English Essay on Uncle Tungsten
How Passion Drives the Romance for Science in the essay
Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks
Oliver Sacks is a neurologist who is also known for being a storyteller ¹. Aside from his career, Sacks
is a best selling author having written twelve books up to date, all bringing together science and art ².
One of his earlier pieces is his essay Uncle Tungsten which combines passion and the love for science.
Uncle Tungsten is an essay that shows how passion drives the romance for science, romance being the
strong fascination and enthusiasm for science, a love affair . Oliver Sacks uses narration to present the
idea of romance for science through characters, the concept of a hero, and an ending that provides a
lesson learned.

Scheele has done so many great things in the world of chemistry including his discovery of Tungsten,
which was Dave s favorite metal. Not only did Scheele s discoveries make him a hero for Dave, but
also his dedication to his work without wanting the fame and money. Sacks s use of a hero also
demonstrates an example of how passion drives romance for science Scheele epitomized for me the
romance of science (Sacks 219). Scheele was wholly dedicated to his single passion, chemistry (Sacks
219) which shows his strong, lifelong fascination and enthusiasm for chemistry presenting Sack s idea
of romance for science.
Narrative essays typically end with some kind of lesson learned ³, in addition to being a hero , Scheele
also provides a lesson which leads oliver to discovering his own romance for science. Lessons
generate a new knowledge or wisdom, which is commonly used to conclude a story and relates to the
main point of the entire essay. Sack s uses this approach to conclude his essay in a narrative way while
summing up his main idea of romance for science. Scheele was a hero for uncle Dave and also
impressed Oliver with his generosity and discoveries which really had an impacts on Oliver s
newfound love for chemistry. After learning about Scheele, Oliver had come to a conclusion that he
wanted to be a chemist just like Scheele I wanted to be a chemist. A chemist like Scheele (Sacks 219).

Spielberg s Oskar Schindler As A Business Man
One of the most emotional movies I ve ever seen. Spielberg has documented evil and made a moving
tribute to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The story centers around the true story of Oskar
Schindler, a war profiteer who paid to save the lives of Jews during the holocaust.
The film presents Schindler as a business man, a womanizer, a profiteer, and a humanitarian. This
contrasts allow for a beautiful character development. His interactions with Ralph Fiennes, who is
very chilling as the commandant of the concentration camp Amon Goeth, shows him to be a man
struggling with hypocrisy. He disapproves of Goeth s cold blooded murder and harsh treatment of the
Jews, but he clearly enjoys Goeth s company. He has a hard time reconciling

Talent Management
Critically evaluate the development issues that arise for managing talent. Evaluate the appropriateness
of different development interventions for talented employees.
Introduction:
Talent management is defined as the strategies and practices needed to identify, develop, attract and
retain skilled workers of value to an organisation. (Rands 2009). It can be described as a holistic
approach to the strategic management of the organisation s employees. Organisations need to view
their people as investments which add value to the company and not as costs which take from the
bottom line. Having a talent management system in the organisation is crucial to growing the value of
that human capital. If we analyse the critical factors for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Employees who view their company s talent management practices favourably, tend to be more
confident about the organisation s future.
They have greater opportunites to achieve to reach their own career and life goals.
Employees are more engaged and feel greater job satisfaction.
They understand the value of their contribution to the organisation s goals.
They have more favourable views of the management team and develop a great sense of pride in
where they work.
They believe that their work performance is evaluated fairly and they experience strong feelings of
personal achievement.
Development Issues:
There are a number of development issues associated with talent management. At the top end of an
organisation, the ability to make strategic decisions, react quickly to situations of ambiguity and keep
the company focused during periods of intense pressure and change, is seen as crucial. At a time when
the need for talented leaders and management is increasing rapidly, big companies are finding it
increasingly difficult to attract the right kind of people. Even if the best talent can be recruited,
retaining them is proving to be an even more difficult challenge again. Holding on to their top talent
requires more than just financial incentives. Despite record bonuses, the Financial Times reported in
June 2006 that 17% of City workers

What Does Green Symbolize In The Great Gatsby
A very powerful color that is shown right from the beginning of the novel is green. Throughout this
story, green is used to represent wealth and true happiness. Typically, green is shown through Gatsby s
character because of his great fortunes and desires. As stated by Berman, The Great Gatsby , Money,
after all, has been only a means to express otherwise inchoate ideas (Berman n.d.). This is a very
powerful quote in the sense that it describes a major theme in the novel; money cannot buy happiness.
What truly matters is the amount of love and happiness in life. Fitzgerald often tries to portray the idea
of quality over quantity through Gatsby and his green surroundings. Green is largely shown in the
novel as a light at the end of Daisy s dock. Gatsby often stares at this light, and he references back to it
often throughout the story. In the novel it says, ...and distinguished nothing except a single green light,
minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock (Fitzgerald 21). This light represents
Gatsby s love for Daisy. No matter how hard he tries, it appears that Daisy is simply out of reach. The
light is literally his beacon of hope. Green sums up Gatsby and Daisy s love affair, including the way
he uses his fortunes to try to impress her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned by Huber, Fitzgerald uses the color white for the real West, although he doesn t even
mention the name of the color (Huber, n.d.). The colors presence is so powerful, that it does not even
need to be directly stated. For example, just talking about snow shows the same effects as the color
itself. Jordan and Daisy are shown at first in white dresses. The reason behind Fitzgerald s logic here
is to portray the two young women as pure and new as possible. They become very dynamic
characters throughout the novel as we see, and their white purity turns pretty quickly to a different

The Impact Of Religious Culture In Giovanni Boccaccio s...
Religious culture in Italy grew and developed in several ways over its span of existence. It was also a
time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the different aspects
of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing that it determined
their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time period that are used for
current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In particular, Giovanni Boccaccio s
Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the religious culture during the 1350 s,
which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional short stories gave people a different
side of the story and how people truly regarded religion during this time. Currently, people who read
these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious culture was back then and it gives a different
thought process, seeing that while it is not particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious
culture. Specifically, the story he tells us in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious
culture of Italy during that time and how seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much
that one man lived a horrid life and still managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried
there. Religious culture over the years has changed in hundreds of ways, with copious different
aspects to deal with and different statements about what should be

