Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Gatheringour targetaudience’s opinionsonourmusicvideoandancillarytextsisimportantforusto
be able to produce the most effective products.Thiswouldthenallow ustobe able tomake more
our productsmore successful aswe respondedcorrectlytothe expectations, likesanddislikesand
desiresof productsfromthe indie/dreampopgenre.
We establishwhoourtargetaudience wasfromdoing arange of differentsecondaryresearch. As
our genre isa hybridwe foundthat the primarygenderisbothmale andfemale asthe males was
more the indie side of the genre andthe female wasthe popand dreampart. We also foundthatthe
mainage to base our productsat wouldbe for16-25 yearoldsand the secondaryage wouldbe 40
yearsold. The main ethnicitytobase ourproductson isprimarilywhite people butthe secondary
target audience wasAsians.
We thenwentonto do primaryresearchso we conductedtarget
audience interviewsandemailedaroundtogatherfeedbackon
our productsand to findoutmore about whatwe shouldinclude
withinourmusicvideoandancillarytextstomake itsuitour
target audience andmore importantlywhatwe shouldavoid
includingsowe can stayaway frommakingcliché products. From
our targetaudience interviewswe foundthatmanypeople thoughthe songwasquite hardto
understandsowe wouldhave tomake it obviouswithinourvideowhatwe are tryingtointerpret
and that the songbecame veryrepetitive. The majorityof people suggestedthattheypreferred
entirelynarrative basedvideoswithamplificationso
that itcan be relatedtothe song and itwill emphasise
the meaningof the lyrics. Theyalsosaidthat the theme
and conceptbehindourvideoideawasfittingtothe
genre andit portrayedthe lyricsto the songwell. The
negotiatedendingof ourvideowasalsolikedbecauseit
allowsfordifferentopinionsonthe videoandnotjusta
setending.Almosteveryonethatwe interviewedsaidthattheylikedthe blackandwhite filterwe
are goingto use to showthat the videoisa dreambecause itsubtlyshowstothe audience thatitis a
dreamwithoutgivingtoomuchaway,it alsocreatescontrastbetweenthe setting (beach-white and
the woods-black). We were alsowarnedthatwe neededtofocusonlightingbecause we wantedto
filmat nightbutit still neededtobe lightenoughforthe audience tobe able tosee whatisgoingon.
From thisfeedbackwe decidedtocut out the middle partof the songwhere itbecame very
repetitivetostoppeople losinginterestinourproduct.We alsodecidedtodo an entirelynarrative
basedvideotoagaintry and keeppeople interestedand make itamplificationsothatthe meaning
of the videoemphasisesthe meaningof the lyricsandthen
that wouldmake the songmuch easierforpeople to
understand.We alsocheckedthe nightbefore filmingwhenit
begangoingdark so we knew whattime toheadout the next
day sothat the lightingonourvideowon’tbe toodark forthe
audience.
Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
Afterconductingthe targetaudience interviewswe alsopitchedourideastothe classwhichwas
againfull of our target audience. Theyfirstof all saidthatourconcept forthe music videowasvery
creative especiallybecause we have the dreamvsrealityidea.Theyalsothoughtthatthe storyline
was veryunique andoriginal becauseeventhough
relationshipvideosare conventional forthisgenre we
decidedtobase the relationshipwithinadreamwhich
isnot conventional.Furthermore,theylikedthatwe
have a couple withinourvideothatispart of the target
audience because theysuggestedthatthatwoulddraw
more people in astheycan connectto the video. Our
unique camerashots(like the one outof the back of a car) waspraisedbyeveryone astheythought
it wouldbe the bestwayto showthe emotionsof the charactersincludedandtherefore itwill help
the audience toconnectto the videomore. The mise-en-scenewe consideredtoincludewassaidto
be significantasitshowsthe actors in everydayclothingwhichshowsthe audience thateveryone
facesthese relationshipissueswhichwouldagainallowthemtoconnecttothe actors.The colour
and locationcontrastwassaid to showthe goodand the bad parts withinarelationshipinsteadof
justfocusingonthe good parts whichmanyvideoswithin
thisgenre tendto include.However,theydidsaythatwe
neededtomake sure thatour sceneswere toodark and
some of our ideaswere seentobe veryambiguouswhich
couldlookcheap. To make our videomore effective we
wentoutthe nightbefore we plannedtofilmtocheck
whenitbeganto get darkand to see whetherthe shots
wouldlookgoodinthe lightingthatwe decidedon.We
alsomade sure we knewexactlyhowwe were goingtotake our‘ambiguous’shottostop
complicationswhenwe wentouttofilmandtherefore notime waswasted.We alsousedJosh’s
camera so thatit was of higherqualityandashe had more experience withusingit, itwaseasierto
achieve the more technical shots.
