Argumentative Essay
The ability to have ownership over something, tangible or not, can give a person a sense of value
or superiority when comparing themselves to others. Furthermore, as humans, it is easy to desire
things as one s own and claim it, but the way something is treated differs from person to person. As
a result, the material items and skills a person has ownership over provides a glimpse of his or her s
true nature.
According to Plato, the ownership of objects can hold a detrimental stake to the character of a
person. When applied to a more specific case, such as slavery in America where the concept of
owning people as property was a recurring norm in various societies, a vivid description about the
white southern males who owned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike tangible goods, education and skills, for the most part, should come free and there are no
limits or an extent placed on such concepts. Everyday, people are given an opportunity to learn,
in school or from their surroundings, and gain experiences that they will own forever. According
to Albert Einstein, there is no limit to how much one can learn and that intellectual growth will
only cease at death. This determination to strive to improve and extend on one s intellect and
skills develops from the ownership of such intangible characteristics that make up a person.
Einstein makes a point to never give up ownership of one s own ability to freely learn and
express curiosites, and while it seems impossible to have intangible objects taken, history reveals
times where it has occurred. The most prominent occurrence would be that of Rosa Parks who,
aware of her civil rights, stood her ground and refused to subjugate to the racist acts that attempted
to strip her of her identity, humanity, and freedom. Through her inspiring actions, Parks revealed
how a woman can have the power to be courageous and that African Americans will no longer be
enslaved to corrupt ideals attempting to rob them of

Flatland Analysis
Flatland
There are many things in this world, and in others, that I believe cannot be fully understood. For
example, in the story of Flatland, A. Square explains his world and what he thinks of ours. To him,
our world has space, thus calling it Spaceland, which is something they do not have in Flatland,
hints the name Flat land. In effort to explain the difference in the worlds, one would find it
confusing and hard to comprehend Abbott s writing, especially for those of us who have only been
told and informed about the world of three dimensions. In mentioning of only being informed of
one subject, I would like to bring to your attention that there are some things some people are
totally oblivious to. I bet you knew there are children and adolescents that do not have as much as
you do. You probably know there are starving,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Did The Dutch Make New Netherland
As the English neglected mid atlantic area the Dutch and Swedes were able to create their own
colonies of New Netherland and New Sweden. As the crown made many royal charters to
establish Proprietary colonies slowly England began to convert some of its colonies into royal
colonies. This took a long time to recognize less profitable colonies such as New Englandwhich was
very against becoming a royal colony. To try and impress the New English, England conquered New
Netherland showing its intimidating power. Although small the New Netherland colony was very
remarkable showing Dutch power. Netherlands the home of the Dutch was very big into policies of

In 1614 the Dutch established Fort Orange with the goal of creating a fur trade with the Indians.
Very small Fort Orange could be easily seized by French enemies and the Dutch saw that
establishing a large settlement would be the best way to protect the fur trade. In 1625 the Dutch
created the town of New Amsterdam. This town led to the creation of more agricultural settlements
creating New Netherlands. Unlike English and Spanish colonists the Dutch had come for economic
purposes with no intention of any missionary effort. This helped relations between the Dutch and
Indians and thus helping their trade efforts. The Dutch made great efforts to avoid conflict which
sadly ended as a governor requested payment from Algonquian Indians which led to two colonists
being murdered creating high tensions between New Netherlands and the Indians. As Kieft
murdered eighty Indians many other river tribes were outraged and unleashed attacks on the
settlements around New Amsterdam. To deal with this the Dutch hired Captain John Hill who with
merciless tactics defeated the Algonquians and severely reduced their

The Management Of A Company
How would you feel if you owned part of a company, but could not help make any decisions on the
future of the company? Those who own majority of the company decide to hire mangers to make
important decisions on your company. This is a general example on how shareholders run their
company. Now wouldn t you rather help make decision, or be able to factor in ideas from the
employees and community that has helped the business grow? If so, you might want to consider
the stakeholders theory. Different stakeholders can hold varying amounts of influence and interest,
within the organization. For example, consider a factory worker. An individual worker has large
interests in the company, in terms of working conditions, salary, and benefits.... Show more content

Internal stakeholders are described as the managers and employees of a company. Connected
stakeholders are those that are beyond the immediate boundaries of the firm, while external
stakeholders are those who are outside the firm. Some would say it is rather difficult to argue the
stakeholders theory because there is not as much information on the subject as there is
shareholders theory. They would argue that shareholders own most corporations; and presently,
corporations owned by stakeholders would be unsuccessful in the long run. There has been some
debate on the legitimacy of the concept of the stakeholder, according to Friedman and Miles. The
stakeholder concept has not gone unchallenged. Many have reiterated the alternative stakeholder
positions. Others have challenged implications of the stakeholder concept for certain groups
(Friedman and Miles 118). Friedman and Miles go on to argue how stakeholders can weaken an
organization, and even alter its long term characteristics. Assume that the stakeholder concept is
infallible and consider the example of the factory worker. The company is publicly owned and is
located in a more economically developed country (MEDC), where it will have a weaker influence
from the government when compared to government owned companies. Labor unions associated
with the company will likely be strong and workers will have a higher influence than they would in
a less economically developed country (LEDC) where unions are

Themes In Lord Byron s When We Two Parted
Lord Byron s When We Two Parted details the experiences of a man who has just been
heartbroken by someone who he thought would love him forever, but seemingly never loved
him. He in that moment realizes that nothing will be the same, as any time he hears the name of
his former lover, he will be struck with grief and regret, basking in the shame that he allowed
them to hurt him so. Although When We Two Parted can be used as a lens to glimpse inside the
mind of someone who has just been heartbroken, it can also serve as a mirror for Lord Byron s
life and his change in outlook on ideas such as infinity and the everlastingness of a promise.
Lord George Gordon Byron was born on January 22, 1788 in London with a twisted foot. He was
primarily raised destitute by his mother, the family fortune having been wasted by his father s
gambling affiction. While not officially divorced, his parents lived separately until the death of
his father in 1791, as they could not stand living in the same house. His mother enrolled him in
the Aberdeen Grammar School in 1798, where he began writing and developed a fascination with
politics. In that same year, he inherited the Barony of Byron of Rochdale in addition to the Byron
family home in Newstead after the death of his uncle. Unfortunately for Byron, not much money
came with the inheritance as well, as his uncle had also squandered the majority of it. In 1805,
Byron enrolled in Trinity College at Cambridge, and three years later had an

The Issue Of Health Care
Prison Health Care in Canada
The issue of health care reform has been a major concern for various households and members of
the society for a long while. Health care reforms in North America seems to be a topic of
discussion that each government of the comprising nations considers a priority based on the major
issues related to financing, instituting health care, supporting education programs, and increasing
the number of heath care services to meet the demand of health care users. While health care is a
problematic topic when considered generally, in specific occasions and settings, health care is
approached in different ways rather than the standardized approach. The Canadian Prisons are an
example of places where health care is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference between the normal budgeting and prison budgeting for health care makes a logical
case in this essay. However, the inscribing of health care issues into the prison environment
provides an opportunity to assess how the different settings approach the same issues and a chance
to recommend methods of increasing health care awareness and viability in Canadian Prisons.
Ethical Issues
Conditions of Canadian Prisons
Prison health care in Canada is approached from a number of perspectives. There are proposals
that more funding should be allocated to ensure that medical equipment in prisons is vamped up to
accommodate the demand for health care services (CanLII, 2014). The Code of Ethics for
Registered Nurses delineates the ethical standards for nurses across all settings, levels and roles,
setting expectations as well as providing guidance (Canadian Nurses Association [CNA], 2008).
One of the common ethical concerns that arises for the correctional nurse relates to demonstrating
caring in a custody environment. Correctional nurses must find balance in displaying an attitude of
care and compassion while recognizing and maintaining safe boundaries. Another area of ethical
concern is the nurse s responsibility for ensuring that patients have access to care. The values
associated with nursing practice include nurse advocacy, respect for humans and eliminating
barriers to care (CNA, 2008). The correctional

