Settlement sites were often chosen based on physical factors that provided shelter, resources, and strategic advantages. Sites were commonly located in valleys or coastal areas for shelter from winds. Aspect, or direction faced, was also important for receiving sunlight. Sites near rivers, at crossings or where routes met, were advantageous. Defensive sites were built within river bends or on hills and ridges. Modern settlement sites are less dependent on proximity to resources and more influenced by proximity to transportation networks and places of employment.
