Boy by Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl uses humour in children books he writes to manipulate the reader s perception of events
that occur in the books. The book, Boy is an autobiography written by Roald Dahl. It was his first
book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he
wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them
humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96,
2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a
humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique.
Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the
characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop.
In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl,
1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He
describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a
green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a
green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl,
1984:33). Here we see some alliteration of the words grey and greasy. He goes on describing how she

Cough Airway Muscles
Cough is a defensive airway reflex consisting of a sequence of respiratory mechanical events: large
inspiratory effort, transient closure of the larynx, and powerful expulsive effort. These respiratory
mechanical events are caused by intense contractions of inspiratory muscles, such as the diaphragm,
expiratory laryngeal muscles, chest wall, and abdominal muscles. Motoneurons innervating these
muscles are located in the brainstem and spinal cord and are controlled by a network of neurons
known as the cough pattern generator. The cough pattern generator receives information regarding the
mechanical and chemical status of the airways from sensory afferents in the lungs and larynx with
axons in the vagus and superior laryngeal nerves. When the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Acute cough is disturbing but generally self limiting. There are a variety of over the counter (OTC)
cough suppressant drugs that are available for suppression of cough, most of which have not been
shown to be effective (). Even prescription drugs, such as codeine, are now thought to be no more
effective than placebo for cough suppression (). OTC preparations containing menthol and similar
derivatives with sugary vehicles can be effective in controlling irritating sensations that promote
coughing (urge to cough) ().
Chronic coughing frequently requires the dedicated intervention of an experienced physician. The
presence of cough itself is not a useful diagnostic indicator, as many different disorders are manifest as
coughing making diagnosis challenging. The emergence of specific diagnostic protocols, first
promoted by Richard Irwin (), have allowed physicians to more effectively diagnose and treat the most
common causes of chronic cough

The European Union (EU) vs the North American Free Trade Agreement
Introduction
The European Union (EU) is the organization which integrates the countries listed below, both
politically and economically. It is a customs union, which is an agreement amongst a group of
countries to eliminate trade barriers between them on the movement of goods, services, labor and
capital, and also to establish a common external tariff on goods and services coming into the union.
The EU evolved from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which was formed in 1951 as
a response to the First and Second World Wars to try to ensure future peace in Europe. This became
the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1965, which in turn became the European ... Show

Indeed, the ideological foundations that gave birth to the EU were based on ensuring development and
maintaining international stability, i.e., the containment of communist expansion in post World War II
Europe (Hunt 1989). The Maastricht Treaty which gave birth to the EU in 1992 included
considerations for joint policies in regard to military defense and citizenship.
Trading blocs could strongly affect a company s investment decision. This particular trading bloc
development prompted Ford to realise it could consider Europe to be one common market rather than
a collection of individual markets. In 1967, Ford changed its management structure to include its
European operations under one umbrella organisation known as Ford Europe Incorporated. Its two
large U.K. and German manufacturing centres remained an important dimension of the new strategy,
but they were no longer considered separate, independently operating companies. Despite nationalistic
tendencies on the part of the host country management, Ford decided that, from the companies
perspective, it was best to eliminate national boundaries, and a German director said, The pooling of
the two companies cut the engineering bill in half for each company, provided economies of scale,
with double the volume in

Frederick Douglass Ridicule Auld Analysis
While reading Frederick Douglass Letter to my Former Master and Letter to Henry C. Wright , it
became clear that both beautifully written pieces were criticisms of the receiver. While writing to
Thomas Auld, the former master, Douglass does not go deliberately out of his way to insult Auld,
instead, Douglass describes their relationship as long and intimate, by no means friendly [that]
unhappily subsisted between [Auld] and [Douglass], leads [Douglass] to hope that [Auld] will easily
account for the great liberty which [Douglass] now take in addressing [Auld] in this open and public
manner. Douglass does not want to ridicule Auld which adds to his negative demeanor towards slaves.
Instead, Douglass is going to justify why it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wright also criticizes the receiver. During the letter, Douglass indicated that Wright has not done
enough to be an advocate of anti slavery because Wright [has not] acted quite consistently with [his
charaver for promptness, in delaying [his] advice till he transaction was completed. Douglass does not
appreciate the two sided ace of Henry C. Wright because as an advocate of anti slavery, Wright should
stand firmly against the sanction of robbing slaves for their independence. However, in this letter,
Douglass is audacious of Wright. Douglass does not fear Wright because he knows that slaves who
buy their freedom are not doing the correct thing. He knows that he is alright with being in Europe
although everything he has ever worked for is in America. Frederick Douglass will not sanction [the
government s] right to rob [him] because he is naturally born with the right to be free. Henry C.
Wright was an advocate for feminism, anti slavery, and giving people their natural rights, but when it
came to speaking about his views, Wright knew his reputation would plummet. Douglass continues to
be audacious when [he] does not think it would be very honorable pn [his] part, to remain silent during
the whole transaction. It is evident that Douglass not only wants slaves to be free, but he does not want
the slaves to pay for their independence because that would lead to the leaders of the government to

