2. My ancillary texts were
effective partly due to the
research I did into existing
indie digipaks and
magazine adverts, next are
the conventions I found
that have been applied to
my ancillary texts
3. ● simple front with just a picture, artist
name and album name.
● often different design on cd inside
● track names on the back and
occasionally the artist name on the
back too.
● artist name, production logo and
album name on spine
● picture behind the cd
booklets on the inside left cover which
have the tracks inside
● barcode, producer logo and copyright
info on the back● feature the artist prominently.
● name of the singles
● Most prominent text on the
advert is the band or artist name.
● The fonts are blocky and widely
spaced, often in capital letter
and either on a black box or on
the background of a scene
● links to their websites,
● logo for the producers of the
album.
4. The combination of my Ancillary texts and media
product is effective due to the synergy of the three
products: The location of the photos used for the
advert and are the same and it also
features in the video.
The image behind the cd is also an image from the
video, therefore the audience can see similarities
across the texts
5. Bright Colours
The use of bright colours in the digipak in conjunction with the bright block colours in the
video and the title of the song ‘different colours’ means that the audience have a constant
aesthetic between the three products
6. Fonts
We used very similar fonts in the three
texts, the titles on the video in helvetica
neue and the advert and digipak in roboto
mono. Both fonts are sans serif and give off
a cheerful vibe that fits the tone of the song
and narrative.
7. Track Title
There is also synergy between the
two ancillary texts, due to the fact
they both reference the same
tracks
8. Album title
Another reason that the ancillary texts and the media product are an effective combination
is that the album title is the same as the song, which is typical of the indie genre, such as
panic! At the disco’s album being titled after their hit ‘ death of a bachelor’. This also
means that the audience will recognise the album due it having the same title as the song,
the same location as the video and the image of the artist.
9. Production companies
I also included the same production companies on the advert and digipak, to achieve the
synergy between the two products. I chose dolvdor and dirty hit ltd, as they have both
produced the same albums in the past and have both produced songs in the indie genre.
10. Star image
I also conformed to Andrew Goodwin’s theory of star
image for the Ancillary task by including the artist as the
only person in the front image for the digipak and on the
advert. Also on the front of the digipak and on the
magazine advert the artist’s name is in a different colour
and is the largest font on the products.