Friendship In Freak The Mighty By Rodman Philbrick
Throughout the novel, Freak the Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick brings the two main characters,
Max and Kevin nicknamed Freak , together through friendship between two completely different
people. The two friends friendship made both Kevin and Max stronger in their own ways; whether it
be Max and his self confidence or Kevin with his size. The friendship they had changed both the main
characters and others around them for the better in the end. Friendship also taught them how to treat
one another whether it be in the case of Max and his dad, Killer Kane, or Freak the Mighty and
Loretta, a side character in the novel. Max and Kevin s friendship made both of them stronger and

When Max was kidnapped by his dad it changed him, for example on page 128, Max is yelling, I saw
you kill her! I saw you kill mom! I never forgot, not ever! I know you did it! I know! (Philbrick 128).
Before becoming friends with Freak, Max would have never yelled that because he was considered the
quiet kid that never talked to anyone. But because of the friendship it gave Max self confidence to yell
and stand up to his dad. Another example is when Loretta, a side character in the novel, tried to help
Max escape his dad. Loretta was considered to be the Heroic Biker Babe after she suffered a neck
injury while helping Max escape. This showed how much she changed because she was considered to
be a bad lady or evil. Finally another person that changed in the book was Freak, he went from a know
it all child to a young caring person. Before Freak met Max he would walk around always correcting
people and never thinking twice about it. But in the end of the book he learns what boundaries are, and
thinks about how what he says will affect others and how it will make them feel. These were a few
examples of change in the

Analysis Of The Second Sex By Simone De Beauvoir
Simone de Beauvoir starts her second volume of book, The Second Sex, with the statement, One is not
born, but rather becomes, a woman (267). This is one of the most famous statement of de Beauvoir.
She argues that a woman is not born fragile, passive, or secondary; she is forced by her environment
and the society to become so. A woman learns her role from her circumstance. She is not born shy,
gentle, or passive, but is gradually shaped in that way by her upbringing. I agree with de Beauvoir s
argument. I also believe that femininity does not come from birth, it is shaped by our culture and
sophistication. The difference between characteristics of male and female is not because of any
biological reasons, but it is because of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are a lot of criticism on this topic. Many people argue that men are biologically stronger, and
are risk takers. They claim women focus more on emotions. I do agree that men and women are
physically different. Men, on average, have greater muscle mass and denser bones. Men tend to be
taller, and have weigh more than women, in general. However, it has nothing to do with strength.
Many women lift weights and train hard nowadays. Those women will be able to do any sort of
physical activity like men do. Women s bodies are capable to attaining the strength that a man s body
can. Now, one might argue women have to train to be strong, but men are naturally strong. This
argument is not valid because women are not given a chance to use their strength since a young age.
Whenever there is a need to lift, shift or move heavy things, men are asked to do so. Girls from a
young age learns that it is not her job to lift things, so she does not care about strengthening herself.
Therefore, feminine and masculine characteristics and behavior that are not tied to biology but instead
originate from the culture specific perception, treatment of what sex you are and should be. If children
would see women lifting and pushing weights, they would not think that only men should be strong. If
they would see their father taking care of them like their mothers do, they would not think that only
women are tender

Dramatic Irony, Verbal Irony, and Comic Juxtaposition in Trying to Help Jim
Language matters. More specifically, the words we use change the way we perceive the world around
us. This theory, known as linguistic relativism, gives us a way of analyzing the motivations and
worldviews of characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the way they discuss the
problems presented to them. This is especially important when discussing reform, as a character s
changes in speech can help us asses the affect their environment has on their ability to ameliorate the
situation. In Chapter 36, Trying to Help Jim, Twain presents a cynical picture of reformation, arguing
that regression pervades ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While he understands the need to work quickly, he doesn t care enough to simplify his plan, instead
opting for having fun at Jim s expense in the meantime. More interestingly, however, the way in which
Tom frames the entire situation is mimicked by Huck during the aforementioned case knife scene.
Huck uses the same altered version of morality as Tom, indicating that while he is still in favour of
getting Jim out quickly, he contextualizes the problem in the same way that Tom does, whose views
on the subject have already been shown to be ethically dubious. Although his specific perspective
differs from Tom s, the way in which he is interpreting the problem at hand speaks volumes about his
change in attitude. A mere few chapters prior when Huck said All right, then, I ll go to hell , Jim s
enslavement was a real threat, and it corresponded to an incredibly difficult ethical dilemma in Huck s
mind (Twain, 214). In contrast, the issue in Trying to Help Jim has been rendered abstract, and
consequently neither Huck nor Tom take the problem with the appropriate gravity or

Developing Critical Thinking Skills Is A Duty Of All Teachers
Developing critical thinking skills is a duty of all teachers; and if teachers fail to use learning
opportunities and produce a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, they are failing their
students. Critical thinking allows students to see things from different perspectives in an unbiased
way. It also encourages students to think for themselves and to question things. Finally, it teaches
students that learning is fluid and builds upon itself. Learning to think critically takes time; and
teachers can use questions, cooperative learning, and feedback to help students develop this important
skill that they will use all of their lives. Professional Knowledge Base One way that teachers can
develop critical thinking in students is by asking questions (Barell, 2003). Questioning makes students
look at things from different perspectives (Clark Whitney, 2009). According to a recent study by Clark
and Whitney (2009), Seeing things from different perspectives allows students to see things as if they
are walking in their shoes (p. 530). This allows students to see the bigger picture. Students do not
know everything about every single topic, so it gives others a chance to persuade students thinking.
While listening to other s ideas, students must keep an open mind and think about the other person s
background while considering the information they are providing (Beckham, 2001). 1 John 4:1 says,

Learning A Second Language
Living in such a diverse nation containing nearly over 350 languages, does it make sense ignoring all

