FARMING SYSTEM
RESEARCH
FARMING SYSTEM
Farming system is a complex
inter-related matrix of soils,
plants, animals, implements,
labour and capital, inter-
dependent farming enterprises.
FARMING SYSTEM RESEARCH
FSR is an academic activity
comprising of theory, concepts,
principles and approaches that
views the whole farm as a
system.
FSR
 FSR approach involves selecting target
areas and farmers, identifying problems
and opportunities, designing and
executing on-farm research and
evaluating and implementing the results.
 FSR focuses on the inter dependencies
among the components under control of
the farm household and how do these
components interact with the physical,
biological and socioeconomic factors not
under the household.
METHODOLOGY
1. Analysis of existing farming system
2. Understanding the modifications made
in existing farming system by innovative
farmers.
3. New options recommended by
researchers.
4. On – farm verification trials.
5. Economic analysis of recommended
options.
6. Follow – up studies.
ON FARM TRIALS
On farm research is a vital
function of the FSR approach. It
is a problem oriented research,
which recognizes that changes to
farming systems must be adapted
to circumstances of the intended
users of the change.
ON FARM TRIALS - STEPS
i. Diagnosis
ii. Planning
iii.Conducting on – farm trial
iv.Assessment
v. Extrapolation
DEVELOPMENT OF FARMING
SYSTEM MODEL
The main objective lying before FSR is the
construction of a viable model which can be
explained in a better way by the flow-charts
explaining the behaviour of different enterprises in
the IFS.
A flow chart states
i. The statement of activities.
ii. The resource needed.
iii. The operational means required to attain the
desired/ targeted goal/ results.
CONCLUSION
FSR is an modern approach
to agricultural research in
order to solve the problems
of farmers operating under
difficult, varied and risk
prone agriculture.
