2. Opening Article Draft with Feedback – 13/10
I wrote up a first draft of my
opening article for the start of
the fanzine about mental
health in general, and I
received feedback from my
tutor with: words in red
where he has changed it to
make more sense or to
generally improve on. Words
crossed out and highlighted in
yellow are things to consider
to improve on. The blue text
are comments on different
sentences on what is good
and what can be improved on.
3. Opening Article – Final Copy – 13/10 + 14/10
After reviewing my feedback I
made the necessary changes that
were recommended by my tutor,
and after adding and deleting
sentences this is now my final copy
for my opening article as it is still in
the fanzine genre with it being
informal, but still factual by having
statistics and facts to back up my
points.
4. Interview with Joanne Ward – 1st Draft Layout – 14/10
This is my initial layout design for my
first interview in my fanzine with
Joanne Ward.
I have used two images of Joanne
with her son who has cerebral palsy,
and this interview will be over a
double page with the interview
itself being in the gap on the second
page.
Depending on the length of the
interview I may add other details
like love hearts, additional writing in
bubbles etc.
I like this colour scheme although it
may change if I become inspired by
something else.
5. Interview Questions – 14/10 + 15/10
I have written my interview questions for two of my three interviews
with Joanne and Dale Ward. I am planning on conducting both these
interviews on the 18th and 19th so I will have them ready to put into
the layouts I have created.
6. Interview with Dale Ward – 1st Draft Layout – 15/10
This is my first draft for the
layout of my second interview
with Dale Ward.
I will have one main image that
will go in the bottom right, and
the rest of the space will be
filled with an interview.
Depending on the size of the
interview I may do an
introduction to the interview at
the top of the pink section or on
the purple section, but it will
depend on how successful the
interview will go and the size of
it.
7. Interview with Jake Mawer – 1st Draft Layout – 20/10
This is my first draft of the layout
for my third interview that is
with Jake Mawer.
The three columns on the
bottom is what the interview is
going to go into, and the column
on the right hand side is going to
be a little introduction, or I will
just include that space for the
interview and drag it down to
the bottom of the page.
The purple square is where the
main image is going to go, and
the title will go next to it to the
left.
8. Front Cover – 20/10
I started my front
cover by getting a
globe, and cutting the
top off and making
that a separate layer.
Once I made that a
separate layer, I
inserted a brain and
made it so only the
top half of the brain is
sticking out. I have
done this because the
title of the fanzine
being ‘Our Minds’, the
our part being the
world, and mind part
being the brain.
After I had created
the illustration for
the front cover, I
added the masthead
with a white text
underneath it so it
has a bolder effect
to it, and then I
added some text at
the bottom so the
page doesn’t look
empty.
9. Back Cover – 20/10
For my back cover design, I angled the top
of the globe so the lid is closing the brain
back down, which I think is a simple but
effective change.
I also added a little subtle message below
it, which again is very simple but it makes
the page become less scarce.
10. Opening Article Page – 21/10
My initial idea was to have the article across a double page, however it didn’t look right and just looked dull, so
I decided to spread the article across two double pages as it the article itself was lengthy so by doing this is
allowed me to have the font at a readable font size, and it gave me two separate pages to do some illustrations
on them.
11. Opening Article Page – 21/10
My first design was the world mental heath day poster and I changed the colours of the head and brain itself as
the brain was a similar colour to the second poster on the other pages; I added a black outline to the head so it
looks better matching with the font colour. My second design was a very simple design with a powerful message
on it, and I think the main colour compliments the colour of the background as it is still in the pastel colour
pallet but stands out.
12. Illustration Design – 22/10
For one of my
illustration pages I
have designed this
page, and the
statement ‘Burn
The Stigma’
means to get rid
of this bubble
around people
speaking about
their mental
health and
support people to
help them speak
about it.
To make the
illustration stand
out more and
look more
aesthetically
pleasing, I added
a black outline to
the full
illustration and it
looks better, but I
may add
something else to
it.
13. Ending Pages – First Draft – 22/10
This is my first draft for the
back 2 pages before the back
cover.
I have added some helplines
that were featured at the
start of the fanzine, however
I may add different ones for
a bit of variety and add some
more writing before it.
On the 2nd page I will feature
another illustration.
14. Dale Ward Interview Reply - 29/10
After contacting Dale Ward for an interview I received a
good reply and a very good interview.
I went through the interview and cut out some unnecessary
details that weren’t relevant for what I needed and kept the
best answers.
15. Jo Ward Interview Reply - 30/10
After contacting Joanne Ward for an interview she replied with
an in depth and long answer to all my questions.
I may have to spread the answers across multiple pages or pick
out the best answers and create another double page spread
for the second part of the interview.
16. Jake Mawer Interview Reply - 03/11
Jake Mawer was unable to provide an interview due to being too occupied with his personal
and work life.
The interviews with Joanne and Dale Ward are detailed enough, so not being able to conduct
this interview was not a huge loss, however it would have been ideal to conduct this
interview.
17. Dale Ward Interview Page – 03/11
Due to the response from Dale Ward and the answers being long and detailed, I have had to create
another double page to fit the full interview on.
By screenshotting these two pages, I have realised that you can hardly read the writing so I am going
to change the size of the writing so it is readable.
18. Dale Ward Interview Page – 03/11
After changing the font, colour and size of the writing it has made it more readable and looks better against the purple
background. By having the introduction and questions in bold it makes them more clear and I think it looks better .
I have spread the full interview across the 4 pages and there is a gap in the corners of both pages, which I will fill with
an image and an illustration.
19. Dale Ward Interview Page – 03/11
I have cut out Dale Ward from the original photo as the lighting was bad and the background of the image itself
looked too cluttered and I wasn’t happy with it. Therefore, I cut him out and added an outline to the image and
added some lines around it, which were inspired Keith Haring as it uses that style in his work.
I also added an illustration on the second page, which goes well with the colour scheme of the pages, but doesn’t
take the attention away from the interview itself.
20. Joanne Ward Interview – 5/11
Due to the level of detail in Joanne’s interview I have had to spread it across two pages, so because of that I have
moved one of the images to the other page.
I have also changed the colour of the background as it looked a bit darker in the first draft and I wanted a lighter
yellow. I changed the colour and font of the text as well because some of the punctuation used in the interview wasn’t
available with my original font, and I think the colour purple goes better instead of the pink/red colour from before.
21. Joanne Ward Interview – 10/11
This is my finished interview with Joanne Ward. Unfortunately I couldn’t fit the full interview across two double page
spreads, so I picked the best answers that were given and used them. I added a small introduction below the main title of
the page and then started the interview below that; I increased the size of the two images as well to make them more
prominent.
22. Back Page – 11/11
The first image is my first draft of
one of the two back pages of my
fanzine.
The second image is my second
draft of one of the two back pages
of my fanzine.
The main differences are : I have
changed the helplines as in the
first draft they were the same as
the ones in the opening article, so
I changed it to different ones for
variety, and I have also added a
thick white stroke behind the
‘Thank You!’ instead of having a
second layer of white behind it in
the first draft.
23. Back Page – 11/11
The first image was my
inspiration for designing and
creating this illustration.
I found an image of a brain
on Google as an outlien and
used the pen tool to create a
path around it, and then
used the brush tool to create
the black lines on the inside
of the brain.
I added a black outline to the
text and the brain itself to
match the other page as that
has black and white text on it
as well, but to make it stand
out more to the reader.