Comparing Poems The Fish And At The Fishhouses
The American poet, Elizabeth Bishop, was a 20th century poet who was highly reputable for her
published work. She was a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1956, and a National Book Award Winner for
Poetry in 1970. She two of many famous poems, are The Fish and At The Fishhouses. These two

Designing a film is something not everyone can do. It takes a lot of patience and attention to detail to
ensure the creators of films make the best possible scenes with zero to minimal mistakes. Every scene
needs to be spot on with elements such as setting, lighting, costuming, and temporal elements. When
watching a movie for the first time, people don t normally pay much attention to the small details but

The 19th century was a time of modernization throughout the world. Paris and New York were two

intensification of urban density that transformed New York City during the poet s lifetime. Compost
bears the marks of the poet s growing unease with the environmental effects of the escalation of urban

question of whether this escalating demographic density and the resulting waste, decay, and

plenitude and the profusion of nature (Farland 2). As much as Whitman celebrated individualism

First Cars Ltd
First Cars plc Critical path analysis is a method that is used to plan out the many activities involved in
a project to be able to find the most efficient way of complete it and how to complete it on time. From
a research and development point of view, the decision to go ahead with this project relies solely on
the critical path analysis provided by Amy Jones. In light of this, the operations director is rightly
concerned about how valuable the data provided by the critical path analysis is. The arguments for and
against seem to be balanced. Therefore, I present the most significant argument of how valuable a

mean that they have thrown the whole project down the drain; this is because it is extremely important

market. Not only could the project be in jeopardy but the whole of the business if any of the deadlines

the argument seems to be relevantly balanced I believe there is a lot to loss on this project, a
considerably amount more than what is at stake to be gained. The project is so unsafe for a business
which is already struggling to survive. I think that First Car plc needs to hold fire and invest in a
project which will guarantee to bring in profits and cash quickly rather than one that is extremely risky
with no previous data to compare it on and one that entails extremely high costs cars could be sitting

could be a seasonal business in regards to when someone might want a car and what for. Due to the
reasons above I believe that in this case the value of the critical

The Wicker Man Essay
Filled with mystery and thriller, The Wicker Man is one of the strangest yet interesting films out there.
In the film, the story takes place on a small private island off of Washington where Nicholas Cage s
character, Edward Malus, is looking for his daughter who had vanished. It is filled with twists and
turns throughout the film, making it interesting and entertaining. I felt as if the film was well made
and had a different storyboard compared to traditional thriller mysteries.
Edward Malus, a police man in Washington, has been experiencing strange dreams and hallucinations
since a car crash occurred after he had pulled a woman and her daughter over. He later receives a letter
from his ex fiancé, Willow, telling him that her daughter, Rowan, (later finding she was his child) has
gone missing and asks him for his help to find her. After arriving to the small secluded island, he
meets some of the local residents and starts to have bad feelings about whole community, especially
when they were not being helpful. Malus finds clues on what could of possible happened to their
daughter Rowan throughout the film and coming to the conclusion and the town is doing human
sacrifices, Rowan about to become one. At the end, he finds Rowan and finds out that he was tricked

Analysis on a Modest Proposal
English Commentary Digression
A modest proposal by Jonathan Swift is a rhetoric piece that satirizes the dismal political, social and
economic conditions in 18th century Ireland. As a solution, the preposterous proposal suggests that the
Irish eat their own babies; as it is logically viable, and economically profitable: a condition adhering to
the rational mentality of the age of reason. Swift develops his argument on two levels: A seemingly
intellectual persona, caricaturized on a stereotypical upper class Englishman who promotes
cannibalism through the use of subtle euphemisms. And the other, as himself, cleverly veiled in the
caustic undertones of the pamphlet who is appalled at the plight of the Irish. Swift uses this dual ...

The trustworthiness of the persona is further questioned, as he justifies himself by Psalmanazar
(another authority), who is known to be a fraud.
The persona uses the form of a ceremonial speech to dress his proposal, disgracing the condition of
the Irish, in light of his visionary idea. The features of a speech as such would include strategic
procatalepsis [1] (some scrupulous people might be apt to censure such a practice, although very
unjustly indeed) adopted by the persona, to disillusion the reader into believing he has taken into
consideration all possible objections; reflective of him being both well researched and reasonable. To
an extent the sophistry[2] achieved in this extract through double negatives, It is not improbable
confuses the reader into agreement with the persona. This is further complemented by his tone of
matter of fact seriousness, veiling the actual absurdity of the proposal. On a literal level, these
persuasive tactics establish him as credible. However, Swift s deriding undertones expose them as an
obvious hoax to sway the audience.
It is at this point the audience realizes that the proposal is a satire, as the persona confidently refers to
then current events of known unreliability to assure his credence. Swift uses this irony to reveal the
persona as a sham, and hence awaken the audience to the reality, that the proposal is not meant to be
taken seriously.

Cause Of The Korean War
Cause of the Korean War The Korean War is often referred to as the forgotten war, but when 5 million
people are killed during a three year period, the war should not be so easily forgotten. (Staff, 2009)
The causes of the war need to be reviewed, so that in the future, humanity can view ways to prevent it
from happening again. There are numerous factors that need to be considered when examining the
causes of the Korean War, such as the way the Korean peninsula came to be North and South Korea,
the role Korea played during the Cold War, the type of governments that were put into place after the
North and South were separated, and the support that was provided to the North and South by other
countries.

