Understanding Change Management Models With The End Goal
We live in a world that is full of change and our organization is no different. With the upcoming
move ahead of us to Arizona in the next 12 months we must start preparing. Our company has
2500 employees. We must be aware that some will lose their jobs, some will retire and some will
move with the company. I will compare and contrast nine change models with the end goal to select
one that best fits this organizational move. The most appropriate model will then be broken down
by each step to show how it will be utilized within our company for this move. In order to be
successful, we must understand to manage the correct strategy for our organization. Understanding
change managementmodels can help managers evaluate, design, and deploy an approach to changes
in organizations. It is important to do this because of the human nature for people to resist change.
Even the simplest of things can cause employees to react strongly. Organizations must change in
order to remain successful and competitive. With that being said lets get started.
These are a list of the nine models that I will compare for our organizational change. The Lewin,
three step model, Bullock and Batten, planned change, Kotter, eight steps, Beckhard and Harris,
change formula, Nadler and Tushman, congruence model, William Bridges, managing the
transition, Carnall, change management model, Senge, systemic model, and the Stacey and Shaw,
complex responsive processes. Along with discussing the models, I will

Naturalistic Observations Of Naturalistic Observation
What is naturalistic observation? How does a researcher collect data when conducting naturalistic
observation research?
Naturalistic observation gathers data to provide a complete and accurate picture of what occurs
in a setting, (Cozby Bates, 2014, P. 119). The observation describes qualitatively events such as
how people make decisions and how they solve problems using the skills individually and
sometimes as a group think (Cozby Bates, 2014). Naturalistic observations take place in a
normative setting such as sports event, work cycle, and observes behaviors in general or in a
particular setting. The observation supports information on previously acquired skill such as natural
tendencies such as smiling or laughing, enthusiasm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2016, P.59). Observational study in a naturalistic setting allows the participants to feel comfortable
expressing how they think and feel about difficult topics and discussions. Those observations
become the story of that which is studied. Grounded theory, according to Trochim et al. (2006)
creates a setting where the researcher develops theories and questions and then uses the qualitative
data to expand the theory and questions with links of understanding (P. 62). Those links of
understanding help provide a better how and why of research.
Distinguish between participant and nonparticipant observation; between concealed and
unconcealed observation.
Cresswell (2009) elaborates on the different roles of the researcher in observation (P. 182). The
roles of an observer include conducting observation as a participant or just an observer, or
unconcealed. The roles of observer can also include spending time as a participant and then
becoming an observer or spending more time as an observer or participant and then filling the
opposing role (observer or participant). Another role option for the observer is to observe from the
outside and move into the setting, not as a participant but rather situated in the setting. Depending
on the frame of the information gathered any of these situations are acceptable as the data
gathering or researcher doesn t become intrusive or exclusive in whom they observe to prove a
point.

Stonewall Jackson During The American Civil War
On January 21, 1824 around midnight in Clarksburg, Virginia, now West Virginia, one of the South
s greatest Generals during the American Civil War was born. This was Thomas Johnathan Jackson,
also known as Stonewall Jackson. He was the third born out of four siblings. His parents were Julia
Beckwith Neale and Johnathan Jackson (Stonewall Jackson). Jackson s childhood was very rough.
When he was two, his father and older sister died of typhoid fever within the same year. The
death of his father caused his mother to be widowed and left with little money and many debts. To
support her, now three, children, she sewed and taught. Not only that, in order for her to fix the

Siege of Veracruz and the campaign against Mexico City (T.J. Stonewall Jackson). While fighting,
he earned two Brevet promotions and a permanent tittle of First Lieutenant. He also was a part of
the assault of Chapultepec Castle. There, he again proved himself and was ranked up to Major
(American Civil War: Lieutenant General Thomas Stonewall Jackson). Jackson then returned to
the United States post war and accepted a teaching job at Virginia Military Institute in
Lexington. He was a Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and also an Instructor of
Artillery. Although, his students were not fond of him. In the time of him teaching, he married
twice. His first wife was the daughter of Presbyterian Minister, Dr. George Junkin, Elinor Junkin
(Stonewall Jackson). Like Jackson s mother, Elinor died of childbirth on October 22, 1854 of a
stillborn son (Elinor Junkin). July 1857, after a tour of Europe, he remarried Mary Anna
Morrison. Approximately two years later, they had a daughter. Unfortunately, less than a month
later, the baby died (T.J. Stonewall Jackson). In November, Jackson got back into military life.

Essay Title: Outline the developments in mobile phone technology over the last 20 years and
discuss whether the effects are positive or negative. In this world of science and technology,
society has made much progress in the last 20 years. The mobile phone is a good example of this
change. Mobile phones are now the most widespread communication device replacing fixed line
phones, and their number is increasing dramatically every year. This essay will outline the major
changes in mobile phone design and network availability during the last two decades and the
advantages of this development. In addition, this essay will discuss the disadvantages of using

Also, some teenagers use mobile phones to play games and to listen to music all the time and
do not pay attention to their studies. Such cheap and useless activities could be seen as a waste
of time and money. In this way, useful technology becomes the worst enemy of young people
and becomes a hindrance in their progress in this world of competition. In conclusion, the world
has changed greatly in the past 20 years and mobile phones are a symbol of this change. Whether
their development is positive or negative depends on how they are used. Of course, if individuals
choose to use them to improve and develop themselves, then they are a benefit. However, if they
are used only for gossip and games then they are not a benefit. Modern technology has provided a
brilliant tool to improve our lives but it all depends on the user and how he or she wants to use it.

Abstract Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) play main role in the design and development of
the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) who improves the road safety and transportation
productivity. VANETs include two communication types i.e. Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle
to Roadside (V2R) communications. One of the most important challenges of this kind of network
are the timely, safely and reliable dissemination of messages between vehicular nodes which
permits the drivers to take appropriate decisions to improve the road safety. There are many routing
protocols for VANETs which can support the reliability and safety for routing. These protocols
undergo the several limitations including complexity, lack of scalability, end to end delay, routing
overheads, etc. To remove these limitations, various bio inspired methodologies have been
proposed for routing among vehicular nodes in an optimized way. Here in this paper, various bio
inspired routing algorithms for the VANET are discussed.

Maya Angelou Caged Bird
We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others. Will
Rogers. There is always a constant battle whether it s within yourself or with others, to be
something you re not. In the poem, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou, there are many things that the
poem portrays such as freedom, equality, self rage, and the ways of society. The poem
illustrates a bird that is in a cage, and longs to be free. The bird is angry, but cannot do anything
but watch and lone for what he cannot have. The caged bird, stalks the free bird from his cage
and imagines the beauty of being that bird. While the other bird, who is a free, sees the caged bird
and the rage within him, but does nothing. He just watches as the caged bird does the only thing he
can do, which is sing. In the poem, Maya Angeloudescribes the bird to be held by chains, wings

discriminated against by the same kids, which hurt Maya because this was the main person who
she looked up to, longed for, and wanted to be someday. As they said in Role Playing as Art in