Contributions Of Qing Shi Huangdi s Adoption Of Legalism
Qing Shi Huangdi s adoption of Legalism was firm (those who opposed the ideology were often
executed or banished) and effective, as it led to various fundamental administrative and political
developments. For instance, unlike previous dynasties such as the Zhou, the Qin grew to be a highly
centralized state with a bureaucracy divided into three primary ministries: a civil authority, a military
authority, and a censorate ( World History ) The officials who assumed such roles were examined by
an inspection system to reduce the possibility of corruption, which would later serve as the foundation
administrative procedure for later dynasties. Furthermore, Legalism resulted in these officials earning
their powers rather than inheriting them. Research has speculated that a merit system was probably
employed in determining the positions such as an examination. Qin s favor of centralization (perhaps
brought by his adoption of Legalism) additionally led to advancements outside of administration and
political structure. For instance, he established systems that unified standard measurements,
emphasized on monetary values (collection of taxes and distribution of estates included), as well as
standardized the Chinese written language. He also organized the construction of roads extending to
and from his empire (one of his main achievements was [bringing] together the scattered defensive
battlements into what we now know as the Great Wall ( World History ). Unfortunately,

Ciabatta Bread History
In the history of art there are periods when bread seems so beautiful that it nearly gets into museums.
(Janet Flanner, Paris Was Yesterday, 1925 1939). Bread comes in a myriad of forms, flavors, shapes,
and sizes. To millions of people every day it is a source of nutrients, a way of filling their stomachs
with something their body needs. To others, it is a form of art, a chef or baker s life and soul poured
into their creation. Whichever way you see it, bread is a part of our lives, as well as our history.
Ciabatta bread has its roots in Italy, with numerous regions taking claim to be the originators. The
name Ciabatta, is Italian for slipper , due to the fact that it resembles shoe it is named after. Ciabatta

Essay on Boer War
The Boer War was a conflict that lasted from 1899 to 1902 in southern Africa between Great Britain
and their allies, Transvaal (South African Republic) and Orange Free State, in what is now South
Africa.
Throughout the 19th century, after Great Britain conquered the Cape of Good Hope in 1814 and
expanded its territory in Southern Africa, there was tension between the British settlers and the Dutch
descended population which were called Afrikaners or Boers. This resulted in the Afrikaner migration
called the Great Trek, which was from 1835 to 1843, and the establishment of the Afrikaner republics.
These republics were called Natal, Orange Free State, and the South African Republic. Natal became a
British colony in 1843, but the Transvaal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The South African Republic and the Orange Free Stated made an alliance. They then declared war on
the British on October 12, 1899 because they were uncooperative with Kurger s demands. The
Afrikaner forces were successful in invading Natal and Cape Colony. In December the British
commander in chief Sir Redvers H. Buller sent fresh troops to relieve the British forces in three war
zones. These zones were Colenso, Natal, the hills of Magersfontein on the Orange Free State and Cape
Colony borders, and the mountain range of Stormberge in the Cape Colony. Within a week, which is
referred to as the Black Week by the British, each of the new units had been defeated by Afrikaner
forces.
On January 10, 1900, the British general Frederick S. Roberts was sent to replace Buller as
commander in chief. However, Buller remained to fight throughout the war. Early in February,
Roberts ordered the British commander John D. P. French north to relieve the city of Kimberley.
Roberts marched northeastward from Cape Colony into the Orange Free State. Attacked by the
Afrikaner general Piet Cronje on February 27, Roberts fought back successfully and forced the
surrender of Cronje and his troops. On March 13, Roberts entered Bloemfontein, which was the
capital of the Orange Free State. Roberts captured Johannesburg on May 31 and Pretoria on June 5.
After they won, President Kruger went to Europe and Roberts returned to England in January 1901

A Brief Summary Of Chapter One Of All Quiet On The Western...
Chapter one of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (1928) gives
insight to the horrific realities soldiers have to face in World War I. Paul Baumer, the narrator and one
of the soldiers enlisted to fight for his country, tells the reader that they have just returned back to
camp after two weeks of fighting on the front lines. He also notes that more than half of their
Company of one hundred fifty men were lost in a gas attack the day before, and this lead to a surplus
of leftover food and supplies for the remaining soldiers. The main soldiers in the story visit their
friend, Kemmerich, in the hospital, whose leg has been amputated and who is on the verge of death.
Remarque uses imagery of Kemmerich in the hospital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul reminisces about the times before he was a soldier, when he still had dreams and aspirations to
become a writer, but now, those dreams have become irrelevant and seemingly unreachable. He also
brings up the memories of him as a fresh soldier, required to do embarrassing as well as arduous tasks
which made the recruits tough and durable, prepping them for the harsh realities of war. Paul also
finally experiences the death of Kemmerich, but his mostly emotionless response to his death reveals
that soldiers do not and are unable to show their emotion. This type of thing occurs a lot, and the
soldiers do not really display their emotion and have lost their capability to properly mourn for their
lost brothers. The author juxtaposes the soldiers previous lives before they became who they are now
with the experiences they currently face to demonstrate how war destroys their sense of personality
and emotions. When Paul talks about the soldiers experiences first being recruited into the military, he
mentions how [they] recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence
but the system, not freedom but drill (Remarque 22). Paul illustrates the fact that when soldiers are
recruited, the soldiers had to completely disregard themselves. The war has become their entire life,
and all that really mattered from that point of recruitment on was not their character or personality, but
their skill and how well they do on the battlefield. The author wants us to realize that war is a massive
detriment to the soldiers enlisted to fight for their country, because it rips away their dreams and
personalities, and forces them into an entire life

Alfred Von Shlieffen
Before World War I, German Chief of staff Alfred von Schlieffen was requested by Kaiser Wilhelm II
to create Germany s army a plan for a war against France and Russia. Germany could not compete
with other European powers. Surrounding states afraid of Germany s quick growth and aggressive
attitude were eager to contain it. The Kaiser sought out Schlieffen and directed him to devise a plan
that would allow Germany to gain power and assert itself as a dominant state. Because the Franco
Russian alliance was in place at that time in 1898, Germany was unable to attack just one of the
countries and not the other. Instead, it would be forced to fight a two front war. Wilhelm II knew that
if they were attacked, Britain would come to France s defense.

