The NBA, the second most watched sport in America, is known for making NBA fans happy if

has had many moments that will go down in sports history, but what if everything was not what it

exactly the concepts studied by the behavior of the actors. Hancock has shown clearly the classical
conditioning when they hear the words asshole for Hancock and crazy for Mary. Using the
conditioned stimulus (CU) and conditioned response (CR) after conditioning the neutral stimulus

7. Denmark Vesey Essay
Denmark Vesey was an African American leader of an attempted slave insurrection in 1822. After
many years as a slave, he won $1,500 in a lottery. Vesey used this money to purchase his freedom.
He used his intelligence, energy, and luck to acquire considerable wealth and influence in South
Carolina. All of these factors helped lead to the largest attempted slave revolt in American history.
David Robertsons book DenmarkVesey outlines his life as a slave, to his freedom, to his execution,
and the consequences of the aftermath.

Whether or not there is very much more information about Denmark Vesey to refer to is debatable.
Denmark Vesey was detailed in certain areas such as antebellum conditions and other generally
known events of the time. It had a considerable lack of detail in the area of the actual plans of
revolt, those involved, and other issues.
Vesey took advantage of his situation after being freed from slavery, and educated himself. His
intelligence and passion for abolishing slavery were the two key elements to his plans for
revolt. The years 1820 1822 was the time period between Vesey s freedom and death. In these
two years, Vesey called assemblies for the slaves and abolitionists, covering the meetings with
church gatherings. Here, he used religious and moral ideals to preach to those opposed to slavery.
Denmark Vesey had a strong sense of idealism, and an aggressive spirit, which he used to
persuade people into the rebellion. He preached a doctrine of a consciousness of and pride in the
cultural and physical aspects of the African heritage. With this, he was able to attract large numbers
of blacks and abolitionists to partake in an enthusiastic undertaking that was difficult and extremely
risky.

meetings, they planned to assassinate the governor and other highly elected

Gibson Walk conducted one of the most interesting studies we learned in class. In 1960, the two
researchers conducted the Visual Cliff experiment. This study used infants and tested their
visual abilities. The researchers tested the depth perception in the infants used in the study.
They put the infants on a glass table that had a shallow side as well as a deep side, and the infant
would crawl on it. I was wondering if the mothers of these infants could have any effect on the
experiment. I wanted to know if the infants were told to crawl over by their mothers from the
shallow side of the table before the deep side of the table. I figured if the mother was on the
shallow end of the table and the infant crawled to her that they would trust the mother more and
crawl over the deep side. It turns out the mothers didn t really effect the experiment. In the
experiment, the mothers actually called them over from the deep end side of the table before they
went over to the shallow side. In 1995, Leichtman and Ceci started their study on challenging

9. Define Bottom Up And Top Down Reading Strategies Essay
1). Define bottom up and top down reading strategies. Be sure to give three examples of each
strategy. Top down is the process of understanding the whole picture. This means that the reader
does not actually read the text word for word, but instead he uses his prior knowledge to fill up the
gaps. The reader experience and his languagecognitive abilities allow him to understand the the
sentence by looking at keywords that would provide him with enough information based on his
prior knowledge to decode the whole sentence. this technique requires some sort of appropriate
proficiency level to be efficient which can be best applied for intermediate and advanced students.
Bottom up is when the reader tries to understand the small details starting by the smallest to the
largest meaningful part of the language starting by letters, clauses, sentences, and then phrases.
After that, the reader will connect these details and apply it to the text. this technique usually used
with beginner learners. Examples for top down: в—ЏPreviewing: asking students about the title or
let them read couples of sentences and then ask them what will happen next. в—ЏVocabulary
mapping: students write all the vocabularies they know about the topic. which can activate their
prior knowledge. в—ЏGroup discussion: students group up to discuss what they have read and
what is their reflections. for example, after finishing a chapter from a story. Example for Bottom
up: в—ЏRead aloud: asking students to read aloud

