FILM INDUSTRY
In the top 100 grossing films 66% of actors
were male and 34% were female
Dramas are the cheapest genre of film to make. It also
has the broadest definition of all genres as most films
contain a bit of drama in them.
Some of the highest end actors salaries can cost between
$20-$30 million and possibly even more for example
George Clooney was the highest paid actor in 2018 with
earnings of $239million.
Directors also have a huge pay-out for films as well, the
highest paid director is Steven Spielberg who has a
lifetime grossing of $10.5 billion.
In 2019 the global box office hit a record of $42.5
billion of revenue. The current highest grossing film is
Avengers: Endgame which grossed around $2.8billion
just overtaking Avatar.
The film with the highest loss however is King Arthur:
Legend of the Sword which had a budget of
$175million but only mad $25million back meaning
they lost $150million.
Comparing this
chart to the most
made films in a
genre, drama
creates the most
films but doesn’t
bring in the most
revenue
In the film industry there are about 10 main
roles for production:
• Producer- the group leader and is
responsible for managing production.
• Director- oversees the shooting and
assembly of a film.
• Screenwriter- provides dialogue and shapes
the sequence of events.
• Production Designer- they translate the
script into visual form.
• Art Director- responsible for the setting of
the film.
• Costume Designer- they decide the
costumes for the actors.
• Cinematographer- the direct the
photography for the film.
• Editor- they organise the clips and add
effects to them.
• Actors- responsible for portraying characters
in a film.
• Music Supervisor- they select the right
music for the film.
The average cost of a major studio movie can cost around
$65 million for production then another $35 million for
marketing, so around $100 million overall. The current film
with the highest budget is Pirates of the Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides which cost a huge $378.5 million to
produce.