Christians On The Fringe Of Society
People that are on the fringe of society means that they are not apart of the popular group within
society and they are not always accepted for who they are. People such as the homeless, poor, women
and the LGBTQ+ community are all on the fringe of society. They are marginalised and they always
have to prove themselves to other people.
After Christians have received the Eucharist they become apart of God s family and must obey and
follow his teachings. They are meant to assist those people on the fringe of society by encouraging
other people to accept who they are. Christians can reach out to these people by donating to the poor,
being apart of community groups and accepting everyone into their life. In the Luke 22:7 38 The Last

A Collective Identity Of Europe
Post war European nations were faced with the task of restructuring their states after the devastating
war. A collective agreement was made for a political body to help stabilize much of Europe. The
Community provided external political structure that would provide the means necessary to create a
stable economy and develop technologies, but in order to do so there would need to be a collective
identity of Europe. As nation states were trying to redefine their history and assert their independence
it became a delicate balance between maintaining their own identity and joining in the Community
that would impose new regulation but also provide the resources necessary to rebuild economically.
This struggle to maintain a national identity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The benefit was that nation states could now have their own domestic economy and still benefit from
the advancing international markets that were more accessible.
However, economics cannot be viewed as an independent unit. How the market works is inadvertently
based on a cultural set of ideals and markets can function differently from state to state. In order to
formalize an institution to control the economy new regulations must be set in place. In the sense of
the European Community all nations states had to join together to create a set of rules that everyone
agreed upon. By abiding by new rules nations in return could expect to benefit from a larger political
body. This all sounded very promising, a new and stronger institution would regulate the economy,
and provide security for the vulnerable post war nations. In doing so, Europe would create a collective
identity, a sense of nationality. Although after the war the idea of a stronger unified economy sounded
promising it could also be viewed as a hindrance in the long term. The European Community s goal
was to create a unification of the nation states but from the viewpoint of a individual state this could
be a loss of independence and identity. This communal identity made western European states
resemble each other much more than they resembled those of other places or other times. The focus

Stafford takes the time to let the reader think and analyze the questions asked in the first seven lines.
In lines 9 and 10 he says that You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait (Stafford). But if
you remember in the first line the river is ice so it s not only silent but calm, it s not moving at all. The
speaker in the poem chooses not to discuss whether/ what I have done is my life until the river is ice
(Anderson).I think that he uses the time of winter to wait for the river to freeze so share his thoughts.
For if the river is frozen it cannot pass on and judge his life. He follows in lines 11 13 that the river is
silent but there are still currents and movement hidden under the ice. Stafford paraphrases these lines
That river, and that world and our lives all share the depth and stillness of much more significance

what you do in life or who has something to say about it the actions in which we choose to make have

final judgment to be passed. Starting with the frozen river in the first line Stafford gives us the

Fast Food Advertising Causing Obesity
Fast Food Advertising Causing Obesity
I think America s food culture is embedded in fast food culture. And the real question that we have is:
How are we going to teach slow food values in a fast food world? Of course, it s very, very difficult to
do, especially when children have grown up eating fast food and the values that go with that (Waters).
The fast food industry is controlled by many powerful companies who feel the need to keep costs low.
This is because they believe that the lower the costs, the more consumers they ll gain, which keeps
profits high. Between 1960 and 1973, McDonald s restaurants expanded from 250 to 3,000. The US is

Fast food is a major health issue because it causes obesity. In the article, Obesity and Fast Food , Dr.
Anaya Mandel claims, It is well known that eating out may lead to excess calorie intake and increases
the risk of obesity because of large portion sizes and increased energy density of foods (1). This author
is stating that restaurants such as McDonald s can cause obesity. Thus, eating at any fast food
restaurant can increase chances of obesity. Meals at these restaurants are cheap, therefore people in a
rush or people who regularly consume fast foods will end up buying the cheaper and greasier meals.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Mass Tourism
According to Burkart and Medlik (1974), mass tourism can be defined as a large numbers of people
visiting a destination at a time. Jafari s (1989, 2001) platform model explains the transition of the
tourism industry with 4 stages. These 4 stages are: Advocacy, Cautionary, Adaptancy and Knowledge
Based platform. The first stage would be Advocacy platform, this was when travelling was
encouraged as it does not only benefits the tourism sector but also other sectors such as the economic
sector which is the increase of revenues and employment and the sociocultural sector which creates
the opportunity for other to learn about the different cultures around the world. The following platform
would be Cautionary platform; this is when people start to be aware that there are not only positive
impacts but also negative impacts for the tourism destinations unless there is careful planning and
regulation imposed. For example, it creates jobs that do not require much skill set and it is mostly only
seasonal. Adaptancy platform would be when solutions start to arise in order to reduce the negative
impacts of tourism and also this is when there is an emergence of alternative tourism. ... Show more

Sustainable development is the economic development that is conducted with depleting natural

