the greatest cost-benefit for the resources invested To secure funding • Engage with landowners, farmers and partners To get messages across more easily, and encourage better practice • Enable the public to find out about the Ribble Catchment To increase interest in rivers, and increase individual action to conserve rivers • Facilitate sharing of data, evidence and information between partners To improve collaborative working To make the most of limited funding opportunities available To improve project design To increase knowledge of problems and opportunities
  • 4. Prioritising the removal of barriers to fish movement, to better connect populations
  • 5. GIS data required: - EA barriers dataset - Local knowledge of additional barrier locations - River network dataset - OS MasterMap Inland Water data
  • 6. Use FiPEx (an ArcMap Add-In) to automate the process Can customise the settings to obtain whatever results you need!
  • 7. For each barrier calculate: - Length of accessible watercourse upstream (until you reach the next barrier(s)) - Area of accessible watercourse upstream (until you reach the next barrier(s))
  • 8. RRT are producing a guidance document describing how to repeat the analysis Gives us a starting point to look at which barriers it’s feasible to remove
  • 9. Helps us to secure funding!
  • 10. Using GIS-based tools and models to prioritise the creation of riparian woodlands to benefit rivers
  • 11. Modelling process: 1a. Creation of a GIS-based, SCIMAP-type tool that predicts the relative risk of… -Faecal indicator organism input -Sediment (eroded topsoil) input -Input of water from overland flows …into each 5m stretch of river across a large proportion of the Ribble catchment. 1b. Creation of the Keeping Rivers Cool dataset that predicts the level of shade (and conversely sun exposure) cast on rivers (25m resolution) 2. Creation of a GIS-based model to identify priority stretches of watercourse where the creation of riparian woodland is predicted to have the greatest positive benefit on reducing one or more of the above risk factors.

  • 14. The challenge: To convert tool outputs into a dataset(s) that predicts priority sites for riparian woodland creation, in locations that are likely to: -Have the greatest impact at reducing one or more risk factors -Have the greatest cost-benefit The solution: An ArcGIS-based model that: -Identifies priority stretches of at-risk watercourses for each risk factor, and; -Ranks them based on the potential positive impact that the creation of riparian woodland could have on river health

  • 33. Secured funding from EA to restore hedgerows and dry stone walls Increases likelihood funding will be invested in restoring boundaries with the greatest cost-benefit
  • 36. Able to link to a map that filters out data for the sub-catchment of interest only
  • 37. Ribble Life Partnership Data Sharing Platform https://ribbletrust.sharepoint.com/Ribble%20Life%20Partnership%20-%20Data%20Sha
  • 38. The Data Sharing Platform Hosted securely online. Can only be accessed via username and password. Access can only be granted by Ribble Rivers Trust. Memorandum of Understanding must be signed before access will be granted.
  • 39. The Platform was designed to be simple and intuitive to use…
  • 40. All resources are uploaded into a single ‘Partners’ Data’ folder on the Platform
  • 41. Simple metadata MUST be uploaded with each resource, to help partners to search for data, and determine whether it’s fit for the purpose for which they require it Metadata are shown alongside each resource There is the option to upload a detailed metadata document or Data Use Licence, and link directly to it
  • 42. If a resource cannot be uploaded to the Platform, but could be made available to partners upon request, the resource and contact details for the data owner can be added to a list:
  • 43. You can filter resources to help you find what you’re looking for:
  • 44. Find out about open-source data, evidence and information, and link directly to it
  • 45. Update partners on events that may be of use or interest to them
  • 46. Start new discussions with Ribble Life partners, or participate in existing discussions
  • 47. Share news that Ribble Life partners may find useful or interesting
  • 49. Search for resources using keywords. Any resource on the Platform with that keyword anywhere within it will be listed.
  • 50. Data Sharing Platform • Free to create if you have an Office 365 account • Relatively simple to create the site to function exactly as you want it to – Happy to show you how!
  • 51. Why use data and evidence? • Prioritise: - fish passage works - the creation of riparian woodland - restoration of hedgerows and boundaries to benefit rivers To ensure the greatest cost-benefit for the resources invested To secure funding • Engage with landowners and farmers To get messages across more easily, and encourage better practice • Enable the public to find out about the Ribble Catchment To increase interest in rivers, and increase individual action to conserve rivers • Facilitate sharing of data, evidence and information between partners To improve collaborative working To make the most of limited funding opportunities available To improve project design To increase knowledge of problems and opportunities
  • 52. Challenges encountered • Incomplete, low quality or outdated datasets 2m DSM (LiDAR)
  • 53. Challenges encountered • Incomplete, low quality or outdated datasets • Useful datasets are expensive to purchase
  • 54. Challenges encountered • Incomplete, low quality or outdated datasets • Useful datasets are expensive to purchase • How do we obtain better quality data, and data that is prohibitively expensive? • There are loads of useful data out there that we just don’t know about • Could we produce a directory of useful data sources? • How could we encourage partners to value and use data more? • How could we encourage partners to share data and evidence more? • What’s next for RRT? Creation of a tool that helps us to prioritise the locations for wetland creation (for the benefit of rivers, wildlife and flood risk). • Any thoughts or experience?
  • 55. Thank you for listening! Any questions? ellie@ribbletrust.com 01200 444452
