Problem Statement
Title:
Design of Safe Rotary Furnace for Non-Ferrous Metals
Aim
To design rotary furnace with enhance lining life.
• High quality molten material.
• To reduce heat losses.
• Long Life of refractory lining.
• High productivity.
• User friendly with less manpower requirement due to less manual work.
• Health and safety.
Objective
Introduction
Casting is the best and effective technique used for manufacturing
products. The important accessory for casting is furnace. Furnace is used
to melt the metal. A perfect furnace is one that reduces the wastage of
material, reduces the cost of manufacturing and there by reduces the cost
of production. Of all the present day furnaces there may be wastage of
material, and the chances of increasing the time of manufacturing as the is
continuous need of tilting of the furnace for every mould and then
changing the moulds. Considering these aspects, a simple and least
expensive tilting rotary furnace is designed and developed. The Tilting and
Rotary Furnace consists of mainly melting chamber and the base.
The Working Principle of a Rotary
Furnace
• A rotary furnace is a barrel-shaped instrument that is rotated
around its axis when performing heat treatment.
• The sample under heat treatment to be passed from one end of
the barrel to the other. This sample transfer occurs as the rotary
furnace rotates, and this rotation can also induce some mixing or
stirring of the sample.
• When the rotary furnace is in operation, hot gases pass through
the chamber to perform the heat treatment.
COMPONENTS OF ROTARY FURNACE
Rotary furnaces consist of some basic components,
including the
• Rotating Cylinder:
The furnace is made up in its external part by a cylindrical vessel made
of iron plate with tow truncated cone heads solidly bolted on the outside.
• Refractory material:
Inside the rotating cylinder and in contact with the iron plate there is refractory
material.
• Rotary mechanism:
The cylinder is rotated via an electrically driven motor, gearbox,
bearings and supports arrangement.
• Tilting system (for tilting rotary furnaces):
The whole complex is assembled on a special base in structural steel
to ensure a rational and rigid standing.
Spillage of melted metal is done by tilting the furnace
• Gas Hood and Burner:
The burner is generally located at one side of conical opening.
Combustion air is provided by a centrifugal blower fan. An exhaust
collection hood is provided to collect the exhaust gases
from the furnace. The hood is located above the furnace.

  • 5. Introduction Casting is the best and effective technique used for manufacturing products. The important accessory for casting is furnace. Furnace is used to melt the metal. A perfect furnace is one that reduces the wastage of material, reduces the cost of manufacturing and there by reduces the cost of production. Of all the present day furnaces there may be wastage of material, and the chances of increasing the time of manufacturing as the is continuous need of tilting of the furnace for every mould and then changing the moulds. Considering these aspects, a simple and least expensive tilting rotary furnace is designed and developed. The Tilting and Rotary Furnace consists of mainly melting chamber and the base.
  • 6. The Working Principle of a Rotary Furnace • A rotary furnace is a barrel-shaped instrument that is rotated around its axis when performing heat treatment. • The sample under heat treatment to be passed from one end of the barrel to the other. This sample transfer occurs as the rotary furnace rotates, and this rotation can also induce some mixing or stirring of the sample. • When the rotary furnace is in operation, hot gases pass through the chamber to perform the heat treatment.
  • 7. COMPONENTS OF ROTARY FURNACE Rotary furnaces consist of some basic components, including the • Rotating Cylinder: The furnace is made up in its external part by a cylindrical vessel made of iron plate with tow truncated cone heads solidly bolted on the outside. • Refractory material: Inside the rotating cylinder and in contact with the iron plate there is refractory material. • Rotary mechanism: The cylinder is rotated via an electrically driven motor, gearbox, bearings and supports arrangement.
  • 8. • Tilting system (for tilting rotary furnaces): The whole complex is assembled on a special base in structural steel to ensure a rational and rigid standing. Spillage of melted metal is done by tilting the furnace • Gas Hood and Burner: The burner is generally located at one side of conical opening. Combustion air is provided by a centrifugal blower fan. An exhaust collection hood is provided to collect the exhaust gases from the furnace. The hood is located above the furnace.