Book Review of The Things they Carried Essay examples
Tim O Brien s, The Things they Carried is a riveting tale of struggle and sacrifice, self indulgence and
self pity, and the intrapersonal battles that reeked havoc on even the most battle tested soldiers. O
Brien is able to express these ideas through eloquent writing and descriptive language that makes the
reader feel as if he were there. The struggle to avoid cowardice is a prevailing idea in all of O Brien s
stories. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;In On the Rainy River , O Brien writes of intrapersonal struggle

Issues of war ripped through families, cities, and eventually, the entire country. By making the
decision to go to the war, some would place the distinction of bravery on Cross. He, however, felt like
a coward. For he had given in to the society around him and their pressures. Instead of following his
heart and staying true to his morals, Cross took the easy way out. By fighting in the war, he avoided
the criticism and ridicule which marred draft dodgers and the lifetime of embarrassment that was sure
to follow. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The narrator is torn between two worlds. In his heart and
mind, he knows that the war is wrong and unjust. In his family, town, and nation, however, he was
expected to fight. He must cross a number of hurdles on his way to a life altering decision. It seems
the man has gotten beyond the idea of self embarrassment. The problem for Cross, it seems, is the fact
that his decision affects everyone around him. Like any young man in those times, he was scared. Not
scared of death, but scared of life after the war. He knows that is he does not go to the war, his mother,
his father, and all his friends will share the burden of his embarrassment. That is why he must go to
the war. In a noble sort of way, Cross saves his family the embarrassment of draft dodging. In his
mind, however, he is a coward, a man who simply put, could not stand up to himself in a time of
turmoil. This lack of confidence and self assurance is something

processional and an ominous sounding melodic quality. The orchestration is beautifully conceived and
the percussion writing is ideally suited for younger musicians. The piece begins in the percussion very
quietly. All three players should be in equal balance. It is crucial that the timpani be tuned precisely as
indicated. The main idea of the piece, first appearing at measure 12, dominates this section. Careful
attention to balance and intonation should be given to the low brass stating the idea. The call motif is
developed canonically at the tritone, first as a two part canon in tutti, then as a four part canon by
soloists. The soloists should be of equal balance. The legato theme is developed through several keys,
and the entire section builds gradually from piano to fortissimo. The main idea is recalled at measures

Charles-Louis De Secondat
In the 18th century, Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brede et de Montesquieu coined the term

idea that the political authority of the state should be divided into legislative, executive and judicial
powers. Charles Louis believed that each of these powers should be separate of one another and act
independently. The purpose of three separate branches is to limit the concentration of power, thus
providing checks and balances. Within the American Federal Government, each branch is
characterized by its powers. The legislative branch, headed by Congress, passes laws and allocates the

History Of Development Of The Two Year College
The history of the development of the two year college as presented by Cohen and Brawer (1987,
2003), Dougherty (1994), Townsend and Twombly (2001), and Hutcheson (1999) indicates that most
two year institutions started out as junior colleges, providing the first two years of a bachelor s degree
for those living in rural areas without nearby universities and a chance to explore options for those
who were undecided about their careers. From the first community college established in 1901 in
Joliet, Illinois (Dougherty 1994), the number of community colleges across the United States
multiplied until the 1980s. After World War II the GI Bill of Rights promised returning veterans access
to higher education. In the 1960s the Johnson Administration used the community college as a key
weapon in its War On Poverty, supporting growth to the extent that by late in the decade, a new
community college opened every week (Nystrand and Duffy 10). With the Center for Educational
Statistics showing enrollments of over 2.1 million students in 654 community colleges as of 1970,
more students were beginning their college careers at two year community colleges than at their four
year counterparts, and by 1980 more than 4.5 million students were enrolled in community colleges
(Brint and Karabel 198). Local school and other government officials were motivated to support the

and Joe falls through the ice and freezes to death. Buck had to beat Spitz physically and Sol leks

Charles and Hal are pretty much the same except Charles is more passive than Hal. Mercedes is the
only female character in the story and in my opinion is very pampered. Buck was stolen from his
home in California and forced into dog slavery. This mean that Buck must now pull a heavy sled for
thousands of miles across the country to get to the destination of the leader of the dog pack, Dawson.
Buck was very shy at the beginning because he had never done anything in that state of work before.
Buck was beginning to have dreams about the primitive. Buck became involved in a rivalry between

combination of hardware, storage, and software solutions. SGI s ability to leverage its global
competence had increased, and started to sell products and take orders from European companies.
Hold all these in hand, that SGI got some competitive advantage in the market. For the future, SGI

should maintain its competitive advantage by continue its traditional way to focus on meeting
customer needs, try to provide unique solutions for the toughest technology and business problems,
and try to be the first to market with new component technology. Secondly, SGI should try to create
more products and services by using its unique and valuable skills like server design and cooling

cooperation with its competitors. There are no everlasting friends or everlasting enemies in the world.