Wal Mart s Mission Statement
Wal Mart s mission Statement:
We save people money so they can live better Proposed New mission Statement:
We save people money by delivering value and quality, continuous innovation and exceptional guest
experiences both in store and on line so they can live better.
Wal Mart s position from the competitive forces model competition among rivals is fairly weak.
The market is crowded but Wal Mart has the lowest costs, prices, profits, and market share. Wal
Mart exerts a great deal of effort in making sure they are innovative and meeting customer
requests. The bargaining power of suppliers is weak as well. For most producers, Wal Mart
would be their largest account. The bargaining power of buyers is also weak. There is a very
broad base of customers and a meaningful demand for low prices. The threat of new entrants is
weak. Wal Mart has a scale of operation that is very important, it would take years, maybe even
decades, for a new company to be on the same level. Even prominent companies today would have
really difficult time matching the costs and prices Wal Mart provides.
Walmart s competitive advantages from a value chain perspective. First of all it is a distribution
capability: well organized distribution, leadership of Walmart s own distribution centers and inside
out location strategy. Second, is partnership relationship with merchants: integrates suppliers via IT
treats them well in terms of pricing, they are more business partners than value takers . Third, is

Dollar General Financial Analysis Essay
This analysis contains references to years 2010 and 2009 for Dollar General Corporation, which
represent fiscal years ended January 28, 2011 and January 29, 2010 respectively. The main issues
which the company is concerned about are its ability to increase sales and profitability and reduce
costs in the current economic situation; another issue is an ability to repay an extensive amount of
long term debt which increases its risks. Analysis of profitability The rate of return on assets for
Dollar General for 2010 was 6.8% thus for each dollar the company used it earned $0.068. For
2009 ROA was 3.8%, so ROA increased between 2009 and 2010 fiscal years. Profit Margin for

It decreased by 20 percent over a year which means that the company successfully paid a part of
its long term loans. Cash flow from operations to total liabilities ratio for 2010 is 15.1% and for
2009 is 11.7%. Financially healthy company has cash flow from operations to total liabilities
ratio of 20% or more. Dollar General has a high long term liquidity risk. Interest coverage Ratio
for 2010 is 3.6 and for 2009 is 1.6. A high fluctuation makes the company risky, although it
exceeded a 3.0 benchmark in 2010 it should show this stability over time. In conclusion, financial
statements of Dollar General present the increase in company s profitability and sales over the
last two years, they reduced their expenses as well. The only information that the statements do
not disclose is which brands of merchandise increased their sales, and what was the cost of goods
sold compared to the profit they made. Since the company was concerned about promotion of
their private brand it would be helpful to know what percent of sales does their private brand
make comparison to other brands. Nevertheless, the long term liquidity risk does not look as safe.
The company will have to show the stability in its ratios overtime to insure investors that it has
low risk and is able to repay its debt in a long run as well as maintain stable

Min Wage Essay
Should Minimum wage be increased?
Introduction
For many decades now, there has been heated debates concerning minimum wages and increases in
those wages. Most people have a tendency to assume that when the minimum wage is increased
people will benefit. They do not stop to think of the consequences that come from minimum wage
increases. The general population merely assumes that people should make an adequate amount of
income and never stop to consider the consequences, nor do they stop to consider alternatives. A
rise in minimum wages is not necessarily the best approach to helping the poverty stricken
individuals in this country. The following paper presents an overview of various problems
concerning raising minimum wage, finding that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Poor
The primary reason most people give for wanting to increase the minimum wage is that of helping
poor people. There are many studies that indicate the benefits are just as numerous as the damage
done. According to James Kaz, the majority of those who are paid minimum wage are not poor
but rather one of at least one other income providers in a household. Most people working for
minimum wage are teenagers...and those used to simply go work for almost nothing for some
company or individual in the field they wanted their career . (Kaz02.html)
It appears that the poor are done much more damage than good through minimum wage increases.
Neumark et al. (1999) provide the following background in that regard:
The lower employment occurs mainly because the increase in the cost of low skilled labor,
relative to the cost of using other productive inputs (such as machinery or more skilled workers),
leads employers away from using low skilled labor and toward these other inputs. This substitution
effect is reinforced by the higher overall cost of production associated with the legislated increase
in the wage for low skilled workers, which in turn raises the price of the product and results in less
output sold. (NA)
In addition, there are numerous workers who are adversely affected by a minimum wage change in
the fact that they do not receive the full amount of the legislated increase. This is what happens to,
say, an individual who

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Diversity Plan Analysis At present, the diverse composition of
the United States Veteranpopulation is disproportionate to that of the total United States populace
composition. To be sure, in an examination of one aspect of diversity (race and ethnicity), the
contrasting data is compelling. According to the Pew Research Center (PRC), the percentage of
racially diverse population in the United States is 36% and is on an upward trajectory. In fact,
by the year 2065, our U.S. population will no longer have a dominant racial or ethnic group

(NCVAS), the current percentage of racially diverse veterans is approximately 20% and will
eventually reach 36%, though not until after 2040 (2010). As such, if proactive measures are not
immediately put into action to address this latency, veteran diversity will not achieve parity as it s
significantly lagging behind the racially diverse levels of the nation (refer to Appendices C and D

Women s Right To Abortion In The United States
The 27 year old Salvadoran garment worker and single mother had miscarried without ever knowing
she was pregnant....hospital staff had suspected her of inducing an abortion and reported her to the
police.. A judge sentenced her to the maximum punishment for murder: 40 years in prison

has happened in countries where abortionlaws are not as free as those of the United States, which
since the Roe vs. Wade has confirmed women s rights to abortion. Domestically, the United States

The impact...is clear: preventing low income women, especially women of color, from making
their own decisions about what is best for their families and their lives (Albaladejo, A Witch
Hunt Against Poor Women,32). What is intriguing is that the U.S., an active member of the
United Nations, international policy does not correlate to the standards set by the U.N.
International standards set by the United Nations requires states to at least provide access to
safe and legal abortion in cases of rape, incest, or threats of the life of or health of the mother
(Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32). How is it that the United States
international policy then does not give funding to clinics in less developed countries? How can
the United States policy makers decide that people such as an 11 year old Chilean girl...raped
and impregnated by her mother s boyfriend (Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32)
can be denied access to a safe abortion and expected to be a mother. This reminded me of Hester
Einstein s discussion on SAPs and how the policy s intent does not always equal the outcome.
Because most of their food production is consumed within the family or traded in local markets,
women usually do not have the resources to switch to the export crops

Analysis Of Frank And Juliette s Music
Frank and Juliette, both discussed their own spiritual experiences, or version of as being related to
music. This presents the idea that music,in some ways, could be a secular alternative to religious
practices and understandings or simply a way of experiencing spirituality in secular spheres.
Frank:... listen to songs where I ve felt emotions and feelings that run past the specific context of
the song ... this applies to more of my life than it should... a lot of people have had that with music...
Ideas of transcendence and deep personal connection are apparent here.
Juliette: Concert, not a gig ... a concert where you ve been a fan for ages. There s all these people,
you re all in the same vibe... this person that you like, idolised. . . Florence and The Machine, her
music is very spiritual... it s really deep...and relatable. . . . I don t know if I d call myself spiritual

. . . I guess [I listen to music] pretty much every day . . . If you compare it to religion, is like praying
every day and then going to Church. So like, listening to music every day and then going to the

Initiation into a subculture, reflects initiation into religious rituals, thus, similar themes of
spirituality emerge. Participants can accept or reject concepts of spirituality upon attending a

Accuracy And Accuracy Of Knowledge
Knowledge is considered accurate when there is sufficient evidence that it is the truth. Over time,
methods of verifying the accuracy of knowledge change. As learners, we often equate accuracy
with the value of knowledge, however, the value of accuracy is dependent on the area of
knowledge under consideration. Today, accuracy in the natural sciences is vital as any error can be
catastrophic. In 1986, a flawed reactor and human error caused the Chernobyl disaster that exposed
millions to radiation and had significant long term impacts. However in history, complete accuracy
is almost unattainable. As historians cannot first hand experience past events, they can only try to
make connections with available sources to suggest what happened... Show more content on

