Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie is the Curator and Head of Physical Anthropology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Case Western Reserve University. He conducts research on early human evolution in Africa. His work centers on the Afar region of Ethiopia where he and his team survey large areas looking for fossil remains of early humans and other animals to better understand the paleobiology and paleoecology of these early humans and, ultimately, our origins. His research has been published in top scientific journals, including Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow at the Institute of the Science of Origins (Case Western Reserve University) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

During the last ice age, lower sea levels allowed humans to cross a land bridge called Beringia from Asia to North America around 13,000 years ago, following animal herds. Archaeological evidence like Clovis points found throughout the Americas also indicate humans arrived here after the last Ice Age and hunted mammoths and bison.
Spinops sternbergorum
Spinops sternbergorum was a new species of ceratopsian dinosaur discovered in 1916 in Alberta, Canada by father and son Charles and Levi Sternberg. The skull fragments were initially deemed unimportant and shelved. In 2011, paleontologists led by Dr. Andrew Farke recognized the significance of the fragments and identified them as a new species, providing insights into links between Centrosaurus and Styracosaurus. At about 10-20 feet long and 2 tons, Spinops lived 76 million years ago on the coastal plains of late Cretaceous Alberta among cypress trees and other plant life.

- 2. Why did the Europeans want to explore? To find Gold, Natural Resources and Trade Routes
- 3. Why did the Europeans want to explore? To spread their religion-- Christianity
- 4. Why did the Europeans want to explore? They wanted to help make their empire/country the BEST or superior AND They believed in the superiority of their own culture.
- 5. Obstacles to Exploration: Bad/Poor Maps (Early explorers thought the world was flat. They didn’t know that North or South America were here) Bad/Poor Navigational Tools (If they would have had better tools, they would’ve known about North and South America)
- 6. Obstacles to Exploration Fear of the Unknown (early sea travelers thought there were sea monsters like the Loch Ness Monster) Lack of adequate supplies (They didn’t pack enough food or water for the trip. Many men starved to death and Others ate rats to survive.)
- 7. Accomplishments of Exploration Exchanged goods and ideas (food, clothing, new trade partners) Improved navigational tools and ships Claimed Territories

- Ask clarification questions first: What is another word for Motivating? Obstacles? Accomplishments? Ask the students to hypothesize about answers to each of those questions. Have students take notes using this power point and then have the students illustrate the statements.