Ancient Calendars Essay
Time Keepers
Celestial bodies the sun, moon, planets, and stars have provided us a reference for measuring the
passage of time throughout human existence. Ancient civilizations like: China, India, Babylon, and
Greece relied upon the apparent motion of these bodies through the sky to record and determine
seasons, months, and years. We know little about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras.
However, records and artifacts usually uncover that in every culture, people were preoccupied with
measuring and recording the passage of time. Stonehenge, built over 4000 years ago in England has
no written records, but its alignments show its purposes apparently included the determination of
seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Luckily, our neighbors to the East, the Arabs, found the documents to be of great interest and kept
old Greek astrological records. In the Renisannce period of Christianity the church officials decided
to re examine the ancient records, and actually found some validity in some of the scientific data.
Amazingly enough the Christian church decided to implement data from ancient pagan cultures to
help create the most widely used calendar to date, the Gregorian calendar.
Ancient Greek astronomers made some amazing mathematical and philosophical discovers about
our universe. From the Hellenistic Greek observations in approximately 300 B.C.E., to the
invention of the first telescope in the seventeenth century, to the launching of today s space probes,
one thing is evident: astrological observations are imperative to creating a calendar.
Currently, the concept of a year is based on the earth s motion around the sun. The time from one
fixed point, such as a solstice or equinox, to the next is called a tropical year; its length is
currently 365.242. Our concept of a month is based on the moon s motion around the earth,
although this connection has been broken in the calendar commonly used now, the Gregorian
calendar. The time for the moon to complete a full cycle of phases is called a synodic month, and
its length is currently 29.53 days. Note that these numbers are averages. The actual length of a

Why Is Individual Liberty Important
I believe in individual liberty it is extremely importance to any society. One thing that is
important to an individual liberty is freedom, which I value the most today. Freedom give people
the opportunity to speak, the right to their own opinion and pursue happiness. Freedom is very
important to every human being because it gives you a chance to express yourself and give you
an overall quality of life. However, there is certain limitations when it comes to freedom that we all
must live with and that is the laws that we all must obey.
People have the right to freedom of speech however, every person is responsible for their own
action, life, and well being, everyone should be judge individually regardless of race, gender, and

Synthetic Proteins And Cellular Components Essay
Now with the GFP in the lysate solution with other soluble proteins and cellular components, we
need a strong and specific process that targets only the GFP and not the other parts of the
mixture. This strong and specific process used is called affinity chromatography, in which one
substance can be purified by using its specific interaction with another substance. In this case,
GFP has six histidines at its N terminus which can easily bond to Ni2+and this interaction can be
used to purify the GFP from the lysate by using a Ni NTA column. This Ni NTA column allows
for solutions to follow through except components that can easily bond to the immobilized Ni2+
ion in the column s silica matrix. Before we could use the Ni NTA column, we had to equilibrate
it by adding some binding buffer to the column that washes and prepares the column and then
centrifuge. After the column is ready for use, the bacterial lysate can be added to the column, with
some left for later analysis. The column is then centrifuged in order for the mixture to flow
through the matrix and separate those components that can bind to Ni2+ (not necessarily only
GFP) and those that simply flowed through. The liquid from the collection tube is collected and
transferred into a tube and labeled F for flow through (Figure 1, lane F). At this point the GFP is
bound to Ni2+ in the matrix of the Ni NTA column, however it is not alone. Many other proteins
and cellular components may have bound to the column as well due

Family Is Family Essay
Family is what you make it. When someone asks you, who is in your family how do you
answer? Do you tell them your mother? Your father? Sisters and Brothers? Do you tell them you
don t have any? Do you say I have family but they are not blood? Do you simply tell them you are
alone in the world? Who and what do you consider family? Family is not a mother that leaves her
child with its grandparents to sell herself to men for drugs. A mother that gives up custody of her
children, and dumps them on other family members to one day not return. A mother that makes her
six year old daughter stand on the street corner, and beg for money. A mother that tries to kill her
child by beating her head into a bed frame, until her head looks like hamburger meat. A mother that
starves her child so that she can have her next fix. A mother that cut all ties with her children, until
she needs something.
Family is not a father that rather forget about his daughter. A father that is forced to spend time
with his child. A father that spends all his time with his children from his second wife. A father that
works less than ten miles from his child, but can t even stop by to say hi. A father that drinks too
much. A father that goes twenty years without speaking to his child.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Personal Statement
Eighteen years it took me to become a pediatric emergency medicine specialist. As my journey in
academics started, I faced the challenge and responsibility of being a single parent. Seeking
opportunities to learn about economics and finance, I did what came naturally to me, which was
study. Eighteen months of doing the unthinkable : working full time, studying full time, and raising
a six year old, was the most exhausting and yet the most inspiring time of my life. Travelling to
Asia to write a thesis comparing the Japanese and American health insurance industry, added a
global flavor to my knowledge of medicine.
Fueled by an interest in research, I received a scholarship for Ph.D. studies after medical school.
Life events interrupted this journey, making it necessary to move from cities, and even countries. I
made an unthinkable move to Australia, right after being promoted at the university. Each change
has required patience and persistence, forcing me to look beyond hurdles and seek opportunities
for growth. As a foreign medical graduate, in two countries, I have had to prove my skill as a
physician and my specialist fellowships in both the U.S. and Australia substantiates this. Through
every stage of my training and academic career, I have sought out opportunities to further my
understanding of the science behind the practice of medicine. ... Show more content on

optimum function and potential required for a nation to thrive. Obeying the law leads to a safe

An Analysis Of Zora Neale Hurston s Trifles By Susan...
In a male dominated society, women were believed to be fragile weaklings that depended on men
in order to survive and find happiness. In fact, they were seen as nothing more than selfless wives
and mothers. The seemingly perfect wife then, was characterized by her dutifulness and obedient
demeanor. This notion of male supremacy was undoubtedly the predominant basis of the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries. Rendered unable to voice their own opinions, women then turned to pen
and paper as a way to communicate their thoughts. From this, arose the following pieces: Kate
Chopin s short story The Story of an Hour, Emily Dickinson s poem She rose to His Requirement

The story takes place during the harsh and relentless winter, serving as a key symbol since Mrs.
Hale describes Mr. Wright as a raw wind that gets to the bone (Glaspell 19). In this sense, the
desolate environment outside parallels the atmosphere inside the Wright s home. The cold presence
of her husband has confined Mrs. Wright and created a loneliness that was unbearable, leading her
to eventually murder him.
While Glaspell communicates women s view of marriage through significance of the canary and

like an interview; you must recollect memories of times you were successful at work and in
academics. With Wix, the website builder, I was able to design the site how I wanted it to look. I
remember creating a Wix website about five years ago and the advancement of the online

of my POP are the sections in which you can scroll from slide to slide. Instead of crowding my
website with boxes and forcing the reader s eyes to shoot everywhere, I designed my interests and
academic projects areas into a single box with a sliding queue. Of course, the interests and

Risks And Risks Of Risk Analysis
a.Risk Analysis is the process of defining and analyzing the dangers to individuals, business and
government agencies posed by potential natural and human caused adverse events. In IT, a risk
analysis report can be used to align technology related objectives with a company s business
objectives. A main objective of a business is to determine the potential RE a.k.a RiskImpact, or the
probability of a potential loss. These expected values give you a sense of how much loss your
company may take, before you can implement mitigation actions.
b.As a project manager it is important to expect and prepare for unexpected events. With risk
management you can identify your projects weaknesses, strengths, and threats that may have your
project in a negative aspect. Risk Analysis is important because it may help you avoid or mitigate
these risks. As a project manager it is part of their responsibility to make sure that team is prepared
for these expected risks.
c.When it comes to Risk Analysis there is a formula that is used to derive an estimated impact of
each risk. Risk Analysis = Probability of Loss * Size of Loss. For example if the probability of a
risk, at some cost, is 30% over an 8 year period, every 2.4 you would estimate an expected risk at
some cost.
d.Once you have an expected risk analysis, as a project manager you would need to enforce a
mitigation plan to avoid, or mitigate these risks. As a project manager you have the choice to share,
accept, or control the