Through the constant pursuit of knowledge, people began to put a greater emphasis on empirical
evidence rather than religion and its faith in the unobserved, and parts of these sacred texts began
to be ignored and upon the discovery of new contradicting information, even re interpreted. In the
Age of Enlightenment (1600 1800), there was shift from accepting traditional beliefs to
challenging them. This raises the knowledge question, to what extent has knowledge in the natural
sciences become more objective and less dependent on religious knowledge over time? For
centuries, churches in Italy were repeatedly destroyed by lightning. In 1769, the Church of San
Nazaro containing gunpowder exploded after being struck by lightning, destroying one sixth of the
city and killing over 3000 people. Despite placing iron rods on roofs being proven successful in
preventing lightning strikes, the theory suggested that lightning was an electrical phenomenon, and
not controlled by Satan, so the church rejected this. Following the tragedy did the Roman Catholic
Church withdraw its objection to lightning rods. In the natural sciences, knowledge is based on
what can be observed and proven through experiments. Before scientific discoveries were made,
people relied on faith to explain what they could not observe. However, by discovery through trial
and error,

Some will argue that they are beneficial to the body and others will say they harm the body in a

respect for the rules of sports, recognition that natural talents and their perfection are the point of
sports, and the prospect of an arms race in athletic performance.(Murray,6). President of Hastings

talent and perfection. He finally ends it by saying drugs destroy the competitive nature of all sports

Graph s Effect On Water Temperature
Graph 1 suggests that, during the 2002 03 El NiГ±o event, the water temperature at 50 and at 100
meters below sea surface remained similar from July 18 to September 29 of 2002; however, the
water temperature at 100 meters below the surface was slightly colder. After that date range, the
water temperature at 100 meters below the surface decreased by ≈5 °C while the temperature
at
50 meters below the surface remained constant throughout the entire length of time. The water
temperature at 200 meters below the surface remained colder than at 50 and 100 meters below sea
level and continued to decrease at a gentle slope from July 18 to December 5, by ≈5 °C. A
temperature increase of ≈2 °C was observed from December 5 to January 16.
As indicated by Graph 2, the water temperatures at 50 and 100 meters below sea level differed by
≈4±1 °C from each other, and decreased at similar slopes. The temperature at 100 meters
below sea level remained colder than that at a 50 meter deepth. The water temperature at 200
meters below sea level remained ≈10±2 °C lower than that of the other two depth
temperatures. From August 1 to August 15, the temperatures at 50, 100, and 200 meter depths

Isolation Of Holden Caulfield
Imagine being a depressed teenager who just got expelled from boarding school, and on the
verge of a mental breakdown. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, follows the life of a
depressed six foot two and a half inch, partially gray haired, and woefully angular sixteen year
old Holden Caulfield. Recovering from a recent breakdown, Holden tells his story from a mental
institution in California. His older brother D.B. is a successful writer in Hollywood, and his
younger sister Phoebe is attending elementary school in New York City. At thirteen years of age,
Holden entered adulthood because his brother Allie died from leukemia. Instead of seeing

Holden attended Pencey Prep, an upscale school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden talks to
his history teacher, Mr. Spencer, about getting expelled from Pencey Prep. The headmaster of
Pencey, Dr. Thurmer, claimed Holden wasn t playing the game of life. Dr. Thurmer gives
Holden advice that life is a game. Holden is referring to the game of life. Despite being from a
privileged New York family, Holden feels alienated, alone, and victimized, as if the world is

peers. He identifies with those on the other side of the game, and views the wealthy kids at his
schools as a bunch of phonies. Their lives are simple and they do not have to endure pain. He
cannot connect with them because none of them experienced the pain he went through when Allie
died. None of them understand Holden. Life is only a game for the people on the winning side.

How The Struggle In Rocket Boys And The Glass Castle
Anne Frank once said, The final forming of a person s character lies in their own hands. While
their childhood and the opinions of others have some impact, a person has just as much power to
decide who they want to be, as proven in the memoirs Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam and The
Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. These protagonists are validation that despite outside pressures, a
personcan grow up to be anyone they want to be. Similarly, for Homer Sonny Hickam of Rocket
Boys, working in Coalwood s coal mines seems essentially inevitable, since the town focuses on a
small range of activities. Hickam states that, Only coal mining was more important in Coalwood

cold in the house that icicles hung from the kitchen ceiling, the water in the sink turned into a

Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales during the Middle Ages. The Prologue from The

He was a man of God and did not corrupt the church. The Parson was poor in money but rich in
the spirit. According to Chaucer he truly knew Christ s gospel (l. 491). He also taught it to the
parishioners the way the gospel should be taught. He believed that if a person was corrupt while
teaching the word of God, then the listeners would also be corrupted. That if gold rust, what then
will iron do? (l. 510). This quote means that if a priest, which represents the gold, is corrupted
the followers of the priest, represented by the iron, would also be corrupted. The Parson also
followed what he preached. He taught the truth about Christ and would never be proud while
teaching it. The Parson was one of the few pilgrims that Chaucer admired. He admired the
Parson because he was a man of God and also was a good example of the church. He was a good
example by his teachings and the way he acted. The Monk and the Parson were both similar
because they held positions in the church. That was one of the only similarities between the two.
The main difference was that the Monk was a corrupted official of the church. The Parson was not
corrupted and a good man. This corruption of the Monk and other church officials led to bad
reputation of the church. Chaucer did not like the corruption within in the church but did show how
everyone was not corrupt but the majority

What Makes The Human Imagination In Alien
Alien is truly amazing from beginning to end as the hands on effort and imagination of Ridley
Scott is stunning, even in this day and age of special effects and CGI. The designs of Giger are
wildly indigenous and memorable and the editing by Terry Rawlings was the best thing I seen for
a 1979 movie, making for a perfect storm of a horror flick. No one who has seen Alienwill ever
forget the dinner scene, one of the most dramatic even to be shown to a thoughtless viewer. Even
the actors were unaware of what was coming down, maximizing the effect of the event.
Film monsters can never get any scarier than the Alien. It is almost always dangerous to project an
absolute about anything, but as far as I am concerned, everyone else can just flush their so called
monsters down the sewer. There just can t be anything in reality or the human imagination that can
top this creature that we barely get to see during most of this film. The metaphorically rich design
of this growl, biting, chomping, gut and head banging nightmare is terrifying.
If you think the Predator had a bad attitude, you will not believe the hostility that the Alien carries
around. The Predator, as tough as he was being about the same as the Pillsbury Doughboy when

Effects of Social Darwinism Essay
Introduction
The Effects of Social Darwinism on the social trends of the 19th century.
As a world view, Darwinism cannot of course be refuted, since Faith is, always has been, and
always will be, stronger than facts. Francis P. Yockey
Social Darwinism is a theory that competition among all individuals, groups, nations or ideas drives
social evolution in human societies. The term draws upon Charles Darwin s theory of natural
selection, where competition between individual organisms drives biological evolutionary change
through the survival of the fittest. The term was popularized in 1944 by the American historian
Richard Hofstadter, and has generally been used by critics rather than advocates of what the term is