10. The Impact Of Media On Body Dysmorphic Disorder Essay
Introduction In a generation filled with entertainment and technology, there are many
advertisements that exist. Advertisements, such as clothing advertisements, involve lots of touch
ups on the model, making what the world sees, a fake reality of what human body look like. For
some of the North American population, these advertisements do not affect them; they will look
at the body of the model and not think much of it. But for those who suffer from Body
Dysmorphic Disorder, this will affect them in a completely different way. Body Dysmorphic
Disorder is a body image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with
an imagined or slight defect in one s appearance (ADAA, 2014). The impact that advertisements
can have on those suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disorder, can be crucial to their mental
health. These individuals will begin to obsess over changing something about themselves that
may not even be an imperfection about them. But since a model or someone else looks a certain
way and they do not, they will do anything they can to change it, which can be very unhealthy.
Those with Body Dysmorphic Disorder will perform different behaviours to attempt at hiding or
improving their flaws (ADAA, 2014). Some of those who are suffering may even develop an
eating disorder. Upon reflection, I have decided to go into more research on this topic through the
question of: What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder and how have print and television advertisements

Doctors have maintained credibility for their ability to treat and cure for centuries. By earning the
title of Doctor, it is common for them to be given automatic respect and admiration. However,
William Carlos Williams The Use of Force reveals the phenomenon that unconditional trust may
paradoxically have a negative impact on the doctor patient relationship. His narration contrasts the
characteristics expected in a doctorto that of his own personal feelings and emotions.
The parents of a young girl urgently ask Doctor Williams to check on their daughter, concerned
that she was sick with diphtheria. As the doctor approaches the young girl, he narrates, I smiled in

the beginning, the doctor narrator showed characteristics of wanting to help and represented
himself as trustworthy to the young girl in order to gain her cooperation. His thoughts suggested

18. The Superstitious And Mythical Figure Of The Vampire
The superstitious and mythical figure of the vampire has been seen throughout all era s off
history. It is a figure of mythology that is transcendent in an abundance of cultures and regions.
The most significant aspect of the vampire is its ability to redefine itself throughout history and
continued to stay relevant to society. The most modern and commonly known definition of
vampires is a preternatural being know to be a corpse that resurrects from the dead and lives of
the living, by draining humans of their blood, until a it is impaled by a wooden stick or burned. In
ancient history we see the myth of the vampireappearing in burial traditions, showing vast
similarities to the modern day definition of the vampire. We see this appear in various cultures and
regions like the Tibetans, ancient Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome (Wotherspoon, 6 8).
In The Tibetan Book of the Dead, it is explained by Lama Kazi Dawa that, they believe if a spirit
sees its corpse, it will try to reclaim its body resulting in vampirism. For this reason, it was
common for Tibetans to opt out of an earth burial and chose a fire burial or in modern terms
cremation (Dawa Samdup, 26). In ancient Babylonia, a tablet was found with an inscription that
explains their burial traditions. In this inscription, it states the Babylonians belief that if specific
burial traditions where not followed an evil force will come from their grave (Summers, 220). This
belief could very well be a parallel to the

early American life as a place for great opportunities to start over, live easily, and to turn small

In William Bradford s Of Plymouth Plantation he articulates that living in young America was a

example of him describing the new world as dangerous is when he painted the picture of a wicked

In 2016 alone, there were over 200,000 arrests made involving white collar crimes (UCR, 2016).
Although white collar crime makes up less than 1% of all arrests made, it can cost its victims
upwards of trillions of dollars in fiscal damages each year (ACFE, 2014). Despite its detrimental
cost to its victims, very few theories are capable of explaining why white collar crimetakes place.
General strain theory is one of the few theories capable of explaining the phenomenon of white
collar crime, naming the presence of negative stimuli and goal blockage, among other factors, as
central causes of criminality, despite the background or demographic of the offender. In The Wolf
of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort grew up in a middle class family, and turned... Show more content on

