Error Analysis in EFL
Oct 2017
Introduction and stages
The following paragraphs will give you all the necessary information to prepare the
final assignment. Please notice that stages 1, 2 and 3 are individual and stage 4 is in
pairs.
Students who do not comply with stages 1 and 2 cannot proceed with stages 3 and 4;
consequently, they will be given the minimum mark.
• Stage 1: Listening Component (Individual work)
• Stage 2: Writing component (individual work)
• Stage 3: Reading component (individual work)
• Stage 4: Speaking component (pair work)
Stage 1: Listening component
1. Listen to the following audio recording:

Stage 2: Writing component
1. Use that information provided to write a reaction paper, expressing your personal
perspective on the issue covered in the recording.
2. The Reaction Paper must have the following characteristics:
a. Make sure you include a summary paragraph at the beginning, with the most
important ideas covered in the recording.
b. Each following paragraph must contain your personal views about one or some of
the ideas expressed in the recording.
c. The reaction paper must be typed in the template provided in 1.5 spacing.
d. The reaction paper should be about 500 words.
e. The reaction paper must be typed in Times New Roman 12
f. Please avoid contractions. Spell out such words as "can't" (cannot).
g. Inclusive language should be used in the reaction paper (for example: gender
references should be written as “he/she” when the gender in unknown).
h. No citations are necessary (within the paper)

1. Read and analyze the Reaction Paper assigned in class. It will be given to you by
the course teacher in class only.
2. Identify mistakes in the piece or writing.
3. Categorize mistakes in the piece of writing using the following categories:
Stage 4: Speaking component
1. Choose a partner to work with. Both students must be present in class when pairs are
registered. Absentees are not eligible and must not work individually. They will be
assigned randomly.
2. Prepare a presentation summarizing and categorizing errors present in both reactions
papers. It is important to work together in order to present one consistent presentation.
3. Prepare a visual aid (ppt, prezi, other) to illustrate or explain your ideas clearly.
4. Present the information to the rest of the class in fluent and accurate language.
5. Use the grammar concepts that you have learned in this course.
6. Refer to the frequency of mistakes found in the piece of writing and provide a possible
explanation.
7. The objective of the presentation is to explain grammatical problems and not
necessarily provide corrections.
8. Both presenters must be in class for their presentation. Absentees will be given the
minimum mark.
9. Order of presenters may be determined by course teacher.
10. Dress code: casual (no shorts, tanks, caps, sandals)
11. Marks will be awarded individually.
12. Both reaction paper and presentation must be uploaded to the e-portfolio

Final assignment 2017 instructions

  • 2. Introduction and stages The following paragraphs will give you all the necessary information to prepare the final assignment. Please notice that stages 1, 2 and 3 are individual and stage 4 is in pairs. Students who do not comply with stages 1 and 2 cannot proceed with stages 3 and 4; consequently, they will be given the minimum mark. • Stage 1: Listening Component (Individual work) • Stage 2: Writing component (individual work) • Stage 3: Reading component (individual work) • Stage 4: Speaking component (pair work)
  • 3. Stage 1: Listening component 1.   • 4. Stage 2: Writing component 1. Use that information provided to write a reaction paper, expressing your personal perspective on the issue covered in the recording. 2. The Reaction Paper must have the following characteristics: a. Make sure you include a summary paragraph at the beginning, with the most important ideas covered in the recording. b. Each following paragraph must contain your personal views about one or some of the ideas expressed in the recording. c. The reaction paper must be typed in the template provided in 1.5 spacing. d. The reaction paper should be about 500 words. e. The reaction paper must be typed in Times New Roman 12 f. Please avoid contractions. Spell out such words as "can't" (cannot). g. Inclusive language should be used in the reaction paper (for example: gender references should be written as “he/she” when the gender in unknown). h. No citations are necessary (within the paper) i. Read and analyze the Reaction Paper assigned in class. It will be given to you by the course teacher in class only. 2. Identify mistakes in the piece or writing. 3. Categorize mistakes in the piece of writing using the following categories:
  • 6. Stage 4: Speaking component 1. Choose a partner to work with. Both students must be present in class when pairs are registered. Absentees are not eligible and must not work individually. They will be assigned randomly. 2. Prepare a presentation summarizing and categorizing errors present in both reactions papers. It is important to work together in order to present one consistent presentation. 3. Prepare a visual aid (ppt, prezi, other) to illustrate or explain your ideas clearly. 4. Present the information to the rest of the class in fluent and accurate language. 5. Use the grammar concepts that you have learned in this course. 6. Refer to the frequency of mistakes found in the piece of writing and provide a possible explanation. 7. The objective of the presentation is to explain grammatical problems and not necessarily provide corrections. 8. Both presenters must be in class for their presentation. Absentees will be given the minimum mark. 9. Order of presenters may be determined by course teacher. 10. Dress code: casual (no shorts, tanks, caps, sandals) 11. Marks will be awarded individually. 12. Both reaction paper and presentation must be uploaded to the e-portfolio
