Female Roles In Dystopian Literature
In a research done by Mcclantoc (2016), it can be deduced that the main ingredient of a good
dystopian literature are the main protagonists who induce some kind of social change in their
society or world. This applies regardless of the two types of dystopia; one that is apparent or in the
guise of a utopia. In dystopian literature, the main characters are the average person. They are
usually male characters. At the beginning of the story, they noticed the flaws in their society and
question or disagree with it. The characters are devised and carefully laid out that they eventually
show initiative to induce change in their society or world. Yet, the main female characterwho is
included in the story alongside the main character serves as a trigger or guide to initiate the main
character to make a change for their dystopic society or world. Despite how hard the female
character provides aid to the main male character, she does not rise to be in the spotlight in the
story. The theory by Gottelieb (2001) observed the criterion of how the female protagonistis viewed
and portrayed in dystopian literature. The theory mocked the existence of the female characters in
the story. It seems that these female characters only have two tasks in their story. They serve as the
trigger to directly or indirectly start the main character s initiative; to only step aside later and let
the male hero take over and bring victory.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dystopian literature is becoming one of the most popular genre among young adult (YA) literature.
Gradually, more female main characters emerged and take over the role of the main male
protagonist. This is when Linh Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles comes in, serving as a good
example of a female protagonist, setting a new set of parameters for the new protagonists of

The Relationship Between The Sat Scores And Family Income...
IB Math SL Internal Assessment: What is the relationship between the SAT scores and family
income of candidates around the world? By: Rahul Suresh What is the relationship between the
SAT scores and family income of candidates around the world? Introduction: The SAT is a
standardized test widely used for college and university admissions in the United States. It was
first introduced in 1926, and its name and scoring system have changed several times throughout
the years. Many students around the world that want to pursue post secondary institutions in the
US make it a point to write the SAT at least once in their high school career to better their chances
of getting a higher score. This test has three parts to it one reading, writing and one math. In
order to achieve the best score that they can possibly get and be placed in the highest possible
percentile, students may decide to attend SAT preparation classes starting from the early years of
High/Middle School. The unfortunate reality of these extra preparation courses is that they are
quite expensive, and due to this, they mostly cater towards to higher or higher middle class
families. Courses that provide extra preparation such as Ivy Global are not very affordable to
many families and so students. According to many statistics and news reports, the higher the test
taker s family income, the higher their scores in the test. This has been a topic of great controversy
as we have grown in the modern society

Rogers Chocolates in 2007
Problem Statement Rogers Chocolates is not using its core competency of strong retail sales
ability and its distinctive competency of producing a wide variety of high quality, hand wrapped
chocolates to attract a sufficient market niche of worldwide tourists and high income, middle aged
couples that are mainly empty nested or child free, so that they can maximize their market share
and profit volumes in a rapidly growing market in which globalization, productinnovation toward a
more health conscious product, and growing buyer preferences are major driving forces. Their
tremendous ability in retail sales, in which their 11 stores accounted for 50% of total sales, and
financial leverage have not been utilized to expand Rogers to profit... Show more content on

Next priority is the online and mail order purchasers as the low cost of sales and high reorder rate
created high profit were a great way of attracting global markets without spending large amounts of
capital to expand. Wholesalers would come next as they contribute 30% of total sales and margins
are not as high as retail sales.
5. Since Rogers has great credit worthiness and a great borrowing capacity, they could improve
their CSR image by using that capacity to acquire its supplier and provide them with organic
and fair trade capabilities as well as increase manufacturing technologies. Not only will this help
give Rogers a better social responsibility image, it will allow Rogers to expand their product
varieties and qualities even further to adapt to the emerging needs of health driven chocaholics .
By creating a wider variety of products, retail, wholesale, and online outlets will be able to
satisfy more consumers, thus increasing market share. A 2007 online study conducted by Image

dramatically; virtually 100% of those surveyed express some desire for greener practices, up
from 58% a year ago (Kuhn). It also states Endangered Species Chocolates growth in the past year

Executive Salaries And What It Means To The United States...
Executive Salaries and What it Means to our Economy
The economy of the United States is by far the largest and most powerful economy in the entire
world. The average family income is roughly $40,000 a year and our GDP (Gross Domestic
Product) is well over 10 trillion dollars. The next closest country is Japan with 4 trillion dollars of
total GDP.(Johnson Wales: Economics) The United States has so many large corporations it takes
someone to run each one and it also take a lot of money to pay someone to be in charge of each
one. Top companies in the United States range from automobile manufacturers to household

Directors have awarded compensation packages that go well beyond what is required to attract
and hold on to executives and have rewarded even poorly performing executives. These executive
pay excesses come at the expense of shareholders as well as the company and its employees.
Furthermore, a poorly designed executive compensation package can reward decisions that are not
in the long term interests of a company. Excessive CEO pay is essentially a corporate
governance problem. When CEOs have too much power in the boardroom, they are able to
extract what economists call economic rents from shareholders (Economic rent is distinct from
economic profit, which is the difference between a firm s revenues and the opportunity cost of its
inputs). The board of directors is supposed to protect shareholder interests and minimize these
costs. At approximately two thirds of US companies, the CEO sits as the board s chair. When one
single person serves as both chair and CEO, it is impossible to objectively monitor and evaluate
his or her own performance. What can be done about this? The best thing that can happen to let
shareholders know about CEO executive pay excesses is to let it come to light. Companies are
required to file documents describing their executives compensation with the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC); these often are

The Theories of Emile Durkkheim Essay
The Theories of Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim also referred to as The Father of Sociology (Thio, 2002), played a critical role in
establishing theories based on Social Facts (Thio, 2002) He is best known for his views of social
reality ( Thio, 2002) and their ties into how a society works. He was said to be a sociologist who
played an important part in the development of structural functionalism (Thio, 2002), and sociology
as a whole. His four major studies, or publications, have assured him a place in the history of
sociology s intellectual development (Thompson, 2002). The following contents will discuss

studies he required to get into this elite school (The Biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000)). After
two attempts for the entrance exam he was finally accepted in 1879 (The biography of Emile

interdependent parts (Thompson, 2002). His only concern was defying the conditions of existence

A Classroom At An American Public School
A typical classroom in an American public school holds a group of students with a myriad of
diverse learning needs. Each class is likely to consist of some visual learners, some auditory
learners, and some hands on learners. Some students may work best in groups, while others work
best independently. Some students may do well with mathematics and logic but poorly with visual
spatial skills, or any combination of the multiple intelligences. It seems to be common knowledge
among teachers that these needs must be met, and in turn teachers write and teach a wide variety
of lessons to accommodate all of their students, and there are a wide variety of resources available
to teachers to help them do so. It is important to note, however, that... Show more content on

Whether these students are spending a small portion of the day or the entire day in the classroom,
teachers should take care to address the needs of these students as best they can. While there is
always room for improvement with how these students are included in the class, the American
public school system has come a long way. In order to best understand inclusion of students with
significant learning needs in a public school classroom and the progress that has been made, it is
important to have a solid understanding of the history of public education in the United States, and
the progress that has been made.
The history of public education in America starts with the Puritans in the 1600s in New England.
At this time, the primary goal of education was to teach children to read and understand the Bible
in order to ward off Satan. The first act that mandated education was the Massachusetts Act of
1642 that required parents to be sure that their children knew the principles of religion and the
capital laws of the commonwealth (Matzat, 2009). A notable point about this act is that it did not
really address school at all, only stating that parents were responsible for the education of their
children. The idea behind this was that if all citizens understood laws and scripture, they would in
turn abide by those laws. In 1647, the Old Deluder Satan Act was established, creating the
foundation of public education as we know it today (Matzat, 2009). This act required