Rothschild for six months, Jordan received a promotion to a position as a stockbroker, and was
promptly laid off the same day due to the Black Monday crash. This situation in particular,
placed an enormous amount of strain on Jordan as a positive stimulus was removed, via the loss
of his job, and a negative stimulus was added, via pressure to provide for himself and his wife.
These were added to the strain already being placed on Jordan through the disjuncture of his
expectations and reality. In addition to the clustering of these negative events, losing a job was of
high magnitude to Jordan as he viewed his position as a stockbroker as essential to the removal
of another strain in his life, the gap between his desired wealth and his actual lower middle class
lifestyle. Although Jordan was able to obtain a job as a stockbroker in a relatively short time, the
effect of his recent unemployment impacted his decision to use illegal selling tactics when he
returned to work. The combination of these factors led to feelings of disappointment, frustration
and fear within Jordan, ultimately leading him to the use of illegal pump and dump selling
techniques, in which a stockbroker provides a client with false insider information in order to
intentionally drive up the value of an often, worthless stock, and convince the client to invest

24. Jack the Egomaniac in William Golding s Lord of the Flies
Having an individual take control over a group is inevitable. Adolf Hitler took over Germany; at
first he was appointed as chancellor but the Germans let him get away with taking over as
dictator (Truemen , 2013). It was out of fear that the Germans let him be in power. In Lord of the
Flies, William Golding utilizes Jack as the most important character in the novel because of how
his psychological personality affects the plot. Jack, much like Hitler, gains control by instilling
fear into the others and takes over as leader. Throughout the whole book Golding continues to use
Jack to twist the story. He stands in the way of the other boys success in getting off of the island.

Jack tries hard to turn everyone against Ralph by saying Hands up [...] whoever wants Ralph not
to be chief? (118). Jack pushes boundaries throughout the whole book because he was not elected
to be chief. He continuously tries to cast the group away from Ralph and begins to embrace
savagery and violence. Once again Jack displays himself as the id when he is trying to lure the
others away from Ralph so he can egotistically become in control of the group to get what he
wants. Jack picks on Piggy throughout the whole novel making Piggy seem inferior to
everyone; when Jack compares Ralph to Piggy, he is demoralizing him in front of the group and
creating the illusion that he is weak. [Ralph is] like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn t a
proper chief. (50). From the time Jack met Piggy; he made him look foolish to the group, even
the littleuns disrespected him. Now that Jack compares Ralph to Piggy, he convinces the others
that he is better fit as a leader than Ralph. Jack uses his hunting skills as a bribe to wean the
others away from Ralph to his own tribe. I gave you food [...] and my hunters will protect you
from the beast. Who will join my tribe? (139). He tricks the other boys into thinking that he is
going to be a better chief but they only go to his tribe because they are mortified of the beast. Jack
uses their fear of the beast to control them. He makes his tribe sound so wonderful. Food and

The modern day toilet has been an innovation that has cleaned up the world s sanitary problems
since the late 1800s when it was created. Imagine what life would be like without the use of the
toilet? Think about an average person in the American society lasting a lifetime without one? Well
luckily thanks to the invention of the toilet, most people in the world do not have to worry about
living in unsanitary conditions without one. The invention of the toilet has helped change the
ways of the early primitive ways of disposal by preventing major catastrophes in the world, it has

importance because it made the modern day toilet possible. Kay Keating points out that Thomas
Crapper also held nine patents towards the formation of the modern toilet (Keating 1). Many parts
and pieces have been attributed to the invention of the toilet along with many types of decorations
that have been added to the toilet throughout its time of being created as works of art. Writers from
Inventhelp.com state that Sir John Harrington invented a facility (toilet) that had a seat, a bowl,
and a cistern (Inventhelp.com 1). This shows an importance of early contributors striving to create
a toilet. Inventhelp.com also writes that Sir John Harrington invented a very primitive version of
the water closet which was water stored in a compartment used for washing away
contaminants(Inventhelp.com 1). During the time of Sir John Harrington and a short while before
Thomas Crapper, the toilet was somewhat more of an art for decorating rather than a sanitary
device since it was so expensive at the time(Yadav 1). Decorations of the toilet show that the device

would limit the ability for criminals to get their hand on a gun and cause more trouble than they

