Psychology research
 McClelland, 1961 - The need for achievement
theory states that people are motivated by a
need to achieve through setting themselves
challenging goals.
 Our app plays on the need of achievement
within people. It aims to motivate people by
allowing them to set themselves goals,
particularly amounts of water recommended
per day and it also allows them to see their
progress through a chart further keeping
them interested and motivated.
Psychology Research
 The goal setting (Locke & Latham, 1990;
Mento, Steel and Karren, 1987) theory
suggests that specific goals create a precise
intention and lead to higher performance
then general ‘do your best goals’
 Aqueous is influenced by the goal setting
theory as it sets very clear goals for users
 Once again, the graph acts as a motivator as
it provides feedback which as discussed
above is motivational for users.
Psychology research
 Intrinsic motivation(Ryan & Deci, 2000), refers to having an inclination or drive
to do something because it is naturally interesting or enjoyable
 To facilitate intrinsic motivation the following must be applied:
 • optimal challenges
 • effectance promoting feedback
 • freedom from demeaning evaluation
 Self-Determination theory states that there are three main types of needs:
need for competence, autonomy and relatedness.
 Meeting these three needs is said to promote self-determination
 Aqueous is easy to use promoting competence.
 The Process of downloading the app and using it promotes autonomy as the
users feels he is the perceived origin of their behaviour.
 The 4 main theories influencing Aqueous
◦ The need for achievement
◦ The goal setting theory
◦ Intrinsic motivation
◦ The self-determination theory
Health research
 • Edmonds and Burford, 2009 suggested that the
consumption of water can improve cognitive
functioning in children. Fifty-eight children 7-9 were
randomly allocated to a group that did drink enough
water and a group that did not. The results showed
that children who drank more water reported to be
significantly less thirty and performed better on
visual attention tasks.
 • Ritz and Berrut, 2005 reported that even mild
dehydration can affect cognition negatively. The
researchers elucidated that cognitive functioning
aspects such as concentration, alertness and short-
term memory are impaired.
Design research and principles
 Balance and alignment
Lidwell (2003) explains the importance of
alignment in designing an interface and
this falls under the category of
consistency
 Aesthetic and Minimalist Design
The importance of an aesthetic and
minimalist design (Nielsen, 1994) was
implemented in our design, by using only
what is necessary on the screen
Design research and principles
 Make the Interface Consistent/
Consistency and Standards
 Place the User in Control/ User control
and freedom
 Responsiveness, targets, (Navigation and
user input). First impressions. Stark
(2012).
 Colour
Requirements gathering,
justification
 Surveys
 Informal interviews with friends and
family members
User centered design approach
Prototype

 This is the link for the final prototype.
The team
 Alix: Design, Prototype, Tests
 Rachel: User Testing, Gathered feedback
 Ramona: Research
Ethics
 Information sheets were given to users
before testing.
 The user testing was fully explained and
the participants had the opportunity to
ask questions.
 A consent form was then given for
participants to sign before testing.
Draft 4..
 Due to the feedback received from the
last set of user testing and usability hub
testing, there were many aspects that we
would have liked to edit based on this
feedback.
 However there was not enough time to
redesign and create a fourth axure
prototype.
Thank you for listening!