State Intervention and the Economy Essay
It is widely believed by scholars that many of the varying levels of economic development between
states are the direct result of a negative correlation between the aforementioned and the varying
degrees of state intervention. In most cases it is evident that the more a state intervenes in its
economy, the less the country will develop. While, at the same time, a country whose intervention
exists at a minimal level will tend to have a stronger economy and a more rapid rate of
development. However, it is also important to understand that as with many concepts there will
always be extreme cases where the states may not strictly follow this model; in some cases they
may even behave completely opposite. These extreme cases are often due to... Show more content

However, an advocate for government failure would argue that were this to occur the market would
be worse off due to the fact that bureaucrats often pursue their best interests which may not
necessarily coincide with those of the public. In support of this belief it can be argued that since
bureaucratic agents are not elected officials they are able to implement various policies without fear
of any negative consequences such as not winning a reelection. As can be inferred from the
concepts of market and government failure; government intervention is not necessarily always a
bad thing. In fact, sometimes it can lead to the advancement of a nation. Governments whose
bureaucracies act in such a way can also be referenced as developmental states ; which means that
although the government is interfering with the economy, the bureaucracy is focusing on the long
term interest of the country versus the personal gain of a select few in the short term. Amsden
writes about this concept in his article, Getting Relative Prices Wrong : A Summary, by bringing up
the idea that, ...it promises industrial expansion if the state is strong enough merely to provide
enough political stability for a long term investments, to point prices in the right direction, and then
to exit (Amsden 147). Amsden argues that governments such as Korea, although not necessarily

Critical Thinking Skills And The Little Albert Episode
Critical Thinking Skills and the Little Albert Episode
Ethics remains unavoidable in most disciplines, and psychology is no exception. John Watson s
experiment deserves the current criticism because it failed to observe informed consent and
protection from harm principle. The controversy arises from the principle of beneficence and non
maleficence. The principle requires psychologists, in this case, John Watson, and his student to
benefit and care for his subjects. During the Experiment, Albert was nine months old. The age of
the infants forms the first unethical behavior by Watson. The APA code requires psychologists to
ensure justice, integrity, respect for people s rights and dignity, responsibility and fidelity, and
beneficence and non maleficence. The experiment is unethical as most of the activities did not
practice justice and integrity to the involved human subject.
The Little Albert experiment was conducted to underline the methods to an unlimited extent.
Beneath the research among John Watson, and Rosalie Rayner s Little Albert there were many
controversy behaviors linked to the code of ethics. During the controversial psychological study
conducted the experiment among a nine month old child; Albert little, and Watson. The experiment
was based on the emotional behavior of fear by Pavlov. He pursued to reveal how human being

Explain How To Get Rid Of An Ugly Tree Stump
Ways To Remove An Ugly Tree Stump From Your Yard
If you lose a tree due to a storm or disease, you may be able to chop up most of the tree for easy
disposal, but you re still faced with the problem of stump removal. Getting rid of tree stumps is
difficult because of their size and the fact they are firmly rooted into the ground. Getting the stump
out of the ground is hard enough, but then you have to figure out what to do with it. Here s what
you need to know.
Why You Should Remove A Stump
If you have a huge yard and the tree stump is in a back corner, it may be acceptable to let it
decompose naturally over a period of years. If the stump is in your front yard, you should
probably get rid of it to keep it from being an eyesore. Even if you get it shaved down close to the
soil, it still looks bad. You can try to cover it with potted plants or yard ornaments, but you can t
really hide the fact you have an ugly tree stump in your yard. Another reason to get rid of a stump
is so it won t attract ants and termites. You don t want a big colony of carpenter ants to take up
residence in your yard and wander into your house to set up satellite nests. ... Show more content on

That takes a lot of work even if you have a tractor or truck to help. The big problem with pulling
up a big stump is how you re going to dispose of it. You may have to pay a fee if you haul it to
the dump. First, you have to figure out how to lift and transport it. Unless you live in the country
and can toss the stump out of the way or bury it out of sight, it may be better to destroy the stump
while it s still in place.

Walnut Street Jail Thesis
Walnut Street Jail
The Walnut Street Jail was first built as a city jail in 1773 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The jail
was named after the streets it was located in which were sixth and Walnut streets. The Jail then
expanded in 1790 in which a penitentiary house was added. Walnut Street Jail is considered the
United States first penitentiary house because no other jail was single celled. During that time,
jails that existed did not believe in the idea that inmate can change. The jail was built in
Pennsylvania due to overcrowding in another jail called High Street Jail. Even though Walnut
Street Jail opened as a local jail, they also had a plan for their inmates. This plan was to look at

Even though the prison was improving its conditions, they did not think about expanding even

the overcrowding, it was impossible. With the overcrowding, prisoners began to fight each other

the jail failed due to poor architecture and lack of staying organized. About 30 to 40 inmates
were being placed in one room where they would all have to seep on the floor. It failed to focus
on their goal which was to keep prisoners separately so that they could self reflect. Later, the

U.S. Entry into WWII
The United States, at the time of World War II, was facing an economic depression which
concerned the American public and President Roosevelt because they knew that America s
involvement with the war was inevitable. Most resources state that the United States entered
World War II largely unprepared (America and Word War II 610). However, due to the fact that
while preparing for the war there was an increase in economic growth, African Americans and
women became more involved in industry and the military, and President Roosevelt incorporated
several acts and embargos that encouraged Americans to produce more supplies as well as

Most of the men who were preparing for war did not have any prior military experience nor were
they trained well, and the forces reflected the prejudices of society which conflicted with unit
cohesion (Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum). One social issue that was a
problem in the goal to become a united force for battle was the fact that the army was still
segregated. In 1941, the Double V campaign was introduced, which stated that by integrating
African Americans into the army it would accomplish two victories: a defeat over Hitler s
racism overseas, and a victory over racism in the homeland (America and World War II 616).
What branched out of this campaign was an African American unit in the army air force referred
to as the 99th pursuit squadron, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The training of this fighter
squadron was a crucial element in the United States preparedness for war. The Tuskegee Airmen
became so successful throughout the war as bomber escorts that they help reduce the amount of
fallen Bombers by eighty six percent, which played an important role in the overall success of
the Allies over Germany (Haulman 21). Additionally, women, too, became more involved in
helping America prepare for war. With all the men who once worked in the factories preparing to

The first three songs of the Album are a truly unsafe intro to the streets of South central L.A,

time when the streets are frustrated with the police for police brutality, harassment, racism, and
being labeled as thugs. The frustration has reached its limits with protests and outrage by the
public when the police refused to provide security for the N.W.A concert tours, as if the police
picked its side against whoever takes part of the movement against its own harassments to the
African American community in Compton. In 1989, a rare scene in the history of music occurred
when the F.B.I notably sent a message to Ruthless Records, the label company for N.W.A,
excoriating the music and all of its content. The message have caused the N.W.A to put it out to

In Everyday Use , there is also isolation and oppression between the mother daughter relationship

the family who only stays in the sub urban area and receives less or no education. She is exposed
to the values of the new world with civil rights and equality, which Mama has totally no idea of

autonomy and individuality after receiving education. These are the things that Mama has not got

example, Dee wants to use the churn top and quilts as artistic uses and she do not understand why
they are backward enough to put them to everyday use . Mama however sees the churn top as a

The Advantages of Color Vision Essay
When we think of color vision, we imagine the variety of colors the human eye can see. Perhaps
people may believe having color vision is a huge benefit for animals as opposed to having
dichromatic or even monochromatic vision. If that would be the case, then why do not all the
animals have color vision? A thought to keep in mind is what is the purpose of seeing colorfor
animals. We will dive deeper into how color visionmay play a role in the lives of animals and
humans. The different groups of animals we will examine are the marine animals, wild Neotropical
monkeys, primates, and humans as well. The first area that will be covered will be animals with
monochromatic vision. We must know what it means to have monochromatic vision before... Show