World War I was one of the most drastic events in American history. It had an unequaled
contribution to shaping modern day American culture. WWI and American Art successfully
documents a fragile moment in American History from the Perspective of the visual artist. The
curators achieve this by communicating some important historical facts. This review intends to
expound on how these works exemplify these facts and to provide a criticism of its effectiveness.
The exhibition is organized systematically and chronologically, as well as sequentially. Each
segment has a title, supplemented by a detailed description which gives context to the content. This
makes for easy transitioning through the various sections of the show. To the curator s credit, the
audience will find these descriptions extremely useful. Without them as a guide it would be
difficult to keep track of the sequence in which the objects are organized. The personal accounts of
the artist s experience of the war are also useful. They add a context to the circumstances
surrounding the artist during that time. Such a device strengthens the viewer s understanding of the
object being displayed. Through this exhibition, the curators have managed to expertly
communicate a few historical truths. Firstly, that American artists responded to war in creative
ways; exemplified by the variety of works on display. Secondly, American artists had a position on
the War. They were actual vocal members of society who

Social Security Social Security was introduced into law by Democratic President Franklin D.
Roosevelt. Social Security was a program which would provide financial protection to our most
elderly of citizens. The program over the course of time has evolved and added new branches of
protection such as child, survivor, and dependent benefits. Social Securitywas never created to be an
answer for a comprehensive retirementpackage for people retiring. However in our current society
with plastic cards and increasing debit to income limits, many people do not save for the future.
Many citizens live for today and expect the government to take care of them when they are old
and cannot fend for themselves. In 2011 the first wave of baby boomers began reaching
retirement age and in turn qualifies them to begin drawing from the Social Security System. The
baby boom generation makes up 25 percent of the total United States population (SSA, 2014).
The projected number of people from 2011 to 2030 who will become eligible to receive Old Age
benefits from the Social Security Act will increase by 65 percent (SSA, 2014). This data is
crucial in terms of determining the stability of a system that relies on the paying masses to care
for the elderly few. Many Presidents in the last two decades have created and formed elaborate
panels of specialized individuals to tackle the problem of the long term sustainability of the Social
Security System. In order to take care of our most elderly

Instead of these managers looking out for their workers, they try to hide the injuries, and will

feel the need to hide minor injuries because a supervisor must meet production goals, keep the
number of recorded injuries low, and most importantly, keep the meat flowing down the line
without interruption (Schlosser 175). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) is responsible for inspecting meatpacking plants and making sure they are operating and
functioning properly. The old OSHA policy was that, there were 1,300 inspectors and over 5
million workplaces to be looked at. The employers would expect an inspection about every 80

higher than the national average. There is a slim chance of that happening because the records are

Schlosser brings up an interesting statement about OSHA s policy when he says they did indeed

number of people getting hurt. It merely encouraged companies, in the words of a subsequent
congressional investigation, to understate

together to produce an offspring with desired traits. In other words, the process in which humans

which can grow bigger, or maybe an animal which can be stronger. Selective Breeding is all about
the inheritance of genes and alleles. Scientists may breedindividuals to their desired traits, whilst

With dogs, selective breeding is of benefit so we can breed out diseases and breed dogs for
different purposes. Selective breeding in general means we can breed cows which can produce
more milk or chickens which can lay more eggs, because with a growing population we do need
more food, this is another reason as to way selective breeding is ethical in general as it is one of the
buggiest advantages. Selective breeding could be considered in ethical when used to cross breed
dogs just for a cuter appearance, whereas cross breeding dogs to make it stronger and faster is
ethical and more beneficial for dogs. This has a positive impact on society as dogs and in general
selective breeding has many benefits on people.
In conclusion, selective breeding does have its general advantages of eliminating diseases,

41. Analyzing Bonaventure s Essay
Finally, insofar as he is the life, Christ is the source of the contemplative cognition, the final stage
of the cognitive process. Once again, he grounds his exposition on Biblical sources, first focusing
on John 10:9. In this passage, we find the apostle writing that I am the gate. Whoever enters by me
will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture . In connection to the present theme,
Bonaventure argues on the ground of this passage that the soul contemplates [...] in two ways,
according to two kinds of nourishment: internally in divinity and externally in humanity.
Accordingly, there are two modes of contemplating, going in and going out, which one can attain
only through Christ . More specifically, on the one hand Bonaventure writes that we go into Christ
inasmuch as he is the uncreated Word [...] . As such, Christ represents the gateway to the

we reach the stability and fullness of truth by contemplating Christ as the uncreated or as the

contemplation, be it on the inside or on the outside, what we meet and contemplate is in both cases
the eternal Word or, Christ according to his being eternal , once being incarnated in human form,
and once as we encounter it in our soul. This, is done with an act of direct appraisal, whereas in