The Feasibility of Prolonged Space Travel
The Feasibility of Prolonged Space Travel My scientifically accurate sci fi paper will focus on long
term space travel on a future mission to a distant exoplanet, such as the recently discovered Kepler
186f, that is thought to be habitable for human life and later colonization. The astronauts travelling to
the exoplanet will have to deal with the effects of space travel such as radiation on their bodies, both
physically and psychologically. The goal of the mission will be to scope out the environment of the
exoplanet to either confirm or deny the existence of life on the exoplanet as well as to evaluate in
person whether or not it is habitable for human life. There will be obstacles such as asteroids in the
path to the exoplanet that the astronauts will have to overcome using their scientific knowledge of
space travel and propulsion. In addition to these obstacles will be issues related to fuel and food
supply, making the journey even more hazardous and causing the astronauts to think critically in order
for the mission to be a success, especially if they plan to attempt to make a return trip. World
renowned physicist Stephen Hawking believes that in order for the human race to survive, it must look
to space for a new place to live [1]. He believes that the earth is too fragile to rely on and that if
humans limit themselves solely to this one planet, the future existence of humanity may be in
jeopardy. Many scientists, such as NASAAdministrator Michael Griffin,

Pros And Cons Of Human Animal Chimera
A chimera is made of cells that are derived from two or more organisms. They can occur in nature. For
example, when two separate sperm fertilize two separate eggs and the embryos somehow fuse together
creating a single fetus with genetically distinguishable cells, tetragametic chimerism occurs. Although,
chimeras are more commonly man made. One way to make a chimera is to introduce the organs of one
organism to another. In organ or tissue transplants, the host receives two genetically distinct cells or
tissues, creating a tissue chimera. The other method is introducing one organism s cells to the embryo
of another and letting them grow together into a hybrid. Scientists have found a way to use this unique
method to create a human chimera. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A human pig hybrid was successfully made with this method. Human animal chimeras are useful as
they can help scientists understand human biology and the mechanisms of human diseases. In one
research, human embryonic stem cells, pluripotent cells, were introduced to the brains of embryonic
mice. The experiment showed that the human cells formed many different and functional neural cell
types and continued to develop into mature and active human neurons within the mouse s brain. These
type of chimeras allow the ideal live environment in which to study human neural development.
Furthermore, these types of chimeras could aid in developing new models of neurodegenerative and
psychiatric diseases possibly speed up drug screenings. In another experiment, human hematopoietic
stem cells, blood forming stem cells, were transplanted in sheep fetuses. These stem cells then formed
the components of blood and the immune system and formed cells such as bone and muscle. The
researchers also found that the hematopoietic stem cells were capable of forming functional human
liver cells. Models such as these have the possibility of making many human liver cells to treat genetic
diseases in fetuses or newborns where the liver cells are

But when you are in trouble, well, we just can t afford to help you, if you are in the working class or

citizens should be taking action towards corruption and greed that s among their towns and cities.
Sanders reviews economic issues every day, he pleads and speaks on the truth and effects of how
America is the dumbing ground of corporate greed and political corruption. From the time of 2010

Conformity In The Film Without My Daughter
Refusing forced conformity can lead to consequences, and an individual can never conform to
anything, without defecting another.
The well known director Brian Gilbert conveyed and explored the theme of conformity in one of his
memorable movies Without my daughter . The movie is extracted from a real life story of Betty
Mahmoody and her daughter Mahtob Mahmoody. The storyline of the movie revolves around an
American couple, the husband is from an Iranian background and he hasn t visited his home country
for more than 10 years. The story progresses as they visit Iran and her husband; Moody steals her

His idea was conveyed and explored in many scenes of the movie. One of the scenes is when Moody s
father wakes him up early every morning to perform the morning prayer that is unbreakable part of the
muslim tradition. Techniques such as facial expressions, dialogue and the tone of voice are used to
express this idea. When Betty in a sleepy tone asks her husband to stay in bed, You ve been getting up
early every morning. Don t go. He replied to her angrily by saying; What s the matter with you? We re
with my family. They re Sayyeds direct descendants of Mohammed. Of course, to a sophisticated
American that must seem primitive. Betty s facial expression were filled with sadness and pure
confusion as she couldn t identify the reason behind her husband s reaction and words. This shows
that Moody was conforming to his family and religion, however he wasn t conforming to his old
lifestyle in America. Also when Betty asked him to stay, she wasn t conforming to the Islamic religion
and tradition. Again Gilbert achieved his goal clearly when he showed live evident of conformity in
the movie, and this further extents the confirmation of the idea that an individual can never conform to

Professor of Education and Sociology at Stanford University, showed the inevitable relationship
between parental income and the academic achievement of students. The income achievement gap as
he defined it is ... the academic performance difference due to ... income difference between a child
from a family at the 90th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1965, it was the first government initiative toward a practical solution in attempting to contain this
uprising income achievement gap as they issued the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
(ESEA). Unsurprisingly, this act gained lots of popularity among education reformers at that time as
its objective was to provide equal education opportunities to all students nationwide whether they are
rich or poor. Nonetheless, the ESEA was just a quick, ready solution to provide funds to schools at that
time but not one that was extensively studied to ensure true equality in distributing those funds. Title I
of the Act, which is still implement in the new version of the ESEA that s now called the No Child
Left Behind Act of 2002, was the most important part which contained the initiative of providing
funds to eligible schools and the way they would be distributed. According to Phyllis McClure, a civil
rights activist who also served in the U.S. Office of Education s Title I Task Force, this Title I in
particular contained a loophole that allowed for poor schools to still not get their equal share of the
funds (McClure). The problem lied in what was called the comparability provision law of Title I
which allowed Title I schools, that uses a traditional budgeting system based on their average teacher
salary, to show a comparable expenditure of their teachers