Public Shaming In The Scarlet Letter
Should Public Shaming be left in the Past? Wahh, Wahh, Wahh. Christina is crying as a result of
public humiliation. Public humiliation can hurt someone long term. In The Price of Public Shame
Monica Lewinski was hurt badly by public shaming, and she did not know if she could fight the
constant threats to her. Also, in Is the Internet a Mob without Consequence? Someone tweeted
something bad and in just a couple hours the responses to the tweet was very harsh. Finally in, The
Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne made a mistake and she got publically humiliated for one mistake
that she made. This one mistake ruined her life. Because public shaming can ruin someone s life
for one little mistake they made, it should be left in the past due to the lack of a social life, and
potentially ruining their professional life.
The first component of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humiliation can cause someone to feel lonely, and as a result of this will make that person have
the feeling that no one wants to be there friend. When someone is humiliated that person does
not want to show their face in public, which is a reason why they lack a social life. As stated in ,
The Scarlet Letter, it states, Measured by the prisoner s experience, however, it might reckoned
a journey of some length; for, haughty as her demeanor was, she perchance underwent an agony
from every footstep of those that thronged to see her, as if her heart had been flung in the street
for them all to spurn and trample upon. This quote means that Hester is walking through the
streets of her town and no one is saying anything to her or making eye contact with her at all.
She is being completely shunned for one mistake that she had made. This must make Hester feel
very sorrowful that no one is talking to her. That indicated that public shaming can lead to the
absence of a social life because no one is talking to Hester at all because of what she did. Also,

input or retrieval of the data would be required, as the student can then access the data and
retrieve it from a school computer for use. The compatibility of a wide range of devices
connected to the network needs to be taken into consideration due to the broad range of operating
systems, application software and file management systems available. For instance, a word
processed document generated on a MacBook laptop running a variant of Mac OS X would need
to be compatible with word processing applications used on the school network system that runs on
MicrosoftWindows. In the event which it is not, the file would need to be converted into a
compatible file type in order to be accessed on school devices. Access to a file management
system that is linked to the student s school login would also be crucial, as the documents can
then be manipulated, whether they are uploaded, retrieved or stored. This offers the student a
wide range of options in which they can access their own files, as well as many forms of shared
information placed on the system that include school research resources. The usage of cloud
services such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive would need to be universal for all platforms
connected to the server for file management.

The Significant Role of Women in Joseph Conrad s Heart of...
In the 1900s novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the protagonist often encounters
women at landmarks of his life. Charlie Marlow is a sailor and imperialist who sets out along
the Congo River to civilize the savages. The novella begins with a crew on the Thames waiting
for the tides to change. During their wait, a character named Marlow tells of his exploits on the
African continent. In his recounted travels, Marlow meets other imperialists such as Mr. Kurtz, a
man who is obsessed with the pursuit of ivory and riches. Like Mr. Kurtz, Marlow embarks across
the African continent in hopes of earning both money and respect. One early critic of the novel,
Edward Garnett, wrote in his review that [Heart of Darkness] is simply a... Show more content on

Women are viewed by Marlow as ignorant little creatures above the press of imperialism completely
innocent, but entirely unaware.
Africa is written as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as human factor. Africa as a
metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European
enters at his peril (Achebe). Thus Conrad brings the savages of Africa and general women
together. Marlow brings the two victims of imperialism together in one, brief observation of Mr.
Kurtz s foreign mistress. Conrad s concise description of an Amazonian woman on page 56 is as
follows:
...She was savage and superb, wild eyed and magnificent; there was something ominous and stately
in her deliberate progress...
Her long shadow fell to the water s edge. Her face had a tragic and fierce aspect of wild sorrow and
of dumb pain mingled with the fear of some struggling, half shaped resolve. She stood looking at
us without a stir, and like the wilderness itself, with an air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose...
Women and the savages are brought together under one umbrella of mingled patronization and
awe. In this respect, Marlow s view of women is the perfect oxymoron (Nadelhaft). Marlow s tone
concerning women and the Amazon is reverent, but belittling. These two groups of people are sub
human to Marlow in that he considers them of a lesser intellect and lesser value.

My Experience At Bluefield State College
The world consists of many different cultures and ethnicities. One of the bests things about living
in America is getting to see almost every difference first hand even if you do live in Princeton,
WV. I didn t see as many cultural differences until I started to attend college at Bluefield State
College. But that isn t where I met Eduardo Henrique Pereira. We met playing soccer on my old
high schools soccer field one sunny afternoon. He is from San Paulo, Brazil and currently attends
Princeton Senior High School. He is only seven teen years old and has been in America for only
nine months. I was very eager to find out what his hobbies and interests are and just how different
Brazil was from America.
The first topic discussed was holidays. We first talked about how he celebrates Christmas Day.
He said that they all would wake up and eat breakfast together first thing that morning. They
would then visit and begin making lunch shortly after. They made rice, black beans, chicken,
cakes, candies, and would have it with wine. At first when I heard wine I was a bit thrown off
guard, but he explained that the drinking age is eighteen unlike America where it is twenty one. He
then proceeded with telling me that around eight at night they would all sit around the tree and one
person will be designated to get the presents under the tree and call out the name that was on the
present much like we do here in America. I too get up and have breakfast with my family Christmas

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Gentrification
Gentrification is a planned or unplanned process where wealthy individuals displace poor
individuals from their areas of living by purchasing the property and later upgrading it through
modernization and renovation (Brown Saracino, 2013). Ruth Glass coined the term Gentrification
in her book London: Aspects of Change in reference to the influx of wealthy individuals to poorly
inhabited areas in central London in 1964 (Brown Saracino, 2013). These rich individuals were
referred to as gentryhence the term gentrification.
Gentrification has been a controversial issue both in urban planning and politics primarily due to
the displacement of poor people by the rich folks (Shaw Hagemans, 2015). Many individuals
have viewed gentrification as an illegal act that should be avoided at all costs. On the other hand,
another group of people believe that gentrification is the way forward to promoting growth and
development. With such contrasting ideas, this paper is going to take a look at gentrification from
a positive and negative perspective, its effects, and how it can be prevented or contained. Apart
from this, the paper will also address the following questions.
What is the societal, public health, and economic impact of gentrification?
Does gentrification play a role in racial segregation?
Body
As a process, gentrification has had both a negative and positive impact on the society as well as
affected the economic status of the involved countries or towns. As a way

Chicken Pox Papers
ChickenPox
Chickenpox is a viral sickness which is characterized by red, itchy spots on the skin. It is one of
the most common infectious diseases in childhood. In children it is usually mild, however there
can be complications. When a person has chickenpox they are usually unlikely to get it after that,
but the virus remains in the body and can later cause shingles. There are a number of ways to get
shingles, and it is usually very obvious when a child has the virus. However, it is essential to seek
medical attention when the symptoms of chickenpox arise and get proper treatment.
Chickenpox is caused by the herpes virus varicella zoster and is particularly common in children
under the age of twelve ( Chickenpox ). It can be spread by contact with clothing, bed linens, and
oozing blisters, or droplets from a sneeze or cough. After being exposed, symptoms will arise
from 10 21 days after. The child is contagious 1 2 day before the rash appears, all the way until
the rash in entirely dry and scabbed over ( Children s and Parenting Health Centre ). Because

packaged FMCG products. This research utilized a focus group methodology to understand
consumer behavior toward such products. The challenge for researchers is to integrate packaging
into an effective purchasing decision model, by understanding Consumer s behavior towards the
packaging of FMCG products. When consumers search for and process information in store, the
product s package can contain relevant and useful information for the consumer. Product packaging
forms the end of the promotion chain and is close in time to the actual purchase and may therefore...

