BACR 2-2
I.
I am glad that Cinema One Originals chose Polytechnic University of the Philippines for the movie screening of six independent films. In this, I will discuss three scenes from different movies and identify what is the applicable theory for those.
The first movie is Kabisera which is directed by Borgy Torre and the movie was all about Andres, a fisherman who found boxes of meth floating in the sea. The REINFORCEMENT THEORY will be applicable to the scene where Andres told Jose that he’s the one who is hiding the drugs; the latter persuades him to sell it. He also said that it costs a large amount of money that Andres can use in order for his family to have a better life. Jose uses reinforcement because he wants Andres to agree to his plan. The second scene is when Andres, Pablo and Jose decided to drink liquor. SOCIAL PENETRATION THEORY fits in this particular scene because when Andres and Pablo was already drunk, they begin telling stories about what happened to them since they were teenagers and what struggles they have encountered that time. Due to the span of time, they became best friends and know a lot about each other. The third scene is when Andres’ behavior has changed from a good and loving father to an evil that killed some people for his own happiness. This is an example of ATTRIBUTION THEORY because a certain cause may be the explanation on why did he became like that,
The Second movie was Blue Bustamante wherein George leaves his family in the Philippines to work in Japan as an engineer but unfortunately, he got fired to his job that’s why he’s finding a job so that he will be able to send money to his family. When his friend Roger already found a job, he persuades George to be a part of it too. ELABORATION LIKELIHOOD MODEL is an example of this scene because George uses central route. He is thinking what people in the Philippines will think if he will be part of a TV series and his family might be ashamed if they will know that George isn’t an engineer in Japan. The next scene is when Saito
starts telling George some story about him even though the latter didn’t understand what he’s saying, the applicable theory for this is SOCIAL PENETRATION THEORY because it’s a good start to lessen the awkwardness between them and be good friends. Another scene is when June is sending George a letter. It is written in there the happenings in the Philippines and how are they, in exchange, George wrote a letter too that tells how’s his life in Japan and to tell June that he is fine there. The theory that fits in this scene is the UNCERTAINTY REDUCTION THEORY because George and June are seeking information about them to reduce the uncertainty in their minds.
The last movie that I chose is Woman in The Ruins which is about a woman who showed up in the island even though she is already dead 7 years ago. The scene that can be an example of SOCIAL PENETRATION THEORY is when Isabel and Maria became close friends in a short period of time. It is also because they are always together that’s why there are more likely to open up something about their lives. The next scene is when Maria has nothing to do to protect herself from Pasyon that is treating her like an animal; I think that ELABORATION LIKELIHOOD MODEL fits in this scene because of the authority. The Last scene is when Isabel already found out what Pasyon has been doing to Maria, is an example of EXPECTANCY VIOLATION THEORY because Isabel is in love with Pasyon and she thinks that the latter can be a good husband but she saw how hurt is Maria and her expectations has been violated because Pasyon is not what she thinks he is,
II.
“Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon” is one of the best movies that have been restored by ABS-CBN. This film was about the Filipinos who are easily fooled by the Spaniards and how they struggle in their own land because many of them are serving the Spanish. Filipinos back then are called Indio because it’s been explained that they have no knowledge or ignorant but there are also Filipinos who is trying hard to fight back from the Spanish in order for us to have the freedom that we want and our rights in our own land. That’s why Nicholas Ocampo is also confused on who are the ones that are considered as Filipinos and who are not. When he became friends with a priest named Padre Gil, his journey begins because he experienced the hardships like the others and he even met the people who became his friends that Kulas have someone to talk to about his story. The priest also help him in exchange of bringing his son to the Manila, he gave Kulas his house and a share in the tobacco company. He also asks Don Tibor to teach Kulas the Spanish language and explains that the ones who have the knowledge and wealth are the only ones that is considered as Filipinos. Even though the Filipinos are treated that way, they remained hospitable to the strangers that need their help and they are still united event the foreigners like Americans and Spanish are invading our land because they want to rule or they want to be the leader of our country. On the last part of this movie, it shows that we are already free from the foreigners and Kulas also realizes that rich or poor, even they didn’t have the chance to attend to school, the basis of being a Filipino is when you are born in the Philippines, you are considered already as a citizen of the Philippines.
The theory that is portrayed in this movie is the INTERPERSONAL DECEPTION THEORY because the Spanish gave us false information about who we really are and who are the real Filipinos. As per Nicholas Ocampo he soon found out that everyone is Filipino and he believes that this is true because he already seen the battle between the Spanish and Filipino in Manila.