Bowfishing Research Paper
Basic Bowfishing Accessories Nearly every task is made easier by the presence of a few well chosen
accessories, in addition to the main tools you are going to use. For example, if you are making
candles, you need nothing beyond wax, wicks, a melter, a thermometer, and a mold. However,
accessories such as gloves to protect you from splashes, a bottle of olive oil to help the candles come
loose, and so forth will make your job easier and more pleasant. Similarly, you can paint a ceiling
without a shower cap to protect your hair and drop cloths to shield the floor, but the results are better
if these accessories are present. Bowfishing is no exception to this rule. Although the only absolutely
necessary items are a bow, a set of arrow, and a reel, there are perhaps half a dozen or a dozen items
that will make the experience much easier and far more enjoyable. These accessories give you a boost
in many different ways, from allowing you to carry out simple field repairs on your equipment, to just
making you more comfortable and, after all, bowfishing is supposed to be enjoyable. ... Show more

La Farce de Maitre Pathelin- the character of Guillemette
La Farce de Maitre Pierre Pathelin has been called a little masterpiece . In comparison to most earlier
works of French medieval literature, it is highly complex in many aspects. In the words of Cazamian,
a high level of artistic creation is reached. This essay will focus on Guillemette and study both her role
in the play, and the complex nature of this character. Such a study should give the reader an idea of the
plays high level of artistic creation , and also illustrate some of the many witty double meanings and
underlying messages that are present right throughout the Farce.
Although Guillemette appears in only four of the ten scenes of the Farce (according to the scene
division in the modern French translation), she is much more ... Show more content on

In scene V, a similar comparison can be made between the intelligence of Guillemette and that of the
drapier. It is true that Guillemette has the advantage over the drapier in that she is at home and
Pathelin is on her side against the drapier; but one would still assume that a crafty tradesman would be
more quick witted than a simple housewife. Yet, as already noted above, Guillemette manages to
completely outsmart and deceive the drapier, leaving him dumbfounded. In this scene, as in scenes I
and III, Guillemette s cleverness is clear.
So Guillemette comes across as more intelligent than the other main characters in the play; and, unlike
them, she is not the victim of trickery. The result of this is that Guillemette is the character with whom
the audience can identify with most closely. In a play such as the Farce, where there is no narrator, one
of the characters often plays the role of an intermediary between the characters and the audience. Such
a character encourages the audience to feel more involved in the play and to see it as a reflection of
their own society. In the Farce and it is Guillemette who plays this role, and it is in this way that she is
most important. At no point does she address the audience

Harper Lee, The Sentry By Wilfred Owen, And Good Guys Dead...
Countless authors, all throughout time, can be seen to write about their passions, their experiences or
their opinions on a certain topic. The question has been asked: do any of these authors early life
experiences or the time setting when they grew up in have any impact on why the writer developed the
work? A range of authors and texts are being covered in this report and the content will vary from
World War One experiences to more recent times of racial segregation in America. This report has
been formed to answer questions and form relationships between authors and the reason(s) or any
influence(s) as to why the following authors have developed their work: Harper Lee, Wilfred Owens,
Ernest Hemingway. I decided to investigate the following texts: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee,
The Sentry by Wilfred Owen, To Good Guys Dead by Ernest Hemingway. If the aim is to find out
whether early life experiences of these authors or the time setting when they grew up in promoted or
influenced the development of their work, three questions must be asked for an accurate conclusion to
be drawn: How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing? Where there
any government influences that impacted on the authors writing? Why exactly did the author write the
text?
Question one How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing?

Chapter 29 is composed mainly of letters that were sent between Jerusalem and Babylon. Jeremiah
received information that false prophets in Babylon were telling the exiles they would return home
soon. Therefore, the exiles made little or no effort, to adjust to their new surroundings. When King
Zedekiah sent an official delegation to Babylon, Jeremiah used the occasion to secretly send a letter,
carried by Elasah and Gemariah, two of Jeremiah s few supporters, to the rest of the elders of the
exile, the priests, the prophets and all the people (29: 1 3). Disturbed by their unrealistic attitude,
Jeremiah exhorted them to settle down, build homes, and plant gardens; for he knew they would be in
Babylon many years (25:11).5
The Letter: Jeremiah 29:4 14
The message to the exiles was very practical. First, they should realize that God had sent them into
captivity. There are no greetings from Jeremiah here, no personal words. Instead the letter begins with
This is what the Lord says, as Yahweh addresses the entire exilic community and identifies himself as
the one who exiled them from Jerusalem to Babylon. 6 That being the case, they should make the best
of their situation. The normal activities of life should be resumed. Specifically he mentioned building
houses, planting gardens, and marrying their children. Jeremiah directed them to pray for the