The heterozygote superiority hypothesis is in question because it states that animals that have
trichromatic vision have a fitness advantage over those that do not (Fedigan 1). This is referring
to animals who have less than three cones of vision. There is a group of wild Neotropical
monkeys that have polymorphic vision. This means the group has members that either have
dichromatic or trichromatic vision. The thought is the trichromatic members can find fruits or
fresh leaves better than those with dichromatic vision because of distinguishable colors of fruit
that can be seen with trichromatic vision (Fedigan 1). This idea fits the heterozygote superiority
hypothesis. At first the hypothesis seemed correct based on a study that used tamarins because
the one with the three cones of vision was able to spot patches of food more easily. The issue
that comes into play is that there is no good evidence for wild populations. Work that was done
on Capuchins to see who had an advantage on feeding based on the type of vision they had. The
result was that neither seemed to have a significant advantage over the other. Because animals are
able to use other senses when foraging for food trichromacy may in fact provide little advantage
(Bunce 1060). More studies were conducted by Linda Fedigan to find out the survival rate of
infants whose mother had either trichromatic or dichromatic vision. The

The Effects Of Optimism On Cancer Survival Rate
The previous section has shown that previous study had yielded contradictory results. To account
for the inconsistent findings, we have to first understand the inner mechanisms of the effects of
optimism on cancer survival rate. Salovey (2000) has proposed various potential casual pathways
from dispositional optimism to cancersurvival outcomes. One of the potential mediators of
optimism and survival outcome might be immune system. In other words, optimism tends to
enhance the immune system which in turn enhance cancer survival rate. Indeed, Ah (2007)
examines the intimate connections among social support, optimism, and immune response. Ah
hypothesized that optimism plays a mediating role for immune response and cancer outcome. 54
cancer patients participated in the study. They completed questionnaires regarding stress level,
optimism, and satisfaction social support. Participants blood was assessed to measure the immune
system (ex., white blood cell such as natural killer cell. The results showed that only optimism is
associated with immune response and cancer prognosis, while perceived satisfaction of social
support was not associated immune response.
Given that immunology mediate the relationship between optimism and cancer survival rate, it is
possible that the inconsistent results of the previous studies might be accounted by mechanisms
related to immunology.
One possible explanation might be that previous studies looked at different types of cancer, while
some type

Introduction:
Al Shabaab as a terrorist group poses a significant threat in Somalia and in the global community.
This paper will start by discussing the background. In this part the paper will show how the group
has evolved from Al Ittihad Al Islam (AIAI) to the Islamic Court Union (ICU) and lastly to Al
Shabaab. Before discussing the group s threat of national security, homeland and international, this
paper will provide the conceptual meaning of key terminology, such as national security, homeland
security, international security and globalization. It is important to understand these concepts
before moving toward the main argument of the paper. After providing the framework for key
concepts, the paper will discuss the group s threat to Somalia in two areas, national security and
homeland security. The paper will go further and identify the threats posed by the group on other
nations homeland security and international security. We will use East African countries and the
United States examples. The paper will provide evidence to support how globalization has shaped
and fueled the threats from Al Shabaab. It will then discuss the primary response from the United
States and from African countries through AMISOM. The paper will provide the way forward and
suggestions for the response of the international community to Al Shabaab. In conclusion, we will

High Rates Of Adverse Neonatal Outcomes
Abstract
Background: High rates of adverse neonatal outcomes have been reported among women with HIV.
In high income countries, small for gestational age (SGA) and pre term birth (PTB) are among the
most prevalent of these outcomes and have been variously associated with antiretroviral treatment,
ethnicity/race, psychosocial risk and lack of prenatal care. While evidence demonstrates that both
medical and social factors contribute to LBW and PTD, risk factors for HIV positive women in
Ottawa, Canada, have not been well described.
Objective: To estimate the proportion and risk factors of SGA and PTB outcomes and characterize
temporal trends among HIV positive women giving birth at an urban hospital in Ottawa, Canada.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study reviewed all cases of pregnant women with HIV
receiving prenatal care and/or giving birth at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) between June 1990 and
July 2010. Data were collected on socio demographics, medical history, and adverse obstetric
outcomes. Univariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with small for
gestational age (90% health insurance coverage in our cohort, which provides for HIV and

Chemical Mental Enhancement:
Changing the Direction of the Psyche Throughout history, mankind has always been interested in
getting more of anything to the point at which some go absolutely insane. For example, mankind
has not been totally satisfied with the human mind and its natural capabilities, which has led to
countless attempts of manipulation. This manipulation of the psyche, a partially uncharted topic of
human knowledge, can be triggered through certain chemicals. These chemicals have helped and
stimulated the minds of many who use them properly, but have also hurt and depressed many who
have used them improperly. Those that intermeddle with the brains functions through chemical

Compare And Contrast Shakespeare And Sonnet 130
Shakespeare s Lovely Sonnets
William Shakespeare is a famous playwright and poet whose pieces are still well known in the
modern world. Some of these well known pieces are his sonnets written about love. Sonnet 18 and
Sonnet 130 are examples of these love poems. These sonnets convey Shakespeare s love in different
ways. Sonnet 18 expresses superiority over another subject, and Sonnet 130 expresses uniqueness.
Although the attitudes of Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130 are different, Shakespeare uses comparisons,
exaggerations, and vivid words to portray the message of love in both sonnets. First of all,
Shakespeare wrote Sonnet 18 to essentially complement the poem itself and his own writing. To

Sonnet 130 is about Shakespeare s mistress. In this poem, he uses comparisons to describe his
mistress as ugly. One comparison that Shakespeare makes is, If hairs be wires, black wires grow
on her head. In this comparison, Shakespeare relates hairs to wires to represent the coarseness of
the hair of his mistress. When read by itself, the comparison does not display love. Yet later on in
the poem, Shakespeare explains that even though her mistress may be uglier when compared to
other women, but she is rare and unique. The fact that Shakespeare considers his love as rare
shows that he loves her. Although the comparison itself in Sonnet 130 is negative while the
comparison in Sonnet 18 is positive, both poems compare one subject to another to enhance the
feeling of the topic of the poem. To continue, Sonnet 130 also has exaggerations to amplify the
descriptions of Shakespeare s mistress. For example, when Shakespeare writes, My mistress
eyes are nothing like the sun, he shows that his mistress eyes are dull in comparison to eyes of
other people. He makes the mistress eyes seem even uglier as he uses the sun to represent other
people s eyes. Similarly to the comparison, the exaggeration gives his mistress a negative
description. Yet, towards the end of the poem, he considers his love to be rare, which displays his
love. In a similar

This article by Jacques Ellul on Techniques is very fascinating. The writer discusses of machines
and its relationship with technique which has been described nicely. Technique is a way of doing
something that fulfills a goal or an aim, in an organized manner. It is an art to do the work in a
very meaningful and efficient way to reach the best results. Early civilizations have seen the man
growing up in many aspects, this approach and ability to invent new things is called technique .
The term Techniques is greatly confused with either scienceor machines. Both rely on the term
Technique for their existence and to some extent depend on it. But technique itself is independent
and is not referred only to machines and science. Today we ... Show more content on

Technical activity is the most primitive activity of man. For example: activities like hunting,
fishing, clothing, food gathering, building shelters, and weapons making all used technique. How
did man started domesticating animal or chose certain plants to cultivate is a mystery not
explained. Who motivated man for this? Is it some divine power or magic? Maybe there was a
spiritual power to guide the man to use such techniques. Such things can be explained from the life
of our ancestors. Be it Greeks and Romans using new techniques for building new arms for military
or inventing Archimedes principle. Or be it people from East making finest silks. The decline of
technical aspect occurred due to Christians who revolted against anything that was technical.
Christians believed anything that is technical is against nature and so there were public burning of
books which had explained techniques and anyone who supported new techniques was labeled as a
traitor.
But during the industrial revolution why there was a sudden emergence of technical progress and
why it had not occurred before is a question which can be answered by relating it to scientific
progress. It was the close connection in technical invention and scientific research which was
responsible for the research that was done primarily in areas where technically it