Malcolm X Essay
February 21, 1965. A man in Manhattan s Audubon Ballroom was shot 15 times by 3 gun men
associated with the Nation of Islam. Who was this man? Malcolm X, an 8th grade drop with a
dead dad and a mentally unstable mom who started with a life of crime, but after learning about
Islam, had a new outlook on things. An Ironic quote from Malcolm Xis [If you re not ready to die

all laws. The President works with Congress to administer laws. The second branch of government
includes the Legislative branch, also known as Congress. The Legislative Branch includes the

The Repeated Failure of the League of Nations in Keeping Peace
The League of Nations repeatedly failed in keeping the peace because, first of all Hitler went
against the Treaty of Versailles and started World War 2 yet the League of Nations failed to
react. The Treaty of Versailles also failed because Mussolini in Abyssinia went against the league
and Manchuria also contributed towards the failure to keep the peace. The structure of the league
didnГ‚ t help as the council only met once a year. The power of the league was very weak as there
was no military force. Finally the lack of strong nations joining the league contributed to the failure
of the League of Nations.

The League of Nations also failed because Mussolini, a dictator from Italy, prepared to invade
Abyssinia. Abyssinia then asked the League for help; while the League of Nations talked to
Mussolini he used the time to send an army into Africa. The League of Nations then suggested
giving Abyssinia to Italy. Mussolini ignored the League of Nations and invaded Abyssinia. In
secret however Britain and France agreed to give Abyssinia to Italy, the Hoare Laval Pact.
Manchuria became a factor or the failure of the League of Nations in 1932 when the Japanese
army invaded Manchuria and threw out the Chinese residents. They then set up their own
government called the Г‚ ManchoukuoГ‚ . When china asked the League of Nations for help it
sent a group of officials led by Lord Lytton to study the problem, this however took a year, but in
February 1933 they ordered Japan to leave Manchuria.
However Japan refused to leave Manchuria and instead left the League of Nations. As many
countries had important trading links with Japan the League of Nations couldnГ‚ t agree on
sanctions or even ban weapon sales. Britain and France didnГ‚ t want a war therefore nothing was
done. This showed the League of Nations as weak and powerless therefore adding to the failures
and breakdown of the League of Nations.

Extremes differ around the world but for fact in developed and developing countries the amount
of women living in poverty is adamant. Looking at the developing countries Canada and India
provides different ways of looking at poverty and how poverty is identified. Through Canada
women deal with poverty when their income is below the poverty line or they are using over
half of their income on necessities to live. In India women are encountering human poverty,
which is being without basic needs creating factors such as illiteracy, malnutrition, early death,
poor health care and no access to clean water. Despite some differences between the two
countries economies, women in both Canada and India face similar issues with poverty The
poverty of women in Canada and India is increasing as a result of globalization, social policies
that neglect women, inequality in employment, and existing gender based social repression
(Argiropoulos and Rajagopal 2003:612). The inequality of employment is a major cause of
poverty, once women have to enter the workforce an increase in feminization in the workforce has

JRR Tolkien and the Twentieth Century Essay
The early twentieth century saw an upheaval of normal life in Europe because of the Great War
and the changing political and social systems. In the midst of this time, JRR Tolkien found
himself transformed from a young student at Oxford to a soldier in the British army as war broke
out across the continent. This war affected his life deeply, whether indirectly while he was at
Oxford or through his time in the trenches in direct combat. As a dedicated academic, however,
Tolkien never abandoned his passion for languages and mythology but used his experiences to
bolster his own writings and creative pursuits. One of the largest influences on Tolkien s life was

Secondly, this extensive time and companionship with only men is clearly seen in the relationships
in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, never exposed to colleagues who were women, only formed
strong ties with other men in the academics that dominated his life. Throughout Tolkien s trilogy,
a reader finds few strong female characters, but a great emphasis on lasting male companionship.
Examples such as Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, Sam and Frodo, and Merry and Pippin
demonstrate friendships that were not stopped by borders or any challenge of life. Moreover,
Tolkien s friends were primarily occupied with talking, drinking, smoking, and walking all
characteristic activities of the hobbits of Middle Earth. Even before he was seriously
developing the trilogy that would create a new genre of literature, he gathered experiences that
would be models for his created world. Once the Great War began, Tolkien described it as a
collapse of all my world. Even Oxford, the place he had always depended on to stay safely
hidden in his studies, had been breached. Refugees flooded in to use the space, quickly draining
of young men eager to fight, as a camp for safety and other war readiness efforts. Tolkien avoided
the 1915 draft for as long as he could manage because he was recently engaged, but was sent to
fight in northern France within a few months. Tolkien was not in combat for long; after several
months he came down with trench fever from lice in his clothing passing

Car Pollution Essay
The words pollution and automobile are synonymous, and as long as vehicles still use fossil fuels to
run, that won t change. Consumers, communities, and the environment are key stakeholders the
auto industry has to consider when it comes to pollution. More energy efficient, hybrid or electric
vehicles can increase customer satisfaction and add to the company s business performance. For
instance, fuel consumption is an assumption of performance and is very important for consumers.
Thus, automotive companies have to come up with great designs with minimal consumption of
resources and raw materials; engines that give more mileage and less fuel consumption. Given that
consumers are the most important stakeholders, communities of these consumers also want
vehicles with the lowest emissions possible with hopes of keeping the air around them clean and
healthy. Once again, these informal bands and communities of consumers have large amounts of
power based on buying power alone, and can significantly impact an automobilecompany s
business.
A vehicle s environmental impact can be easily measured through miles per gallon and measures of
emissions. In 2011, President Barrack Obama and automobile companies agreed to raise fuel
efficiency standards to meet an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. This will lead to more
fuel efficient vehicles that will consume less gas, thus burning less fuel and emitting fewer
emissions into the air. Also, according to the Obama administration, this

Objective:
We will determine the acceleration of the weights of an Atwood s Machine, both experimentally
and theoretically. We will attempt to verify Newton s Second law which is a mathematical
statement relating force, mass, and acceleration. Newton s Second law states that acceleration, a, is
directly related to net force, F, and inversely related to mass, m. Naturally this give F=ma. Using
the Atwood s Machine experimental acceleration data (for 10 different runs with 10 different
combinations of masses) will be gathered and compared to the theoretical acceleration which is
predicted by Newton s Second Law using a modified version of F=ma. The only two variables in

The inversely proportional relationship between total mass and acceleration is also shown in
our graph. I took the liberty of plotting the non constant mass by F vs. aexp. Which clearly
showed that with an increase in total mass resulted in a gradual decrease of the acceleration of
the system. There were several sources of error in our experiment. But none affected the ability
for a relationship between mass, acceleration, force to be drawn. The largest error was the one
mentioned above. But its source was the easiest to account for. We mis imputed the value of the
spoke length into DataStudio. Luckley this mistake was easily remedied due to the design of
the pulley. The electronic eye was recording a time that was exactly half of what it should have
been. This time data produced an acceleration that was exactly double what it should be.
Therefore this was issue was easily remedied by dividing the times by 2. Other sources of error
were due to the frictional forces in the pulley system, also the masses of the weights might not
have been perfect. Air resistance was a major player when the difference in masses was large,
therefore acceleration was high. The weights could have been verified to eliminate that error, and
more advanced physics could have been used to take into account the friction of the pulley and the
air resistance.

