This document summarizes a presentation about maximizing access to information for faculty, students, and staff through the use of personal learning networks (PLNs) and technology tools. The presentation objectives are to identify existing professional development tools, explain how PLNs align with adult learning theory, develop a plan to build a PLN, and summarize the rationale for using technology for professional development. It discusses how PLNs are a perfect match for adult learning principles as they allow for self-directed, collaborative, and connected learning. Attendees are encouraged to follow the presenter on social media to access additional resources for developing their own PLNs.

FORMAL LEARNING
Formal learning is normally delivered by trained teachers in a systematic and intentional way within a school structure, academy/college/university, is one of three forms of learning as defined by the OECD, the others being informal learning, which typically takes place as part of another activity.
INFORMAL LEARNING
Informal learning is a pervasive ongoing phenomenon of learning via participation or learning via knowledge creation, in contrast with the traditional view of teacher-centered learning via knowledge acquisition. The term is often conflated though with non-formal learning and self directed learning.
FORMAL VS. INFORMAL LEARNING
Formal Learning: Courses/MOOCs
There is a set structure, content, assignments, communication is focused (forum posts, discussions etc)
Informal Learning: PLNs
There is no set structure other than the connections that you choose to make. The content and connections are fluid and so is the material.
Both forms have value!

PERSONAL LEARNING NETWORK
A personal learning network is an informal learning network that consists of the people a learner interacts with and derives knowledge from in a personal learning environment.
You want to be as close as
You can to the centre of this!
Be an influencer!
THEORY OF CROWD CAPITAL (Prpic & Shykla, 2012)
Knowledge generated through the use of social networks
The structure, content and process through which knowledge is acquired through the interactions in the network are FAR GREATER than in any one individual.
Dispersion of expertise and experience enriches both the BREADTH and DEPTH of learning!!
CONNECTIVISM (Siemens & Downes, 2008)
Is a form of EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING which is based on the learner’s actions and experiences.
Learning rests in diverse experiences and knowledge
Learning is the process of connecting nodes of information from people and things
Learning is perceiving connections between ideas, concepts and core skills
Decision-making and discovery are core learning processes
CONNECTIONS = LEARNING!
PROCESS IS EVERYTHING
Due diligence is an investigation of a person or a business prior to signing a contract or an act with a certain standard of care. It can be a legal obligation, but the term will more commo.

This workshop will inform participants about the mechanics as well as the advantages and disadvantages of professional learning networks (PLN), both as a scholar and in the classroom. A professional learning network (also known as a personalized learning network) includes technology-based tools and processes used by a social worker to stay up-to-date and share information about current news, practice knowledge and the latest research findings. Participants will learn how to establish and grow their own PLN, integrate PLNs into a classroom or curriculum, and appreciate how the theory of Connectivism (Siemens, 2005) informs the practice of PLNs.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Have participants watch the video and write down one question while-watching and then post-viewing.
Choose a few participants to share their questions, and possible answers.
Ask participants how this could be relevant to their teaching and/or professional development.
I have been working with adult educators, both professional and volunteer in community based orgs, school systems, community colleges and now for the a state agency. I have worked with professional developers on working most effectively with instructors and faculty. The recurring themes have been the same year in and year out
we need pd and continuous learning
often feel isolated in the field
we want time to get together and share ideas
conferences are expensive and employers won’t/can’t support us
we don’t have pay time or time to get together in or around teaching time
we want to build a professional community of practice
In our professional development we need to try to follow the same principles of adult learning theory as we do for our learners and how characteristics of adult learners align with traditional professional development
Knowles' assumptions
The need to know — adult learners need to know why they need to learn something before undertaking to learn it.
Learner self-concept —adults need to be responsible for their own decisions and to be treated as capable of self-direction
Role of learners' experience —adult learners have a variety of experiences of life which represent the richest resource for learning. These experiences are however imbued with bias and presupposition.
Readiness to learn —adults are ready to learn those things they need to know in order to cope effectively with life situations.
Orientation to learning —adults are motivated to learn to the extent that they perceive that it will help them perform tasks they confront in their life situations.
Malcolm Knowles (1980) popularized the concept of andragogy (“the art and science of helping adults learn”), contrasting it with pedagogy (“the art and science of teaching children”). He posited a set of assumptions about adult learners—namely, that the adult learner • Moves from dependency to increasing self directedness as he/she matures and can direct his/her own learning; • Draws on his/her accumulated reservoir of life experiences to aid learning; • Is ready to learn when he/she assumes new social or life roles; • Is problem-centered and wants to apply new learning immediately; and • Is motivated to learn by internal, rather than external, factors.
We need pd that meets our instructors needs, in an efficient and effective self directed way
Ask participants to watch the video and pay attention to keywords and phrases.
Ask participants to jot down 5 to 7 keywords or phrases they hear in the video

It might be easiest to first think about resources in types: Collaborative and Gathering!
Once you set this in play, taking advantage of all the resources mentioned in the video will be helpful.
Let’s get started.
Walk around and talk to at least 3 people about what they use the different applications for… if you like and they use things for purposes that might be helpful to you I would suggest connecting. To start creating your personal learning network. Note:
How many followers/follows folks have for each app and how that expands you learning network !
Caveat: I keep certain applications personal and certain applications professional.