Afterrespondingtothe pitchfeedbackandtweakingourideassoitwas preferredmore we wenton
to draft outa storyboardof the narrative of our video. The mainfeedbackwasthe dancingscenes
lookedverycinematicanditwas a unique wasto signifylove.Theyalsolikedthe factthatthe scene
change was symbolisedbythe car scene whichisagainoriginal tothis
genre. The focuspull (onthe beach) wassaidto be creative andunique
as it helpsthe audience tounderstandMilly’semotionswhenshe is
alone showingshe feelsdetachedanddistantwithoutBen.Withinour
original endingwe includedafocuspull onthe phone screenas well
(whichwe latercut due to audience opinions) whichwasalsosaidtobe creative asit showsthe
importance of the message onthe screen. The shotswe were
planningonusingwasalsoseentobe creative andithelpsthe
audience tounderstandthe atmospherewithinthe video.The
colourchange to black andwhite wasthoughtto be a unique
wayto showthe audience thatthe videoisbasedona dreambut
it didn’tnecessarilygiveitaway.However,peoplewere still
suggestingthatourshotswere too ambiguous andif notdone correctlyit will take awaythe

effectivenessof ourvideo.Theywere also still mentioningthe darknessandachievingthe perfect
lighting.Inordertoadapt to the criticismswe usedJosh’scameratoachieve the ambiguousshots
and boughta slidertoachieve smoothshotsmakingthemmore effective andcheckedwhenit
begangettingdarkthe day before we were planningonfilming. Respondingtohisfeedbackallowed
us to create our final storyboardwhichhadthe exactshotwe were doing, how longitneededtolast
and whateditsandtransitionswe were usinginbetweenthe shotstokeepcontinuity.
We thenwentoutto filmandbeganeditingourmusicvideo
whichwe regularlyshowedtothe class(full of ourtarget
audience) togettheiropinionsonhow itislookingandany
criticismscanhelpusto improve ouridea.For ourfirst
feedbacksessionwe onlyhadthe lastdancingscene toshow
everyone butwe managedtoachieve some feedbackonwhat
theythought.Theysuggestedthatitwasverycinematicand
lookedprofessional,theyalsolikedthe overlay(extraFreya)
because itmade the scene lookmore dramaticand powerful
showingmore emotionthroughit.However,some peoplesuggestedthatitwastoo dark andthey
didn’tunderstandthe storyline (whichwasn’tanissue aswe onlyhadthat shot). We wenton toturn
downthe contrast of the filtertomake itlighterandtherefore easiertosee the dancer.
For our nextfeedbacksessionourmusicvideowasalmost
complete whichallowedustogetmore opinionsabout
the audienceslikesanddislikes.People now saidthatthey
likedthe conceptbehindthe videowithitgoingfrom
colourto blackand white duringortime-lapse.Theyalso
like the swingscene especiallywhere itfadestoMilly
swingingalone andinslowmotionbecause itsignifiesthe
relationshipfadingawayandheremotionsaboutthis.The drivingshotswere saidtomatchthe
musicand be in time whichmakesthemappearmore professionalandcinematic addingeffectto
the video. The focuspull wasalsolikedbecause itallowsthe audiencetoconnectto Milly’semotions
nowthat she is feeling alone. The slow motionsof FreyadancingrepresentsMilly’semotionswhen
she isalone and whenthe videoisatnormal pace itreflectshermoodwhentheyare together

Ben.However, theysaidthata fewshotsappearedtobe too dark due to the filterincludedwhich
we easilysortedoutbyloweringthe contrastof it.
We thenshowedourvideotojustone memberof ourtarget audience togatherprecise opinionsof
it.He saidthat he lovedthe lyricand imagerymatchthat we have includedthroughoutourmusic
videoandhe likedthe sense of enigmadue tothe breakuphappeningwithinthe dreamleavingthe
audience toguesswhetheritreallyhappenedornot. He alsolovedthe monochrome usage ashe
saidti addseffecttothe videoandit helpstoportray the characters emotionsthroughoutthe video.
The slowmotionsincludedonacouple of shotsmatchedthe
slowpace to the song whichhe againsaidportrayedthe
emotions. However,he didn’tunderstandthe shakycamera
shotswithinthe woodsandhe didn’tunderstandthe static
vs trackingshotswithinthe dancingscenes.The shakyshots
helpstoshowthat Millywasweakand notstable without
Benbeingthere withhersothe handheldhelpedtoshow
emotiontothe audience. The staticandtrackingshots withinthe dancingscenesmade the piece
more cinematicinour opinionandhelpedtoshow the emotionthrougharange of shots. So we then
decidedtokeepthese shots howtheywere aswe thoughtthattheyaddedeffecttothe videoand
thiswas the onlynegative feedbackwe receivedaboutthem.
