2. What does this mean ?
 Factors are things that contribute to
(make) differences in development
 Differences have measurements on them
(characteristics) (statistics) eg Infant
Mortality rate is 34/1000 in XX and
12/1000 in YY
 In AS91242 these are split into Natural
and Cultural in the current version of the
Standard

3. Natural Factors
 Natural Factors are the starting point that leads to a
cultural difference and they are all about the natural
environment they have nothing to do with People
 Rainfall, Heat, Soil, Landforms, Coasts, Water, drought,
Monsoon rains, Floods, Soil Erosion etc
 Eg
 place XX has access to the sea but place YY does not
 Place XX is affected by the Monsoon but place YY is not
 Place XX has nutritious, fertile soils but Place YY has
desertified barren soils.
 Place XX has clean water supplies (lakes, rivers) Place
YY has stagnant waters

4. Natural factors are not
Deforestation of rural areas
Piped Water in the city
Jobs in the city so not affected by
drought
Monsoon rains in Place A AND Monsoon
rains in Place B (no difference)
Drainage pipes to take away heavy
rains

5. Cultural Factors
 Cultural Factors are the starting point that leads
to a cultural difference and they are all about the
built / man made environment
 Piped Water, Jobs, Fertilisers, Religion,
Deforestation, planting forests, digging new
drainage channels.
 Eg
 In City DD they have drains to take away the
Monsoon rains
 In Rural Area CC they have removed all the trees
(Deforestation) so there is increased runoff
 In Country AA they believe that a womans role is
one of child raring so women do not go to work,
this reduces the GDP of the country.