The United States also did not want the Soviet Union to strengthen their hold in the Pacific with the
fear of communism spreading across the world. This caused tensions between the two countries that
would bleed over to the commencement of the Korean War and aggravated Cold War relation between
the world s two superpowers.
The Korean War had a profound effect on the Cold War. The USSR and U.S. provided a lot of support
for North and South Korea during and after the war based on the agendas of Moscow and Washington.
After World War II, with the divided of Germany and Korea, the Cold War had started. America
backed by the United Nations wanted free governments in the world and the Soviet Union want to
have control over the world under communist governments. The Soviets saw the United Nations as a
threat in Europe and the same can be said for the Korean peninsula. (Encyclopedia, 2016) Both
superpowers of the world had their own visions of how the world should look. This is why the Cold
War influence the Korean War, because without the battle of communism versus capitalism, the
Korean War might not have happened, or would have played out very differently. The cause of the
tension in Korea started with the inconclusive split of the country, but the two governments that were
put into place after World War II fueled the fire for the start of the Korean War. The United States

Theme Of Patriotism In King Henry V
Throughout the play Shakespeare explores the theme of patriotism and warfare through the character
of Henry V. King Henry V is the main character in the play. For Shakespeare, Henry V was the perfect
portrait of a warrior and king and his war decisions was the best for England and its people.
Shakespeare shows in the play his highly political admiration for Henry V, who leaps from success to
successes. Henry V has completed the transformation from the young prince into a responsible one. As
the play opens, the Bishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely discuss how much King Henry V has
changed:
Canterbury: The King is full of grace and fair regard.
Ely: And a true lover of the holy church.
Canterbury: The courses of his youth promised it not. The breath no sooner left his father s body, but
that this wildness, mortified in him, seemed to die too. Yea, at the very moment consideration Like an
angel, came, and whipped the offending Adam out of him, leaving his body as a paradise (I, I,22 30)
Henry V became a great leader and outdoes in his duties:
Canterbury: Hear him debate of commonwealth affairs, you would say it hath been all in all his study.
The list he discourages of war, and you shall hear a fearful battle rendered you in music. Turn him to
any cause of policy, the Gordian knot of it he will unloose. (I,i,38 52).

Tanning Bed And Skin Cancer Essay
A tanning bed is a faster way to tan, but is it good or bad? This leads to our topic, Do tanning beds
cause skin cancer? So yes or no, some people would say no, but the truth is that a tanning bed has the
same harmful rays like the sun, or even worst. Both tanning beds and sun, harm your integumentary
system with UV rays. Associated with these rays cause three major skin cancer: are Basal Cell
Carcinoma (BBC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), and Melanoma the main one.
We hypothesize that the time exposed to tanning beds, increases the risk of skin cancer. This
hypothesis was a way to understand the statement, tanning beds give more harmful UV radiation rays

The Innocence of Daisy Miller Essay
In 1878, Henry James wrote, Daisy Miller, a novella about a young American girl and her travels in
Europe. Daisy Miller is a complex short story with many underlying themes such as appearance
versus reality, knowledge versus innocence, outward action versus inward meditation, and Nature
versus urbanity. In this short story, one is left to judge whether Daisy Miller, the main character of the
story, is a pretty American flirt or a misunderstood, modern young woman. By probing into the
complexities and contradictions of Daisy s character, it is obvious that Ms. Miller is merely a
misunderstood young woman.
Through his novel, Henry James shows his readers that the gap between what people believe to be true
and the actual truth can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He decides a pretty American flirt would be acceptable for him to know. Mainly he wants an excuse to
spend time with her. His desire for her to be innocent and undesigning reflects not only on her true
personality but also on his lust for her.
Mrs. Costello s character symbolizes old money and culture, even though she is American, and thus
sets up a stark contrast to Daisy Miller, a character devoid of much ritual or formality. Mrs. Costello
had lived much of her life in Europe and had kept a society so intentionally exclusive in America that
she has separated herself from any of the qualities associated with the innocence and natural
spontaneity of an American.
She believes the Miller s to be common and tells Winterbourne to stay away from them. However,
Daisy represents to Winterbourne what he lacks, standing as a metaphor of what all of Europe lacks,
as long as Daisy does not go too far with her social freedom.
Winterbourne is largely blinded to the honesty and innocence that Daisy imparts because he has
trouble recognizing a manner that has become foreign to him. Thus when Daisy walks calmly along
with both Giovanelli and Winterbourne in the Pincio and does not seem anxious to get rid of
Winterbourne, Winterbourne is perplexed (36 37). He does not realize that she does not know better
and she will ruin herself because of it.

Erving Goffman s Stigma And Social Identity
The main point Erving Goffman made in his article Stigma and Social Identity how different types of
stigma effect people in their daily life. You could be stigmatized in many different ways such as how
you look, if you are handicapped or not, or even if you are from a different ethnicity. Goffman defines
three different primary typologies of stigma and they are: (1) abomination of the body, which means
someone has physical disabilities, (2) Blemishes of individual character, meaning moral failing such
as rapist, sex offender, and (3) tribal stigma, meaning your ethnical background and religion (Pontell,
2016, p. 96 97). Goffman also talks about how the individuals, who are stigmatized by the society, feel

96 97). I personally think that blemishes of individual character and tribal stigma are both useful in
understanding the phenomenon of stigmatization, as both them play a key factor when someone is left
out. But I strongly believe that blemishes in individual character play a huge role when it comes to
stigmatization. I say this because now a days in a society if you are from a different ethnical
background, it would not hold you back in some opportunity and in some places it would but it is not
the same as it used to be back in the days. And as of individual who are handicapped are stigmatized
because we assume that he/she might not be able to do the job and somewhere I think that individuals
who are handicap might think the same for themselves and would be held back from opportunities.
But if you have a blemish in your character, such as if you are labeled as rapist or sex offender, you
are always going to be seen as a bad person. People around you are going to say hateful and mean
things about you and sometime with these labels you will not get a job easily. And the reason is that
the society is going to judge you and assume all the bad things you did, even though it might not have

Youth And The Hip Hop Youth Culture
Australian Youth Culture
Introduction
Youth has various definitions. It can be considered as a state of mind, a life stage, or a stage of
development. Youth can also be considered as a creation of marketing and a demographic category.
Youth cultures as well as subcultures based on the theory or theories applied refer to cultures that in
most part comprise of young people as the members. Youth cultures are determined by ways of living
and they revolve around peer groups that stress a definitive style of living as an external designation of
affiliation and appearance. In this essay, I will analyse how globalisation, popular culture, and
consumerism emerge as factors that influence the participation of young people in the hip hop youth
culture in Australia. I will also apply the human ecological theory in order to facilitate the
understanding of factors that affect youth participation in the hip hop culture.
Culture is generally described as a way of life. It entails the meanings, values, practices, and beliefs
that are usually contrasted with structure, nature, and biology (Alim, 2006). As a concept, culture can
be divided into two. The first classification of culture is the expressive culture form which comprises
of argot, artifact, behaviour, and clothing that constitute the expression of a given youth culture (ibid).
The second classification of culture is the impressive form of culture content. This implies to the
culture meaning (ibid). In the same vein, youth