We thengot people fromotherclassesthatare alsopart of our target audience todecide which
endinglookedthe bestonourvideoandhow muchoverlaywe should include onthe final dancing
shot.We foundthatthe majorityof people preferredMillywalkingonthe beachoverlaywithFreya
than the one withthe car headlights.Theyalsosaidthatthe endingwouldbe betterwithout the
bedroomscenesandthe phone focuspull.Fromthiswe decidedtoaddthe extraoverlaytothe
dancingscene because theysaidittiedtogetherthe wholevideoandemphasisedtothe audience
that Millywasfeelingaloneanddistantfromeveryone,we alsocompletelytookawaythe ending
and leftthe videowhere the dancingscenefinishedtocreate more enigmaandthe dancingscenes
lookedmore professionalandbetterqualitythanthe bedroomscenes.
Afterthat we movedonto the ancillarytasksandwent
back to the videolateronto do the final improvements.
Joshand I draftedupsome ideasforthe albumcover
and the advertfor our musicvideoandgotfeedback
fromthe classas to whichideawouldbestsuitourgenre
and relate tothe band we have chosen. The majorityof
the class preferredthe twopeople’ssilhouettesforthe
back coverwhere the track listcan thengo downin
betweenthe figures.Forthe fronttheypreferredthe
image of the couple huggingonthe bridge butwe thoughtthat theywouldn’tmatchso decidedto
go withthe image of Milly’sface tothe rightof the coveras it will show more brandidentityandthe
coverwon’tbe overloaded.Asthisgenre isaboutnature the classdecidedthata simple nature shot
wouldlookeffectiveforthe inside coverbutatthispointwe weren’tentirelysure thiswouldlook
effectiveandwe didn’twanttodiscard the ideaincludingthe againstthe tree trunk.Fromthiswe
Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
thoughtwe wouldtothe silhouette image onthe backwitha close upof Millyonthe front,so we
realisedwe neededtogooutto take more images.
We thenwentonto show our finisheddigipaktothe
classto get theiropinions.Manypeoplesuggested
that itlookedveryprofessional andthe fontandfont
positionandimageschosenis suitableforourgenre.
Theyalsolikedthe finishedlookof the imageswith
the filterincludedasitmakesthemmore suitable for
our genre.However,theysaidthatthe positionof the
legal informationwaswrongandit waspotentially
too small.Also,suggestedmovingthe barcode but
we foundboththe barcode andlegal informationwas
alreadyina correct positiontofitconventionsof this
genre sowe decidedtokeeptheminthe same place.
We didhowevermake the legal informationalittle
biggerlike suggested.The fontonthe spine wasalso
saidto looka little stretched whichwe quicklysortedout.Theyquestionedthe positionof the album
title aswell sowe decidedtomove itunderthe bandname butmake it smallersothe audience
knowsthe bandis more importantthanthe albumtitle.
We thenwentonto show our final ancillariesdesignsto
the rest of the class inorderto get theirfinal feedback.
Theysaidtheylikedthe filterthatwe appliedonthe
imagesbecause theysuitthe genre.Theyimagesused
were alsogenre suitable andlookedveryprofessional.
Theyalsolikedthe factthat we includedthe albumcover
on our promotional posterbecauseitessentially
promoteditmore.We had brand identitythroughout
our pieceswhichwasalsoliked. The inside CDcoverwas
likedasthe image wasveryeffective andagainfittedin
withour genre.Eventhoughthe backwas simple and
plainitwas still saidtobe effective andagainrepresentsourgenre. The fontstyle andposition
suitedthe genre andthe white stoodoutagainstthe blackbackground
and the fact the band name wasbig andboldallowedittobe noticed
more.However,itwassuggestedthatwe shouldmaybe include alittle bit
more informationonthe advertsopossible include awebsiteorsome
reviewsof the band. We decidedagainstthisaswe thoughtwithus
havinga busyimage on itthe advertwouldbecome toopackedwith
thingsto lookat. They alsothoughtthe LG onthe spine wasa little bittoo
bigbut we decidedthatbecause itisthe band name itshouldbe bigand
eye catchingso we keptitthe same size. The fontonthe advertand
digipakwasdifferentwhichtookawaythe brandidentitysowe change
Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
the advertfontto match the digipakone asthat wasmore suitedtoour genre.Changingthis
allowed ustoproduce our final ancillaries.
Aftercompletingthe ancillarieswe showedwhatwe thoughtwasoutfinal music
videotothe whole classandreceivedfeedbackonwhattheylikedanddisliked.A lot
of the feedbacksaidthe time-lapseatthe beginningof the videohelpedtoaddeffect
to it andallowedthe audience tounderstandif itwasa dreamor not.The also liked
the overlayincludedonthe Freyadancingshotbecause itaddseffecttothe songand
videoandmakesitlookmore cinematicandalsomade the storyline more effective.