Reflection Of Music In This Little Light Of Mine
Music is defined as the vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to
produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of music. What truly exemplifies this
definition is the performance entitled This Little Light of Mine in which performers, Donald
Craig Manuel and Charles Lloyd Jr, took the stage to deliver a beautiful duo that s consisted of
Mr. Manuel s Baritone voice and Mr. Lloyd s performance on the piano. Mr. Donald Manuel
performed twelve compositions in which ten of them were sacred pieces that expressed how much
he loved the Lord and the other four were taken from major events he performed for such as:
Festival of the Lion Kingat Hong Kong Disneyland, major productions abroad the Disney
Dream, and musical numbers from popular Disney films. Even though each of these pieces
were different in context they had numerous similarities such as: all of them being polyphonic,
crescendo and decrescendo were used extensively, dynamics were used frequently, each piece
was set to a walking tempo (Andante), each piece had the qualities of an opera, and he used
vibrato in all his compositions. Even though all his performed pieces were brilliantly performed,
the three compositions that stood out to me were: Ride on King Jesus by Hall Johnson, This
Little Light O Mine by John Work, and Be prepared by E. John and T. Rice. The first piece that was
performed, Ride of King Jesus, is a sacred, polyphonic piece that was performed in Low D flat in
quadruple meter.

The Role Of Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter stood out as a revolutionary work of writing when it was first published in
1850, mainly because of Nathaniel Hawthorne s radical main character Hester Prynne. The novel s
influence and Hawthorne s legacy can still clearly be seen in its use in schools today, as well as its
lasting popularity with readers. As the novel has persisted throughout literary history, its themes,
symbolism, and characters have been examined under many different lenses. It is arguable in our
present day circumstances that Hester and her role in the novel still represent and uphold the innate
feeling of what is known today as feminism.
One of the lenses that The Scarlet Letter has fallen under throughout the years is feminist literary
criticism. The definition of feminism given today states that it is the advocacy of women s rights
on the basis of the equality of the sexes, however, this is a broad definition that does not necessarily
encompass the feelings of this movement, feelings which can be found in the character of Hester
Prynne. Feminist literary criticism is defined as the literary analysis that arises from the viewpoint
of feminism, feminist theory, and feminist politics. (Napikoski and Lewis, ThoughtCo.). While
basic feminist literary criticism falls under the categories of identifying with female characters and
reevaluating literature and the world in which literature is read, it can mean determining a literary
work s influence on feminism or vice versa, the influence

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Edward Murrow s Speech
In any type of society, speeches have a great impact on the public audience and their views on
different issues. Especially in a dystopian world, sometimes what the people need is a speech to
give them hope and motivation to encourage them to fight for what they believe in. Living in a
dystopian society in Great Britain, V struggles against the government and delivers a well though
out speechto the general public to address his main concerns. In a similar yet distinct way,
American Journalist Edward Murrow also directs a message through a radio broadcasting of his
opinions on the use of television in society. Both speeches bring revolutionary perspectives to light
and highlight the relevant problem the people are facing in that world.

In his speech to the public audience, V calls upon the people and empathizes with their feelings
towards the government: I know you were afraid. V uses a rhetorical and persuasive approach with
the use of pathos, connecting to the audience s feelings when he acknowledges their fear of
competing against the government. Comparably, Murrow also persuades his own audience by
directly calling upon their efforts to see the importance of knowledge: let us exalt the importance of
ideas and information. Murrow has a confident tone that is utilized to coerce the audience into
thinking that information is something that is crucial to a part of their everyday

The American Dream And Family Life
Most people assume the American dream is about achieving the nostalgic ideal of 1950s family
life Dad in charge of the household, Mom always looking pretty, and their children happily
obedient and affectionate. The belief that success means living in a suburban home with a nuclear
family causes many Americans to disparage any lifestyle that departs from this false image of
family life. In truth, the suburbs are full of dysfunctional families and overdeveloped housing tracts.
Many people in America cannot afford to buy a home, and most families do not fit the fifties era
ideal. Nonetheless, the media and advertisers continue to promote the delusion of the American
dream, and consumers continue to spend their money in hope of achieving it. However,... Show

The difference is often jarring, especially when going to a place which tries to imitate what is
shoveled out of the tube. The deliberate sleekness and marketing savvy of stores nowadays
guarantees you that your shopping experience will be full of noise, flash, and every device
imaginable to get you to part with your money. Malls today are carefully designed to disorient
the shopper and temporarily trap them within their walls. This is true of grocery stores, too
where companies buy shelf space and carefully place items where certain categories of people
will look. Parents get trapped into buying the heavily sugared cereal placed at the precise eye
level of their young consumer target. Noise is prevalent, omnipresent, and deliberate.
Entertainment stores and places that sell music and movies probably have stock in hearing aid
companies, since they play the awful music they peddle at such high volumes. And even
restaurants, the last bastion of civility, run at earsplitting volume. And if you are lucky enough to
find a quiet, intimate place to eat, someone is sure to bring in a child who is not old enough to
appreciate the food or the atmosphere and make its displeasure loudly

The Odyssey, Medea, And Oedipus The King
While our class has been covering different aspects of Greek civilization, I was assigned to read
the literature from that time period. Some examples of the literature I read was The Iliad, The
Odyssey, Medea, and Oedipus The King. These readings show direct relations to the concepts and
ideas that occurred in Greek civilization during this time in history. Some of the recurring themes
throughout these stories are religion, philosophy, and hospitality. Polytheism, fate, and hospitality
towards others are some of the important concepts that were held by the Greeks. The religious views
of the Greek civilization is evident throughout the literature of that time period. The Greeks were
known to have been a Polytheistic people, who believed in multiple gods/goddesses. They
believed these gods constantly interfered with their lives, both in good and bad ways, which is
shown in the literature. Not only do the characters pray or converse with these... Show more content

One important value the Greeks held was hospitality. In The Odyssey, Odysseus travels through
many different places. As he encounters new people, they often welcome him in immediately. In
fact, hospitality was so common that whenever Odysseus encounters the island inhabited by
cyclops, he assumes he is welcome and begins to eat their food and drink. The concept of
hospitality in the literary works connects not only to their civilization in general, but specifically
connects with their religious beliefs. I believe it is possible that the Greeks gave hospitality to
others on behalf of their gods/goddesses rather than just out of kindness. One example of this
would be in the Iliad, where Achilles welcomes in other men such as Odysseus to his hut and
prepares them food. He does this before asking about their intentions. This seems a little weird by
today s standards, as this happened before Achilles had joined their side in

My Background In Public Safety
Case Study My background in public safety is as a Firefighter/EMT for the City of Philadelphia
since April 1997. During that time, I became a Haz Mat technician in 2003, afterword, in 2005, I
qualified as a Technical Recuse Specialist Technician and then spent the next seven years with
Squad 47 namely, a combination technical rescue/Haz Mat unit, that also responds as an engine
company. Currently I am the aide to a deputy chief, who has command of Division One in a
municipality that has two divisions.
One of the problems that needs attention; when working with multi agencies in our city, is the
coordination of the transport of patients in a mass causality incident (MCI), and integrating police
transport into the incident response plans. For example, the derailment of Amtrak passenger train ...