Interval Walking Benefits
Walking is a proven exercise that carries a wealth of benefits. However, if you want to up the ante a
little bit and gain more benefits from your walking regimen, you can do interval walking. This is a
type of walking exercise where you walk at a steady pace and then like interval training, do short
bursts of aerobic activity combined with periods of rest and recovery.
For example, if you are planning to do brisk walking for 30 minutes, you can speed up the pace by
jogging for about two to three minutes every five minute intervals. If you are on the treadmill, do the
same thing by breaking into a run or getting off the equipment and doing jumping jacks. The same
thing can be done when you are power walking two minutes of slow jogging every five minutes. You

You will definitely lose weight faster if you break out of your plateau by modifying your walking
workouts this way.
Another benefit if you interval walk is increased stamina and endurance due to a strengthened
cardiovascular system. Regular walking, by itself, already reduces your risk of high blood pressure,
type 2 diabetes and heart attack. It lowers your cholesterol and blood sugar levels and protects you
from kidney diseases and the development of cancers. When you interval walk, you enhance your
cardiovascular capacity and as a result are able to reap these benefits even if you only do the exercise
in a much shorter period than what your regular walking regimen would actually take.
Since a little high impact routine is included in interval walking, make sure that you consult with your
doctor before adding this to your workout repertoire if you have a heart or some other medical
condition. Also, wear comfortable clothing and well fitting shoes before you go out to walk. Don t

Social Reality And Its Effect On Self Image
The idea that humans internalize their cultures social norms to a degree at which these norms affect
their self image is a long debated argument among many social sciences. From psychology to history,
the idea of socialization has sprung a diverse variety of theories, all proclaiming that their theory is the
answer. All of these social theories provoke questions about social reality. Social reality is a complex
evaluation of what is considered biological reality and what is considered individual cognitive reality.
These realities are created by social interaction thus influencing individual motives and actions, so
how can one theory answer it all. Dennis H. Wrong (1961), an American sociologist and professor of
sociology at New York University, suggests that much like the question of social reality the answer is
complex thus no single theory can correctly affiliate with all the problems surrounding social reality.
Wrong s (1961) reflection on the one sided answer of social reality is argued in his work published by
the American Sociological Review, titled The Over socialization Conception of Man in Modern
Sociology. Wrong states Sociological theory originates in the asking of general questions about man
and society. The answers lose their meaning if they are elaborated without reference to the question, as
has been the case (Wrong 1961:183) Wrong later supports his claim by critiquing two of the leading
theories on socialization, the Freudian view of man and the Hobbesian

The Impact of North American Writers on United States Citizens
When we ask ourselves what makes us American, we must look to our past. As a United States settler,

To begin with, the Star Spangled Banner (Key 433) is the national anthem of the United States of

Cinema gives a powerful environment in which to advertise. The film being shown virtually identifies
the target audience and makes it very easy to schedule and buy advertising spots to match brand
message to potential consumers. Better still, the audience is completely captive and in a receptive
frame of mind as they wait to be entertained. A well organized media plan based closely around the
films being shown can be a highly effective way of communicating brand messages to a willing
audience. In film advertising is very much alive and kicking.
Hence we have formulated the following hypothesis:

The past four to five years has seen an tremendous increase, in the use of in film advertising. Movies

And also, if ever it is not converting the prospective customers into customers, what is the reason
behind it s failure?

In order to begin understanding Syria is important to take time to know the early history. For the
Syrians history represents the events that leaded to their identity, as they know it and the rest of the
world see it. Those past events shaped the interaction with its border neighbors and the rest of the
world today. Their patterns of life, how they educate citizens and practice of the religion that has been
pass generation to generation, has been portrayed on Syria s history.
From the earliest times until present, Syria has presented a connection between Turkey, Iraq, Jordan,
Israel and Lebanon by its geographical location. This made this country a strategic location for
substantial trades and to influence over the other regional civilizations in the past and present.
Important caravan links and cities lay along the dessert of the country. Tadmor, Damascus also known

Lincoln Medical Supply Case Study
Running Head: LINCOLN MEDICAL SUPPLY Case: Lincoln Medical Supply 1.Identify the sources
of internal and external data for all three (3) types of customers. In order to develop database for each
type of customer, Sara can collect internal and external data for all three types of customers from the
inside and outside sources. Retail walk in buyers: As stated in the case, the main source of data of
retail customers is the insurance forms as many of the retail walk in buyers buy products that are
covered in their insurance plan. The data entries regarding the products purchased through insurance
can be use and hard copies of the forms signed by the retailers can be helpful as well. Similarly, sales
ticket invoices of the retailers that bought equipments can be use to include the details of customers
who purchased on cash. Physician s offices: External data for this type of customers can be obtained
from physicians that buy equipments; this data can be access to find out what type of referrals they
give to patients. However, effort is needed in order to get this information; request should be sent to
the physician s staff to provide statistics on the number of patients, the referrals and expenditures.
Along with this, internal records can also be used to counter check the equipments that were purchase
by the physicians. Hospitals: Hospitals that order the big ticket items can be reviewed through internal
company reports, to find out which products and equipments were