The tempoof our editingmatchedthe tempoof the songwhichmake itappearmore
professionalandmake the videomore effective. The monochromecolours isalsoan
effectivewaytoshowthe audience thatwe have followedthe dreamconceptandaddsmore
emotiontothe video. The editingingeneral wasconsideredeffectiveaswell asthe lighting
suggestingthattheyrepresentthe genre well.Manypeople likedthe swingshotespeciallywhenit
fadesto Millyalone asithelpstocapture heremotionsnow thatherrelationshipisfallingapart
especiallywithitbeinginslowmotion.The regulardancingscenesalsohelpedtomake the video
appearmore cinematic. The overall narrative of the videowassaidtobe very effectiveandfittedin
well withthe genre andespeciallythe dreamconcept. However, people saidthatitwastoo shaky
whenfilmingthe walkingsceneswithinthe woodsbutwe didthisintentionallytoshow how Milly
feltwhenshe wasalone- unstable. We alsofoundthatafterthe renderingsome dancingscenes
were toodark and the overlaiddancingscene wastoolightsowe had to spenda little time messing
aroundwiththe opacityand contrast of the filterstomake itrightfor us. We alsowantedtosee if
the class likedthe original endingof ourmusicvideobuttheyalsosaidto take it outbut replace it
withsomethingelseratherthanjustendingonthe dancingscene.Sowe decidedtoenditwiththe
same time-lapsewe beginwithandfade itout fromblackand white tocolourto show realityagain.
Once done we publishedittoYouTube hopingforconstructive commentsonwhatotherpeople
thoughtcouldbe changedor what theyliked. However, thatdidn’tgotoplanas we receivedno
commentsbutwe got a like.Sowe decidedtoemail afew teachers andgettheiropiniononit
instead.BeginningwithMrsGalloway, she saidshe lovedthe songandthe emotive aspectsit
creates. She alsosaidwe have createda powerful responsebyusingdifferent
settingsaswe movedthroughthe videobutshe didfeel there are times
withinourvideothatwe didn’tneedtochange locationorthe lack of change
made her questionthe symbolismattimes- the birds.Butshe overall though
it wasa powerful video.
Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
Mr Porterthenwenton tosay that he likedita lotand the music andimagesworkedwell together
withthe pace of the visualsbeingwellmatched,
remindinghimof avideohe likesbyRadiohead-
particualrythe dancerand monochrome colours.The
swingscene waspoweful andthe slowmotionwassued
well allowingemotionstobe shown. The differentlight
and dark elementsincludedwithinourvideoworked
well together- carlightsinthe nightlightingandthe
mergedscene of the birdsat the endworkedwelll.
However,he didn’treallylike the fadinginof blackand
white onthe time-lapseashe wasn’tconvincedthatit
workedinshowingthe dreamconcept.
Mrs Peacocksaidthat itwas beautiful towatchandshe lovedit. She particularlylikedthe transition
of shotsmatchingthe transitionof music. The contrastlateron of the melancholictone inthe music
comparedto the happyscneesof seaside scene is
interesting.She alsothoughtthatthe narrative was
reallyclearandmatchedthe lyricswell.Lovedthe
cyclial nature of the shots- beginningandending
withthe skytime-lapse.
Mr Healysaidit wasveryimpressiveandhe loved
the openingtransitionfromclearskytocloudsbeing
blackand white- itsetthe moodof the videowell.
The black and white footage of the dancerwasuse
excellentlythroughoutthe video.The carheadlights
and transitionsbetweenthe anglesof the shotswere
verywell done andhe likedthe use of the slow motion
withinthe swingscene. He saidwe hada gooduse of
contrast withthe character walkingonthe beachand he
likedthe focuspull withthe chatacterwalkingonthe
beach.He alsolovedthe overlaidimageswiththe
dancermirroeredandshotsfromearlierinthe video
and the endingwasreallyeffective withusreversingthe opening sequencewiththe time-lapse.
However,he thoughtthe camerawasa little shakyandthere wasmaybe a little bittoomuchglare
on the shotwiththe couple walkingthroughthe woods- butthe shakinesswasusedtoshow her
unstabilityandthere wasn’tmuch we coulddoaboutthe glare due to the available timewe had
withinthe day.
Mr Taylorreallylikedthe videoandhe feelsitfitswellwiththe music. He also, thoughtthe
compositionsof the imagesworkedreallywellespeciallythe blendingof the transitions. He likedthe
subdude lightingtomatchthe emotionsof the musicbutthoughtthe dancingscenesshouldbe a
little bitlightersothat herface and facial expressionscouldbe seen- however,we didn’twanther
face to be shownasshe wasn’tthe same actor.
Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree
Mr Higginssaidthathe likedthe fadingtransitionsforthe walkingonthe beachscene- itshowed
progressionintime effecitvely. He also saidthe stle of dancingworkswell withthe genre andtone of
the song andthe simplisticnature of each scene workedwelltobackthat up. However,he wenton
to be quite critical insayingthathe wasn’tsure of the teme of the videothinkingitgetsa bitlost-
but we haventreceivedthisfeedbackfromanyone elsethathaswatchedthe videosodecidedthat
it wasn’tthatmuch of an issue. He alsosuggestedthatthe dancingwasa bitdark and therefore
difficulttosee attimeswhichwe wouldagree withandif we were tofilmagainwe wouldmake sure
the dance wasperformedmore inthe spotlight. The camera stabilitywsalsowobblywhenthe
characters are walkinginthe woods- thiswashard forus to achieve anentirelysmoothshotwith
the equiptmentwe hadtohand, and alsowhenMillywaswalkingalone we wantedahandheldlook
to the camerato showherunstabilitywithoutBen.He alsosuggestedthatthe scene transitions
couldbe a bitmore in time withthe rythemandcountof the song andhave the scenesfade into
each othermore subtlywhichwouldmatchthe music- thisagainwasn’tcriticisedbyanyone else
that we showedthe videotobutwe didget praisesonour editingandtransitionssowe aren’t
planningonmakinganotherchangesorregrettingthattheydon’tflow correctly.
Overall fromall of the teacherfeedbackthatwe receivedwe foundthatitwasmainlypositive with
thempraisingourblackand white filterasitshowedemotionsaswell asthe dancingscenes.The
swingscene andbeachwalkingscene wasalsolikedbythe majorityof people. However, few said
aboutthe lightingandgettinglostin the story. If we were todo thisagainwe wouldreshootthe
dancingscenestoget the bestlightingbutwe don’tfeel like we neededtochange thingsinorderto
make the storyline flowmore as we thinkthatthere wasn’tanissue there.
In conclusion, the partsof our videothatpeople likedthe bestwasthe dreamconceptincludedasit
isquite an original idea, the dancingscenesastheyare a powerful waytosetthe moodof the song
and therefore odthe videotoo. The swingscene andbeachwalkingscene especiallywhenitfadesto
Millywalkingalone wereoftenpraisedbecause the focuspullandslow motionmake the emotions
of the charactersclear and therefore emphasis
the emotionsbehindthe video.The overlayon
the last dancingscene wasalsofavoured
because ittiedtogetherwhatthe videowas
aboutand it isverydramatic inshowingthe
emotionstothe audience. The audience seem
to not like the lightingof afewof the dancing
scenesbecause itisoccasionallytoodarkfor
themto see.Also,we receivedafew
commentsonthe shakyshots that we included, the one wherethe couple are togetherwasn’t
intendedtobe shakybutit wasveryhard for itnot to be as we hadto walkalongwiththemso the
camera wouldgetourfootstepmovement, however, the one withMillyalone wasintendedtobe a
little shakytoshowthat she hasbecome unstable now thatshe isalone andisn’tfunctioning
corectlywithoutBen.If we were tofilmthisagainwe would obviosulyrefilmthe dancingshotsand
make sure Freyadancedin the spotlightsothe sceneswouldn’tappearasdark. We wouldalsohave
boughta sliderforus to be able to dothe walkingshotwithoutthe shakinessof the cameraand
therefore ourvideowouldhave amore professionalfinishtoit. We couldhave alsogone our filming
indifferentareawhichhadbetterlandscape tomake ourvideolookmore cinematicandagain
professional.

Evaluation question three

  • 1. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree What have you learned from your audience feedback? Gatheringour targetaudience’s opinionsonourmusicvideoandancillarytextsisimportantforusto be able to produce the most effective products.Thiswouldthenallow ustobe able tomake more our productsmore successful aswe respondedcorrectlytothe expectations, likesanddislikesand desiresof productsfromthe indie/dreampopgenre. We establishwhoourtargetaudience wasfromdoing arange of differentsecondaryresearch. As our genre isa hybridwe foundthat the primarygenderisbothmale andfemale asthe males was more the indie side of the genre andthe female wasthe popand dreampart. We also foundthatthe mainage to base our productsat wouldbe for16-25 yearoldsand the secondaryage wouldbe 40 yearsold. The main ethnicitytobase ourproductson isprimarilywhite people butthe secondary target audience wasAsians. We thenwentonto do primaryresearchso we conductedtarget audience interviewsandemailedaroundtogatherfeedbackon our productsand to findoutmore about whatwe shouldinclude withinourmusicvideoandancillarytextstomake itsuitour target audience andmore importantlywhatwe shouldavoid includingsowe can stayaway frommakingcliché products. From our targetaudience interviewswe foundthatmanypeople thoughthe songwasquite hardto understandsowe wouldhave tomake it obviouswithinourvideowhatwe are tryingtointerpret and that the songbecame veryrepetitive. The majorityof people suggestedthattheypreferred entirelynarrative basedvideoswithamplificationso that itcan be relatedtothe song and itwill emphasise the meaningof the lyrics. Theyalsosaidthat the theme and conceptbehindourvideoideawasfittingtothe genre andit portrayedthe lyricsto the songwell. The negotiatedendingof ourvideowasalsolikedbecauseit allowsfordifferentopinionsonthe videoandnotjusta setending.Almosteveryonethatwe interviewedsaidthattheylikedthe blackandwhite filterwe are goingto use to showthat the videoisa dreambecause itsubtlyshowstothe audience thatitis a dreamwithoutgivingtoomuchaway,it alsocreatescontrastbetweenthe setting (beach-white and the woods-black). We were alsowarnedthatwe neededtofocusonlightingbecause we wantedto filmat nightbutit still neededtobe lightenoughforthe audience tobe able tosee whatisgoingon. From thisfeedbackwe decidedtocut out the middle partof the songwhere itbecame very repetitivetostoppeople losinginterestinourproduct. We alsodecidedtodo an entirelynarrative basedvideotoagaintry and keeppeople interestedand make itamplificationsothatthe meaning of the videoemphasisesthe meaningof the lyricsandthen that wouldmake the songmuch easierforpeople to understand. We alsocheckedthe nightbefore filmingwhenit begangoingdark so we knew whattime toheadout the next day sothat the lightingonourvideowon’tbe toodark forthe audience.
