for advance publicity”

About Trailers 
 A Trailer is a short video that contains different clips of a 
film. 
 It’s used to persuade an audience to want to go and see 
the film advertised and the certain clips that have been 
chosen show this. 
 They usually contain dramatic clips that would engage the 
audience without needed a long amount of time. 
 Trailers vary a lot depending on the kind of movie and the 
amount of publicity the movie has already received eg. The 
hunger games trailers have decreased in time due to not 
much advertisement needed for the later films. 
 Teaser trailers usually come out before an actual trailer and 
are typically under a minute long. They are effectively a 
trailer for the trailer and are aimed to create a similar 
effect that the trailer would for the movie.
So where can we see a trailer? 
 Trailers are everywhere that we usually get adverts in a 
video form. 
 The most common place to see a trailer is in a cinema 
before the film you’ve chosen to watch. They always relate 
to the movie you’re watching as you are then part of the 
target audience. (eg. Horror movie trailers at the start of 
paranormal activity as the audience likes horror movies) 
 In a cinema the trailers shown are usually longer than 
normal as the audience is much more focused and 
interested. 
 Trailers are less common to be seen on the TV as they can 
be up to 5 minutes long but teaser trailers for big movies 
can be seen much more frequently. 
 With sites like youtube becoming more popular its very 
likely that trailers will be shown much more before youtube 
videos. They already are quite common and are still 
relatable to the video you’re watching, much like how 
trailers work in the cinema.
Where we see it and its effectiveness. 
In the cinema 
 Watching a trailer in a 
cinema is obviously the most 
effective way to use the 
trailer as the audience 
automatically fit into the 
target audience and will 
therefore are more likely to 
be interested in the film the 
trailer is for. 
 The audience themselves are 
more concentrated on what’s 
on the screen as there’s no 
distractions and that is what 
they are there for. This 
means that they will more 
than likely pay more 
attention when the trailer is 
shown. 
Online and On TV 
 When the adverts come on TV we 
usually turn over the channel or 
stop paying attention. This means 
that trailers on the TV are much 
less effective than in the cinema. 
 TV adverts are not necessarily 
linked to the show we are 
watching which means we are 
probably not in the target 
audience for that film. 
 Youtube adverts are very similar 
to those on TV. Not only can you 
skip them but things like AdBlock 
remove them completely. This 
means not only will we not pay 
attention if they’re there but we 
can remove them.
Trailers are a crucial 
part of advertising a 
film and are 
displayed anyway 
they can, although 
the most effective 
way is clearly in a 
cinema. They often 
bring in lots of 
people to watch the 
film and they can be 
very persuasive.

Film Trailers

  • 2. A TRAILER IS “A series of extracts from a film or broadcast, used for advance publicity” - www.oxforddictionaries.com
  • 3. About Trailers  A Trailer is a short video that contains different clips of a film.  It’s used to persuade an audience to want to go and see the film advertised and the certain clips that have been chosen show this.  They usually contain dramatic clips that would engage the audience without needed a long amount of time.  Trailers vary a lot depending on the kind of movie and the amount of publicity the movie has already received eg. The hunger games trailers have decreased in time due to not much advertisement needed for the later films.  Teaser trailers usually come out before an actual trailer and are typically under a minute long. They are effectively a trailer for the trailer and are aimed to create a similar effect that the trailer would for the movie.
  • 4. So where can we see a trailer?  Trailers are everywhere that we usually get adverts in a video form.  The most common place to see a trailer is in a cinema before the film you’ve chosen to watch. They always relate to the movie you’re watching as you are then part of the target audience. (eg. Horror movie trailers at the start of paranormal activity as the audience likes horror movies)  In a cinema the trailers shown are usually longer than normal as the audience is much more focused and interested.  Trailers are less common to be seen on the TV as they can be up to 5 minutes long but teaser trailers for big movies can be seen much more frequently.  With sites like youtube becoming more popular its very likely that trailers will be shown much more before youtube videos. They already are quite common and are still relatable to the video you’re watching, much like how trailers work in the cinema.
  • 5. Where we see it and its effectiveness. In the cinema  Watching a trailer in a cinema is obviously the most effective way to use the trailer as the audience automatically fit into the target audience and will therefore are more likely to be interested in the film the trailer is for.  The audience themselves are more concentrated on what’s on the screen as there’s no distractions and that is what they are there for. This means that they will more than likely pay more attention when the trailer is shown. Online and On TV  When the adverts come on TV we usually turn over the channel or stop paying attention. This means that trailers on the TV are much less effective than in the cinema.  TV adverts are not necessarily linked to the show we are watching which means we are probably not in the target audience for that film.  Youtube adverts are very similar to those on TV. Not only can you skip them but things like AdBlock remove them completely. This means not only will we not pay attention if they’re there but we can remove them.
  • 6. Trailers are a crucial part of advertising a film and are displayed anyway they can, although the most effective way is clearly in a cinema. They often bring in lots of people to watch the film and they can be very persuasive.