To illustrate the lack of coordination, the injured were disproportionately transported to local
hospitals, over utilizing some hospitals while others were underutilized. This is an undesirable
occurrence in a mass casualty situation, diminishing the care for both the accident victims, and the
current hospital patients. In other words, directing an influx of patients to correspond with hospital
capacity is essential during an MCI. As soon as, an MCI is determined, all hospitals are notified by
the FCC (911 call center). In turn, each hospital reports back on how many patients they can handle,
both trauma and non trauma. As soon as the EMS triage branch supervisor receives this information
he/she can then disperse the various patients to different trauma or non trauma centers, depending

Analysis Of The Novel Asterios Polyp Color
Color is commonly used in various art forms as a way to represent feeling and symbolize a
greater meaning than a written text or black and white shading could. In David Mazzucchelli s
graphic novel Asterios Polyp color is used to express both emotion and time through his use of the
printer primary colors, cyan, magenta and yellow. Because of Mazzuccehlli s use of colorand the
abstract form of his comic panels, his comic is considered an alternative comic. Breaking the
barriers of what readers are familiar with when it comes to the aesthetics of a comic, while at the
same time being able to make it not seem vastly unfamiliar. Asterios Polyp takes the reader to a
whole other world as they are navigated through the mind and memories of Asterios by narration
from his dead twin brother. Similar to Mazzuccehlli, Paul Thomas Anderson incorporates
meaning through color in his film Punch Drunk Love (2002). In this essay I will compare the use
of color in both Asterios Polyp and Punch Drunk Love with regards to its significance in both, and
how form is used to express both emotion and time. With regards to form, I will focus on the
Mazzuccehlli s eccentric panel distribution and the variation of space in between the panels, which
separates it from most comics. Anderson s film alike separates itself from the classic romantic
movie form through both its plotline and cinematography. Had either Mazzuccehlli or Anderson not
incorporated the symbolism of color within their works, I feel

Representation Of Women Research Paper
The ways we see women in our society are still as inferiority gender. We have altered modes of
portraying women s, but the result has been the same for a long time, and digging down all those
aspects that make women inferiority, we may find beauty as a reason not sufficient but necessary,
which explain that. Beauty as an instrument that may account for women s inequality, and its
relation with hierarchies and social roles.
This essay explores some forms what understudy women s subordination, specifically, the idea of
representation of beauty as a social construction like gender. Beauty has been and will be
something that we categorize, as a result, we create social patterns, which change over times, but it
maintains a close link with gender roles and stereotypes. Those dynamics that women must follow.
Instead of trying to understand the modern way of being beautiful, just only in the idea of physical
features, I will show how beauty has different meanings in western culture as way of performance or
acting.
Beauty is something that women want to posses. Beauty has been a subject that has not had a
specific concept, so it depends on the cultural context and the time. In addition, it has a
representation that socially portrays more than a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

times, and how these discourses, which are part of the media agenda, are inside women behavior,

Cacao Influence On Mayan Culture
At first consideration, chocolate and the Maya peoples do not appear to be related in any
manner, but this could not be farther from the truth. Cacao, the tree from which chocolate is
processed, is heavily intertwined in the religious and secular lives of the Maya, in the past as well
as the present. Chocolate, as we know it today, too was born from the Maya and their contact with
the Europeans, perhaps the only good thing to come from the interactions. Thanks to the
Europeans, cacao has impacted the rest of the world in as great a manner as it impacted the Maya.
The Maya were, and are, a group of Mesoamericans whose settlements spanned from Mexico to
Belize, beginning as early as 1500 B.C.E (Maya People). According to a display at the ki
Xocolatil museum, the Maya timeline can be split into six different sections: Ancient Classical
(250 600 C.E.), Recent Classical (600 800 C.E.), Late Classical (800 1000 C.E.), Ancient Post ...

False Memory Psychology
In their paper A picture is worth a thousand lies: using false photographs to create false childhood
memories (2002), researchers Kimberly Wade, Maryanne Garry, Don Read, and Stephen Lindsay
addressed the topic of false memory creation, specifically if doctored or photoshopped images
could be used to create false childhood memories in adults. The goal of this study was to explore
whether or not subjects would accept the false photographs as real, which would lead to the
researchers being able to gather more information about the mechanisms involved in false memory
production.
This study, and many before it, relied on three main conditions that will result in false memory. First
of all, the participants must believe that the suggested memory ... Show more content on

for future research is how the claim that false memory can be induced through pictures holds up
against a more diverse sample of people, including children and elderly people, and those from
different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.. If I were to research this, I would
hypothesize that it would be more difficult to plant false memories in people living in poverty,
and in very young children, because I imagine the amount of salient memories of events would be
smaller. There would be less of the feeling that this is a picture so it must have happened if they
would have never had the opportunity to ride in a hot air balloon, as shown in this

Analysis of Mending Wall by Robert Frost Essay
Analysis of Mending Wall by Robert Frost
Robert Frost is describing a process in Mending Wall , which is repairing a wall that separates his
territory and his neighbor s. The wall was deteriorated during the winter, when the cold frost
created cracks and gaps in the wall. He uses a nearly infantile imagination to unravel the mystery of
the damage that appeared suddenly in spring. While they are tediously laboring to reconstruct the
fence, Frost is imploring his neighbor about the use of the wall; his apple trees can be clearly
distinguished from his neighbor s pine trees. Yet underneath this quotidian routine, Frost goes
beyond the surface to reveal its figurative meaning.
The poem renders an apparent question: Why do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also uses other devices such as a pun, applied in the line, And to whom I was like to give
offence. The last word of the line simply emphasizes the importance of the subject, the fence. The
most prominent figure of speech, however, is the ironic, Good fences make good neighbors. This is
completely opposite of the connotation of the poem. Fences do not make neighbors, but strangers
that are apathetic towards each other. The neighbor seems to prefer this approach, to eliminate any
risks of trespassing or offenses. Yet what the fence really does is hinder the development of
friendship. This is comparable to the barriers of bitterness, anger, hate, and fear men put between
one another that obstruct love and friendship.
The poet also used imagery to appeal to the senses. The puzzling force that abhors the wall sends
the frozen ground swell under it, and spills the upper boulders in the sun.

Hazing Essay
Hazing
Hazing is one of the fastest rising problems in America. Hazing has caused many deaths and
psychological problems to its victims. Hazing humiliates, and degrades individuals. People have
heard of hazing recently due to the deaths of many kids and teenagers. Hazing used to be thought of
as harmless and was considered to be harmless pranks with college students in fraternities. Today,
hazing is experienced by boys/men and girls/women in school groups, university organizations,
athletic teams, the military, and other social and professional organizations.
Hazing has grown to become a major social problem. Recent incidents have been documented in

activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with fraternal law, ritual or policy or the
regulations and policies of the educational institution.
Hazing has often been thought to exist primarily in fraternities and sororities; many people are
starting to realize the pervasiveness of these harmful rituals. In fact, a recent study by Alfred
University and the NCAA found that approximately 80% of college athletes had been subjected to
some form of hazing. This total comes to more than 250,000 athletes during the 1998 99 school
year alone. Half were required to participate in drinking contests or alcohol related initiations while
two thirds were subjected to humiliating hazing. The majority of hazing occurs during the
initiations to club sports and fraternities/sororities.

Analysis Of Unforgiven
Unforgiven is a 1992 Western film which was produced, directed, and starred by Clint
Eastwood. The adventure of William Munny, a vicious murderer in the past who has killed
innocent women and children, started when The Schofield Kid approached Munny in his farm
and asked him if he wanted to help in killing two of the cowboys who slashed one of the
prostitutes just because the woman giggled at one of the cowboy s tiny pecker. However, Little
Bill Daggett, the sheriff, just fined the two cowboys with six horses to be given to the saloon
keeper instead of arresting and beating them up; this nonchalant response of the sheriff outraged
the other prostitutes. The girls pooled all of their savings, which amounted to $1,000, and used
that money as a reward to anybody who would kill the two cowboys who slashed up their friend.
The film was unique because of the way Clint Eastwoodpresented violence and killing in an
interesting way and in a new light wherein the line between good and evil was a little blurred.
The thought provoking title of the film also added a unique touch to this film. The form of
violence in the film was presented in different ways some are subtle, but some are more obvious.
The way that the prostitutes offered bounty for the death of the two cowboys serves as a silent
form of violence and protest, which represents the hatred that they feel because they are belittled
and mistreated by the people just because they are prostitutes: Just because we let them

