‘FARMERS HAVE RIGHT TO PROTEST’
Supreme Court suggests Centre to put farm laws on hold
The Apex Court, which was hearing a bunch of petitions for and against the protest, said, “we recognise the fundamental right
to protest against a law. There is no question of balancing or curtailing it. But it should not damage anyone’s life or property”
Mohd Fahad
New Delhi: Acknowl-
edging the right of
farmers to hold non-vi-
olent protests, the Su-
preme Court on Thurs-
day suggested that the
Centre put implementa-
tion of the new farm
laws on hold while put-
ting forward the idea of
constituting an impar-
tial and independent
committee, which may
include experts like P
Sainath, to end the im-
passe. The Centre said
farmers would not
come forward for nego-
tiations if implementa-
tion of farm laws was
put on hold.
Heading a three-
judge bench hearing a
clutch of petitions seek-
ing removal of farmers
protesting at the bor-
ders of Delhi, Chief
Justice of India S A
Bobde said it would or-
der for serving of no-
tices to protesting farm-
er unions and give them
liberty to approach the
vacation bench.
“A protest is constitu-
tional till it does not de-
stroy property or en-
danger life. Centre and
farmers have to talk.
We are thinking of an
impartial and inde-
pendent committee be-
fore whom both parties
can give its side of sto-
ry,” the CJI said.
The top court said the
purpose of staging a
protest can be achieved
if the farmers and the
government hold talks
and “we wish to facili-
tate that”. “We will not
decide the validity of
law today. The only
thing which we will de-
cide is the issue of pro-
test and the right to
move freely,” the bench
made clear at the outset
of the hearing.
The petitioners con-
tended that roads had
been blocked by the pro-
testersandborderpoints
closed, thereby adverse-
ly impacting vehicular
traffic. This, they said,
was causing hardship to
people, including Cov-
id-19 patients, from ac-
cessing emergency med-
ical services.

TMC
DESERTERS,
BJP ROCK
BENGAL
CM’S BOAT
ith the Bharatiya Janata Party
holding all the trump cards, West
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee finds the ground slip-
ping beneath her feet. The BJP
has unleashed all the power at its command
to push Didi to the wall. First it was the Rash-
triya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Vishwa
Hindu Parishad which prepared the ground
for the party to launch its electoral campaign
built solely around what it called rising Is-
lamic influence in the state. State Governor
Jagdeep Dhankhar controversially kept
pushing the BJP’s agenda.
The infamous Saradha ponzi scheme scam
allowed the BJP to use the CBI to its advan-
tage. Interrogation by the CBI helped the BJP
to wean Trinamool Congress leader Mukul
Roy, once Mamata’s go-to-man, away from the
chief minister and come to its fold. Roy’s join-
ing the BJP was like taking a dip in the Holy
Ganga. All his sins were immediately washed
away. After the TMC suffered setback in the
2019 Lok Sabha election two of its legislators
jumped the ship and joined the BJP. One of
the MLAs was Mukul Roy’s son Subhrangshu
Roy. The BJP had then said that mass exodus
of Trinamool leaders to the BJP will take
place in “seven phases”, referring to the sev-
en-phased Lok Sabha elections.
Mukul Roy was apparently tasked by the
BJP to look for potential defectors and he
proved himself up to the task. There is a
queue of TMC leaders waiting to cross over.
MamataBanerjeecallsthesedefectorsgreedy.
The recent additions to the list are Suvendu
Adhikari, a powerful leader of the TMC and
Asansol’s MLA Jitendra Tiwari. Both of
them resigned from the party and are expect-
ed to join the BJP soon.
The BJP is simultaneously using strong-
arm tactics to weaken the TMC as much as
possible before the assembly elections. In its
ongoing showdown with the Bengal govern-
ment over three IPS officers who were alleged
to be lax when BJP president JP Nadda’s ve-
hicle was attacked. When the Union Home
Ministry summoned the officers, Mamata
Banerjee refused to send them. In the latest
tussle the Government of India ordered the
three officers to return to Central deputation
but the chief minister refused to oblige. She
said it was “nothing but a deliberate attempt
to encroach upon the State’s jurisdiction and
demoralize the serving officers in West Ben-
gal”. A similar confrontation took place when
the CBI was sent to interrogate the then po-
lice commissioner of Kolkata, Rajeev Kumar.
WiththeBJPleavingnostoneunturned,the
battle for Bengal is turning out to be a two-
partyaffair.TheCPI-M and theCongressseem
to have been pushed out of the contest. Soon,
it will be over to the Election Commission.