When you go to an art show do you understand the symbolic interpretation of the pieces? Don t feel
bad, most people don t. What s so upsetting about that is that you really miss out on the experience.
When I think about interpretation of art I think of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol s use of iconography
changed not only the art world but the people who came into contact with his art. Once you
understand his life and art, you will understand his art as a symbolic representation. Andy Warhol
(Andrew Warhola) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 6, 1928. His parents were Julia

His early paintings had an unconventional, unique, and unfinished look about them. The images
were known to everyone in everyday life. I was looking at a bunch of Warhol s paintings and I
was confused. I was just staring at them and I m thinking why don t you look like a Warhol?
Then I realize that these paintings are from when he was younger. This was before he defined
his aesthetic. I believe this was his discovering phase then he goes into his silk screening phase.
Andy Warhol used current icons from the world for his work. One of the famous icons was the
Campbell s soup can. In 1962 Warhol displayed his Campbell s soup piece, one canvas for each
32 types of Campbell s soup. In 1960, Warhol began producing his first canvases, which he based
on comic strip subjects. In 1961, he started using the method of silk screening. Silk screening
starts with a stencil drawing then transferred with glue onto silk. Warhol s first silkscreen was
Campbell s Soup cans. Campbell s Soup was an icon in the 1960s that gave you a sense of
comfort. In spite of that, Warhol s Soup Can paintings were to provoke concern about value. At
first glance it may seem like a joke but it s actually a sophisticated and thought provoking artistic
statement. In the 1960s Andy Warhol made a sculpture that was extension of what Warhol had

Without land and control of their assets, Indigenous Peoples are destined to remain the world s

indigenous peoples, thus being responsible for the high suicide rates. Statistical evidence for Latin

44. The Essential Elements Of Plants
There are 17 essential elements that plants need to grow and reproduce. These required nutrients
are often placed in four categories. The first group are the carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen
(O) that plants obtain primarily from water and air. The remaining three categories contain the 14
essential nutrients generally taken up by plant roots from soil(Table 1). The primary macronutrients
are nitrogen(N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). These three elements are required in large
amounts by the plant and are the most commonly applied nutrients in most fertilizers. The
secondary macronutrients, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) are usually required in
slightly lower amounts than primary macronutrients. Applications of these nutrients may be needed
but are generally less frequently required than the primary macronutrients.
The fourth and final category of plant nutrients are the micronutrients. Although just as essential for
proper plant growth and reproduction, micronutrients are needed in much smaller quantities. In
many soils, micronutrients are present in sufficient amounts for plant growth. Micronutrient excess,
called toxicity, can also be problematic. Care must be taken to not oversupply micronutrients
through fertilization or pH management. Soil tests are the best way to be certain that micronutrient
levels are adequate but not too high.

45. Essay On Mike Trout
Mike Trout, Mike Trout is the best current player in the MLB right now. He is a dominate hitter,
fielder and a great teammate. Mike Trout is a 6 2, 235lb player from Vineland New Jersey. He is
in the top five in the league for all statistics except for strikeouts, not including the players that
had one ten at bats because then they can have crazy stats. Some categories he is number 1 is he
scored the most runs and walks. Mike Trout is the best player in the MLB. Mike trout has a better
than .300 batting average. This is a main key to becoming a great baseballplayer. One thing good
baseball players have is constancy; you need consistency to keep a better than .300 batting
average. Mike Trout has a very similar batting average to the great Barry Bonds, Barry Bonds
batted just under .300 and Mike Trout bats .306, Barry bonds is considered to be one of the
greatest hitters of all time. This shows that Mike Trout can be compared to many players in the hall
of fame, such as Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Pete Rose and many more. Jackie
Robinson, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb had better batting averages then him but not by much, though he
has a better batting average than Pete Rose. Jackie Robinson batted .311, Babe Ruth batted around
the mid .300 s, and Ty cobb batted way up in the .300,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

good batting statistics and be a good fielder. Mike Trout has both of those making him a start
player winning MVPs. Mike Trout won two straight all star game MVPs, an all star game is the
best players from each division play against each other. Their for he is playing ageist and with the
best players in the MLB so to win an MVP once is impressive but twice is insane. Mie trout also