The Effects Of All Types Of Stimuli On Teenagers Essay
Cassandra Randall

Final Paper
Professor Sloan
Soc 111: Social Research
Psychological and Sociological studies have examined the impact of all types of stimuli on
Teenagers/Youths criminal behavior like Peer pressure, Parental Attitudes (not caring), Dropping
out of School, Drinking, Drugs, and Yes, Violent Video Games. In the Criminal Justice world, the
teenage brain itself has been cited as a reason to end Solitary confinement for Adolescents and
teenagers not to mention the abolition of both life sentences and the death penalty for Juveniles.
What are the Causes and Effects that makes Youths get into such Deviance Behavior?
When a Youth commits a serious crime, the first responses generally fall into three categories:
Call the Police to make an arrest
Complaints that the City Government is not doing enough to protect the public
Questions about what caused the perpetrator to go do wrong
Youth poverty, not youth biology is the most to blame for youth crime. Also their environment.
Within every race and community youths suffer poverty rated two to three times higher than older
adults do. It is astonishing that researchers have complied theories and claims about youths:
Risk Taking
Impulsiveness
Brain Deficiencies
Crime Proneness
Without examining whether these are due to young people s low socioeconomic status, not young
age. Poverty and crime has a very close relationship that has been describe by professionals from all

  • 3. Gilded Age Research Paper Argumentative Essay The ability to have ownership over something, tangible or not, can give a person a sense of value or superiority when comparing themselves to others. Furthermore, as humans, it is easy to desire things as one s own and claim it, but the way something is treated differs from person to person. As a result, the material items and skills a person has ownership over provides a glimpse of his or her s true nature. According to Plato, the ownership of objects can hold a detrimental stake to the character of a person. When applied to a more specific case, such as slavery in America where the concept of owning people as property was a recurring norm in various societies, a vivid description about the white southern males who owned ... Everyday, people are given an opportunity to learn, in school or from their surroundings, and gain experiences that they will own forever. According to Albert Einstein, there is no limit to how much one can learn and that intellectual growth will only cease at death. This determination to strive to improve and extend on one s intellect and skills develops from the ownership of such intangible characteristics that make up a person. Einstein makes a point to never give up ownership of one s own ability to freely learn and express curiosites, and while it seems impossible to have intangible objects taken, history reveals times where it has occurred. The most prominent occurrence would be that of Rosa Parks who, aware of her civil rights, stood her ground and refused to subjugate to the racist acts that attempted to strip her of her identity, humanity, and freedom. Through her inspiring actions, Parks revealed how a woman can have the power to be courageous and that African Americans will no longer be enslaved to corrupt ideals attempting to rob them of ... Square explains his world and what he thinks of ours. To him, our world has space, thus calling it Spaceland, which is something they do not have in Flatland, hints the name Flat land. In effort to explain the difference in the worlds, one would find it confusing and hard to comprehend Abbott s writing, especially for those of us who have only been told and informed about the world of three dimensions. In mentioning of only being informed of one subject, I would like to bring to your attention that there are some things some people are totally oblivious to. In 1614 the Dutch established Fort Orange with the goal of creating a fur trade with the Indians. Very small Fort Orange could be easily seized by French enemies and the Dutch saw that establishing a large settlement would be the best way to protect the fur trade. In 1625 the Dutch created the town of New Amsterdam. This town led to the creation of more agricultural settlements creating New Netherlands. Unlike English and Spanish colonists the Dutch had come for economic purposes with no intention of any missionary effort. This helped relations between the Dutch and Indians and thus helping their trade efforts. The Dutch made great efforts to avoid conflict which sadly ended as a governor requested payment from Algonquian Indians which led to two colonists being murdered creating high tensions between New Netherlands and the Indians. Those who own majority of the company decide to hire mangers to make important decisions on your company. This is a general example on how shareholders run their company. Now wouldn t you rather help make decision, or be able to factor in ideas from the employees and community that has helped the business grow? If so, you might want to consider the stakeholders theory. Different stakeholders can hold varying amounts of influence and interest, within the organization. For example, consider a factory worker. Internal stakeholders are described as the managers and employees of a company. Connected stakeholders are those that are beyond the immediate boundaries of the firm, while external stakeholders are those who are outside the firm. Some would say it is rather difficult to argue the stakeholders theory because there is not as much information on the subject as there is shareholders theory. They would argue that shareholders own most corporations; and presently, corporations owned by stakeholders would be unsuccessful in the long run. There has been some debate on the legitimacy of the concept of the stakeholder, according to Friedman and Miles. The stakeholder concept has not gone unchallenged. Many have reiterated the alternative stakeholder positions. Others have challenged implications of the stakeholder concept for certain groups (Friedman and Miles 118). Friedman and Miles go on to argue how stakeholders can weaken an organization, and even alter its long term characteristics. Assume that the stakeholder concept is infallible and consider the example of the factory worker. The company is publicly owned and is located in a more economically developed country (MEDC), where it will have a weaker influence from the government when compared to government owned companies. • 8. Themes In Lord Byron s When We Two Parted Lord Byron s When We Two Parted details the experiences of a man who has just been heartbroken by someone who he thought would love him forever, but seemingly never loved him. He in that moment realizes that nothing will be the same, as any time he hears the name of his former lover, he will be struck with grief and regret, basking in the shame that he allowed them to hurt him so. Although When We Two Parted can be used as a lens to glimpse inside the mind of someone who has just been heartbroken, it can also serve as a mirror for Lord Byron s life and his change in outlook on ideas such as infinity and the everlastingness of a promise. Lord George Gordon Byron was born on January 22, 1788 in London with a twisted foot. He was primarily raised destitute by his mother, the family fortune having been wasted by his father s gambling affiction. While not officially divorced, his parents lived separately until the death of his father in 1791, as they could not stand living in the same house. His mother enrolled him in the Aberdeen Grammar School in 1798, where he began writing and developed a fascination with politics. In that same year, he inherited the Barony of Byron of Rochdale in addition to the Byron family home in Newstead after the death of his uncle. Unfortunately for Byron, not much money came with the inheritance as well, as his uncle had also squandered the majority of it. The difference between the normal budgeting and prison budgeting for health care makes a logical case in this essay. However, the inscribing of health care issues into the prison environment provides an opportunity to assess how the different settings approach the same issues and a chance to recommend methods of increasing health care awareness and viability in Canadian Prisons. Ethical Issues Conditions of Canadian Prisons Prison health care in Canada is approached from a number of perspectives. There are proposals that more funding should be allocated to ensure that medical equipment in prisons is vamped up to accommodate the demand for health care services (CanLII, 2014). The Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses delineates the ethical standards for nurses across all settings, levels and roles, setting expectations as well as providing guidance (Canadian Nurses Association [CNA], 2008). One of the common ethical concerns that arises for the correctional nurse relates to demonstrating caring in a custody environment. Correctional nurses must find balance in displaying an attitude of care and compassion while recognizing and maintaining safe boundaries. Another area of ethical concern is the nurse s responsibility for ensuring that patients have access to care. The values associated with nursing practice include nurse advocacy, respect for humans and eliminating barriers to care (CNA, 2008). The correctional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ancient civilizations like: China, India, Babylon, and Greece relied upon the apparent motion of these bodies through the sky to record and determine seasons, months, and years. We know little about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras. However, records and artifacts usually uncover that in every culture, people were preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. Stonehenge, built over 4000 years ago in England has no written records, but its alignments show its purposes apparently included the determination of seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar ... In the Renisannce period of Christianity the church officials decided to re examine the ancient records, and actually found some validity in some of the scientific data. Amazingly enough the Christian church decided to implement data from ancient pagan cultures to help create the most widely used calendar to date, the Gregorian calendar. Ancient Greek astronomers made some amazing mathematical and philosophical discovers about our universe. From the Hellenistic Greek observations in approximately 300 B.C.E., to the invention of the first telescope in the seventeenth century, to the launching of today s space probes, one thing is evident: astrological observations are imperative to creating a calendar. Currently, the concept of a year is based on the earth s motion around the sun. The time from one fixed point, such as a solstice or equinox, to the next is called a tropical year; its length is currently 365.242. Our concept of a month is based on the moon s motion around the earth, although this connection has been broken in the calendar