  • 2. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree Afterconductingthe targetaudience interviewswe alsopitchedourideastothe classwhichwas againfull of our target audience. Theyfirstof all saidthatourconcept forthe music videowasvery creative especiallybecause we have the dreamvsrealityidea.Theyalsothoughtthatthe storyline was veryunique andoriginal becauseeventhough relationshipvideosare conventional forthisgenre we decidedtobase the relationshipwithinadreamwhich isnot conventional.Furthermore, theylikedthatwe have a couple withinourvideothatispart of the target audience because theysuggestedthatthatwoulddraw more people in astheycan connectto the video. Our unique camerashots(like the one outof the back of a car) waspraisedbyeveryone astheythought it wouldbe the bestwayto showthe emotionsof the charactersincludedandtherefore itwill help the audience toconnectto the videomore. The mise-en-scenewe consideredtoincludewassaidto be significantasitshowsthe actors in everydayclothingwhichshowsthe audience thateveryone facesthese relationshipissueswhichwouldagainallowthemtoconnecttothe actors. The colour and locationcontrastwassaid to showthe goodand the bad parts withinarelationshipinsteadof justfocusingonthe good parts whichmanyvideoswithin thisgenre tendto include. However, theydidsaythatwe neededtomake sure thatour sceneswere toodark and some of our ideaswere seentobe veryambiguouswhich couldlookcheap. To make our videomore effective we wentoutthe nightbefore we plannedtofilmtocheck whenitbeganto get darkand to see whetherthe shots wouldlookgoodinthe lightingthatwe decidedon. We alsomade sure we knewexactlyhowwe were goingtotake our‘ambiguous’shottostop complicationswhenwe wentouttofilmandtherefore notime waswasted. We alsousedJosh’s camera so thatit was of higherqualityandashe had more experience withusingit, itwaseasierto achieve the more technical shots. Afterrespondingtothe pitchfeedbackandtweakingourideassoitwas preferredmore we wenton to draft outa storyboardof the narrative of our video. The mainfeedbackwasthe dancingscenes lookedverycinematicanditwas a unique wasto signifylove.Theyalsolikedthe factthatthe scene change was symbolisedbythe car scene whichisagainoriginal tothis genre. The focuspull (onthe beach) wassaidto be creative andunique as it helpsthe audience tounderstandMilly’semotionswhenshe is alone showingshe feelsdetachedanddistantwithoutBen.Withinour original endingwe includedafocuspull onthe phone screenas well (whichwe latercut due to audience opinions) whichwasalsosaidtobe creative asit showsthe importance of the message onthe screen. The shotswe were planningonusingwasalsoseentobe creative andithelpsthe audience tounderstandthe atmospherewithinthe video. The colourchange to black andwhite wasthoughtto be a unique wayto showthe audience thatthe videoisbasedona dreambut it didn’tnecessarilygiveitaway. However, peoplewere still suggestingthatourshotswere too ambiguous andif notdone correctlyit will take awaythe

Respondingtohisfeedbackallowed us to create our final storyboardwhichhadthe exactshotwe were doing, how longitneededtolast and whateditsandtransitionswe were usinginbetweenthe shotstokeepcontinuity. We thenwentoutto filmandbeganeditingourmusicvideo whichwe regularlyshowedtothe class(full of ourtarget audience) togettheiropinionsonhow itislookingandany criticismscanhelpusto improve ouridea. For ourfirst feedbacksessionwe onlyhadthe lastdancingscene toshow everyone butwe managedtoachieve some feedbackonwhat theythought.Theysuggestedthatitwasverycinematicand lookedprofessional, theyalsolikedthe overlay(extraFreya) because itmade the scene lookmore dramaticand powerful showingmore emotionthroughit. However, some peoplesuggestedthatitwastoo dark andthey didn’tunderstandthe storyline (whichwasn’tanissue aswe onlyhadthat shot). We wenton toturn downthe contrast of the filtertomake itlighterandtherefore easiertosee the dancer. For our nextfeedbacksessionourmusicvideowasalmost complete whichallowedustogetmore opinionsabout the audienceslikesanddislikes.People now saidthatthey likedthe conceptbehindthe videowithitgoingfrom colourto blackand white duringortime-lapse.Theyalso like the swingscene especiallywhere itfadestoMilly swingingalone andinslowmotionbecause itsignifiesthe relationshipfadingawayandheremotionsaboutthis. The drivingshotswere saidtomatchthe musicand be in time whichmakesthemappearmore professionalandcinematic addingeffectto the video. The focuspull wasalsolikedbecause itallowsthe audiencetoconnectto Milly’semotions nowthat she is feeling alone. The slow motionsof FreyadancingrepresentsMilly’semotionswhen she isalone and whenthe videoisatnormal pace itreflectshermoodwhentheyare together allowingthe audience tofeel sorryforMillyasthe videoallowsthemtoconnecttoher more than