Best Post ( 1 Point )
1. Best Post (1 point) This article is relevant because it talks about how Hollywood films are changing
as studios begin to make films that don t just target the US audience, but also the international
audience, specifically from countries with emerging markets. According to the article, studio
executives will only approve a movie if there are potential overseas ticket sales. Hollywood would go
out of its way to appeal and to not offend global markets. For example, for the Chinese version of Iron
Man 3 Disney/Marvel actually created a subplot that involves Chinese characters in order to connect
with the Chinese audience. Because Hollywood films are focusing on appealing to the audience across
the globe, the storytelling of recent movies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Best Post Analysis (2 points) I feel that post is my best post because I think I did a good job in
picking an interesting article and explaining how the article I picked is relevant and relatable to Week
7 s topic/lecture about US film industry, particularly Contemporary Hollywood. Although some of the
stuff the article points out are quite obvious, as part of the target audience of the film industry, we (I)
do not usually pay much attention to the smaller subtle things. For example, how the supporting cast is
becoming more and more diverse or how as the storylines of blockbuster films are becoming less
sophisticated, appealing to such a diverse audience as the global audience is actually very challenging.
Aside from grammar, I feel like I need to expand more about how and why I think the article is
relevant to the topic of the week. Because I did not want my post to be too long, I omitted some
interesting points I found in the article. I plan to add them in my revision post because they reinforce
the fact Contemporary Hollywood is transforming into Global Hollywood. 3. Rewritten Best Posting
(4 points) This article is relevant to this week s topic because it reinforces and highlights the important
fact that Hollywood is no longer an American or Western exclusive industry. In fact, the Hollywood of
today is practically Global Hollywood.

The Themes In The Shawl By Cynthia Othick
The Short Story named The Shawl by Cynthia Othick narrates the survival of a mother, daughter and a
niece, during the Holocaust, them being in a concentration camp and participating in death marches. It
fits the theme of survival of the fittest as the daughter, named Magda, was forced to adapt to her needs
after the mother was not able to do it. Stella, the niece, is a third wheel in the story, she is most of the
time ignored by Rosa as she fully concentrates in taking care of Magda, or at least attempting to, and
Stella is just left their as somewhat of filling character. The obscurity of Stella is also stated by the
author when she says Stella, cold, cold, the coldness of hell (1980) Cynthia Othick, with this
information it can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

She sucked and sucked, flooding the threads with wetness. The shawl s good flavor, milk of linen.

Unbroken Film Techniques
Unbroken is unfinished
Based on Laura Hillenbrand s 2010 best seller, the film Unbroken is an inspiring, three time Oscar
nominated, World War II biography that tells the story of a young man, Louis Zamperini (played by
Jack O Connell), enduring the unimaginable brutalities of war. Directed by Angelina Jolie and
produced by Erwin Stoff, this film is a story of survival, resilience, and redemption. Although this
movie has some tear jerking moments and a few memorable quotes, it seems to have fallen flat when
it comes to the emotional aspect of the lead character s experience. The film starts off with the former
Olympic athlete aboard a B 24 bomber plane in the middle of an air battle alongside multiple other
unknown soldiers. Here, in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although many may assume that this was difficult for both friends, there was only a brief moment of
panic between the two that expressed how hard being separated was. The director very quickly moved
on to the next scene, putting little to no emphasis on the emotional tribulation they both just faced.
Moments throughout the rest of the movie also fail to connect with the viewer on an emotional level.
During the days that Zamperini spent at the POW camps, he was particularly tortured by the sadistic
prison guard, Mutsuhiro Watanabe (played by Japanese musician Miyavi). After being punched in the
face by every prisoner at the camp and running races against the prison guards for their amusement,
one can only imagine the pain Zamperini was in. The extensive, lengthy scenes of his torture make the
extremities of his abuse clear, but they do not give the viewer clear insight as to what Zamperini was
feeling, as they should. More importantly, though, this film left everyone wondering how in the world
this man literally rolled with the punches and endured through a time where most people very easily
gave