The first advocate of the social Darwinism theory had a major impact on the American society as a
whole, starting from economic bases, to the big business minds of the time. In the United States,
Spencer gained considerable support among intellectuals and some businessmen, including steel
manufacturer Andrew Carnegie, who served as Spencer s host during his visit to the United States
in 1883. The most prominent American social Darwinist of the 1880s was William Graham
Sumner, who on several occasions told audiences that there was no alternative to the survival of the
fittest theory. Critics of social Darwinism seized on these comments to argue that Sumner
advocated a dog eat dog philosophy of human behavior that justified oppressive social policies.
Some later historians have argued that Sumner s critics took his statements out of context and
misrepresented his views.
This picture depicts the idea behind social Darwinism. IT is a powerful society in which keeps the
wealthy, and powerful and kicks out the minority, poor folks who are no longer able to survive in
such a materialistic world.

from economic policies, religious ideals, or political platforms, there were so many changes being

Self Identity In Cambio De Armas
Cambio de armas
The theme in which is constantly shown throughout the novel is the concept of self identity.
Identity is a state of mind in which one identifies his or her character traits in addition to one s
idea of being. Identity indicates one s mental, emotional and physical image of which they depict
themselves to be. It also refers to the construction of individual and society s characteristics by
which we are symbolized and recognized as to who we are. The concept of self identity is used in
many books and novels in order to tie the reader to the story. This is done in a way that the write

It is the belief in this existence of one s self, the assumption of all our experiences of
consciousness. We all embrace this identity that we feel is ours alone. I speak of my experiences
as experienced by me. I would seem to be talking nonsense, if I referred to myself in the plural or
spoke of how the multiplicity of me s experienced an event. Although most will submit to the
existence of levels of consciousness, we categorize those people who exhibit distinct personalities
as non ordinary. All popular theories of self identity set about the task of proving a singular self. I
will attempt to analyze the currently held theories of self identity, and consider cases where the
singular self identity of normal individuals is called into question. Psychologists seeking to clarify
this discussion have researched phenomena concerning the nature of self identity, and it s relation
with consciousness.
The second concept is the Random Identities. This ties in with the first concept of divided identity
because she is unable to give one single identity to the man. The author states on page one of the
novel: Next is the man: the one, he, the nameless man who she can call by which ever name that
comes to mind; they all function the same, and they all fit him. And when he comes in the house
he answers even if she calls him Hugo, Sebastian, Ignacio, Alfredo or whatever else. She refers to
him in her mind as the nameless one .

Aldous Huxley Literary Analysis
Aldous Huxley, English writer, novelist and philosopher raised in upper class milieus to the end
of the 19th century, is considered as one of the most brilliant men of his time, thanks to his great
use of intellectual analysis and satire among other resources as a medium for social criticism.
His evolution as a writer may be divided into three different phases determined by several
changes in his way of thinking or writing: he takes his first steps as a novelist through mysticism,
then he falls under the influence of D. H. Lawrence in what is called the Lawrencian interlude
and finally, he comes back to mysticism, retracing the path he once followed. His early novels,
such as Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923) and Those Barren Leaves (1925), show the ironic,
sceptic and real nature of Huxley in his first phase. After having lost all faith in humanity after the
Great War in 1914, he found the solution for his despair in philosophical mysticism : we must be
free from the body, the intellect and the personality. This doctrine is particularly present in the latter

Social Exclusion vs. Poverty Essay

It states in the Introduction of Labour s next steps: tackling social exclusion , that social exclusion
is about more than poverty and unemployment, it is also about being cut off and neglected by the

begin with, Theseus is a great hero, even in our time; he drove away Medea with the help of his
father, Aegeus. Second of all, Theseus also defeated the Marathonian Bull, a mighty bull that is
terrorizing the city of Marathon and Theseus cautiously and captured the bull in the city. Theseus
also defeated the Minotaur that was living in the labyrinth in Athens, Greece; the Minotaur was
hunting down the seven courageous boys and seven beautiful maidens. Furthermore, the major
league football player Patrick Tillman; a great hero even to this day, Patrick was a football player
for the Cardinals from 1998 to 2001. After the September ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example: Theseus was saved by Aegeus, Theseus s father, from being poisoned by Medea,
Aegeus s wife. The reason why Medea tried to poison Theseus is that she knew that he would
heir to the throne after his father. Stand your ground, fight for honor! Fight for the man beside
you! Fight for those who bore you! Fight for your children! Fight for your future! Fight for your
name to survive! Fight! For immortality! (Theseus). The relevancy of this quote is that you
should fight for what is right, for what you believe in, and most importantly, fight for your
brothers beside you. Second of all, Patrick Tillman is also a great hero, he quit football to join
the Army to fight against the Taliban after the September 11, 2001 crisis. Passion is what makes
life interesting, what ignites our soul, fuels our love and carries our friendships, stimulates our
intellect, and pushes our limits... (Patrick Tillman). The relevance of this quote is passion gently
leads our lives for the good of people. Both Theseus and Tillman are heroes in the same way; they

The Cores Of Confucianism
Introduction
From the 6th century to 221 BC, the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States period, the
Ancient China experienced a lengthy chaos. Nonetheless, in such bloody era, the brilliant Chinese
philosophers sprang up and started a Golden Age of philosophy. People call this phenomenon as
the Contention of a Hundred schools of Thoughts. The philosophers discussed about the best way
for a country to survive, for an emperor to rule and for people to live. Those thoughts impacted the
lifestyle and social consciousness not only at that time but even in the following thousands of years,
especially for the Confucianism which was exclusively adopted in Han dynasty and rule the China
for two thousand years. In this essay, I will focus on the Confucianism, discuss the central doctrines.
The Cores of Confucianism
As we know During the Spring and Autumn period, China s feudal system gradually became
significant irrelevant. The emperor of Zhou dynasty had real control over only a small royal
demesne centered on their capital Luoyi near modern day Luoyang. During the early part of the
Zhou dynasty period, royal relatives and generals had been given control over fiefdoms in an effort
to maintain Zhou authority over vast territory. As the power of the Zhou kings waned, these
fiefdoms became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Confucius envisioned proper government being guided by the principles of li. Some Confucians
proposed the perfectibility of all human beings with learning li as an important part of that process.
Overall, Confucians believed governments should place more emphasis on li and rely much less on
penal punishment when they govern. Though the Confucianism later was used by the government
to rule the country and maintain the feudal system strictly, the original purpose of Confucius did
not endorse the ideal that people should listen to all things by

The Political Parties During The 20th Century
The political parties today have undisputed role in the democratic process. Gaining importance
throughout the 20th century, they proved to be an instrumental mobilizing device, aiming to
involve the majority of the population in the political process for the first time in history.
Moisei Ostrogorski was a pioneer in the field with his works comparing the political parties in
the US and Britain. In his works he argued that parties are becoming inseparable part of the
democratic process within the state whenever this life of parties is developed, it focuses the
political feelings and the active will of its citizens (Ostrogorski in Hauge and Harrop:2010).
Ostrogorski`s stance on the increasing importance of parties in a democratic state politicsproved to
be justified in the countries of Western Europe, where the democratic tradition is strong, mass
political parties competed for the votes of ever increasing electorate. Parties proved to be important
even in non democratic societies in fascist and socialist states single parties dominated the state,
even in certain cases coalesced with it. The 20th centuryproved to be very important in the party
development process. They discarded the image of engagement mainly in capturing the leavers of
power and even ruling against the public will and interest. Since then parties have been accepted as
a necessary instrument that shapes the collective interest, whose role is explicitly noted in the state
constitutions. The topic of