Listen closely to “I’ll Be
Home for Christmas” or
“White Christmas,” and
you’ll hear a deep yearning
for home and sorrow at
having to spend the holi-
days somewhere else.
During no holiday sea-
son in recent memory have
these songs resonated so
deeply with so many. The
pandemic has upended
holiday traditions, and for
those who eagerly antici-
pate annual visits to their
hometowns to celebrate
with loved ones, the cancel-
lations of these plans are
yet another blow to endure
in a long, grinding year.
Strip away the cursory
Christmas rituals – the TV
specials, the lights, the
gifts, the music – and what
remains is home. It is the
beating heart of the holi-
day, and its importance re-
flects our primal need to
have a meaningful rela-
tionship with a setting – a
place that transcends the
boundary between the self
and the physical world.
CAN YOU LOVE A
PLACE LIKE A PERSON?
Most of us can probably
name at least one place we
feel an emotional connec-
tion to. But you probably
don’t realize just how much
a place can influence your
sense of who you are, or
how essential it is for your
psychological well-being.
Psychologists even pos-
sess an entire vocabulary
for the affectionate bonds
between people and places:
There’s “topophilia,”
“rootedness” and “attach-
ment to place,” which are
all used to describe the feel-
ings of comfort and secu-
rity that bind us to a place.
Your fondness for a place
– whether it’s the house
where you lived your whole
life, or the fields and woods
where you played as a child
– can even mimic the affec-
tionyoufeelforotherpeople.
Studies have shown that
a forced relocation can elic-
it heartbreak and distress
every bit as intense as the
loss of a loved one. Another
study found that if you feel
a strong attachment to your
town or city, you’ll be more
satisfied with your house
and you’ll also be less anx-
ious about your future.
Our physical surround-
ings play an important role
in creating meaning and
organization in our lives;
much of how we view our
lives and what we have be-
come depends on where
we’ve lived, and the experi-
ences we’ve had there.
So it’s no surprise that
architecture professor Kim
Dovey, who has studied the
concept of home and the
experience of homeless-
ness, confirmed that where
we live is closely tied to our
sense of who we are.
AN ANCHOR OF ORDER
AND COMFORT
At the same time, the con-
ceptof homecanbeslippery.
One of the first questions
we ask when we meet some-
one new is “Where are you
from?”Butweseldompause
to consider how complicat-
ed that question is. Does it
mean where you currently
live? Where you were born?
Where you grew up?
Environmental psychol-
ogists have long under-
stood that the word “home”
clearly connotes more than
just a house. It encompass-
es people, places, objects
and memories.
Sowhatorwhere,exactly,
dopeopleconsider“home”?
A 2008 Pew study asked
peopletoidentify“theplace
in your heart you consider
to be home.” Twenty-six
percent reported that home
was where they were born
orraised;only22%saidthat
it was where they currently
lived. Eighteen percent
identifiedhomeastheplace
that they had lived the long-
est, and 15% felt that it was
where most of their extend-
ed family had come from.
But if you look at differ-
ent cultures across time, a
common thread emerges.
No matter where they
come from, people tend to
think about home as a cen-
tral place that represents or-
der, a counterbalance to the
chaos that exists elsewhere.
There’s no place like home for the holidays