  • 2. Boy by Roald Dahl Roald Dahl uses humour in children books he writes to manipulate the reader s perception of events that occur in the books. The book, Boy is an autobiography written by Roald Dahl. It was his first book and it is a combination of real events in his life. Matilda is one of his fictional books that he wrote later on. Dahl uses events that are actually gruesome and quite horrifying and makes them humorous by using sarcasm, hyperboles, short sentences, imagery, similes and juxtapositions (rose96, 2011). Dahl uses a lot of adjectives to describe the characters in his books to portray them in a humorous way. He uses figures of speech to describe a character and to make this character unique. Chapter 3, The bicycle and the sweet shop in Boy is a perfect example of how Dahl describes the characters in his book. This chapter is about Boy and his friends who absolutely loves the sweet shop. In this chapter het describes the sweet shops importance as ...the very centre of our lives. (Dahl, 1984:33). The only bad thing about this sweet shop was the lady who owned it, Mrs Pratchett. He describes her as a small skinny old hag with a moustache on her upper lip and a mouth as sour as a green gooseberry. (Dahl, 1984:33). Dahl uses a simile to describe her mouth and compares it to a green gooseberry. Dahl then starts to describe how dirty she is. Her apron was grey and greasy. (Dahl, 1984:33). Here we see some alliteration of the words grey and greasy. He goes on describing how she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Cough Airway Muscles Cough is a defensive airway reflex consisting of a sequence of respiratory mechanical events: large inspiratory effort, transient closure of the larynx, and powerful expulsive effort. These respiratory mechanical events are caused by intense contractions of inspiratory muscles, such as the diaphragm, expiratory laryngeal muscles, chest wall, and abdominal muscles. Motoneurons innervating these muscles are located in the brainstem and spinal cord and are controlled by a network of neurons known as the cough pattern generator. The cough pattern generator receives information regarding the mechanical and chemical status of the airways from sensory afferents in the lungs and larynx with axons in the vagus and superior laryngeal nerves. There are a variety of over the counter (OTC) cough suppressant drugs that are available for suppression of cough, most of which have not been shown to be effective (). Even prescription drugs, such as codeine, are now thought to be no more effective than placebo for cough suppression (). OTC preparations containing menthol and similar derivatives with sugary vehicles can be effective in controlling irritating sensations that promote coughing (urge to cough) (). Chronic coughing frequently requires the dedicated intervention of an experienced physician. The presence of cough itself is not a useful diagnostic indicator, as many different disorders are manifest as coughing making diagnosis challenging. The emergence of specific diagnostic protocols, first promoted by Richard Irwin (), have allowed physicians to more effectively diagnose and treat the most common causes of chronic cough ... The European Union (EU) vs the North American Free Trade Agreement Introduction The European Union (EU) is the organization which integrates the countries listed below, both politically and economically. It is a customs union, which is an agreement amongst a group of countries to eliminate trade barriers between them on the movement of goods, services, labor and capital, and also to establish a common external tariff on goods and services coming into the union. The EU evolved from the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which was formed in 1951 as a response to the First and Second World Wars to try to ensure future peace in Europe. Indeed, the ideological foundations that gave birth to the EU were based on ensuring development and maintaining international stability, i.e., the containment of communist expansion in post World War II Europe (Hunt 1989). The Maastricht Treaty which gave birth to the EU in 1992 included considerations for joint policies in regard to military defense and citizenship. Trading blocs could strongly affect a company s investment decision. This particular trading bloc development prompted Ford to realise it could consider Europe to be one common market rather than a collection of individual markets. In 1967, Ford changed its management structure to include its European operations under one umbrella organisation known as Ford Europe Incorporated. Its two large U.K. and German manufacturing centres remained an important dimension of the new strategy, but they were no longer considered separate, independently operating companies. Despite nationalistic tendencies on the part of the host country management, Ford decided that, from the companies perspective, it was best to eliminate national boundaries, and a German director said, The pooling of the two companies cut the engineering bill in half for each company, provided economies of scale, with double the volume in ... Wright , it became clear that both beautifully written pieces were criticisms of the receiver. While writing to Thomas Auld, the former master, Douglass does not go deliberately out of his way to insult Auld, instead, Douglass describes their relationship as long and intimate, by no means friendly [that] unhappily subsisted between [Auld] and [Douglass], leads [Douglass] to hope that [Auld] will easily account for the great liberty which [Douglass] now take in addressing [Auld] in this open and public manner. Douglass does not appreciate the two sided ace of Henry C. Wright because as an advocate of anti slavery, Wright should stand firmly against the sanction of robbing slaves for their independence. However, in this letter, Douglass is audacious of Wright. Douglass does not fear Wright because he knows that slaves who buy their freedom are not doing the correct thing. He knows that he is alright with being in Europe although everything he has ever worked for is in America. Frederick Douglass will not sanction [the government s] right to rob [him] because he is naturally born with the right to be free. Henry C. • 6. Contributions Of Qing Shi Huangdi s Adoption Of Legalism Qing Shi Huangdi s adoption of Legalism was firm (those who opposed the ideology were often executed or banished) and effective, as it led to various fundamental administrative and political developments. For instance, unlike previous dynasties such as the Zhou, the Qin grew to be a highly centralized state with a bureaucracy divided into three primary ministries: a civil authority, a military authority, and a censorate ( World History ) The officials who assumed such roles were examined by an inspection system to reduce the possibility of corruption, which would later serve as the foundation administrative procedure for later dynasties. Furthermore, Legalism resulted in these officials earning their powers rather than inheriting them. Research has speculated that a merit system was probably employed in determining the positions such as an examination. Qin s favor of centralization (perhaps brought by his adoption of Legalism) additionally led to advancements outside of administration and political structure. For instance, he established systems that unified standard measurements, emphasized on monetary values (collection of taxes and distribution of estates included), as well as standardized the Chinese written language. He also organized the construction of roads extending to and from his empire (one of his main achievements was [bringing] together the scattered defensive battlements into what we now know as the Great Wall ( World History ). • 10. Essay on Boer War The Boer War was a conflict that lasted from 1899 to 1902 in southern Africa between Great Britain and their allies, Transvaal (South African Republic) and Orange Free State, in what is now South Africa. Throughout the 19th century, after Great Britain conquered the Cape of Good Hope in 1814 