Beach Erosion In Virginia Beach
Erosion has the ability to ruin large buildings or simply be an inconvenience to someone. Erosion
happens gradually and it happens by wind or water breaking pieces of an object. Humans are said
to have made the process faster. We are tearing trees and dirt and replace it with infrastructure.
Tearing down nature makes erosionmore liable. Since we have learned how we speed up erosion
and how erosion is bad for our creations, we can use that knowledge to know how to handle those
problems. First of all, farmers or gardeners acknowledge erosion and take into consideration of
how to deal with it. When farmers or gardeners plough their plants, the topsoil can easily be
eroded with wind or run offs. This can create problems for local streams or for the soil. People
learned to use other plants like bushes to counter wind erosion, also know as windbreak .... Show

If any architecture is structured poorly, erosion can easily contribute with destroying it.
Architects have to design a building in a way that will be sturdy to complications like erosion.
Lastly, in Virginia Beach, shoreline erosion is a main issue that is hard to counter. A temporary
way to manage beach erosion is by beach nourishment . Beach nourishment is replacing sand, that
was lost by erosion. It a controversial solution, but it is one of the most popular way to solve
beach erosion. It is impossible to stop erosion altogether because it is a natural occurrence.
Fortunately, humans have figured ways to handle erosion and even to use it to our advantage at
times. Without erosion the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the
Niagara Falls would not exist. Erosion may be troublesome to people, but erosion was not meant for

My Autobiography
As a kid, I was always extremely talkative. So talkative that teachers would get on to me. Teachers
would say so many different things to me, but I never let it bother me. The most common thing
they would say would be like, Kate, quit talking and go move to a different seat.
Usually, I would respond back with, Okay in an annoyed tone, because all I wanted to do was talk.
I would still find a way to talk to someone else, but after a while, I would hear my teacher say my
name again.
Kate this is your last chance to quit talking or else you re going to the office or I m going to be
calling your mom, they would say.
Okay, I would quietly respond back.
Throughout the years as I go little older I started caring about the little things people would say
about me. Like one of the little things that would bother me was when some of my friends or
even some classmate would point out how I have an accent, or how I would do things differently
than them. I became very subconscious about my speaking every single time I would talk because
I felt like everyone would be paying close attention to it. I didn t realize that as a kid that having an
accent would be that noticeable to others. Suddenly my life took a turn when I entered 5th
grade. It started out great. I had a few friends that I could communicate and hang out with, but as
weeks gone by I started to become like a closed door. I rarely said a word to any of my friends. The
most I would have talked was probably a sentence or two

Analysis Of Spring By Alistair Macleod
Attitudes Happiness It is a philosophical opinion that happiness cannot exist without melancholy.
Alistair MacLeod s short story The Boat and Edna St. Vincent Millay s poem Spring poignantly
illustrate this idea. Despite the fact that both compositions emphasize the notion that life is often
tainted with underlying negativity, the central characters of the two works differ in their ability
to navigate through troubles. This nuance in approach is what allows one character to experience
a modicum of joy even in the midst of adversity. Conversely, the character that lacks this nuanced
ability experiences only dissatisfaction. From the onset, both literary pieces convey gloom even
when discussing subjects which many would consider joyful. For instance, Millay s poem
approaches the season of spring with disgruntlement, as the narrator enters a rhetorical discussion
by claiming that [t]he smell of the earth is good (Millay), and then asking, what does that
signify? / Not only underground are the brains of men / [e]aten by maggots (Millay). This
condemnation of spring is not an isolated one. The poem opens by criticizing spring, and
addresses the season directly by demanding [t]o what purpose, April, do you return again? / Beauty
is not enough (Millay). The narrator, even while addressing a time of the earth s regeneration, is
mired in the macabre, ultimately leaving the reader with a sense of despondency. The concept of
underpinned bitterness is also prevalent in

Descriptive Essay On A Dog
I banged my head against my pillow. I don t want to go run a mile! I shouted. I waited for a
response, there was none. Suddenly, my door flew open. For a few moments, no one was there.
Suddenly, my mom came running in.
Run a mile with your brother now! My mom shouted irritatedly.
Ugg I murmured. My mom gave me a stern look.
I better not anger her. I thought to myself. I walked slowly to the door where my brother was
waiting. My brother was 13 at the time (now 14). By the look of his face, he looked angry. His
motions also assured me he was angry. He was tapping his foot. His face was annoyed. I could tell
he was mad at me.
I remember a long time ago, my brother used to be playful with me. He used to play imaginary
games with me. Now, he grew up . Now, he never plays games with me. Before, my brother barely
ever got mad at me, now he gets mad at me very easily. It s a mystery what happened. Or was it
because I am too annoying now?
As we walked to the track in silence, we heard 1 bark, 2 barks, 3 barks. What s that? I asked.
Just some dogs. my brother quickly replied back.
When we arrived at the track, we spotted the brown, small dogs.
I don t want to go anymore, I whined. Grow up! My brother shouted.
If I go back, my mom will be super mad at me. If I go, I might get bit by the dogs. It was a hard
decision. After a couple more moments of thinking, I decided to go. I went to peek back where the
dogs were. They were right at the entrance of the

Dr. Frankenstein, Science,Technology and Ethics Essay
Dr. Frankenstein, Science,Technology and Ethics
There is nothing more profound about the topic of science and technology than its ability to be a
partner in helping to save lives. It is so influencial in coming up with the latest drugs to combat
harmful and even deadly diseases and viruses such as AIDS, and some cancers. We are where we
are today because of the remarkable innovations in science and technology. The idea that lives can
be saved from such innovations as a new flu vaccine, or a new type of antibiotic that can battle
chicken pox, and many other diseases. Its all about the advancements that we get from science and
technology that let us live the way we do. Now, we dont have to worry about dying from the

I can still hear my mom telling this story, like it was just yesterday. Certainly in the early eighties,
they were still coming up with such advancements, I am curious as to whether or not they tested on
animals or did other things that we might put into question in todays society.
It makes me think just what they had to do to get such advancements and how other things were
effected by them whether it be a life lost, animal testing, or something else. Science is a
wonderful thing. It gives up the opportunity to create life, cure diseases, and so many other things
that make our lives much more enjoyable. It is because of science that we, the United States, are
where we are today. which is a hell of a lot more than any other developed or developing country
can say. Just recently, within the past two years, we have finally been able to decode the human
genome. Having accomplished that, we can now pin point exactly on which chromosome a certain
mutation has occured, and now we can use that information to get a cure to treat it. Because of this,
many more children will make it to reproductive maturity. There is just so much to be learned and
discovered out there, that scientists cant work fast enough! Along with the great things that
accompany such great advancements, there is the issue of what is ethical and moral in the way that
scientists are able to come up with the tests and experiments that will be used to further enrich our
lives for

Stratigraphy Of Ototoka Beach, Whanganui
Stratigraphy of Ototoka Beach, Whanganui Abstract This report aims to give an insight into the
Stratigraphic history of the formations observed at Ototoka beach, Whanganui and to apply the
use of various geological methods in examining individual sedimentary units in order to work
out the environment that would have existed at the time of their deposition millions of years
ago, and therefore we have constructed a history of environmental changes for the area over a
large scale of time, such as the rise and fall of sea level and the co occurring increase and
decrease of temperatures as a result, which has given us a better understanding of how the planet s
environments change over time and how ours is changing at the present day. Introduction
/Background We conducted our study at Ototoka Beach in Whanganui (Figure 5). The aim of our
project was to work in groups to measure a section along the beach using pace and compass
techniques whilst describing sediments, and collecting Micro and Macro paleontology samples for
further study. We combined the data we collected on the fieldtrip with data we were given along
with published literature to form an understanding of the stratigraphic record of Ototoka Beach.