  • 2. English Essay on Uncle Tungsten How Passion Drives the Romance for Science in the essay Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks Oliver Sacks is a neurologist who is also known for being a storyteller ¹. Aside from his career, Sacks is a best selling author having written twelve books up to date, all bringing together science and art ². One of his earlier pieces is his essay Uncle Tungsten which combines passion and the love for science. Uncle Tungsten is an essay that shows how passion drives the romance for science, romance being the strong fascination and enthusiasm for science, a love affair . Oliver Sacks uses narration to present the idea of romance for science through characters, the concept of a hero, and an ending that provides a lesson learned. Sacks ... Not only did Scheele s discoveries make him a hero for Dave, but also his dedication to his work without wanting the fame and money. Sacks s use of a hero also demonstrates an example of how passion drives romance for science Scheele epitomized for me the romance of science (Sacks 219). Scheele was wholly dedicated to his single passion, chemistry (Sacks 219) which shows his strong, lifelong fascination and enthusiasm for chemistry presenting Sack s idea of romance for science. Narrative essays typically end with some kind of lesson learned ³, in addition to being a hero , Scheele also provides a lesson which leads oliver to discovering his own romance for science. Lessons generate a new knowledge or wisdom, which is commonly used to conclude a story and relates to the main point of the entire essay. Sack s uses this approach to conclude his essay in a narrative way while summing up his main idea of romance for science. Scheele was a hero for uncle Dave and also impressed Oliver with his generosity and discoveries which really had an impacts on Oliver s newfound love for chemistry. After learning about Scheele, Oliver had come to a conclusion that he wanted to be a chemist just like Scheele I wanted to be a chemist. A chemist like Scheele (Sacks 219). The lesson learned in ... • 3. Spielberg s Oskar Schindler As A Business Man One of the most emotional movies I ve ever seen. Spielberg has documented evil and made a moving tribute to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The story centers around the true story of Oskar Schindler, a war profiteer who paid to save the lives of Jews during the holocaust. The film presents Schindler as a business man, a womanizer, a profiteer, and a humanitarian. This contrasts allow for a beautiful character development. His interactions with Ralph Fiennes, who is very chilling as the commandant of the concentration camp Amon Goeth, shows him to be a man struggling with hypocrisy. He disapproves of Goeth s cold blooded murder and harsh treatment of the Jews, but he clearly enjoys Goeth s company. He has a hard time reconciling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction: Talent management is defined as the strategies and practices needed to identify, develop, attract and retain skilled workers of value to an organisation. (Rands 2009). It can be described as a holistic approach to the strategic management of the organisation s employees. At the top end of an organisation, the ability to make strategic decisions, react quickly to situations of ambiguity and keep the company focused during periods of intense pressure and change, is seen as crucial. At a time when the need for talented leaders and management is increasing rapidly, big companies are finding it increasingly difficult to attract the right kind of people. • 6. What Does Green Symbolize In The Great Gatsby A very powerful color that is shown right from the beginning of the novel is green. Throughout this story, green is used to represent wealth and true happiness. Typically, green is shown through Gatsby s character because of his great fortunes and desires. As stated by Berman, The Great Gatsby , Money, after all, has been only a means to express otherwise inchoate ideas (Berman n.d.). This is a very powerful quote in the sense that it describes a major theme in the novel; money cannot buy happiness. What truly matters is the amount of love and happiness in life. Fitzgerald often tries to portray the idea of quality over quantity through Gatsby and his green surroundings. Green is largely shown in the novel as a light at the end of Daisy s dock. Gatsby often stares at this light, and he references back to it often throughout the story. In the novel it says, ...and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock (Fitzgerald 21). This light represents Gatsby s love for Daisy. No matter how hard he tries, it appears that Daisy is simply out of reach. The light is literally his beacon of hope. Green sums up Gatsby and Daisy s love affair, including the way he uses his fortunes to try to impress her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was also a time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the different aspects of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing that it determined their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time period that are used for current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In particular, Giovanni Boccaccio s Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the religious culture during the 1350 s, which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional short stories gave people a different side of the story and how people truly regarded religion during this time. Currently, people who read these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious culture was back then and it gives a different thought process, seeing that while it is not particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious culture. Specifically, the story he tells us in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious culture of Italy during that time and how seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much that one man lived a horrid life and still managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried there. But because of the friendship it gave Max self confidence to yell and stand up to his dad. Another example is when Loretta, a side character in the novel, tried to help Max escape his dad. Loretta was considered to be the Heroic Biker Babe after she suffered a neck injury while helping Max escape. This showed how much she changed because she was considered to be a bad lady or evil. Finally another person that changed in the book was Freak, he went from a know it all child to a young caring person. This is one of the most famous statement of de Beauvoir. She argues that a woman is not born fragile, passive, or secondary; she is forced by her environment and the society to become so. A woman learns her role from her circumstance. She is not born shy, gentle, or passive, but is gradually shaped in that way by her upbringing. I agree with de Beauvoir s argument. There are a lot of criticism on this topic. Many people argue that men are biologically stronger, and are risk takers. They claim women focus more on emotions. I do agree that men and women are physically different. Men, on average, have greater muscle mass and denser bones. Men tend to be taller, and have weigh more than women, in general. However, it has nothing to do with strength. Many women lift weights and train hard nowadays. Those women will be able to do any sort of physical activity like men do. Women s bodies are capable to attaining the strength that a man s body can. Now, one might argue women have to train to be strong, but men are naturally strong. This argument is not valid because women are not given a chance to use their strength since a young age. Whenever there is a need to lift, shift or move heavy things, men are asked to do so. Girls from a young age learns that it is not her job to lift things, so she does not care about strengthening herself. Therefore, feminine and masculine characteristics and behavior that are not tied to biology but instead originate from the culture specific perception, treatment of what sex you are and should be. • 11. Developing Critical Thinking Skills Is A Duty Of All Teachers Developing critical thinking skills is a duty of all teachers; and if teachers fail to use learning opportunities and produce a learning environment that fosters critical thinking, they are failing their students. Critical thinking allows students to see things from different perspectives in an unbiased way. It also encourages students to think for themselves and to question things. Finally, it teaches students that learning is fluid and builds upon itself. Learning to think critically takes time; and teachers can use questions, cooperative learning, and feedback to help students develop this important skill that they will use all of their lives. Professional Knowledge Base One way that teachers can develop critical thinking in students is by asking questions (Barell, 2003). Questioning makes students look at things from different perspectives (Clark Whitney, 2009). According to a recent study by Clark and Whitney (2009), Seeing things from different perspectives allows students to see things as if they are walking in their shoes (p. 530). This allows students to see the bigger picture. Students do not know everything about every single topic, so it gives others a chance to persuade students thinking. While listening to other s ideas, students must keep an open mind and think about the other person s background while considering the information they are providing (Beckham, 2001). 