Blended Learning
What is Blended?
“Blended learning is a strategy to combine technology-
based instruction with traditional, teacher-to-student
lessons. It exists everywhere in school districts. This
special report, “Blended Learning: Breaking Down
Barriers,” examines how K-12 systems are overcoming
the challenges related to this approach.” (Education
Week)

How to build a successful Blended Learning Model
1) Reinforce the pedagogy and then show how blended learning can get
you there.
blended learning doesn’t look like children sitting in front of a computer all day.
2) Select technology that truly supports the blended environment.
3) Choose the right model for your existing curriculum.
4) Get your ducks in a row.
Start the process by looking at what type of digital programs and resources will
support your curriculum, instruction, and vision for blended learning. What devices
or what type of technology are you going to use? What does the related
professional development look like?

Self-guided Professional Development
Self-Guided Professional Development is when teachers are
given the opportunity to seek specifically what they would like to
learn more about, usually through an online source.
Examples of self-directed learning include watching “TED” talks,
taking part in webinars or online conferences, and posting
questions on social media to get answers to questions that come
up.
7. z Self-guided Professional Development
Teachers who have taken at least one online PD course are
more likely than colleagues who have not done so to pursue
additional “self-directed” professional learning.
Teachers who say they have had PD experiences that are
heavily or partly based online report that they are more likely to
weave technology into their teaching,
Teachers with tech-based PD experiences are also more inclined
to use an online curriculum, and post information in online
portals for their classes.

Self-Guided Professional Development
My district has done this before, I LOVED IT! Especially as an
art teacher, not all PD is relevant to me. When we are given the
opportunity to seek what we want to learn it is directly beneficial.
We were also given the opportunity to do our PD in the comfort
of our own home, classroom, or with a group of colleagues. It
was our choice.
This self-guided PD will give teachers the opportunity to take
ownership of their own time, of what they would like to learn.
Technology, I think would more and more be a focus of this self-
guided PD.