Let America Be America Again Poem Analysis
Analysis of Let America Be America Again Langston Hughes wrote the poem Let America Be
America Again , where he touches on the failure of America to live up to the American dream
that it was meant to be. There is a message full of disappointment and desperation to change the
oppression in America. These are feelings that Hughes knows all too well. He knows the stab in
the back feeling of working hard for a country that does not work hard for the worker and in this
poem, he uses figurative language techniques to express them. The main idea of this poem is that
America promised its people that they would be free, however many American residents were
still enslaved. The author expressed how he has physically lived in America, but he has not lived
in an America that holds up to the values and dreams it was founded on. He expresses this in lines
1 4 when he says, Let it be the dreamit used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain, seeking a
home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me) . America was supposed to
be a dream come true where all men were free and able to have equal opportunity. Hughes uses
alliteration and repetition to emphasize this point. However, the black, the poor, and the oppressed
never experienced this promised America. Langston Hughes recognizes in the poem that it is not
right for the people who live and work in and love America to be enslaved by social injustice.
During Hughes time during the early 20th century, the country

The Creature Monologue Frankenstein
I sit on my log, lurking in the leaves. I m starving, but I must be patient. I will never get food
unless I lie perfectly still in the jungle undergrowth. All I hear are the endless drones of the
insects and the loud chirps and squawks of the jungle birds. All are simply local pests, not large
enough to satisfy my hunger. From afar I hear a strange, new noise, similar to the incessant
ruckus of the birds, but lower. I concentrate on the noise. Could this be my lunch? The sound
comes closer and closer. I hear the leaves and branches rustle. A flock of strange creatures

of the world. There is no being more powerful than my queen, my babies, or myself. Suddenly,
the creature makes its move and catches my queen off guard. I watch in horror as my queen is
flung screaming through the air. She smashes into the wall and bursts into flame. No! My
beautiful queen, the love of my life, has been bested by this frail creature, King of nothing. I
charge at him, determined to avenge my queen. There are flames all around, the same flames
that squelched my queen s flame of life. I assume that the creature will be afraid of the flame, as
most animals are, but alas, the creature appears to have power over the flame, much to my
dismay. The creature envelops me in flames. I scream in pain, but do not let the flames deter me
from my cause. I am the king. I must survive and defeat this creature, for the sake of my poor
queen, for the sake of my children, for the sake of my kind. I launch myself at the creature, but
before I can land on it and finally be victorious, the creature shoots a sharp talon at me and impales
me. The force of the impact sends me hurtling through the air. I notice with horror that I am flying

The United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates, more commonly referred to as the UAE, gained independence from
England in 1971. The late President, Sheikh Zayid bin Sultan al Nahyan, ruled the UAE from the
start of its sovereignty all the way until his death in 2004 (Rugh, 1997, p. 18). Zayid implemented
a federal monarchy across the state. Unlike many other monarchies, the UAE has sustained great
rule while maintaing peace with its people. Many factors influence this trend and without them the
regime of the UAE would most likely fail. The UAE has flourished for nearly 40 years with a
ruling governmental regime where the majority of power is put into the hands of only a select few
by disallowing political parties and restricting political participation (Rugh,... Show more content on

The federal government oversees major state issues such as immigration, foreign policy, public
health, wealth, transportation, and communications (Heard Bey, 2005, p. 361). But the individual
emirates still have great amounts of power over the residents. The emirates each regulate the
economy specific to its land and the money is given back to the citizens (Rugh, 1997, p.17).
Although the federal government holds the most power, the emirates are still allowed to function
with a degree of independence. The familial and traditional roles held by the leaders of the UAE
establish a long lasting legitimacy throughout the state. The current President and ruler of Abu
Dubai is Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan, son of the prior ruler. The Prime Minister, Vice
President, and Sheikh of Dubai is Muhammad Bin Rashid Al Maktum (CIA, 2014). Khalifa bin
Zayid was never formally elected to office, rather he was unanimously appointed to the seat on
the same day of his father s funeral. Because of the legacy and respect Sheikh Zayid created, his
son entered office with the entire UAE s support. The UAE functions tremendously through this
charismatic and traditional legitimacy; Sheikh Zayid was looked up to as a god for his 43 year
reign of power. In many states this long standing rule from one family would not be tolerated by
the public, yet it works so well in the UAE because Sheikh Zayid created and guided the state to
such high success immediately after gaining

Cancer And Its Effects On Cancer
Cancer is one of the most ambiguous diseases. As Jenny Phillips, a researcher in the thoracic
oncology field, said, I think the thing you need to know most about cancer is that we don t know
that much about it. Yes, it is known that cancer is the uncontrollable division of abnormal cells, but
how can it be stopped? That is the question. There are a number of treatments for this disease. There
are the traditional treatments: chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. There are also nontraditional
treatments such as the use of oncolytic viruses, acupuncture, and the targeting of matrices. Aside
from these treatments, are some other treatments that have recently been on the rise: personalized
medicine, targeted therapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. However, despite the number of
treatments available for cancer, it is yet to be determined which is the most effective. Part of the
problem lies in the fact that cancer is an individualized illness; each cancer is different and acts
differently. Gliomas are difficult to treat due to the low accessibility of tumors inside the brain
due to the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). Lung cancer can be difficult to treat, because blood flow
to the lungs is very different from that of other organs in the body (Jenny Phillips). In addition to
the specifics of each location of the body, each person is different and has a unique genetic make
up. This means each cancer will manifest within a certain set of genes which makes the task of

