1. Identify at least 3 scenes/per movie in at least 3 out of 5 movies presented in the festival and look for a theory that is applicable in explaining the scene. Elaborate your answer Blue Bustamante George Bustamante left the country to apply as an engineer in companies in Japan and he ended up being a stunt man of Blue Force a character in Force Five. He thought his family would be embarrassed and knowing that his neighbors would spread rumors about him, George lied to his family, and said to his letter for his wife that he is an engineer in a company in Japan. The Theory that is applicable in this part of the movie would be the “Interpersonal Deception Theory” by theorists Buller and Burgoon because the sender which is George tried to manipulate message to be untruthful, which cause him to worry because his wife, June might discover his lies. Another scene is when George is in a coffee shop with his friend Roger, they saw a Japanese lady named Ayumi crying. He covered Ayumi with his jacket, After that, every time they see each other both really feel awkward until one day George decided to speak up and introduce himself to Ayumi and asked her if she wants to eat. What George did is, he reduced the tension they both feel is to start a conversation with Ayumi though they have language barriers. The theory that is applicable with the situation is the: “Uncertainty Reduction Theory” by theorists Berger and Calabrese. There were interactions between Ayumi and George, they attempted to reduce the uncertainty by being in a restaurant and starts to talk about different things. Kiko, the son of George and June was bullied by his class mate in playground. He always get Kiko’s lunch and his money. Kiko knew that there are four other kids who were also bullied, they said that instead of fighting back they chose to remain silent. After that they started to be friends with Kiko, and they discovered that Kiko also watch their favorite show, Force Five. Since then, they watch Force Five together and were able to discuss personal matters. They became close also imitate the characters in the TV show. The “Social Penetration Theory” by theorists Altman and Taylor are visible in the scene. When they saw Kiko, that was the time they started to develop friendships and as time goes by they became closer they even plan to face the kid who bullied them. Shift While they were eating in restaurant and talking about various things, Stella expected that Trevor would finally admit that he loves her because the night before, they were chatting online and Stella felt very happy of the things Trevor said. She also thought that even Trevor who is gay,
might fall for her because they have been acting sweet lately. Stella was surprised because what Trevor wants to say is that he is in a relationship with a foreigner whom he met at the bar. The fact that Stella’s expectations were violated by what really happened the only thing she did was smile and ask a couple of questions with bitterness. The theory that is visible in the scene is: “Expectancy Violation Theory” by Burgoon. It sees communication as the exchange of information which is high in relational content and can be used to violate the expectations of another which will be perceived as either positively or negatively depending on the liking between the two people that’s why when Stella’s expectation we’re violated in a negative way she had to hide her feelings so she would not feel embarrassed. Estella and Trevor are both in a same team in a call center. They started to talk about simple things mostly about office related things. Soon they became close to each other and started talking about Trevor’s gender preference and Stella’s past experience about her love life. Estella confessed that she doesn’t find comfortable being with males and finding it hard to make friends with guys because she grew up having female friends. Their “closeness” leads Estella to fall in love with Trevor. The part of the movie shows “Social Penetration Theory” by Altman and Taylor because the relationship between the two individual grows deeper based on the topics the two are talking about, from talking shallow things like office related works to personal matters like their love life. After the anniversary party of the call center Stella and Trevor sat down in front of a convenience store, they were talking about Trevor’s boyfriend. Stella asked if Trevor loves his boyfriend and after that, she wasn’t able to control her emotions anymore so asked again if Trevor love her. Stella walks away and left the place. She was hurt and confused because she did not know if Trevor really has feelings for her. The theory that is possible in the scene is the “Attribution Theory” by Heider because there is a cause why she walked away and left the place and that is she fell in love with him so the way she behaves seems unusual. Woman of the ruins When Sabel and Maria were rape by the people in their community, Pasyon angrily asked to point them out the ones who raped them, though Sabel and Maria are traumatized what happen they had to see all of the possible suspects not only because of what Pasyon, Olga and Sol said but also to give justice for the two victims so Sabel with her mother Olga and a scholar, Sol went to see all of the guys who are living in the community. The theory that is applicable to the scene is the “Elaboration Likelihood Model” by theorists Petty and Cacioppo because Pasyon, Olga and Sol had to persuade the two women to tell them the truth. The central route was also evident in the scene because Olga, Pasyon and Sol manage to convince and explain why they have to do it and consider the possible consequences although Sabel weren’t able to point out who really raped them. The way she behaves seems to be weird and say that all of the males in their community are innocent during the time they were investigating the people of the community
would be classified as “Attribution Theory” by Heider. There is a basis why she behaves that way because she is traumatized and at the same time feel pressured. Maria had returned into the Island after seven years. Sabel visits Maria to check if she’s okay and started to ask few things like if Maria really don’t remember anything from her past. Sabel keeps on talking and asking her questions to get Maria’s trust and to reduce the tension. The Theory that is applied in the situation is “Uncertainty Reduction Theory” because Sabel seeks information in order to reduce the uncertainty they feel. Olga the mother of Sabel, grabbed the alcohol from Sol why they were talking about. Sol quickly removed his alcohol from Olga’s reach and ask her first to gave him some candles and what Olga did was to get several candles and gave it to him so she could finally have a cup of alcohol from Sol. The theory that is applied in the situation is the “Elaboration Likelihood Theory” because Sol was able to convince Olga to get what he needs first and she agreed without taking deep consideration. He was able to persuade her with the use of peripheral route where he serves as the authority.
2. What message does “Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon?” try to present in the movie? How did the movie represent the Filipino people? What theory did you notice that was evidently portrayed in the movie? Elaborate The message of the movie “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” is all about the confusion of knowing the nationality and the identity of the Filipinos, how they were treated during the Spanish occupation and Pre-American occupation. What the film is trying to present is the reason why the Filipinos before find it difficult to identify themselves and also how the term “Filipino” change as time goes by. The people in the movie have different interpretations of what a “Filipino” is. The main character Nicholas has its own interpretation about being a Filipino, it is when you are born and raised in the Philippines. That is why he was confused when he met the Lawyer of the Priest he discovered that being a Filipino is being able to study and wear clothes that are formal and during the pre-American constitution the idea of being a Filipino was changed again. Nicholas represents the real Filipinos, while the other characters who have said the other meaning of “Filipino” represents the people who invaded our country. The film shows that even the Filipinos are confused with their own nationality, the main reason is that the Spanish occupation had already set their standards of knowing who they think are right to be called as a “Filipino” The identity crisis that is evident on the film can also be related to the current situation of the Filipinos in the modern period where we find it difficult to admit we are
Filipinos and support our own products The expectancy violation theory by Burgoon is evident in the film because the main character who is Nicholas or Kulas expected so much about his love for Matilde. His expectations of Matilde were violated for a couple of times that’s why he responded by leaving her at the end of the story. Another theory that is evident in the film is social penetration theory, where Kulas was able to build up relationships with the people he meets along his journey. The way he was able to communicate with the Spanish Priest (where he met him almost kid by bandits and Kulas ended up owning most of his wealth), Diding (where he fell in love with), his Chinese friend (whom he met on his way to Manila) and other characters moved from shallow to deeper and personal ones because of the time he was able to spend with them, they were able to talk about the details of their lives.
