3. 1. INTRODUCTION : DEFINITION
● False ceilings are often secondary ceilings that are hung below
the main ceiling with the help of suspension cords or struts.
● These ceilings are crafted from a wide range of materials such
as POP (plaster of Paris), gypsum board, asbestos sheets,
particle board, aluminium panel, wood etc.
● They are also known as dropped ceiling or suspended ceiling

● Dropped ceilings and ceiling tiles were being used in
Japan for aesthetic reasons as early as the Muromachi
Period (1337 to 1573). Blackfriars Theater in London,
England, built in 1596, had dropped ceilings to aid
acoustics

interlocking tiles
and the only way to provide access for repair or
inspection of the area above the tiles was by starting
at the edge of the ceiling, or at a designated "key

1. Exposed Grid
● these ceilings are easily identified by the fact that the
grid work supporting the tiles is exposed
● The exposed grid system is suspended from the soffits
using pre-tensioned suspension wire, rigid angle, rigid

2. Concealed Grid
● With this type of ceiling, the grid work supporting the tiles or membrane is concealed and only
the ceiling tiles are visible
● The tiles or membranes can be metal, mineral wool, gypsum, calcium silicate, stone wool and
glass wool
● Mineral wool and gypsum-This type of ceiling employs a method of interlocking panels into
each other and the grid with the use of small strips of metal called 'splines'. Normally, these
type of ceilings will have a ‘key panel’ (usually in the corner) which can be removed, allowing
for the other panels to be slid out of the grid (a series of metal channels called 'Z bars') one by
one, until eventually removing the desired panel.
● Metal- The metal tiles can be either clipped into, hooked over or held in place with torsion