Yet another hypocrisy of
@ArvindKejriwal ! He tore off
copies of the same farm reform
bills today in Delhi Assembly
which he had notified in
November in the Delhi Gazette.
ou must have taken out a life-
insurance policy to bring a
measure of security to your
family in the event of your de-
mise. We know, too, of those
who invest in real estate or
other valuable commodities –
precious metals, gem stones,
old coins, works of art or even
postage stamps as security in
the face of inflation. Still no
one seems to have perfected a
cure for this financial ‘disease’.
Each day, we relate automati-
cally to security consciousness.
Before leaving our homes, we
attend to bolts and locks. In pub-
lic, we secure ourselves to ward
off thieves. We show a security
pass to enter office premises.
These examples and many
more are now everyday hap-
penings. Yet, it is a fact of life
that personal security is never
easy. Injury or death can come
without warning.
Security, is a new ‘growth in-
dustry’, with a proliferation of
security cameras, sophisticat-
ed alarms, monitoring sys-
tems, trained guards and dogs
to protect us and our property.
Despite all we do, we experi-
ence a growing feeling of inse-
curity and live with an under-
current of fear.
In an age of prosperity, hav-
ing a feeling of insecurity, is a
paradox. It is like a house of
cards, bright and showy, yet
delicate and doomed to fall.
Security can be defined as
“untroubled by danger or ap-
prehension”. A state of feeling
safe and being free from worry
and anxiety. It means different
things to different people. To
one person, security is a job or
wealth, to another it is having a
healthy body and for some, nur-
turing a loving relationship.
Does fear of failing keep you
from doing things that you re-
ally like? Do you worry a lot
about what others think of
you? Are you uneasy about
meeting new people? Do you
fall apart when criticised? If
so, you are suffering from emo-
tional insecurity.
Feelings of insecurity are
universal. Many are prone to
feel inadequate or worthless
from time to time. Undue con-
cern with appearance, reputa-
tion or abilities can continue to
shake one’s confidence even
when poised. Self inflicted
mood swings arise due to our
making unfair comparisons
with others.
Insecurity causes a person to
overeat. It is an indication of
low self-esteem. The person
says to oneself, ‘I’m not worthy,
why should I care about myself
or my weight?’ Unreasonable
fault finding greatly under-
mines self respect.
Peoplewithapoorperception
of themselves are prisoners of
self. They are locked in their
thoughts. By reaching out to
others and showing kindness,
onecanbefreefromself impris-
onment. Receiving affection
and assurance from others help
to combat feelings of insecurity.
Misunderstandings, and be-
ing overly concerned about
having everyone’s approval
also contribute to having a lack
of self worth. By taking criti-
cism in stride and not paying
heed to all the words spoken
against us, we can keep our
mental peace.
Falling short in one area does
not make us a failure as a per-
son. Our sense of security is
enhanced by having our own
identity and knowing our true
value. It is not measured by be-
ing accepted by others. It is not
possible to please everyone, so it
is best to focus on our achieve-
mentsandareaswhereweexcel.
Verbal abuse causes mental
wounds that destroy one’s self
esteem. They take time to heal,
but leave scars. Not giving in-
ner consent to it can help one
avoid feeling inferior.
Trying to show oneself near-
ly ‘perfect’ to others can lead to
mental and physical exhaus-
tion and self blame. Guilt is
caused by assuming an unreal-
istic responsibility for the be-
haviour of others, thereby fos-
tering negative feelings.
Suffering “a bad case of the
blues” in silence, that persists
week after week without relief
for no apparent reason will not
help us to think straight. Sad-
ness and loss are natural. One
must avoid ‘what if’ blues and
focus on the more positive as-
pects of one’s life.
Repairing and keeping our
self esteem intact, requires
spending time with people who
care. Investing time to build
that trust is rewarding.
Learning a skill, can build us
up emotionally. Acknowledging
that worst situations do not last
forever and there is no chal-
lenge that is too hard to con-
front, can boost our self esteem.
Vital to happiness is a feeling
of personal dignity or self
worth. It requires learning to
cope with failures and disap-
pointments with cheerfulness
and patience. Taking small
steps can make a big differ-
ence. We will not be locked into
a life of persistent and debili-
tating negative emotions, and
will have the desire to live and
to be healthy.

New Delhi: Mamata
Banerjee today blasted
the centre for ordering
three top officers out
of Bengal, calling it a
brazen attempt to con-
trol her state by proxy.
In tweets, the West
Bengal Chief Minister
called said the centre’s
move, ahead of elec-
tions due next year,
was against the basic
tenets of a federal
structure.
The three Indian Po-
lice Service (IPS) offic-
ers were asked to re-
port for central depu-
tation a day after an
attack on BJP presi-
dent JP Nadda’s con-
voy near Kolkata last
week.
After Bengal refused
to send them, the Un-
ion Home Ministry to-
day sent another letter
asking the Mamata Ba-
nerjee government to
relieve the three offic-
ers at the earliest.
“The government’s
order of central depu-
tation for the three
serving IPS officers of
West Bengal despite
the state’s objection is
a colourable exercise
of power and blatant
misuse of emergency
provision of IPS Cadre
Rule 1954,” the furious
Chief Minister tweet-
ed. “This act is noth-
ing but a deliberate at-
tempt to encroach
upon State’s jurisdic-
tion and demoralize
the serving officers in
West Bengal.
This move, particu-
larly before the elec-
tions is against the ba-
sic tenets of the federal
structure. It’s uncon-
stitutional and com-
pletely unacceptable,”
she wrote.
“We wouldn’t allow
this brazen attempt by
the centre to control
the state machinery by
proxy! West Bengal is
not going to cow down
in front of expansion-
ist and undemocratic
forces,” the Chief Min-
ister railed.

Speaking to report-
ers here, NCP chief

bringing the PM

ambit of public ac-
countability, contend-
ing there is no explicit
clarity about the entity.
Thousands of farm-
ers have been camping

We are observing
since the last 22 days
that thousands of farm-
ers are in the vicinity of

Modi government.
The NCP demands
that the Prime Minister

sion of Parliament,

cerns and apprehen-
sions are addressed,
Tapase said.
He said some farmers
have laid down their
lives for the cause and
the BJP government at

succeeded in bringing the

was speaking to journalists in

Leader of the Opposition
Rajendra Singh Rathore
said that in the past two years due to
the rebellion of the party chief who
helped Congress win the election, the
government ministers and legislators
were forced to remain imprisoned in
five-star hotels for the first time for 34
days. He told that during this time the law

economic emergency came into force due
to deteriorating economic conditions. He
said that the state has shown
an increase in the number of
crime rate as per the statistics
of the National Crime Bureau.
The crime increased by 21.4
percent in the state and 30.7
percent in the capital. During
this period, there has also been
an increase in the number
of crime against women. He
