What is an independent film company?
An independent film company is a small company who is not
part of a conglomerate. They have a lower budget than big
branded names and target their films to a niche market.
E.g. Calamity Films, HeyDay Films
What is a conglomerate film company?
A conglomerate film company is a large (usually Hollywood)
company that is both horizontally and vertically integrated
to own companies in charge of all aspects of the production
cycle. They target their films to the mass market as they
have the resources and money to do so.
E.g. Disney
 20th Century Fox like to “draw inspiration
from real life” or “bring to the screen beloved
works of literature”.
Our idea would fit into their ethos and audience
as it relates to real life situations due to our
chosen genre which would be able to attract
the mass market due to the range of
characters.
http://www.fox.co.uk/about
 Universal has been known for its diverse ranges
of films. These include classics e.g. Jaws
 They also produce high-concept comedies
E.g. Bruce Almighty
 Franchises
E.g Back to the Future
 Universal began an all-audience family film
business with Illumination Entertainment.
Our idea could fit in with their ethos and audience
as it will appeal to a wide range of people (despite
our target market of 15-24 year olds.
http://www.universalpictures.co.uk/about-us
 “Lionsgate is a leading global entertainment company
with a strong and diversified presence in motion
picture production and distribution…”
 WithYoung Adult franchises and a string of recent box
office successes the Company is poised to generate
over $1 billion at the domestic box office and another
$1 billion internationally for the second year in a row.
Our idea would fit in with their ethos and audience as
our product is aimed at young adults (15-24) which fits
into both the companies successful genre and their
target market.
http://www.lionsgate.com/corporate/
 Founded in 1983,WorkingTitle has made over 100
films that have grossed over $6 billion worldwide.
 Its creates an extensive and diverse range of
productions in film, theatre and television.
Our idea is suitable for their ethos as they are a British
company (that works with a USA conglomerate)
meaning that they are more likely to work with British
film makers. They are also well known for typical rom-
coms of which our idea shares some elements so it
would fit in with their film style.
https://www.workingtitlefilms.com/about
 The company’s mission is to create and
distribute commercially driven independent
cinema.
 The Films span a range of genres and audience
taste.
Our idea would fit into their ethos as they are a UK
independent company who would be more likely
to produce my film. Not only this but they produce
a range of genres for a range of audiences
meaning it is unlikely that they would reject my
idea.

The film product cycle has four main stages:
 Film Production - The casting and filming of the
actual production.
 Film Distribution – Film reels are produced and sent to
as many cinemas as possible.
 Film Exhibition – Getting the film into multiplex
cinemas and showed to the public.
 Film Marketing – Advertise the film as widely as
possible.
My production would fit into the marketing stage as a
teaser trailer is used to drawn in the audience for the
first time and build up anticipation for the product.
