We live in a networked world that gives us a multitude of opportunities for creating, connecting, collaborating, and networking, allowing us to build multi-faceted learning environments of exploration and inquiry. Self-determined learning, or heutagogy, is one pedagogical approach that be can applied for taking advantage of these opportunities across all levels of schooling – starting from pre-school and kindergarten to post-secondary education and lifelong learning. Combined with technology, self-determined learning becomes a powerful means of creating personal learning environments that support lifelong learning. During this session, we will look at ways in which a self-determined learning approach has been applied across all learning communities and discuss how the approach can be used in practice, from the early years through formal education to lifelong learning.

This keynote presentation will provide an overview of field-based learning - an active, inquiry-based teaching and learning strategy where teaching and learning is extended beyond the classroom/laboratory walls and where students are exposed to real-world teaching and learning settings in the broader community. In field-based learning, students learn by hands-on application of course content and though direct interaction with the environment rather than solely through textbooks and lectures.

Exploring Inquiry-based Science Lab Instruction: STEM education programs have incorporated inquiry-based instruction (IBI) to improve student engagement, learning and retention in STEM programs. What defines IBI? How does it look in a college lab class? What are the benefits and challenges of IBI, and how are the challenges overcome? Attendees in this presentation participated in a model enzyme lab activity offered in four different levels of IBI, learned to identify and differentiate between the four levels of IBI, explored scaffolds in IBI and their uses to support student learning, and discussed the benefits and challenges involved in implementing IBI.

This was presented at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Sotland, on 29th November 2007. The main focus is Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) but at the end I introduce Second Life and talk about my work with students in SL. Firstly I talked about what IBL is and then moved on to describe the work of the Centre for Inquiry Based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences (CILASS) which is based at Sheffield University. I mentioned the level 1 module "Inquiry in Infrmation Management" (new last year), where I am part of the teaching team, and in particular I talked about the activity in Second Life with my first year "Information Literacy" class.
