- VMware's strategy for data center evolution focuses on delivering applications on any device through a fluid, instant and secure "one cloud" infrastructure.
- vSphere 6 is VMware's largest vSphere launch, providing major improvements in scale, performance, management and availability for applications compared to prior versions.
- vSphere with Operations Management provides monitoring, capacity planning and health status for vSphere environments, helping customers optimize capacity and grow virtual environments.
Today's performance monitoring challenge is to go beyond basic virtualization metrics provided by tools like VCops, to manage the complex, dynamic, multi-application virtualized infastructures that involve multiple hypervisors and mission critical applications like SAP. Because, if not properly managed, virtualization dynamics and dependencies can cause significant performance and user experience issues that diminish the benefits of virtualization and risk interruption of critical business processes.

Using SCCM 2012 r2 to Patch Linux, UNIX and MacsLumension
Today, everything has to be patched. From desktop and laptop to server and every operating system in between. With compliance, what we have to pay attention to is what’s actually out there on our network – not just what you wish were there.
Servers (Windows, UNIX and Linux)Even Windows-centric environments have at least a few UNIX or Linux servers that need to be secure and patched. Linux and UNIX servers often fulfill critical functions with few and short maintenance windows. These can be a real pain point for admins who specialize in Windows or are managed by an entirely different admin.
Desktops (Windows and Macs)Maybe you are responsible for desktops instead of servers. Again it’s not just a Windows story any more. More and more people are opting for Macs instead of Windows. Watch the vulnerability lists and you’ll see that Macs need patching too.
The kicker though is the 80/20 rule. If at least 80% of the computers on your network are Windows and the remaining 20% are everything else – it’s a safe bet, given the maturity and ease of WSUS, that 20% of your patching effort goes to Windows but 80% of your effort is consumed with patching all the different flavors of UNIX, Linux and your Mac computers. We need one system to manage all our patches and one pane of glass to prove compliance from data center to desktop.
Believe it or not System Center 2012 R2 provides the infrastructure to do just that – it just needs a little help. Last time we showed you how you can patch 3rd party apps on Windows through System Center Update Manager. This time we’ll show you how you can patch non-Windows systems using the new System Center clients for UNIX, Linux and Mac.

How to Eliminate Load Balancer Upgrade DisruptionsAvi Networks
Watch on-demand here https://info.avinetworks.com/webinars/load-balancer-upgrade-disruptions
Upgrading load balancers has always been time-consuming. Maintenance windows need to be carefully planned weeks in advance to minimize impact to operations. What if you could schedule non-disruptive, per-tenant patches without requiring the entire load balancing fabric to upgrade?
In this webinar, we will talk about separate control and data plane updates, and pointed partial service engine (SE) upgrades / patches enabled by software-defined architectures. This is impossible with hardware appliances that have to upgrade as a whole. The following use cases will be covered:
- Sandbox upgrades with functional validation prior to 100% rollout
- Partial upgrades on the SE group level without impacting others
- CI/CD pipeline with self-service and canary upgrades

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

We live in a liquid world. By that, I mean that traditional, rigid business structures are melting away – and being replaced with new, agile, and dynamic business models. And the pace of change is unprecedented.
Bullets
Every industry is transforming: healthcare, education, retail, transportation, agriculture, or government services.
Example: Hollywood can release movies directly to your living room
Liquid environment has created new business opportunities

In this environment, every industry is transforming. Everything from healthcare, education, retail, transportation, agriculture, or government services. Literally every industry is experiencing disruption at some level.
One great example is entertainment. Think about how differently we consume media, like movies, these days. How often do you physically go to the movie theatre? Hollywood studios can release new movies directly to millions of viewers on their TVs, computer screens, and mobile devices…instantly. And, if you’re like me, you prefer the convenience of on-demand entertainment where you can relax in your own home, wearing your pajamas, snuggled on your own couch.
This liquid environment has created so many new business opportunities.

new class of competitors .. by companies less than 2- 3 years old
new class of threats … new avenues of vulnerabilities.
requires a new class of thinking