  • 2. Understanding Change Management Models With The End Goal We live in a world that is full of change and our organization is no different. With the upcoming move ahead of us to Arizona in the next 12 months we must start preparing. Our company has 2500 employees. We must be aware that some will lose their jobs, some will retire and some will move with the company. I will compare and contrast nine change models with the end goal to select one that best fits this organizational move. The most appropriate model will then be broken down by each step to show how it will be utilized within our company for this move. In order to be successful, we must understand to manage the correct strategy for our organization. Understanding change managementmodels can help managers evaluate, design, and deploy an approach to changes in organizations. It is important to do this because of the human nature for people to resist change. Even the simplest of things can cause employees to react strongly. Organizations must change in order to remain successful and competitive. With that being said lets get started. These are a list of the nine models that I will compare for our organizational change. The Lewin, three step model, Bullock and Batten, planned change, Kotter, eight steps, Beckhard and Harris, change formula, Nadler and Tushman, congruence model, William Bridges, managing the transition, Carnall, change management model, Senge, systemic model, and the Stacey and Shaw, complex responsive processes. • 3. Naturalistic Observations Of Naturalistic Observation What is naturalistic observation? How does a researcher collect data when conducting naturalistic observation research? Naturalistic observation gathers data to provide a complete and accurate picture of what occurs in a setting, (Cozby Bates, 2014, P. 119). The observation describes qualitatively events such as how people make decisions and how they solve problems using the skills individually and sometimes as a group think (Cozby Bates, 2014). Naturalistic observations take place in a normative setting such as sports event, work cycle, and observes behaviors in general or in a particular setting. The observation supports information on previously acquired skill such as natural tendencies such as smiling or laughing, enthusiasm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2016, P.59). Observational study in a naturalistic setting allows the participants to feel comfortable expressing how they think and feel about difficult topics and discussions. Those observations become the story of that which is studied. Grounded theory, according to Trochim et al. (2006) creates a setting where the researcher develops theories and questions and then uses the qualitative data to expand the theory and questions with links of understanding (P. 62). Those links of understanding help provide a better how and why of research. Distinguish between participant and nonparticipant observation; between concealed and unconcealed observation. Cresswell (2009) elaborates on the different roles of the researcher in observation (P. 182). The roles of an observer include conducting observation as a participant or just an observer, or unconcealed. The roles of observer can also include spending time as a participant and then becoming an observer or spending more time as an observer or participant and then filling the opposing role (observer or participant). Another role option for the observer is to observe from the outside and move into the setting, not as a participant but rather situated in the setting. Depending on the frame of the information gathered any of these situations are acceptable as the data gathering or researcher doesn t become intrusive or exclusive in whom they observe to prove a point. ... Prof. Computer Engineering Department, Punjabi University, Patiala) (Email: *arshrai90@gmail.com, **Kahlon.navroz3@gmail.com) Abstract Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) play main role in the design and development of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) who improves the road safety and transportation productivity. VANETs include two communication types i.e. Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Roadside (V2R) communications. One of the most important challenges of this kind of network are the timely, safely and reliable dissemination of messages between vehicular nodes which permits the drivers to take appropriate decisions to improve the road safety. There are many routing protocols for VANETs which can support the reliability and safety for routing. These protocols undergo the several limitations including complexity, lack of scalability, end to end delay, routing overheads, etc. To remove these limitations, various bio inspired methodologies have been proposed for routing among vehicular nodes in an optimized way. Here in this paper, various bio inspired routing algorithms for the VANET are discussed. 1.INTRODUCTION A Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) are considered as a specific type of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) which contains the of a set of mobile nodes (Vehicles) ... Wal Mart s position from the competitive forces model competition among rivals is fairly weak. The market is crowded but Wal Mart has the lowest costs, prices, profits, and market share. Wal Mart exerts a great deal of effort in making sure they are innovative and meeting customer requests. The bargaining power of suppliers is weak as well. For most producers, Wal Mart would be their largest account. The bargaining power of buyers is also weak. There is a very broad base of customers and a meaningful demand for low prices. The threat of new entrants is weak. Wal Mart has a scale of operation that is very important, it would take years, maybe even decades, for a new company to be on the same level. For 2009 ROA was 3.8%, so ROA increased between 2009 and 2010 fiscal years. Profit Margin for ROA is 4.8% for 2010 and for 2009 is 2.9%. We can see an increase... The only information that the statements do not disclose is which brands of merchandise increased their sales, and what was the cost of goods sold compared to the profit they made. Since the company was concerned about promotion of their private brand it would be helpful to know what percent of sales does their private brand make comparison to other brands. • 11. Min Wage Essay Should Minimum wage be increased? Introduction For many decades now, there has been heated debates concerning minimum wages and increases in those wages. Most people have a tendency to assume that when the minimum wage is increased people will benefit. They do not stop to think of the consequences that come from minimum wage increases. The general population merely assumes that people should make an adequate amount of income and never stop to consider the consequences, nor do they stop to consider alternatives. A rise in minimum wages is not necessarily the best approach to helping the poverty stricken individuals in this country. The following paper presents an overview of various problems concerning raising minimum wage, finding that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Poor The primary reason most people give for wanting to increase the minimum wage is that of helping poor people. There are many studies that indicate the benefits are just as numerous as the damage done. According to James Kaz, the majority of those who are paid minimum wage are not poor but rather one of at least one other income providers in a household. Most people working for minimum wage are teenagers...and those used to simply go work for almost nothing for some company or individual in the field they wanted their career . (Kaz02.html) It appears that the poor are done much more damage than good through minimum wage increases. Neumark et al. (1999) provide the following background in that regard: The lower employment occurs mainly because the increase in the cost of low skilled labor, relative to the cost of using other productive inputs (such as machinery or more skilled workers), leads employers away from using low skilled labor and toward these other inputs. This substitution effect is reinforced by the higher overall cost of production associated with the legislated increase in the wage for low skilled workers, which in turn raises the price of the product and results in less output sold. (NA) In addition, there are numerous workers who are adversely affected by a minimum wage change in the fact that they do not receive the full amount of the legislated increase. This is what happens to, say, an individual who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As learners, we often equate accuracy with the value of knowledge, however, the value of accuracy is dependent on the area of knowledge under consideration. Today, accuracy in the natural sciences is vital as any error can be catastrophic. In 1986, a flawed reactor and human error caused the Chernobyl disaster that exposed millions to radiation and had significant long term impacts. However in history, complete accuracy is almost unattainable. Through the constant pursuit of knowledge, people began to put a greater emphasis on empirical evidence rather than religion and its faith in the unobserved, and parts of these sacred texts began to be ignored and upon the discovery of new contradicting information, even re interpreted. In the Age of Enlightenment (1600 1800), there was shift from accepting traditional beliefs to challenging them. This raises the knowledge question, to what extent has knowledge in the natural sciences become more objective and less dependent on religious knowledge over time? For centuries, churches in Italy were repeatedly destroyed by lightning. In 1769, the Church of San Nazaro containing gunpowder exploded after being struck by lightning, destroying one sixth of the city and killing over 3000 people. Despite placing iron rods on roofs being proven successful in preventing lightning strikes, the theory suggested that lightning was an electrical phenomenon, and not controlled by Satan, so the church rejected this. Following the tragedy did the Roman Catholic Church withdraw its objection to lightning rods. In the natural sciences, knowledge is based on what can be observed and proven through experiments. • 31. Aldous Huxley Literary Analysis Aldous Huxley, English writer, novelist and philosopher raised in upper class milieus to the end of the 19th century, is considered as one of the most brilliant men of his time, thanks to his great use of intellectual analysis and satire among other resources as a medium for social criticism. His evolution as a writer may be divided into three different phases determined by several changes in his way of thinking or writing: he takes his first steps as a novelist through mysticism, then he falls under the influence of D. H. Lawrence in what is called the Lawrencian interlude and finally, he comes back to mysticism, retracing the path he once followed. His early novels, such as Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923) and Those Barren Leaves (1925), show the ironic, sceptic and real nature of Huxley in his first phase. After having lost all faith in humanity after the Great War in 1914, he found the solution for his despair in philosophical mysticism : we must be free from the body, the intellect and the personality. This