After more than 40 years, the California home of post-tensioning pioneer Edward K. Rice, PE, FACI, stands as a testament to the durability of post-tensioning used with shrinkage-compensating Type K cement.
Built in 1937, the Fallingwater Residence stands to this day as one of the greatest architectural achievements of Frank Lloyd Wright. Over time, the structure has endured a number of structural issues, which included cracking and deflection at the cantilever terraces. To ensure its historic value, contractors used post-tensioning systems to rehab a portion of the deteriorating elements. Post-tensioning allowed for hidden repairs in the floor cavity between the girders, making rehabilitation virtually invisible from many viewpoints. With repairs completed in 2002, the post-tensioned systems used proved to be a durable solution for the Fallingwater residence.

Shortcreting has proved to be the best method for construction of curved surfaces. Domes are now much easier to construct with the advent of shotcrete technology. Tunnel linings are also becoming easy with this technology. Not only are these but there a wide range of applications where this technology has been a leading one. This technical paper includes the concept of shotcrete and how it differs from conventional concrete. It also enumerates the different types of process involved in shotcreting i.e. dry mix process and wet mix process. Advantages of shotcrete and its applications in various fields like tunneling, canals, buildings etc. are specified in detail. This paper presents an overview of shotcreting technology along with its applications.
DEFINITION OF SHOTCRETE:-
Shotcrete is a mortar or high performance concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a backing surface. It is the force of this spraying action that leads to compaction of the concrete or mortar which then forms layers of concrete to the required thickness. Shotcreting has been an acceptable way of placing cementitious material in a variety of applications.
Usually patented polypropylene fibers are included in the shotcrete which increases the cohesive nature of the shotcrete through mechanically binding the cementitious materials together. This mechanism reduces the rebound waste that occurs through the shotcreting process and these fibers also resist plastic shrinkage and cracking through their ability to enhance the early stage tensile strength of concrete.
Shotcrete also gives better surface finishes and reduces surface tearing on non- linear sections. Cementitious material containing the poly propylene fibers resist cycles of freezing and thawing and also reduces the chances of water and chemical penetrations.
Concrete is the most widely used construction material in India with annual consumption exceeding 100 million cubic meters.
High performance concrete is a concrete in which certain characteristics are developed for a particular application and environment, so that it will give excellent performance in the structure in which it will be placed.
A high-strength concrete is always a high performance concrete, but a high-performance concrete is not always a high-strength concrete.
Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is considered as a concrete which can be placed and compacted under its own weight with no vibration.
It is not affected by the skills of workers, the shape and amount of reinforcing bars or the arrangement of a structure.
Due to its high-fluidity and resistance to segregation, it can be pumped longer distances.
It consists of the same components as conventionally vibrated concrete, which is cement, aggregates, and water, with the addition of chemical and mineral admixtures in different proportions.
Usually, the chemical admixtures used are superplasticizers and viscosity-modifying agents.
SCC is especially useful in confined zones where vibrating compaction is difficult.
Ultimate Behavior of Lightweight High Strength Concrete Filled Steel Tube (LW...IOSR Journals
Strength and ductility of concrete members can be significantly improved with lateral confinement, usually achieved by using a steel tube casing. The concrete confinement can be utilized to make bridge lighter and have longer spans. In addition, a significant portion of the load carried concrete bridge girders is the self-weight of the girders and deck. If all or part of the girder and deck can be made using high strength lightweight concretes, there is a potential for appreciable economic savings since the self-weight could be reduced by as much as 15-20%. The study described herein investigates the static nonlinear behavior of lightweight high strength concrete filled steel tube (LWHCFST) bridges up to failure. The current study had two specific goals. The first was to experimentally determine the static modulus of elasticity of confined high strength lightweight concrete mixture. The second was to develop a nonlinear finite element computer program to study the ultimate behavior of a filled tube (LWHCFST) example bridge. The nonlinear stress-strain behavior of confined high strength lightweight concrete is evaluated experimentally by the authors and is used to help establish a comparison between the ultimate behavior of the bridge using confined normal weight concrete and confined high strength lightweight concrete. The ultimate strength of the bridge is related to the occurrence of an equivalent failure mechanism. The study indicated that the use of (LWHCFST) is beneficial for extending bridge girder lengths

Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

4. Project Overview:
The Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) is a unique post-
tensioned concrete slab-on-ground constructed for the Minnesota
Department of Military Affairs at Camp Ripley. EVOC is a 60,000 ft 2
“skid pan” that is made slippery so that vehicle drivers can practice
controlling skids. EVOC consists of a 12.5 in. thick concrete slab with 20
in. grade beams around the perimeter. The post-tensioned slab used
6000 psi shrinkage-compensating concrete that was laid on top of two
layers of 6 mil thick polyethylene sheet and a 14 in. base course.
Additionally, it was separated from an asphaltic “transition” slab by a
perimeter expansion joint.

5. Project Overview Continued:
Unlike most post-tensioned concrete slabs of similar square footage,
EVOC had two pours of 30,000 ft 2 pours each, which were poured on
consecutive days. Initial stressing was done at 0.4 Fpu (or 16.5 kip) when
the concrete in Pour #2 reached 1500 psi. Final stressing was done at 0.8
Fpu (or 33 kip) when the concrete reached 3000 psi in both pours. Each
0.5 in. diameter 270 ksi tendon was stressed from both ends to increase
the final average force in the tendon. In total, EVOC has 190 bundles of
two unbonded tendons spaced at 1 to 7 in. on center in the short 200 ft
direction and 150 bundles of two unbonded tendons spaced at 16 in. on
center in the long 300 ft direction.
Because the concrete slab would be exposed to aggressive environments
from inclement Minnesota weather and test chemicals, the project
documents required an encapsulated post-tensioning system of PTI
specifications. This should help increase the durability of the concrete
and improve life-cycle costs.
