What are film trailers and what are they for?
A film trailer is an advertisement method to promote a film. Usually played at a cinema
which has now expanded to online and on DVD’S, they show small clips and snippets of
the film to intrigue individuals to watch the film. They do this buy showing small parts of
the best bits of films without giving away the full plot of the film so that it reveals
enough to make people want to watch it.
Trailers may have three-act structure..
Beginning act lays out the premise of the story
The middle adds onto the concept of the story and highlights and ends with a dramatic
climax
The last part is usually a strong and significant selection of music and will consist of a
montage of clips and moments from within the film (this could also include a cast run)
Why do we have trailers?
We have trailers to gain insight on a movie before planning on watching it . Although
there is a debate arguing if they are truthful or misleading, we still get to see clips and
sequences from the movie, plus creative edits. Clips are usually taken from the funny or
exciting parts that the audience would want to find out more about. It reaches a larger
audience on who is going to see the film and can gain more interested.
Where are trailers shown?
Originally trailers where more comely shown at the end of a feature film screening,
however this provided not to be the most effective as people begin to leave at the end
of the movie and now they are shown at the beginning of films. Other ways for trailers
to be shown have become more popular like in DVD’S and Blue rays. Furthermore you
can watch them online, like on social media and sometimes they are played before
YouTube videos. Another method trailers are shown is on add breaks on the TV which

interest is spiked again by the new fresh trailer that comes out months later.