1 John 4:1 says, Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the ... This caused tensions between the two countries that would bleed over to the commencement of the Korean War and aggravated Cold War relation between the world s two superpowers. The Korean War had a profound effect on the Cold War. The USSR and U.S. provided a lot of support for North and South Korea during and after the war based on the agendas of Moscow and Washington. After World War II, with the divided of Germany and Korea, the Cold War had started. America backed by the United Nations wanted free governments in the world and the Soviet Union want to have control over the world under communist governments. The Soviets saw the United Nations as a threat in Europe and the same can be said for the Korean peninsula. Shakespeare shows in the play his highly political admiration for Henry V, who leaps from success to successes. Henry V has completed the transformation from the young prince into a responsible one. As the play opens, the Bishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Ely discuss how much King Henry V has changed: Canterbury: The King is full of grace and fair regard. Ely: And a true lover of the holy church. Canterbury: The courses of his youth promised it not. The breath no sooner left his father s body, but that this wildness, mortified in him, seemed to die too. Yea, at the very moment consideration Like an angel, came, and whipped the offending Adam out of him, leaving his body as a paradise (I, I,22 30) Henry V became a great leader and outdoes in his duties: Canterbury: Hear him debate of commonwealth affairs, you would say it hath been all in all his study. Daisy Miller is a complex short story with many underlying themes such as appearance versus reality, knowledge versus innocence, outward action versus inward meditation, and Nature versus urbanity. In this short story, one is left to judge whether Daisy Miller, the main character of the story, is a pretty American flirt or a misunderstood, modern young woman. By probing into the complexities and contradictions of Daisy s character, it is obvious that Ms. Miller is merely a misunderstood young woman. He decides a pretty American flirt would be acceptable for him to know. Mainly he wants an excuse to spend time with her. His desire for her to be innocent and undesigning reflects not only on her true personality but also on his lust for her. Mrs. Costello s character symbolizes old money and culture, even though she is American, and thus sets up a stark contrast to Daisy Miller, a character devoid of much ritual or formality. Mrs. Costello had lived much of her life in Europe and had kept a society so intentionally exclusive in America that she has separated herself from any of the qualities associated with the innocence and natural spontaneity of an American. She believes the Miller s to be common and tells Winterbourne to stay away from them. However, Daisy represents to Winterbourne what he lacks, standing as a metaphor of what all of Europe lacks, as long as Daisy does not go too far with her social freedom. Winterbourne is largely blinded to the honesty and innocence that Daisy imparts because he has trouble recognizing a manner that has become foreign to him. Thus when Daisy walks calmly along with both Giovanelli and Winterbourne in the Pincio and does not seem anxious to get rid of Winterbourne, Winterbourne is perplexed (36 37). You could be stigmatized in many different ways such as how you look, if you are handicapped or not, or even if you are from a different ethnicity. Goffman defines three different primary typologies of stigma and they are: (1) abomination of the body, which means someone has physical disabilities, (2) Blemishes of individual character, meaning moral failing such as rapist, sex offender, and (3) tribal stigma, meaning your ethnical background and religion (Pontell, 2016, p. 96 97). I personally think that blemishes of individual character and tribal stigma are both useful in understanding the phenomenon of stigmatization, as both them play a key factor when someone is left out. But I strongly believe that blemishes in individual character play a huge role when it comes to stigmatization. I say this because now a days in a society if you are from a different ethnical background, it would not hold you back in some opportunity and in some places it would but it is not the same as it used to be back in the days. And as of individual who are handicapped are stigmatized because we assume that he/she might not be able to do the job and somewhere I think that individuals who are handicap might think the same for themselves and would be held back from opportunities. But if you have a blemish in your character, such as if you are labeled as rapist or sex offender, you are always going to be seen as a bad person. People around you are going to say hateful and mean things about you and sometime with these labels you will not get a job easily. And the reason is that the society is going to judge you and assume all the bad things you did, even though it might not have been that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Social Reality And Its Effect On Self Image The idea that humans internalize their cultures social norms to a degree at which these norms affect their self image is a long debated argument among many social sciences. From psychology to history, the idea of socialization has sprung a diverse variety of theories, all proclaiming that their theory is the answer. All of these social theories provoke questions about social reality. Social reality is a complex evaluation of what is considered biological reality and what is considered individual cognitive reality. These realities are created by social interaction thus influencing individual motives and actions, so how can one theory answer it all. Dennis H. Wrong (1961), an American sociologist and professor of sociology at New York University, suggests that much like the question of social reality the answer is complex thus no single theory can correctly affiliate with all the problems surrounding social reality. Wrong s (1961) reflection on the one sided answer of social reality is argued in his work published by the American Sociological Review, titled The Over socialization Conception of Man in Modern Sociology. Wrong states Sociological theory originates in the asking of general questions about man and society. The answers lose their meaning if they are elaborated without reference to the question, as has been the case (Wrong 1961:183) Wrong later supports his claim by critiquing two of the leading theories on socialization, the Freudian view of man and the Hobbesian ... For example, how the supporting cast is becoming more and more diverse or how as the storylines of blockbuster films are becoming less sophisticated, appealing to such a diverse audience as the global audience is actually very challenging. Aside from grammar, I feel like I need to expand more about how and why I think the article is relevant to the topic of the week. Because I did not want my post to be too long, I omitted some interesting points I found in the article. I plan to add them in my revision post because they reinforce the fact Contemporary Hollywood is transforming into Global Hollywood. 3. Rewritten Best Posting (4 points) This article is relevant to this week s topic because it reinforces and highlights the important fact that Hollywood is no longer an American or Western exclusive industry. In fact, the Hollywood of today is practically Global Hollywood. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Themes In The Shawl By Cynthia Othick The Short Story named The Shawl by Cynthia Othick narrates the survival of a mother, daughter and a niece, during the Holocaust, them being in a concentration camp and participating in death marches. It fits the theme of survival of the fittest as the daughter, named Magda, was forced to adapt to her needs after the mother was not able to do it. Stella, the niece, is a third wheel in the story, she is most of the time ignored by Rosa as she fully concentrates in taking care of Magda, or at least attempting to, and Stella is just left their as somewhat of filling character. The obscurity of Stella is also stated by the author when she says Stella, cold, cold, the coldness of hell (1980) Cynthia Othick, with this information it can be ... • 46. Unbroken Film Techniques Unbroken is unfinished Based on Laura Hillenbrand s 2010 best seller, the film Unbroken is an inspiring, three time Oscar nominated, World War II biography that tells the story of a young man, Louis Zamperini (played by Jack O Connell), enduring the unimaginable brutalities of war. Directed by Angelina Jolie and produced by Erwin Stoff, this film is a story of survival, resilience, and redemption. Although this movie has some tear jerking moments and a few memorable quotes, it seems to have fallen flat when it comes to the emotional aspect of the lead character s experience. The film starts off with the former Olympic athlete aboard a B 24 bomber plane in the middle of an air battle alongside multiple other unknown soldiers. Here, in the ... Although many may assume that this was difficult for both friends, there was only a brief moment of panic between the two that expressed how hard being separated was. The director very quickly moved on to the next scene, putting little to no emphasis on the emotional tribulation they both just faced. Moments throughout the rest of the movie also fail to connect with the viewer on an emotional level. During the days that Zamperini spent at the POW camps, he was particularly tortured by the sadistic prison guard, Mutsuhiro Watanabe (played by Japanese musician Miyavi). After being punched in the face by every prisoner at the camp and running races against the prison guards for their amusement, one can only imagine the pain Zamperini was in. The extensive, lengthy scenes of his torture make the extremities of his abuse clear, but they do not give the viewer clear insight as to what Zamperini was feeling, as they should. More importantly, though, this film left everyone wondering how in the world this man literally rolled with the punches and endured through a time where most people very easily gave ...