commonly used now, the Gregorian calendar. The time for the moon to complete a full cycle of phases is called a synodic month, and its length is currently 29.53 days. Note that these numbers are averages. The actual length of a ... One thing that is important to an individual liberty is freedom, which I value the most today. Freedom give people the opportunity to speak, the right to their own opinion and pursue happiness. Freedom is very important to every human being because it gives you a chance to express yourself and give you an overall quality of life. However, there is certain limitations when it comes to freedom that we all must live with and that is the laws that we all must obey. • 13. Synthetic Proteins And Cellular Components Essay Now with the GFP in the lysate solution with other soluble proteins and cellular components, we need a strong and specific process that targets only the GFP and not the other parts of the mixture. This strong and specific process used is called affinity chromatography, in which one substance can be purified by using its specific interaction with another substance. In this case, GFP has six histidines at its N terminus which can easily bond to Ni2+and this interaction can be used to purify the GFP from the lysate by using a Ni NTA column. This Ni NTA column allows for solutions to follow through except components that can easily bond to the immobilized Ni2+ ion in the column s silica matrix. Before we could use the Ni NTA column, we had to equilibrate it by adding some binding buffer to the column that washes and prepares the column and then centrifuge. After the column is ready for use, the bacterial lysate can be added to the column, with some left for later analysis. The column is then centrifuged in order for the mixture to flow through the matrix and separate those components that can bind to Ni2+ (not necessarily only GFP) and those that simply flowed through. The liquid from the collection tube is collected and transferred into a tube and labeled F for flow through (Figure 1, lane F). At this point the GFP is bound to Ni2+ in the matrix of the Ni NTA column, however it is not alone. Many other proteins and cellular components may have bound to the column as well due ... As my journey in academics started, I faced the challenge and responsibility of being a single parent. Seeking opportunities to learn about economics and finance, I did what came naturally to me, which was study. Eighteen months of doing the unthinkable : working full time, studying full time, and raising a six year old, was the most exhausting and yet the most inspiring time of my life. In fact, they were seen as nothing more than selfless wives and mothers. The seemingly perfect wife then, was characterized by her dutifulness and obedient demeanor. This notion of male supremacy was undoubtedly the predominant basis of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Rendered unable to voice their own opinions, women then turned to pen and paper as a way to communicate their thoughts. From this, arose the following pieces: Kate Chopin s short story The Story of an Hour, Emily Dickinson s poem She rose to His Requirement dropt, Susan Glaspell s play Trifles, and Zora Neale Hurston s novel... The cold presence of her husband has confined Mrs. Wright and created a loneliness that was unbearable, leading her to eventually murder him. While, at the same time, a country whose intervention exists at a minimal level will tend to have a stronger economy and a more rapid rate of development. In support of this belief it can be argued that since bureaucratic agents are not elected officials they are able to implement various policies without fear of any negative consequences such as not winning a reelection. As can be inferred from the concepts of market and government failure; government intervention is not necessarily always a bad thing. In fact, sometimes it can lead to the advancement of a nation. Governments whose bureaucracies act in such a way can also be referenced as developmental states ; which means that although the government is interfering with the economy, the bureaucracy is focusing on the long term interest of the country versus the personal gain of a select few in the short term. After Dee grows up and receives education, it makes her differ from the rest of the family who only stays in the sub urban area and receives less or no education. She is exposed to the values of the new world with civil rights and equality, which Mama has totally no idea of what they are. Dee has greater visibility and zero tolerance for equality. Also, Dee has a sense of autonomy and individuality after receiving education. These are the things that Mama has not got in touch with before. Therefore, it leads to them not understanding the action of each other. For example, Dee wants to use the churn top and quilts as artistic uses and she do not understand why they are backward enough to put them to everyday use . Mama however sees the churn top as a kind of heritage which has been used for generation. It is the most appropriated to use it practically. Their difference in interpretation and ... Perhaps people may believe having color vision is a huge benefit for animals as opposed to having dichromatic or even monochromatic vision. If that would be the case, then why do not all the animals have color vision? A thought to keep in mind is what is the purpose of seeing colorfor animals. We will dive deeper into how color visionmay play a role in the lives of animals and humans. The different groups of animals we will examine are the marine animals, wild Neotropical monkeys, primates, and humans as well. The first area that will be covered will be animals with monochromatic vision. We must know what it means to have monochromatic vision before... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The heterozygote superiority hypothesis is in question because it states that animals that have trichromatic vision have a fitness advantage over those that do not (Fedigan 1). This is referring to animals who have less than three cones of vision. There is a group of wild Neotropical monkeys that have polymorphic vision. This means the group has members that either have dichromatic or trichromatic vision. The thought is the trichromatic members can find fruits or fresh leaves better than those with dichromatic vision because of distinguishable colors of fruit that can be seen with trichromatic vision (Fedigan 1). This idea fits the heterozygote superiority hypothesis. At first the hypothesis seemed correct based on a study that used tamarins because the one with the three cones of vision was able to spot patches of food more easily. The issue that comes into play is that there is no good evidence for wild populations. Work that was done on Capuchins to see who had an advantage on feeding based on the type of vision they had. The result was that neither seemed to have a significant advantage over the other. Because animals are able to use other senses when foraging for food trichromacy may in fact provide little advantage (Bunce 1060). To account for the inconsistent findings, we have to first understand the inner mechanisms of the effects of optimism on cancer survival rate. Salovey (2000) has proposed various potential casual pathways from dispositional optimism to cancersurvival outcomes. One of the potential mediators of optimism and survival outcome might be immune system. In other words, optimism tends to enhance the immune system which in turn enhance cancer survival rate. Indeed, Ah (2007) examines the intimate connections among social support, optimism, and immune response. Ah hypothesized that optimism plays a mediating role for immune response and cancer outcome. 54 cancer patients participated in the study. They completed questionnaires regarding stress level, optimism, and satisfaction social support. Participants blood was assessed to measure the immune system (ex., white blood cell such as natural killer cell. The results showed that only optimism is associated with immune response and cancer prognosis, while perceived satisfaction of social support was not associated immune response. Given that immunology mediate the relationship between optimism and cancer survival rate, it is possible that the inconsistent results of the previous studies might be accounted by mechanisms related to immunology. One possible explanation might be that previous studies looked at different types of cancer, while some type ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sonnet 130 is about Shakespeare s mistress. In this poem, he uses comparisons to describe his mistress as ugly. One comparison that Shakespeare makes is, If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. In this comparison, Shakespeare relates hairs to wires to represent the coarseness of the hair of his mistress. When read by itself, the comparison does not display love. Yet later on in the poem, Shakespeare explains that even though her mistress may be uglier when compared to other women, but she is rare and unique. The fact that Shakespeare considers his love as rare shows that he loves her. Although the comparison itself in Sonnet 130 is negative while the comparison in Sonnet 18 is positive, both poems compare one subject to another to enhance the feeling of the topic of the poem. To continue, Sonnet 130 also has exaggerations to amplify the descriptions of Shakespeare s mistress. For example, when Shakespeare writes, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun, he shows that his mistress eyes are dull in comparison to eyes of other people. He makes the mistress eyes seem even uglier as he uses the sun to represent other people s eyes. Similarly to the comparison, the exaggeration gives his mistress a negative description. The Role Of Hester Prynne In The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter stood out as a revolutionary work of writing when it was first published in 1850, mainly because of Nathaniel Hawthorne s radical main character Hester Prynne. The novel s influence and Hawthorne s legacy can still clearly be seen in its use in schools today, as well as its lasting popularity with readers. As the novel has persisted throughout literary history, its themes, symbolism, and characters have been examined under many different lenses. It is arguable in our present day circumstances that Hester and her role in the novel still represent and uphold the innate feeling of what is known today as feminism. One of the lenses that The Scarlet Letter has fallen under throughout the years is feminist literary criticism. The definition of feminism given today states that it is the advocacy of women s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes, however, this is a broad definition that does not necessarily encompass the feelings of this movement, feelings which can be found in the character of Hester Prynne. Feminist literary criticism is defined as the literary analysis that arises from the viewpoint of feminism, feminist theory, and feminist politics. (Napikoski and Lewis, ThoughtCo.).
