Research and Planning
PREPARING FOR Q1A
Primary Research – Primary research is research that you do yourself to
collect specific data that will fully suit your desired question.
Secondary Research - Secondary research is research that someone else has
done but you can access their findings.
Qualitative Research – Collected through open questions which result in
opinions and beliefs rather than statistical data.
Quantitative Research – Collected through closed questions which results in
statistical information that you can easily put into graphs.
DEFINITION
It is important to carry out research before making a media production as it
allows you to not only understand the product you are creating a greater depth
but also understanding which elements are already in the market. There is also
the importance in understanding the industry and those who are involved with
the process. By completing thorough research it allows the planning stage to
be a lot easier as you now have an understanding of the conventions of the
product you are creating so you can develop your ideas to fit the product and
genre but also figure out how you can challenge the conventions to make your
product more original.

FORMS OF RESEARCH
I found internet research to be most useful in this task as it enabled us to look
at similar texts easier to establish the codes and conventions of the genre we
decided to recreate. It also allowed us easy access to information on the
industry as a whole to have a better understanding of how our production (if
real) would fit into the market.
However, focus groups were also useful as they enabled us to collect
qualitative data from our target audience to figure out what they expected to
see from our genre and what they liked and disliked about our chosen
storyline which allowed us to develop our plans before the production stage.
They were also helpful in enabling us to find out how our final production
could be improved in the post production and evaluation stages.
MOST USEFUL
I could have used digital media more in my research by conducting more video
and image based presentations to get my finding across as well as using more
examples in terms of creating techniques I like rather than just a transition
that I recreated.
However, I did conduct video responses for my audience feedback which
enabled me to have easy access to specific information on what my target
audience look for in my chosen genre as well as presenting the rest of my
work using different online formats such as emaze, prezi and powtoon which
makes the research more interactive for the consumer.
USE OF DIGITAL MEDIA
Creativity is a process which generates ideas that have value to the individual
and acting upon it.
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality and it
involves two processes: thinking, then producing. If you have ideas, but don’t
act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.
I think that creativity is the development of an original idea into an actual
product.
CREATIVITY DEFINITION
I think that my A2 production was more creative than my AS production despite both
having creative elements.
In my AS production, I challenged some conventions such as the gender roles and the
costume connotations but mostly followed the typical conventions such as setting and
themes where in my A2 production, I challenged and developed a lot more conventions.
The conventions I did follow in my A2 production were mainly the basis for a trailer such
as the timing and the use of minimal dialogue as well as the backing music for my genre. I
challenged a lot of main conventions in my A2 production such as the role of the title
character and the pace of the trailer. The biggest that I challenged would be the camera
work as the majority of the footage is freehand in the style of a “vlog” which is completely
different from the conventional static camera. As well as challenging conventions, I also
developed some of them such as the narrative structure as it is semi-linear rather than being
non-linear or linear as well as the title position as the titles were focused more in the middle
rather than the beginning of the trailer.
The fact that I had more confidence to experiment with the conventions means that my A2
production was more creative and original than my AS production which was quite
conventional.