and expanded its territory in Southern Africa, there was tension between the British settlers and the Dutch descended population which were called Afrikaners or Boers. This resulted in the Afrikaner migration called the Great Trek, which was from 1835 to 1843, and the establishment of the Afrikaner republics. These republics were called Natal, Orange Free State, and the South African Republic. Natal became a British colony in 1843, but the Transvaal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The South African Republic and the Orange Free Stated made an alliance. They then declared war on the British on October 12, 1899 because they were uncooperative with Kurger s demands. The Afrikaner forces were successful in invading Natal and Cape Colony. In December the British commander in chief Sir Redvers H. Buller sent fresh troops to relieve the British forces in three war zones. These zones were Colenso, Natal, the hills of Magersfontein on the Orange Free State and Cape Colony borders, and the mountain range of Stormberge in the Cape Colony. Within a week, which is referred to as the Black Week by the British, each of the new units had been defeated by Afrikaner forces. On January 10, 1900, the British general Frederick S. Roberts was sent to replace Buller as commander in chief. However, Buller remained to fight throughout the war. Early in February, Roberts ordered the British commander John D. P. • 12. A Brief Summary Of Chapter One Of All Quiet On The Western... Chapter one of the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (1928) gives insight to the horrific realities soldiers have to face in World War I. Paul Baumer, the narrator and one of the soldiers enlisted to fight for his country, tells the reader that they have just returned back to camp after two weeks of fighting on the front lines. He also notes that more than half of their Company of one hundred fifty men were lost in a gas attack the day before, and this lead to a surplus of leftover food and supplies for the remaining soldiers. The main soldiers in the story visit their friend, Kemmerich, in the hospital, whose leg has been amputated and who is on the verge of death. Remarque uses imagery of Kemmerich in the hospital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul reminisces about the times before he was a soldier, when he still had dreams and aspirations to become a writer, but now, those dreams have become irrelevant and seemingly unreachable. He also brings up the memories of him as a fresh soldier, required to do embarrassing as well as arduous tasks which made the recruits tough and durable, prepping them for the harsh realities of war. Paul also finally experiences the death of Kemmerich, but his mostly emotionless response to his death reveals that soldiers do not and are unable to show their emotion. This type of thing occurs a lot, and the soldiers do not really display their emotion and have lost their capability to properly mourn for their lost brothers. The author juxtaposes the soldiers previous lives before they became who they are now with the experiences they currently face to demonstrate how war destroys their sense of personality and emotions. When Paul talks about the soldiers experiences first being recruited into the military, he mentions how [they] recognized that what matters is not the mind but the boot brush, not intelligence but the system, not freedom but drill (Remarque 22). Paul illustrates the fact that when soldiers are recruited, the soldiers had to completely disregard themselves. The war has become their entire life, and all that really mattered from that point of recruitment on was not their character or personality, but their skill and how well they do on the battlefield. The author wants us to realize that war is a massive detriment to the soldiers enlisted to fight for their country, because it rips away their dreams and personalities, and forces them into an entire life ... A collective agreement was made for a political body to help stabilize much of Europe. The Community provided external political structure that would provide the means necessary to create a stable economy and develop technologies, but in order to do so there would need to be a collective identity of Europe. This struggle to maintain a national identity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The benefit was that nation states could now have their own domestic economy and still benefit from the advancing international markets that were more accessible. However, economics cannot be viewed as an independent unit. How the market works is inadvertently based on a cultural set of ideals and markets can function differently from state to state. In order to formalize an institution to control the economy new regulations must be set in place. In the sense of the European Community all nations states had to join together to create a set of rules that everyone agreed upon. By abiding by new rules nations in return could expect to benefit from a larger political body. This all sounded very promising, a new and stronger institution would regulate the economy, and provide security for the vulnerable post war nations. In doing so, Europe would create a collective identity, a sense of nationality. Although after the war the idea of a stronger unified economy sounded promising it could also be viewed as a hindrance in the long term. The European Community s goal was to create a unification of the nation states but from the viewpoint of a individual state this could be a loss of independence and identity. This communal identity made western European states resemble each other much more than they resembled those of other places or other times. The focus was no longer on ... • 27. The Feasibility of Prolonged Space Travel The Feasibility of Prolonged Space Travel My scientifically accurate sci fi paper will focus on long term space travel on a future mission to a distant exoplanet, such as the recently discovered Kepler 186f, that is thought to be habitable for human life and later colonization. The astronauts travelling to the exoplanet will have to deal with the effects of space travel such as radiation on their bodies, both physically and psychologically. The goal of the mission will be to scope out the environment of the exoplanet to either confirm or deny the existence of life on the exoplanet as well as to evaluate in person whether or not it is habitable for human life. There will be obstacles such as asteroids in the path to the exoplanet that the astronauts will have to overcome using their scientific knowledge of space travel and propulsion. In addition to these obstacles will be issues related to fuel and food supply, making the journey even more hazardous and causing the astronauts to think critically in order for the mission to be a success, especially if they plan to attempt to make a return trip. World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking believes that in order for the human race to survive, it must look to space for a new place to live [1]. For example, when two separate sperm fertilize two separate eggs and the embryos somehow fuse together creating a single fetus with genetically distinguishable cells, tetragametic chimerism occurs. Although, chimeras are more commonly man made. One way to make a chimera is to introduce the organs of one organism to another. In organ or tissue transplants, the host receives two genetically distinct cells or tissues, creating a tissue chimera. The other method is introducing one organism s cells to the embryo of another and letting them grow together into a hybrid. Nonetheless, the ESEA was just a quick, ready solution to provide funds to schools at that time but not one that was extensively studied to ensure true equality in distributing those funds. Title I of the Act, which is still implement in the new version of the ESEA that s now called the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, was the most important part which contained the initiative of providing funds to eligible schools and the way they would be distributed.