  • 4. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree Ben.However, theysaidthata fewshotsappearedtobe too dark due to the filterincludedwhich we easilysortedoutbyloweringthe contrastof it. We thenshowedourvideotojustone memberof ourtarget audience togatherprecise opinionsof it.He saidthat he lovedthe lyricand imagerymatchthat we have includedthroughoutourmusic videoandhe likedthe sense of enigmadue tothe breakuphappeningwithinthe dreamleavingthe audience toguesswhetheritreallyhappenedornot. He alsolovedthe monochrome usage ashe saidti addseffecttothe videoandit helpstoportray the characters emotionsthroughoutthe video. The slowmotionsincludedonacouple of shotsmatchedthe slowpace to the song whichhe againsaidportrayedthe emotions. However,he didn’tunderstandthe shakycamera shotswithinthe woodsandhe didn’tunderstandthe static vs trackingshotswithinthe dancingscenes. The shakyshots helpstoshowthat Millywasweakand notstable without Benbeingthere withhersothe handheldhelpedtoshow emotiontothe audience. The staticandtrackingshots withinthe dancingscenesmade the piece more cinematicinour opinionandhelpedtoshow the emotionthrougharange of shots. So we then decidedtokeepthese shots howtheywere aswe thoughtthattheyaddedeffecttothe videoand thiswas the onlynegative feedbackwe receivedaboutthem. We thengot people fromotherclassesthatare alsopart of our target audience todecide which endinglookedthe bestonourvideoandhow muchoverlaywe should include onthe final dancing shot.We foundthatthe majorityof people preferredMillywalkingonthe beachoverlaywithFreya than the one withthe car headlights.Theyalsosaidthatthe endingwouldbe betterwithout the bedroomscenesandthe phone focuspull.Fromthiswe decidedtoaddthe extraoverlaytothe dancingscene because theysaidittiedtogetherthe wholevideoandemphasisedtothe audience that Millywasfeelingaloneanddistantfromeveryone,we alsocompletelytookawaythe ending and leftthe videowhere the dancingscenefinishedtocreate more enigmaandthe dancingscenes lookedmore professionalandbetterqualitythanthe bedroomscenes. Afterthat we movedonto the ancillarytasksandwent back to the videolateronto do the final improvements. Joshand I draftedupsome ideasforthe albumcover and the advertfor our musicvideoandgotfeedback fromthe classas to whichideawouldbestsuitourgenre and relate tothe band we have chosen. The majorityof the class preferredthe twopeople’ssilhouettesforthe back coverwhere the track listcan thengo downin betweenthe figures.Forthe fronttheypreferredthe image of the couple huggingonthe bridge butwe thoughtthat theywouldn’tmatchso decidedto go withthe image of Milly’sface tothe rightof the coveras it will show more brandidentityandthe coverwon’tbe overloaded.Asthisgenre isaboutnature the classdecidedthata simple nature shot wouldlookeffectiveforthe inside coverbutatthispointwe weren’tentirelysure thiswouldlook effectiveandwe didn’twanttodiscard the ideaincludingthe againstthe tree trunk.Fromthiswe
  • 5. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree thoughtwe wouldtothe silhouette image onthe backwitha close upof Millyonthe front,so we realisedwe neededtogooutto take more images. We thenwentonto show our finisheddigipaktothe classto get theiropinions.Manypeoplesuggested that itlookedveryprofessional andthe fontandfont positionandimageschosenis suitableforourgenre. Theyalsolikedthe finishedlookof the imageswith the filterincludedasitmakesthemmore suitable for our genre. However, theysaidthatthe positionof the legal informationwaswrongandit waspotentially too small. Also, suggestedmovingthe barcode but we foundboththe barcode andlegal informationwas alreadyina correct positiontofitconventionsof this genre sowe decidedtokeeptheminthe same place. We didhowevermake the legal informationalittle biggerlike suggested. The fontonthe spine wasalso saidto looka little stretched whichwe quicklysortedout.Theyquestionedthe positionof the album title aswell sowe decidedtomove itunderthe bandname butmake it smallersothe audience knowsthe bandis more importantthanthe albumtitle. We thenwentonto show our final ancillariesdesignsto the rest of the class inorderto get theirfinal feedback. Theysaidtheylikedthe