Sttoicism In Socrates
Socrates lived his life instructing others on how best to live virtuously. In order to do this, he
exhibited several unwaverable beliefs and actions that defined his life as a philosopher. Epictetus s
text The Enchiridion also attempts to instruct readers on how live a life of virtue. This branch of
philosophy is labelled stoicism. Due to how well the actions expressed by Socratesand suggested by
Epictetus seem to align, a modern day examination of both The Enchiridion and several of Platos
texts written about Socrates could conclude that Socrates himself may be considered a stoic. In his

In line 47e of Crito, Socrates says to Crito that life is not worth living when the moral center of
the soul is corrupted, an aspect of humanity which is just as essential as the body. In passage 38
of Epictetus text, he suggests that the decision making center of the mind should be protected
like a shoe protects the foot, and that this will allow for safety in future actions. Both Epictetus
and Socrates express the belief that the soul or mind is just important as the body, and ought to
be protected and focused on above all else in order to better pursue one s purpose in life.
Furthermore, in line 44d, Socrates tells Crito that the majority cannot cause great acts of good or
evil, and that the greatest evil of all is straying from a virtuous path and deliberately causing
wrongdoing. In saying this Socrates is attempting to prove to Crito that the opinions of others do
not matter because they cannot truly cause harm. Epictetus mirrors this belief in passage 20. He
advises the reader that the only offense that can be taken to another s opinion is actually just
caused by one s own opinion of their insult. As soon as the importance of this opinion is
diminished, one can live freely and according to their own virtue without worry of harm from
others. Both philosophists share the idea that the feelings of others are inconsequential when

Socrates Death Argument Analysis

Socrates Death Arguments Socrates was an ancient philosopher set in Athens, Greece. Socrates,
being known for stirring up arguments amongst the city s wisest men, grew widely unpopular in the
community. This unpopularity, and many other troubles led Socratesto be accused and sentenced to
trial for corrupting the youth, and of not believing in the Gods of the city. During Socrates trial, he
brings up arguments about why we should not fear death, just as he does not. In this essay I will
cover Socrates two arguments about death, their inconsistencies, and explain why Socrates changed
his position about death towards the end of the trial. While Socrates is being held ... Show more

He starts to talk about how this penalty of death is actually a good thing for him, and he is not
angry for it. Socrates then clearly says that he has proof that death is good. He starts to say that
death is a blessing and there are either two different scenarios of death. The first scenario of
death is having no perception of anything at all and having your soul relocated, like a great
dreamless sleep, which in Socrates eyes is truly a blessing. The second is in which your soul is
relocated elsewhere, you are able to talk to others that have passed like great figures from the past.
The alleged inconstancy is clear between these two arguments. The first argument Socrates states
that he does not fear death because he has no clue what lies beyond. He cannot fear what he does
not know of. With both arguments he is very confident in what he is saying, especially with the
second argument claiming that he has proof that death is good. In the second argument Socrates
says that death can be two things and then proceeds to explain what death is. In that argument, by
stating what death is, he is clearly saying that he has some knowledge about death and is
completely contradicting his first

Dollar General Case Analysis
Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well known extreme value retailer, has an
established competitive advantage versus other consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It
would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis
an appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store
retail segment (original dollar stores, close out retailers, limited assortment grocers, and extreme
value retailers) all compete on price. Dollar Generalis very competitive in this regard, but this alone
has not rendered the company successful; price is not Dollar General s competitive advantage
amongst its competitors. Therefore, a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek
limited expansion within the continental United States (US extreme value industry still
growing at $1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to
this state only. Whereas development within the US had been the company s growth engine for
years, the company is now closing and remodeling stores with equal returns. As such, the
company s growth aims should be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme value markets are
well received, and stores with limited SKU s fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly,
store merchandise productivity could be enhanced by eliminating seasonal items (costumes,
summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery items. Research suggests that same store
growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis on fresh grocery items, and Dollar General
appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of perishables on hand. A slightly
larger store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of development, as Dollar General
seems to have slightly underestimated the sweet spot for its store size with the current store model.
The stores would remain small enough to facilitate accelerated shopping, but large enough to hold

According to Ajzen s (1991) theory models, behavior is depend to the behavioral intention. There
are three factors which influence the behavioral intention, which are the attitude towards behavior,
subjective norms and perceived behavior control. Attitudes are a complete mental state involving

Culture has many definitions, and it affects everything people do in their society because of their
ideas, values, attitudes, and normative or expected patterns of behaviour. Culture is not
genetically inherited, and cannot exist on its own, but is always shared by members of a society
(Hall 1976, p. 16). Hofstede (1980, pp. 21 23) defines culture as the collective programming of the
mind which distinguishes the members of one group from another , which is passed from
generation to generation, it is changing all the time because each generation adds something of its
own before passing it on. The social capital literature has shown that socially held beliefs can shape
not only collective actions but government and economic performance (North 1981; Knack and
Keefer, 1997; Landes, 1998; La Porta et al., 1999; Putnam, 1993). Indeed, La Porta et al. (1999:223)
argued that some societies are so intolerant or distrustful that their governments simply cannot

Predicting Life Expectancy
The quest to prolong our youth continues today, though not through lengthy field explorations, but
through improvements in health, nutrition, and medicine. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and
vaccinations can greatly improve an individual s life expectancy, while an outbreak of disease,
malnutrition, and social unrest can drastically lower an individual s life expectancy.
But how are life expectancies affected on a national level?
While these factors are central to living longer, they alone cannot be the only facets. The social and
economic conditions of each country will undoubtedly affect its citizens, their lifestyles and
decisions. Citizens of wealthier countries have access to modern medicine and medical facilities, the

Methodology
To determine the best model, I used the standard regression equation:
Y=О±+ ОІ1X1 +ОІ2X2+ОІ3X3+ ....+ ОІ6X6
I check that the data is independent and identically distributed with a mean that follows the
regression equation above, and a constant variance.
Using the F test and partial F test, I drop input variables from the model that do not provide much
additional information over the other variables. Finally, I determine a model that has only
significant variables and a reasonable R squared. R squared is a measure of how well the model
explains the response variable. For example, if R squared is 99%, then 99% of the variation in the
response variable can be explained by variation in the input variables.
Results
First, I regress Y on all of the input variables, which produces the following output:
Overall, this model does provide some information that can be used to

Late Medieval Religion
In our present day society, we consider anything that came before us as primitive. It is an
unfortunate stereotype that all peasants lived in small, dirty shacks and ate gruel while kings and
queens were in their lavish castles and gorging themselves with fine cuisine. Yet, one should not
discount the Late Medieval Period. Civilization evolved in several ways during this time and it is
often ignored as one of the most progressive times in all human history. In just the span of two
centuries, our modern lives were shaped by defining events such as the influence of religion and the
faith of its adherents being shaken and transformed because of internal strife. Moreover, Peasants
gained political power and riches through new economic opportunities,... Show more content on

Nearly half of the continental population had succumbed to one of the most unfortunate events that
struck. Europe suffered a massive drop in population because of several factors, not solely because
of the Bubonic Plague. Between 1315 and 1317, crop failures produce the greatest famine of the
Middle Ages, (Kagan 292). Factors such as malnutrition, overpopulation, economic instability, and
overall poor health were harming Europe years before the plague could take its turn at debilitating
the population that would recover at a snail s pace(Jones). The Bubonic Plague introduced itself to
Europe via trade ships that came from Asia. Going from major trade ports like Constantinople and
Sicily, the malady traveled to areas like Spain, France and northern Europe(Kagan). While the
cause of it might be known to us today, it was a mystery to those that were alive to witness the
carnage caused by the plague. Corruption, promiscuity, poisonous fumes and the Jewish people
were cast as scapegoats that brought on this disease(Kagan). Aromatics were thought to prevent the
smell of death from infecting people, so they became popular with those trying to evade the painful
illness. Help from God to end the pandemic was requested by the pious adherents with
supplications(Boccaccio). Even though the Bubonic Plague and Great Famine ended the lives of

Dilantin Synthesis Lab Report
Abstract Dilantin is an antiepileptic drug by acting on the nervous system and this lab synthesized
pure Dilantin through a multistep process. The first step involves using the coenzyme, thiamine, as
a catalyst to synthesize benzoin. Benzoin is oxidized to benzil using NH4NO3 to regenerate
amounts of cupric acetate, followed by reaction with urea in a base to yield Dilantin. Experimental
physical properties and spectral data were analyzed to show relatively pure Dilantin synthesized.
Introduction: The purpose of this multistep lab is to synthesize the drug Dilantin, which is part of
the hydantoins family of drugs well known for their effects on the nervous system to reduce
epileptic seizures.1 The synthesis will require three steps, starting... Show more content on