doctrine is particularly present in the latter novel mentioned, in which the character Calamy takes the decision of living a hermit s life of meditation in the Italian mountains.... One of the other things he was accurate about was the clothes. On the confederate s side (South), the people had dirty clothes and there were some black soldiers. The South did not have much people fighting in the army, so the people who had to come in were the slaves from the southern plantations. While the south had dirty clothes, the union (North) had blue suits. Additionally, the North did not have as many black soldiers because the North had many people in their army. Gaining importance throughout the 20th century, they proved to be an instrumental mobilizing device, aiming to involve the majority of the population in the political process for the first time in history. Moisei Ostrogorski was a pioneer in the field with his works comparing the political parties in the US and Britain. In his works he argued that parties are becoming inseparable part of the democratic process within the state whenever this life of parties is developed, it focuses the political feelings and the active will of its citizens (Ostrogorski in Hauge and Harrop:2010). Ostrogorski`s stance on the increasing importance of parties in a democratic state politicsproved to be justified in the countries of Western Europe, where the democratic tradition is strong, mass political parties competed for the votes of ever increasing electorate. Parties proved to be important even in non democratic societies in fascist and socialist states single parties dominated the state, even in certain cases coalesced with it. The 20th centuryproved to be very important in the party development process. • 46. Analysis Of Spring By Alistair Macleod Attitudes Happiness It is a philosophical opinion that happiness cannot exist without melancholy. Alistair MacLeod s short story The Boat and Edna St. Vincent Millay s poem Spring poignantly illustrate this idea. Despite the fact that both compositions emphasize the notion that life is often tainted with underlying negativity, the central characters of the two works differ in their ability to navigate through troubles. This nuance in approach is what allows one character to experience a modicum of joy even in the midst of adversity. Conversely, the character that lacks this nuanced ability experiences only dissatisfaction. From the onset, both literary pieces convey gloom even when discussing subjects which many would consider joyful. For instance, Millay s poem approaches the season of spring with disgruntlement, as the narrator enters a rhetorical discussion by claiming that [t]he smell of the earth is good (Millay), and then asking, what does that signify? / Not only underground are the brains of men / [e]aten by maggots (Millay). This condemnation of spring is not an isolated one. The poem opens by criticizing spring, and addresses the season directly by demanding [t]o what purpose, April, do you return again? / Beauty is not enough (Millay). The narrator, even while addressing a time of the earth s regeneration, is mired in the macabre, ultimately leaving the reader with a sense of despondency. Let America Be America Again Poem Analysis Analysis of Let America Be America Again Langston Hughes wrote the poem Let America Be America Again , where he touches on the failure of America to live up to the American dream that it was meant to be. There is a message full of disappointment and desperation to change the oppression in America. These are feelings that Hughes knows all too well. He knows the stab in the back feeling of working hard for a country that does not work hard for the worker and in this poem, he uses figurative language techniques to express them. The main idea of this poem is that America promised its people that they would be free, however many American residents were still enslaved. The author expressed how he has physically lived in America, but he has not lived in an America that holds up to the values and dreams it was founded on. He expresses this in lines 1 4 when he says, Let it be the dreamit used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain, seeking a home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me) . America was supposed to be a dream come true where all men were free and able to have equal opportunity. Hughes uses alliteration and repetition to emphasize this point. However, the black, the poor, and the oppressed never experienced this promised America. Langston Hughes recognizes in the poem that it is not right for the people who live and work in and love America to be enslaved by social injustice. This was a skill that served him well in later years and may explain his capacity to survive so many hostile confrontations (27). The level of tactical development that Zhou Enlai showed at a young age would later turn into one of his most valued qualities. • 53. The Creature Monologue Frankenstein I sit on my log, lurking in the leaves. I m starving, but I must be patient. I will never get food unless I lie perfectly still in the jungle undergrowth. All I hear are the endless drones of the insects and the loud chirps and squawks of the jungle birds. All are simply local pests, not large enough to satisfy my hunger. From afar I hear a strange, new noise, similar to the incessant ruckus of the birds, but lower. I concentrate on the noise. Could this be my lunch? The sound comes closer and closer. I hear the leaves and branches rustle. A flock of strange creatures emerge from the brush. If I could laugh I would have! These hideous creatures look like enormous beak less birds whose feathers have been plucked entirely off except for a small... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are prospering in this new land. Suddenly, while enjoying an evening meal of birds with my lovely queen, one of those hideous creatures crashes through the roof of my new home! My queen charges at the creature, defending herself, but the creature puts up a mean fight. The two battle for what seems like an eternity. I do not interfere. My queen is the most powerful queen of the world. There is no being more powerful than my queen, my babies, or myself. Suddenly, the creature makes its move and catches my queen off guard. I watch in horror as my queen is flung screaming through the air. She smashes into the wall and bursts into flame. No! My beautiful queen, the love of my life, has been bested by this frail creature, King of nothing. I charge at him, determined to avenge my queen. There are flames all around, the same flames that squelched my queen s flame of life. I assume that the creature will be afraid of the flame, as most animals are, but alas, the creature appears to have power over the flame, much to my dismay. The creature envelops me in flames. I scream in pain, but do not let the flames deter me from my cause. I am the king. I must survive and defeat this creature, for the sake of my poor queen, for the sake of my children, for the sake of my kind. I launch myself at the creature, but before I can land on it and finally be victorious, the creature shoots a sharp talon at me and impales me. The force of the impact sends me hurtling through the air. I notice with horror that I am flying towards my nest, which is full of my children. I collide with the nest, which bursts into flames. This, I realize, is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. The United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates, more commonly referred to as the UAE, gained independence from England in 1971. The late President, Sheikh Zayid bin Sultan al Nahyan, ruled the UAE from the start of its sovereignty all the way until his death in 2004 (Rugh, 1997, p. 18). Zayid implemented a federal monarchy across the state. Unlike many other monarchies, the UAE has sustained great rule while maintaing peace with its people. Many factors influence this trend and without them the regime of the UAE would most likely fail. The UAE has flourished for nearly 40 years with a ruling governmental regime where the majority of power is put into the hands of only a select few by disallowing political parties and restricting political participation (Rugh,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The federal government oversees major state issues such as immigration, foreign policy, public health, wealth, transportation, and communications (Heard Bey, 2005, p. 361). But the individual emirates still have great amounts of power over the residents. The emirates each regulate the economy specific to its land and the money is given back to the citizens (Rugh, 1997, p.17). Although the federal government holds the most power, the emirates are still allowed to function with a degree of independence. The familial and traditional roles held by the leaders of the UAE establish a long lasting legitimacy throughout the state. The current President and ruler of Abu Dubai is Khalifa bin Zayid Al Nuhayyan, son of the prior ruler. The Prime Minister, Vice President, and Sheikh of Dubai is Muhammad Bin Rashid Al Maktum (CIA, 2014). Khalifa bin Zayid was never formally elected to office, rather he was unanimously appointed to the seat on the same day of his father s funeral. Because of the legacy and respect Sheikh Zayid created, his son entered office with the entire UAE s support. The UAE functions tremendously through this charismatic and traditional legitimacy; Sheikh Zayid was looked up to as a god for his 43 year reign of power. In many states this long standing rule from one family would not be tolerated by the public, yet it works so well in the UAE because Sheikh Zayid created and guided the state to such high success immediately after gaining ... • 55. Cancer And Its Effects On Cancer Cancer is one of the most ambiguous diseases. As Jenny Phillips, a researcher in the thoracic oncology field, said, I think the thing you need to know most about cancer is that we don t know that much about it. Yes, it is known that cancer is the uncontrollable division of abnormal cells, but how can it be stopped? That is the question. There are a number of treatments for this disease. There are the traditional treatments: chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. There are also nontraditional treatments such as the use of oncolytic viruses, acupuncture, and the targeting of matrices. Aside from these treatments, are some other treatments that have recently been on the rise: personalized medicine, targeted therapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. However, despite the number of treatments available for cancer, it is yet to be determined which is the most effective. Part of the problem lies in the fact that cancer is an individualized illness; each cancer is different and acts differently. Gliomas are difficult to treat due to the low accessibility of tumors inside the brain due to the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). Lung cancer can be difficult to treat, because blood flow to the lungs is very different from that of other organs in the body (Jenny Phillips). In addition to the specifics of each location of the body, each person is different and has a unique genetic make up. This means each cancer will manifest within a certain set of genes which makes the task of finding a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
