Fertilizers are classified as straight, complex, or mixed based on their nutrient content. Straight fertilizers contain only one primary nutrient like urea (N), SSP (P), or MOP (K). Complex fertilizers contain two or more primary nutrients like DAP (N,P) or ammonium phosphate sulfate (N,P). Mixed fertilizers are physical mixtures of straight fertilizers that contain two or more primary nutrients like 19-19-19 NPK. Fertilizers are also classified as complete or incomplete based on whether they contain N, P, and K. They can also be acid, base, or neutral. Micronutrients
Plant nutrients required in minute quantities but considered essential are called micronutrients or trace elements or minor elements (eg.) Zinc Sulphate.
Basal Application or Basal Dressing
Application of fertilizers to the soil entirely or in part of the total requirement at the time of sowing or planting is called basal application.
Top Dressing
Application of fertilizers to the crop during the growth period in specific stages.

Micronutrients

- 2. Soil fertility and soil productivity “Soil fertility is the ability of the soil to supply essential plant nutrients during growth period of the plants, without toxic concentration of any nutrients”. “the capacity of the soil to supply nutrient in available form to crop”.

- 4. Fertilizer • Fertilizer is any material of natural or synthetic origin added to the soil to supply one or more plant nutrients • Usually fertilizers are inorganic in nature and most of them are products of different industries. (exceptions are urea and CaCN2 – organic fertilizers)