For benzil, the IR has sp3 C H, C=O and C=C aromatic stretch (Table 1) that correspond to the
literature6, however, there is also the presence of an O H peak that is not expected and is due to
the presence of unreacted benzoin. This helps to explain the low yield of Dilantin (20.9%)
because not all of the crude benzil would have reacted as some of it would have been benzoin.
The Dilantin was successfully synthesis as the final product showed N H, sp3 C H, C=O and
C=C aromatic stretches (Table 1) that correspond to the literature value6, but are less intense
explained by the low yield. To improve the yields of this multistep synthesis the procedure should
be modified to allow a longer reaction time to condense all of the benzaldehyde to benzoin in the
first step as 1.5 h is not sufficient as shown by the TLC. Furthermore, recrystallization should be
performed after each synthetic step as to remove impurities and potential side products that may

Essay about Descartes’ Cogito
Descartes Cogito It is the purpose of this essay to examine both Descartes Cogito argument and his
skepticism towards small and universal elements, as well as the implications these arguments have
on each other. First, I will summarize and explain the skepticism Descartes brings to bear on small
and universal elements in his first meditation. Second, I will summarize and explain the Cogito
argument, Descartes famous I think, therefore I am (it should be noted that this famous implication
is not actually something ever said or written by Descartes, but instead, an implication taken from
his argument for his own existence). Third, I will critique the line of reasoning underlying these
arguments. Descartes attacks... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes attacks the possibility of certainty with regards to the existence of small and universal
elements with the possibility of our thoughts being altered by an omnipotent deceiver. In
paragraph nine, he states, How do I know that he did not bring it about that there be no Earth at
all, no heavens, no extended thing, no figure, no size, no place, and yet all these things should
seem to me to exist precisely as they appear to do now. His point is that this omnipotent evil
deceiver could create in our minds an understanding of mathematics and logic that is at odds with
reality, causing us to construe everything wrongly. Thus Descartes ends this final and devastating
doubt with the preliminary conclusion that everything he perceives can be called into doubt.
Descartes answers his seemingly hopeless skepticism from the first meditation with the Cogito.
The basic point of his Cogito argument is that for me to either perceive awry, or even to doubt
my own existence, I must exist. It is, as Descartes says, I am, I exist is necessarily true every time
it is uttered by me or conceived in my mind (Med2, par3). He makes two arguments for the Cogito
in his second meditation. Descartes arrives at the Cogito through the notion of an omnipotent
deceiver actually. He starts to question his own

Effective Cold Sore Home Remedies
Effective Cold Sore Home Remedies
It may be your time to try cold sore home remedies after other formal treatments have not fully
solved the problem. These sores are such a nuisance they go for a season and come back a gain.
This time, I thing we need more determined or robust home remedies for cold sores to deal with this.
Cold sores, sometimes called fever blisters, are small blisters that come up around the mouth and
nostrils.
They usually appear toward the end of a cold. The virus that causes cold sores is known as herpes
simplex virus. Most of us have natural immunity that enables us to keep it under control.
Cold sores can easily spread out to other people and usually younger people are the ones who
suffer from it. After first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

remedies like this type is useful for external sores.
4 droplets of tea tree oil
4 droplets of eucalyptus oil (species radiate)
2 droplets of spike lavender
3 droplets of geranium essential oil
3 teaspoons of St John s wort infused oil
Add the first four oils drop by drop into a dark closable bottle and then add the St John s wort
infused oil last. Shake the bottle for the oils to mix evenly. Put the tightly closed bottle in a dark
bottle in a cupboard for a day where the temperature is not more that 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Clean up you cold sore and make sure it is dry and apply a drop to it about twice a day until the
sore is gome.
Vitamins are always necessary
L lysine is a major booster
There is an amino acid called arginine which helps the herpes virus to multiply. This arginine can
be conquered by another amino acid called L lysine which prevents the cold sores to spread. This
L lysine, is an essential amino acid which is necessary for human health but the body can t
manufacture it; it has to be gotten from food.
Use the L lysine vitamins and supplements as suggested by the label. The dosages vary for a new
outbreak or preventive

Distracted Driving (Psas)
Each day in the United States, 8 people on average are killed in a distracted driving related
accident (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Distracted driving can constitute
anything from talking on the phone to reaching for a fallen object while driving. One way people
have been fighting to combat the deadliness of distracted driving is through PSAs. PSAs are Public
Service Announcements, like commercials, that warn people of dangerous activities and heighten
their awarenessof a problem. Even if people think no one pays attention to PSAs, if even one
person saw and understood a PSA, it would make a difference. PSAs are an important part of the
preventionof distracted driving because it heightens peoples awareness of the... Show more content

Around 90% of participants in a study on reception of PSAs understood the PSA eyes on the
road hands on the wheel to mean either stay alert or don t drive distracted (US Department of
Transportation, 2017). This implies that PSAs certainly get their message across when they are
viewed. On average, at least 70% of participants recognized a seat belt PSA, so PSAs stick in the
memory of those who view them (US Department of Transportation, 2017). According to the US
Department of Transportation (2017), around 60% participants agreed that it was often or always
necessary for dynamic PSA signs on roads. In addition, the majority of participants strongly agreed
that it was very important to provide information on putting away mobile phones while driving.
This shows that people are aware of the problem of distracted driving, and agree that awareness of
this problem in others is extremely important. Finally, the participants were asked if would change
their behavior if they saw a PSA that said eyes on the road, hands on the wheel , don t be a
distracted driver , or drive safely, text later it can wait . The overwhelming majority answered
maybe, probably yes, or definitely yes (US Department of Transportation, 2017). PSAs do make
a huge difference in driving behavior and give people a reminder of the consequences of
distracted driving. The more immediate a reminder, the more it will affect your behavior, so PSAs
on signs are even more effective than those viewed on television or in other advertising. PSAs are
important parts of preventing dangerous behavior like distracted

James M. Cain s Double Indemnity
Double Indemnity (1994) is a movie director by Billy Wilder with his screenwriting partner
Raymond Chandler, which is based on James M. Cain s famous novel. The main storylines in the
book and the movie are roughly the same; it talks about how an experienced insurance seller Walter
helps a housewife Phyllis to murder her husband to get the double indemnity.
There are still many notable changes in the transition from book to film, like characters action, plot,
style, and relationship between anti hero and femme fatale in the novel are all more complex
than the movie. For example, in Cain s novel, Phyllis is a complete ruthless murderer because
she is responsible for almost ten people deaths. However, in the film, it does not mention Phyllis
past murders. So in the book, she is more murderous, which exactly shows how a femme fatale
looks like. Also, from page to screen, there are some scenes did not show in the film. For ... Show

compare, I like Cain s ending much more because it is more poetic and dramatic. Another
significant difference is that the character

Redemption In Khaled Hosseini s The Kite Runner
One of the most primary ways to achieve redemption is through the means of acceptance. At the
same time, a majority of people who are not ready to accept their mistakes will either end up
making another mistake or live their entire life in guilt. This situation can be observed in Khaled
Hosseini s The Kite Runner when Amir attempts to achieve redemptionby accusing Hassan for
theft. Before Amir could accept his mistake, he attempts to redeem himself by intentionally
tempting Hassan to fight back and speak up. However, this attempt backfires on Amir when
Hassan and Ali decide to leave Baba s house after accepting and apologizing for Hassan s mistake.
Therefore, acceptance plays a key role in redemption. Meanwhile, there are multiple variations of...