But it also has created new uncertainties and risk.
It can bring a new class of competitors. There are entire industries, established industries, that have been disrupted by companies less than 2 or 3 years old.
This shifting landscape is also introducing an entirely new class of threats. The very technology that is creating so much opportunity is simultaneously opening up new avenues of vulnerabilities.
The bottom line…it all requires a new class of thinking.
Bullets
Instant … “on demand” world
Fluid … a liquid environment … IT must be agile
Secure … protect brand, data, reputation
Brave New IT optimized for development and delivery of ALL apps: traditional, client-server applications … modern, cloud-native apps … on any device…safely.
IT must have bold and decisive attitude ... make calculated moves to new IT model
Full Script
At VMW, we believe that in order to meet the increasing expectations and demands coming from the business while harnessing all the opportunities that the mobile-cloud era offer, requires a complete new model for IT service delivery. A model that is
Instant … because we exist in an “on demand” world and literally need IT services and data available at the push of a button.
Fluid … because we’re operating in a liquid environment, where IT must be agile to meet evolving expectations and requirements.
Secure … because at the end of the day, everything is for naught if our brand, our data, or our reputation are significantly compromised.
We call this Brave New IT – An IT model that is optimized for the development and delivery of ALL applications, that means both tradition, client-server applications as well as modern, cloud-native apps, to be consumed on any device…safely.
To truly transform, and keep up with the expectations of business, IT must face these challenges and uncertainty with a bold and decisive attitude, and make thoughtful, calculated moves to a new model of IT

Let’s talk about our innovations, and our new architecture for IT.
Everything we do starts with an orientation around applications. What business cares about is expedient access to applications. But the application landscape within most businesses is diverse: there are traditional, client-server applications, there are new modern, cloud-native applications. And IT needs to manage ALL of them.
Serving apps efficiently all starts with the architecture of the underlying infrastructure and data center. A few years ago, VMware introduced the concept of a software-defined data center. We believe a software-defined data center is the best architecture for this instant, secure and fluid model of IT.
VMware’s architecture for the SDDC builds upon the core concepts that made compute virtualization so radically impactful, namely abstraction and pooling…and applied those virtualization fundamentals to the other key assets within the data center: storage and networking.
This architecture can be leveraged not just in your on premises data center, or your private cloud, but also by your public clouds. For example, your data center can extend to the VMware vCloud Air public cloud or one of the many managed clouds within the vCloud Air Network of service providers. The result is one unified hybrid cloud. All of these environments are managed from a common cloud management platform.
Built upon the software-defined data center architecture, we call this unified hybrid cloud “One Cloud for Any Application”. It runs on a wide variety of hardware infrastructure…whether you want to leverage your existing infrastructure, or adopt converged or even hyper converged infrastructure…One Cloud offers complete choice.
Now we talked about how applications are ultimately what users care about. Our users are increasingly expecting to consume their apps on the devices of their choice. Our Business Mobility solutions enable the safe consumption of applications and content on any device…all effectively managed by IT.

vCenter Server Appliance provides 10x scale enhancement
And on top of that we deliver ultimate choice
Doesn’t just have to be the VMware stack. Can utilize third party technologies such as Linux containers and OpenStack
T: We’ve also increased interoperability with vCloud Air. Now, let’s move to Storage.
We’ve increased the maximums again with this release.
vSphere 6 clusters can now support 64 hosts with 6000 virtual machines. This is up from 32 hosts and 4000 virtual machines.
vSphere 6 Hosts can now support 480 physical CPU’s and 12 TB of RAM, each host can now also support up to 1000 virtual machines.
Use Case:
Hadoop/Big Data Workloads
Scale-out applications will see greater consolidation ratios and improved performance with larger cluster sizes and greater virtual machine densities
vSphere Big Data Extensions simplifies and automates the process of provisioning and configuring production Hadoop clusters
We do very much want to enforce this concept of being able to do the live migration without the downtime that everyone’s come to know and love, and being able to cross continents or even from East Coast of the United States to the West Coast of Western Europe.
vSphere 6 supports new use cases that are now possible because of long distance whether it’d be taking workloads and doing that permanent migration from one data center to the other or whether it’s avoiding a disaster before it hits in the case of things such as hurricanes or typhoons or needing to do low balancing across multiple sites.
Then with fault tolerance for Multi-Processor VMs. Once again, one of those industry-first capabilities with the expansion from a single virtual CPU, which is what we currently support, now up to four virtual CPUs in that VM. Our internal customer data shows us that with the four virtual CPU support, we can now protect higher than 90% of the virtualized workloads out there. Doing it all, of course, with continuous availability so that when a failure occurs such as that X we’re showing in that host on the left-hand that there is no downtime and you continue to run.
It’s simple: add Operations Management to vSphere – which means adding capacity and health to vSphere. Double the savings of your virtual environment!
The intelligent dashboard in vSOM and vC Ops is the key to everything. It provides real time information on:
