1. How to shoot using a DSLR
Louise Snell
The DSLR has 4 essential features that make them unique, firstly there
is the 24 frames per second which is usually used on feature films, this
setting is not too jerky but not too smooth either. Secondly there is
the shallow depth of field which focuses on the most important
object in the shot. There is also the third point, the recorded video
can be easily edited without loosing too much detail. There is also
the fourth point which can edit the lighting in the shot.
Before shooting your footage you must always check that your
camera settings are correct and edit them manually.
What lense you use is also important, an aperture lense is good for
portraits, landscapes, close-ups and low light shots. Shutter speed
determines how long the cameras aperture lense stays open. In
bright light you should choose a very fast shutter speed. Slow shutter
speed allows enough time for the moving person or object to
blur, displaying the motion. The ISO setting determines how
responsive the digital sensor is to light.
2. Cinematography
Cinematography is the art of motion picture photography. It is important to
have the actions, wardrobe and props all consistent from shot to shot and
scene to scene. Eye line is important because it helps to make things cut
together in a smooth way otherwise it can end up looking like the actors are
looking in the wrong direction. If you use a wide lense than it exaggerates
the distance between the foreground, midground and the background. If
you move the camera in a smooth way the audience will continue looking
at what they were already looking at, if you move the camera in an
unsmooth way then the audience will become distracted by the
movement. If you are doing a handheld shot and need to move then it
often works if the object moves too. If the shutter speed is slow, anything
that is moving will be displayed blurred. If the shutter speed is fast anything
moving will be sharp. When the lense aperture is increased the image gets
darker because the hole is smaller and less light can get through.

3. Montage
A montage is a technique in film where a number of shots are edited
into a sequence to condense space, time and information. A
montage is the process by which an editor has two pieces of film or
images and combines them together. Montage editing uses close
up’s, frequent cuts, fades and jump cuts ect. The montage I have
been looking at is Ellie and Carl’s relationship through time, out of the
film UP. The montage displays their relationship through time until
Ellie’s death. The purpose of this montage at the beginning of the film
conveys to the audience what has happened in the past in Carls life.
Towards the beginning of the film the audience see builders trying to
get permission to knock down his house but Carl refuses to let them
touch it. If the audience had not seen the montage at the beginning
of the film then they would not understand how much the house
means to him.
The montage firstly starts with their wedding and when they are
pronounced man and wife Ellie’s family are celebrating and
happy, however Carl’s family are just sitting their and looking very
unhappy which conveys how Carl’s family are very conservative
and do not have much emotion.
The montage then moves
on to their first house which
is all boarded up and does
not look great which
displays to the audience
how they have started from
scratch and once it is
finished it will be their own.
Once the montage has
displayed all the work they
put in when working on
their house they then show
the watcher the house
once they have finished.
After the watchers have seen the house being
made how they want it, it then displays Carls
and Ellie’s happy times.
Then the montage moves onto
where Ellie is told that she has sadly
lost her baby which may give the
watcher a feeling of sadness and
upset for them both.
The montage then moves onto
displaying their dream which will
later be displayed in the film. The
money pot is for them to save up
enough money to go there.
However a few things go wrong
on their way, stopping them from
reaching their dream.
Towards the end of the montage it displays Ellie
doing Carl’s tie for him every day and then when
we next see them both they are old.
The scene that grabs the audience’s emotion
is this final piece where Ellie is ill and then sadly
passes away.