While attempting to achieve redemption, Amir hurled the pomegranate at [Hassan]. It struck
him in the chest, exploded in a spray of red pulp (Hosseini 92). This is important because the red
pulp of the pomegranate that struck Hassan on the chest symbolizes blood and violence that is
on Amir s mind. Thinking that Amir could achieve redemption by tempting Hassan to fight back,
he decides to throw pomegranates at him until he eventually realizes that this approach would
not work. Over time as Amir matures he continues his quest for a new approach. While
searching for Sohrab, Amir engages into a fight with Assef; where after a very long time he
surprisingly felt at peace. [He] laughed because [he] saw that, in some nook in the corner of [his]
mind, [he] had been looking forward to this (Hosseini 303). This is ironic because while Amir
used to fear Assef at the time when Hassan got raped, he now looks forward to this fight. The fear
that caused Amir to betray Hassan, now allows Amir to achieve redemption. Ironically, through the
means of violence, Amir successfully finally achieves

Impact Of Ecosystem On The Deepwater Horizon Spill
The oil and refined products are a mixture of various hydrocarbons and other compounds whose
physical and chemical properties vary; during an oil spill, the composite determines the behavior
and impact on the environmental elements such as physical, biological, ecosystem, and the
economical impact. During this Case Study I will continue to discuss the characteristics of each
affected ecosystem including organisms commonly found in the Deepwater Horizon Spill affected
area, potential threats based on their relative location to the spill, and the economic impact of
damages in these communities.
Main Body
During the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill an estimated five million barrels of oil was released into
the sea. The BP oil spill is the largest chemical dispersants in marine waters in US history. The oil
slick affected the states of Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana the spill impacted
more than 110 kilometers from the coast of Louisiana. Other affected are outside the US was the
coasts of Mexico and Cuba. Understanding various ecosystems allow us to better understand the
impact in which the Deepwater Horizon Spill had within each type of ecosystem. The oil spill
affected three specific types of ecosystems including the coastal, freshwater, and the upland areas.
Wetland plants are called hydrophytes; in the past wetlands had been viewed as wasted land,
fortunately scientists have realized that wetlands have a tremendous value to our ecosystem.

Taekwondo In North Korea
First off, the word Taekwondo means the Way of Hand and Foot. In addition, Tae means foot,

kingdoms that split up the area: Koguryo being the largest, Paekje, and Silla being the smallest. To
add, in the tombs, documents, and sculptures that were found in all 3 kingdoms, the first forms of

The Lady With The Dog Essay
Colour is in the art and the art is literature. Often, one depicts morality the concept of shades: a
color scheme that involves the gradation from lightest to darkest, which in most case, is white to
black. In such scale, the shades white and black represent two contrasting extremes as they parallel
the idea of morality, where white is right and black is wrong. However, the complication arises at
the area between the white and black: the grey. The grey area possesses no absolute verdict, for one
can be both morally right and wrong. Russian realist Anton Chekhovimplements such perception
as he colours the story with white, black, and grey. An exploration of The Lady with The Dog
serves to examine his employment of colour in addressing the issue of morality, specifically
regarding the characters actions, and in part, the conveyance of his personal views of what is right
and wrong.
Although each individual will claim to retain a unique perception of what is right, most can share
the agreement that the colour white is in fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the concept of morality in shades should not particularly be alien to the reader,
Chekhov does provide an interesting take of morality for instance, that he believes love, or
feelings, to be an important factor of human morale which he expresses using the colours white,
black, and grey. However, the reader should not expect to learn about morals through this story, as
everyone possesses his or her own opinion, but rather should reconsider what they value is right
and wrong. The exploration of colour in The Lady with The Dog proves insightful in understanding
the author s perspective towards morale of actions, even though Chekhov does not entertain the
reader with an absolute verdict. Colour is in the art and the art is literature; and what this
exploration reveals is only just one shade of the

How Jellyfish Affect The Ecosystem
Jellyfish can be seen in freshwater and saltwater inhabiting everywhere it goes. Some may see
jellyfish depicted in media such as the television show SpongeBob SquarePants as a fun
recreational sport of catching Jellyfish in butterfly nets. Though most may recognize the creatures
as your worse nightmare on a beach and avoiding getting stung by them. However, researchers and
explorers have found effects that jellyfishhave on impacting the ecosystem and life style of others.
These findings have shown a divide between the benefits and negative outcomes they have.
Researchers discover an overgrowing size and population in jellyfish. Lindsey Bloomberg, it
discusses how jellyfish are affecting the ecosystem by showing research discussing the 2010
report by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) based on ocean acidification stating
there is an increased jellyfish numbers and changes in fish abundance, which is from pollution,
overfishing and rising carbon dioxide. Due to their low oxygen intake they can survive anywhere
from predator free waters to algae choked expanses. Thicker masses of floating jellyfish will
consume large volumes of fish eggs and larvae, preventing fish populations from rebounding, states
Lucas Brotz of the University of British Columbia Fisheries Center, which shows the population of
jellyfish are taking over an already stressed ecosystem and dominating it even more. To further
jellyfish taking over an ecosystem is discussed by Oren Liebermann