A few years ago I decide to go watch T.V. as I normally do in the morning. That s when I saw that
another set of innocent lives have been taken from not wearing seatbelts. What really got my
attention was those innocent lives were from Union, Missouri and I knew two out of the five of
them, three out of the five died. Their names were Jim Curran, Isaac Clark, Lucas Shulze, Cole
Weddle, and Derek King. I knew Isaac and Jim; Isaac had his seatbelt on and survived but was in
critical condition but Jim did not make it, he suffered serious injuries in the wreck and did not
have his seatbelt on. This made me realize that it s a problem everywhere with people not wearing

From 2008 to 2012, 1,609 children ages eight to 14 died while traveling in passenger vehicles. A
full 80 percent of them were unrestrained at the time of their death. This is happening anywhere
people have cars even in Union itself. In the past few years there has been a few teenagers who
have died from not wearing their seatbelt and they had all attended Union High School. Today,
seatbelts are an accepted part of routine vehicle operation for millions of drivers and passengers.
But the modern three point automotive seatbelt has only been around since 1959 and it s saved
thousands of lives since it s introduction.(seatbelts and car safety) Initially people may find seatbelts
uncomfortable, confining or inconvenient simply because they re not used to wearing them. Those
people who have made buckling up a habit can testify that once their use does become a habit, there
is no discomfort or inconvenience. It can t be overemphasized that the seriou discomfort and

Tiberius began to take firm steps against foreign beliefs because he thought they were a threat to
traditional Roman values. He expelled followers of the Egyptian and Jewish religions from Rome
and banished astrologers. Tiberius believed in astrology himself but probably feared a possible
conspiracy inspired by horoscopes.
Tiberius established a central camp for the Praetorian guard in Rome so the military could be
quickly called to put down civilian violence. Civilian riots were common because of the large
population of unemployed that were provided for by the public dole. Lucius Aelius Sejanus was
in charge of these troops and that gave him an enormous amount of potential power. He aspired to
marry Livia Julia, Tiberius daughter, and worked to increase the emperor s fear and distrust of
other members of his Tiberius family. In AD 26 Tiberius left
Rome and withdrew to Campania, and the following year went to the island of
Capri. Tiberius left Rome under the power of Sejanus. Finally realizing that
Sejanus was trying to seize the imperial power he sent a carefully worded letter to the senate. The
senate read the letter while the unsuspecting Sejanus sat in the senate chamber. Tiberius bitterly
condemned Sejanus. Quick action was then taken to execute Sejanus and his family. Incidents such
as this one gave
Tiberius a bad name with the people of Rome and the senate. Tiberius continued to rule Rome and

inflict pain on Caliban if he does not do as Prospero says and so agrees. Ariel enters playing

52. The Age Of Faith In The Middle Ages
The Middle Ages came right after the fall of the Roman Empire because of its lack of centralized
religion and its inability to deal with the raids of the nomadic and germanic tribes. Compared to all
the revolutionary advancements of the Roman Empire, many considered the Middle Ages to be a
big step back in lifestyle, education and technological advancements. The The Middle Ageshave
been defined as many things. It has been called the Age of Feudalism, The Golden Age, and the
Dark Ages. However, the Age of Faith is a more accurate title, because during the Middle Ages the
church was the main source of unity in Europe, the church was viewed as the most important and
powerful part of Europe, even more powerful than the kings and governments, and finally the Age
is Faith is a more accurate title because people followed the church no matter what, even through
situations as extreme as the Crusades.
The first reason The Age of Faith is the most accurate title is that during the Middle Ages the
church was the main source of unity in Europe. For example the chart of a manor during the
Middle Ages shows that a chapel was the only thing that every single manor had (Document 2). A
chapel was the one thing that connected every manor. Also according to the excerpt from the
museum The Roman Catholic Church was the single most unifying structure in Europe. It touched
everyone s life, no matter what their rank or class was or where they lived (Document 3). This