  • 2. Female Roles In Dystopian Literature In a research done by Mcclantoc (2016), it can be deduced that the main ingredient of a good dystopian literature are the main protagonists who induce some kind of social change in their society or world. This applies regardless of the two types of dystopia; one that is apparent or in the guise of a utopia. In dystopian literature, the main characters are the average person. They are usually male characters. At the beginning of the story, they noticed the flaws in their society and question or disagree with it. The characters are devised and carefully laid out that they eventually show initiative to induce change in their society or world. Yet, the main female characterwho is included in the story alongside the main character serves as a trigger or guide to initiate the main character to make a change for their dystopic society or world. Despite how hard the female character provides aid to the main male character, she does not rise to be in the spotlight in the story. The theory by Gottelieb (2001) observed the criterion of how the female protagonistis viewed and portrayed in dystopian literature. The theory mocked the existence of the female characters in the story. It seems that these female characters only have two tasks in their story. They serve as the trigger to directly or indirectly start the main character s initiative; to only step aside later and let the male hero take over and bring victory.... • 3. The Relationship Between The Sat Scores And Family Income... IB Math SL Internal Assessment: What is the relationship between the SAT scores and family income of candidates around the world? By: Rahul Suresh What is the relationship between the SAT scores and family income of candidates around the world? Introduction: The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college and university admissions in the United States. It was first introduced in 1926, and its name and scoring system have changed several times throughout the years. Many students around the world that want to pursue post secondary institutions in the US make it a point to write the SAT at least once in their high school career to better their chances of getting a higher score. This test has three parts to it one reading, writing and one math. In order to achieve the best score that they can possibly get and be placed in the highest possible percentile, students may decide to attend SAT preparation classes starting from the early years of High/Middle School. The unfortunate reality of these extra preparation courses is that they are quite expensive, and due to this, they mostly cater towards to higher or higher middle class families. Courses that provide extra preparation such as Ivy Global are not very affordable to many families and so students. According to many statistics and news reports, the higher the test taker s family income, the higher their scores in the test. This has been a topic of great controversy as we have grown in the modern society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rogers Chocolates in 2007 Problem Statement Rogers Chocolates is not using its core competency of strong retail sales ability and its distinctive competency of producing a wide variety of high quality, hand wrapped chocolates to attract a sufficient market niche of worldwide tourists and high income, middle aged couples that are mainly empty nested or child free, so that they can maximize their market share and profit volumes in a rapidly growing market in which globalization, productinnovation toward a more health conscious product, and growing buyer preferences are major driving forces. Their tremendous ability in retail sales, in which their 11 stores accounted for 50% of total sales, and financial leverage have not been utilized to expand Rogers to profit... Next priority is the online and mail order purchasers as the low cost of sales and high reorder rate created high profit were a great way of attracting global markets without spending large amounts of capital to expand. Wholesalers would come next as they contribute 30% of total sales and margins are not as high as retail sales. 5. Since Rogers has great credit worthiness and a great borrowing capacity, they could improve their CSR image by using that capacity to acquire its supplier and provide them with organic and fair trade capabilities as well as increase manufacturing technologies. Not only will this help give Rogers a better social responsibility image, it will allow Rogers to expand their product varieties and qualities even further to adapt to the emerging needs of health driven chocaholics . By creating a wider variety of products, retail, wholesale, and online outlets will be able to satisfy more consumers, thus increasing market share. A 2007 online study conducted by Image Power Green brands about attitudes and behaviors toward the chocolate market has shifted dramatically; virtually 100% of those surveyed express some desire for greener practices, up from 58% a year ago (Kuhn). Executive Salaries and What it Means to our Economy The economy of the United States is by far the largest and most powerful economy in the entire world. The average family income is roughly $40,000 a year and our GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is well over 10 trillion dollars. The next closest country is Japan with 4 trillion dollars of total GDP.(Johnson Wales: Economics) The United States has so many large corporations it takes someone to run each one and it also take a lot of money to pay someone to be in charge of each one. Directors have awarded compensation packages that go well beyond what is required to attract and hold on to executives and have rewarded even poorly performing executives. These executive pay excesses come at the expense of shareholders as well as the company and its employees. Furthermore, a poorly designed executive compensation package can reward decisions that are not in the long term interests of a company. Excessive CEO pay is essentially a corporate governance problem. When CEOs have too much power in the boardroom, they are able to extract what economists call economic rents from shareholders (Economic rent is distinct from economic profit, which is the difference between a firm s revenues and the opportunity cost of its inputs). The board of directors is supposed to protect shareholder interests and minimize these costs. At approximately two thirds of US companies, the CEO sits as the board s chair. When one single person serves as both chair and CEO, it is impossible to objectively monitor and evaluate his or her own performance. What can be done about this? The best thing that can happen to let shareholders know about CEO executive pay excesses is to let it come to light. Companies are required to file documents describing their executives compensation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC); these often are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Theories of Emile Durkkheim Essay The Theories of Emile Durkheim Emile Durkheim also referred to as The Father of Sociology (Thio, 2002), played a critical role in establishing theories based on Social Facts (Thio, 2002) He is best known for his views of social reality ( Thio, 2002) and their ties into how a society works. He was said to be a sociologist who played an important part in the development of structural functionalism (Thio, 2002), and sociology as a whole. His four major studies, or publications, have assured him a place in the history of sociology s intellectual development (Thompson, 2002). His scientific way of thinking did not make it easy for him to do well in the studies he required to get into this elite school (The Biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000)). After two attempts for the entrance exam he was finally accepted in 1879 (The biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000). • 7. A Classroom At An American Public School A typical classroom in an American public school holds a group of students with a myriad of diverse learning needs. Each class is likely to consist of some visual learners, some auditory learners, and some hands on learners. Some students may work best in groups, while others work best independently. Some students may do well with mathematics and logic but poorly with visual spatial skills, or any combination of the multiple intelligences. Whether these students are spending a small portion of the day or the entire day in the classroom, teachers should take care to address the needs of these students as best they can. While there is always room for improvement with how these students are included in the class, the American public school system has come a long way. In order to best understand inclusion of students with significant learning needs in a public school classroom and the progress that has been made, it is important to have a solid understanding of the history of public education in the United States, and the progress that has been made. The history of public education in America starts with the Puritans in the 1600s in New England. At this time, the primary goal of education was to teach children to read and understand the Bible in order to ward off Satan. The first act that mandated education was the Massachusetts Act of 1642 that required parents to be sure that their children knew the principles of religion and the capital laws of the commonwealth (Matzat, 2009). A notable point about this act is that it did not really address school at all, only stating that parents were responsible for the education of their children. The idea behind this was that if all citizens understood laws and scripture, they would in turn abide by those laws. In 1647, the Old Deluder Satan Act was established, creating the foundation of public education as we know it today (Matzat, 2009). This act required ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As stated in , The Scarlet Letter, it states, Measured by the prisoner s experience, however, it might reckoned a journey of some length; for, haughty as her demeanor was, she perchance underwent an agony from every footstep of those that thronged to see her, as if her heart had been flung in the street for them all to spurn and trample upon. This quote means that Hester is walking through the streets of her town and no one is saying anything to her or making eye contact with her at all. She is being completely shunned for one mistake that she had made. This must make Hester feel very sorrowful that no one is talking to her. The compatibility of a wide range of devices connected to the network needs to be taken into consideration due to the broad range of operating systems, application software and file management systems available. For instance, a word processed document generated on a MacBook laptop running a variant of Mac OS X would need to be compatible with word processing applications used on the school network system that runs on MicrosoftWindows. In the event which it is not, the file would need to be converted into a compatible file type in order to be accessed on school devices. Access to a file management system that is linked to the student s school login would also be crucial, as the documents can then be manipulated, whether they are uploaded, retrieved or stored. This offers the student a wide range of options in which they can access their own files, as well as many forms of shared information placed on the system that include school research resources. The usage of cloud services such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive would need to be universal for all platforms connected to the server for file management. • 11. The Significant Role of Women in Joseph Conrad s Heart of... In the 1900s novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the protagonist often encounters women at landmarks of his life. Charlie Marlow is a sailor and imperialist who sets out along the Congo River to civilize the savages. The novella begins with a crew on the Thames waiting for the tides to change. During their wait, a character named Marlow tells of his exploits on the African continent. In his recounted travels, Marlow meets other imperialists such as Mr. Kurtz, a man who is obsessed with the pursuit of ivory and riches. Like Mr. Kurtz, Marlow embarks across the African continent in hopes of earning both money and respect. One early critic of the novel, Edward Garnett, wrote in his review that [Heart of Darkness] is simply a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women are viewed by Marlow as ignorant little creatures above the press of imperialism completely innocent, but entirely unaware. Africa is written as setting and backdrop which eliminates the African as human factor. Africa as a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity, into which the wandering European enters at his peril (Achebe). Thus Conrad brings the savages of Africa and general women together. Marlow brings the two victims of imperialism together in one, brief observation of Mr. Kurtz s foreign mistress. Conrad s concise description of an Amazonian woman on page 56 is as follows: ...She was savage and superb, wild eyed and magnificent; there