The star system was a method of developing and advancing the popularity of Hollywood movie
stars. The system, which began during the height of the Hollywood studio system era, emphasized
the image of the actor instead on the actual acting. The movie studio s profits were driven by the
popularity of the stars that appeared in their films. According to Rocco, the stars had long term
contracts with the movie studios that paid them a weekly salary, and the stars were identified with
specific types of characters that would often be repeated in many movies. Belton stated that the star

Over time, there were several changes in Hollywood that led to the end of the studio system, but the
star system remained one of the most important aspects of the film industry. The creation of movie
magazines made the actors and actresses more assessable to fans. Belton stated that the power
of today s stars is driven by the amount of focus that is put on them by entertainment journalist
and television shows (90). Entertainment magazines line the shelves of grocery stores and

Agriculture in the Himalayas of Nepal
According to some estimates, as much as 90% of Nepal s population relies on agriculture for its
sustenance.[1] The significant climactic variations between Nepal s sub tropical Terai region, hills
region, and Himalayan mountain region lead to a variety of different agricultural models. Within
the northern Himalayan region, additional variations in agricultural style exist because of changes
in the qualities of available soil and quantities of moisture at different altitudes. Some researchers

As they rely heavily on their crops to sustain themselves, they tend to remain in areas where
agriculture can continue throughout the year.
In midland mountainous regions from 2,500 to 3,200 meters above sea level, sub Tibetan
groups (or groups of Tibetan ethnicity and culture) grow one crop of wheat or barley per winter
and one crop of buckwheat during the summer. The climate in this region is cool and dry, and the
dry field agriculture used requires less labor than rice cultivation. This allows them to raise cattle,
water buffalo and goats to supplement their diet.[4]At even higher altitudes, where low levels of
moisture permit only a single crop of wheat or barley, yak, which are well suited for high altitudes,
become a major component of the lifestyle.[5] In the northern areas of Nepal, Tibetan pastoralists
travel to altitudes reaching up to 5,200 meters as they seek out pasture for their animals during the
summer monsoon season, although few permanent habitations can be found above 4,000 meters.
Where possible, these groups make up for shortages in grain and other goods by trading wool,
butter, meat, and draught animals. They may also hunt, fish, and forage for wild plants, although
habitat destruction from deforestation has caused a decline in the availability of game and fish
resources in much of Nepal, making it increasingly difficult to rely on these assets for food.[6]

How did World War II affect American Society? Kirsty Gourlay
On December 7th, 1941, Japanese fighter planes staged an attack on U.S naval and military forces

3,435 casualties including 2,000 deaths. The shattering defeat cost the U.S, 8 battle ships and

Companies that were going bankrupt months before were now literally begging for labourers
and some even suffered from a shortage of workers. This was mainly due to the rapid production
levels the country needed to produce military equipment including ammunition and vehicles etc.
A short time after the U.S. declaration of war, the unemployment rate dropped a massive ten per
cent from its previous amount. After taxes, business profits almost doubled and industrial output
increased massively at 96 per cent. Government expenditure also sored dramatically to 53 per
cent of GDP at its peak in 1945, in comparison to around 20 per cent of GDP previous to the war.
This contributed to business recovery and gave companies the kick start they needed. Due to
productivity doubling, consumer goods also expanded. The war consumed one third of industrial
output and this ensured a constant supply of goods, the U.S being the only country with a
significant rise in supply despite rationing. Wages also rose 50 per cent higher by 1944, this was a
combination of over time pay and wage increases etc.
Men were drafted out to fight in the war in large numbers which contributed to unemployment
figures creating jobs for others. Those that previously were skilled, high paid labourers and worked
in industries such as welding etc. were forced to sign up to the military.