was something ominous and stately in her deliberate progress... Her long shadow fell to the water s edge. Her face had a tragic and fierce aspect of wild sorrow and of dumb pain mingled with the fear of some struggling, half shaped resolve. She stood looking at us without a stir, and like the wilderness itself, with an air of brooding over an inscrutable purpose... Women and the savages are brought together under one umbrella of mingled patronization and awe. In this respect, Marlow s view of women is the perfect oxymoron (Nadelhaft). Marlow s tone concerning women and the Amazon is reverent, but belittling. These two groups of people are sub human to Marlow in that he considers them of a lesser intellect and lesser value. ... We met playing soccer on my old high schools soccer field one sunny afternoon. He is from San Paulo, Brazil and currently attends Princeton Senior High School. He is only seven teen years old and has been in America for only nine months. I was very eager to find out what his hobbies and interests are and just how different Brazil was from America. The first topic discussed was holidays. We first talked about how he celebrates Christmas Day. He said that they all would wake up and eat breakfast together first thing that morning. They would then visit and begin making lunch shortly after. They made rice, black beans, chicken, cakes, candies, and would have it with wine. At first when I heard wine I was a bit thrown off guard, but he explained that the drinking age is eighteen unlike America where it is twenty one. He then proceeded with telling me that around eight at night they would all sit around the tree and one person will be designated to get the presents under the tree and call out the name that was on the present much like we do here in America. • 18. The Positive And Negative Effects Of Gentrification Gentrification is a planned or unplanned process where wealthy individuals displace poor individuals from their areas of living by purchasing the property and later upgrading it through modernization and renovation (Brown Saracino, 2013). Ruth Glass coined the term Gentrification in her book London: Aspects of Change in reference to the influx of wealthy individuals to poorly inhabited areas in central London in 1964 (Brown Saracino, 2013). These rich individuals were referred to as gentryhence the term gentrification. Gentrification has been a controversial issue both in urban planning and politics primarily due to the displacement of poor people by the rich folks (Shaw Hagemans, 2015). Many individuals have viewed gentrification as an illegal act that should be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, another group of people believe that gentrification is the way forward to promoting growth and development. With such contrasting ideas, this paper is going to take a look at gentrification from a positive and negative perspective, its effects, and how it can be prevented or contained. Apart from this, the paper will also address the following questions. What is the societal, public health, and economic impact of gentrification? Does gentrification play a role in racial segregation? Consumers, communities, and the environment are key stakeholders the auto industry has to consider when it comes to pollution. More energy efficient, hybrid or electric vehicles can increase customer satisfaction and add to the company s business performance. For instance, fuel consumption is an assumption of performance and is very important for consumers. Thus, automotive companies have to come up with great designs with minimal consumption of resources and raw materials; engines that give more mileage and less fuel consumption. Given that consumers are the most important stakeholders, communities of these consumers also want vehicles with the lowest emissions possible with hopes of keeping the air around them clean and healthy. Once again, these informal bands and communities of consumers have large amounts of power based on buying power alone, and can significantly impact an automobilecompany s business. A vehicle s environmental impact can be easily measured through miles per gallon and measures of emissions. In 2011, President Barrack Obama and automobile companies agreed to raise fuel efficiency standards to meet an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. But none affected the ability for a relationship between mass, acceleration, force to be drawn. The largest error was the one mentioned above. But its source was the easiest to account for. We mis imputed the value of the spoke length into DataStudio. Luckley this mistake was easily remedied due to the design of the pulley. The electronic eye was recording a time that was exactly half of what it should have been. This time data produced an acceleration that was exactly double what it should be. Therefore this was issue was easily remedied by dividing the times by 2. Other sources of error were due to the frictional forces in the pulley system, also the masses of the weights might not have been perfect. Air resistance was a major player when the difference in masses was large, therefore acceleration was high. Originally, the photo was very dark so I increased the brightness and contrast at different levels for the skyand the trees/houses respectively. I added an orange photo filter near where the sunlight diffused around the tree. This picture best represents rule of thirds because the leaves are not in the middle of the picture, but rather in the bottom right corner. I like how the leaves frame the sky on the bottom without covering too much of it. I made the blue in the sky more contrasted and brighter. I also made the leaves redder and with a paintbrush went over some parts with red to make them a bit brighter. For this photograph, I had my mom stand under the tree because I really liked how the leaves contrasted against her and the trees and house in the background. I made her skin softer and added a layer mask to the leaves and her eyes so they stood out more clearly. In order to do this, he exhibited several unwaverable beliefs and actions that defined his life as a philosopher. Epictetus s text The Enchiridion also attempts to instruct readers on how live a life of virtue. This branch of philosophy is labelled stoicism. Due to how well the actions expressed by Socratesand suggested by Epictetus seem to align, a modern day examination of both The Enchiridion and several of Platos texts written about Socrates could conclude that Socrates himself may be considered a stoic. In line 47e of Crito, Socrates says to Crito that life is not worth living when the moral center of the soul is corrupted, an aspect of humanity which is just as essential as the body. In passage 38 of Epictetus text, he suggests that the decision making center of the mind should be protected like a shoe protects the foot, and that this will allow for safety in future actions. Both Epictetus and Socrates express the belief that the soul or mind is just important as the body, and ought to be protected and focused on above all else in order to better pursue one s purpose in life. Furthermore, in line 44d, Socrates tells Crito that the majority cannot cause great acts of good or evil, and that the greatest evil of all is straying from a virtuous path and deliberately causing wrongdoing. In saying this Socrates is attempting to prove to Crito that the opinions of others do not matter because they cannot truly cause harm. Epictetus mirrors this belief in passage 20. He advises the reader that the only offense that can be taken to another s opinion is actually just caused by one s own opinion of their insult. As soon as the importance of this opinion is diminished, one can live freely and according to their own virtue without worry of harm from others. Socrates, being known for stirring up arguments amongst the city s wisest men, grew widely unpopular in the community. This unpopularity, and many other troubles led Socratesto be accused and sentenced to trial for corrupting the youth, and of not believing in the Gods of the city. Socrates then clearly says that he has proof that death is good. He starts to say that death is a blessing and there are either two different scenarios of death. The first scenario of death is having no perception of anything at all and having your soul relocated, like a great dreamless sleep, which in Socrates eyes is truly a blessing. The second is in which your soul is relocated elsewhere, you are able to talk to others that have passed like great figures from the past. The alleged inconstancy is clear between these two arguments. The first argument Socrates states that he does not fear death because he has no clue what lies beyond. He cannot fear what he does not know of. With both arguments he is very confident in what he is saying, especially with the second argument claiming that he has proof that death is good. In the second argument Socrates says that death can be two things and then proceeds to explain what death is. In that argument, by stating what death is, he is clearly saying that he has some knowledge about death and is completely contradicting his first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dollar General Case Analysis Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well known extreme value retailer, has an established competitive advantage versus other consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis an appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store retail segment (original dollar stores, close out retailers, limited assortment grocers, and extreme value retailers) all compete on price. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek limited expansion within the continental United States (US extreme value industry still growing at $1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to this state only. Whereas development within the US had been the company s growth engine for years, the company is now closing and remodeling stores with equal returns. As such, the company s growth aims should be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme value markets are well received, and stores with limited SKU s fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly, store merchandise productivity could be enhanced by eliminating seasonal items (costumes, summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery items. Research suggests that same store growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis on fresh grocery items, and Dollar General appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of perishables on hand. A slightly larger store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of development, as Dollar General seems to have slightly underestimated the sweet spot for its store size with the current store model. In paragraph nine, he states, How do I know that he did not bring it about that there be no Earth at all, no heavens, no extended thing, no figure, no size, no place, and yet all these things should seem to me to exist precisely as they appear to do now. His point is that this omnipotent evil deceiver could create in our minds an understanding of mathematics and logic that is at odds with reality, causing us to construe everything wrongly. Thus Descartes ends this final and devastating doubt with the preliminary conclusion that everything he perceives can be called into doubt. Descartes answers his seemingly hopeless skepticism from the first meditation with the Cogito. The basic point of his Cogito argument is that for me to either perceive awry, or even to doubt my own existence, I must exist. It is, as Descartes says, I am, I exist is necessarily true every time it is uttered by me or conceived in my mind (Med2, par3). He makes two arguments for the Cogito in his second meditation. Often, one depicts morality the concept of shades: a color scheme that involves the gradation from lightest to darkest, which in most case, is white to black. In such scale, the shades white and black represent two contrasting extremes as they parallel the idea of morality, where white is right and black is wrong. However, the complication arises at the area between the white and black: the grey. The grey area possesses no absolute verdict, for one can be both morally right and wrong. Russian realist Anton Chekhovimplements such perception as he colours the story with white, black, and grey. An exploration of The Lady with The Dog serves to examine his employment of colour in addressing the issue of morality, specifically regarding the characters actions, and in part, the conveyance of his personal views of what is right and wrong. Due to their low oxygen intake they can survive anywhere from predator free waters to algae choked expanses. Thicker masses of floating jellyfish will consume large volumes of fish eggs and larvae, preventing fish populations from rebounding, states Lucas Brotz of the University of British Columbia Fisheries Center, which shows the population of jellyfish are taking over an already stressed ecosystem and dominating it even more. To further jellyfish taking over an ecosystem is discussed by Oren Liebermann ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