filterthatwe appliedonthe imagesbecause theysuitthe genre.Theyimagesused were alsogenre suitable andlookedveryprofessional. Theyalsolikedthe factthat we includedthe albumcover on our promotional posterbecauseitessentially promoteditmore. We had brand identitythroughout our pieceswhichwasalsoliked. The inside CDcoverwas likedasthe image wasveryeffective andagainfittedin withour genre.Eventhoughthe backwas simple and plainitwas still saidtobe effective andagainrepresentsourgenre. The fontstyle andposition suitedthe genre andthe white stoodoutagainstthe blackbackground and the fact the band name wasbig andboldallowedittobe noticed more. However, itwassuggestedthatwe shouldmaybe include alittle bit more informationonthe advertsopossible include awebsiteorsome reviewsof the band. We decidedagainstthisaswe thoughtwithus havinga busyimage on itthe advertwouldbecome toopackedwith thingsto lookat. They alsothoughtthe LG onthe spine wasa little bittoo bigbut we decidedthatbecause itisthe band name itshouldbe bigand eye catchingso we keptitthe same size. The fontonthe advertand digipakwasdifferentwhichtookawaythe brandidentitysowe change
  • 6. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree the advertfontto match the digipakone asthat wasmore suitedtoour genre.Changingthis allowed ustoproduce our final ancillaries. Aftercompletingthe ancillarieswe showedwhatwe thoughtwasoutfinal music videotothe whole classandreceivedfeedbackonwhattheylikedanddisliked.A lot of the feedbacksaidthe time-lapseatthe beginningof the videohelpedtoaddeffect to it andallowedthe audience tounderstandif itwasa dreamor not.The also liked the overlayincludedonthe Freyadancingshotbecause itaddseffecttothe songand videoandmakesitlookmore cinematicandalsomade the storyline more effective. The tempoof our editingmatchedthe tempoof the songwhichmake itappearmore professionalandmake the videomore effective. The monochromecolours isalsoan effectivewaytoshowthe audience thatwe have followedthe dreamconceptandaddsmore emotiontothe video. The editingingeneral wasconsideredeffectiveaswell asthe lighting suggestingthattheyrepresentthe genre well.Manypeople likedthe swingshotespeciallywhenit fadesto Millyalone asithelpstocapture heremotionsnow thatherrelationshipisfallingapart especiallywithitbeinginslowmotion. The regulardancingscenesalsohelpedtomake the video appearmore cinematic. The overall narrative of the videowassaidtobe very effectiveandfittedin well withthe genre andespeciallythe dreamconcept. However, people saidthatitwastoo shaky whenfilmingthe walkingsceneswithinthe woodsbutwe didthisintentionallytoshow how Milly feltwhenshe wasalone- unstable. We alsofoundthatafterthe renderingsome dancingscenes were toodark and the overlaiddancingscene wastoolightsowe had to spenda little time messing aroundwiththe opacityand contrast of the filterstomake itrightfor us. We alsowantedtosee if the class likedthe original endingof ourmusicvideobuttheyalsosaidto take it outbut replace it withsomethingelseratherthanjustendingonthe dancingscene.Sowe decidedtoenditwiththe same time-lapsewe beginwithandfade itout fromblackand white tocolourto show realityagain. Once done we publishedittoYouTube hopingforconstructive commentsonwhatotherpeople thoughtcouldbe changedor what theyliked. However, thatdidn’tgotoplanas we receivedno commentsbutwe got a like.Sowe decidedtoemail afew teachers andgettheiropiniononit instead.BeginningwithMrsGalloway, she saidshe lovedthe songandthe emotive aspectsit creates. She alsosaidwe have createda powerful responsebyusingdifferent settingsaswe movedthroughthe videobutshe didfeel there are times withinourvideothatwe didn’tneedtochange locationorthe lack of change made her questionthe symbolismattimes- the birds.Butshe overall though it wasa powerful video.
  • 7. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree Mr Porterthenwenton tosay that he likedita lotand the music andimagesworkedwell together withthe pace of the visualsbeingwellmatched, remindinghimof avideohe likesbyRadiohead- particualrythe dancerand monochrome colours. The swingscene waspoweful andthe slowmotionwassued well allowingemotionstobe shown. The differentlight and dark elementsincludedwithinourvideoworked well together- carlightsinthe nightlightingandthe mergedscene of the birdsat the endworkedwelll. However,he didn’treallylike the fadinginof blackand white onthe time-lapseashe wasn’tconvincedthatit workedinshowingthe dreamconcept. Mrs Peacocksaidthat itwas beautiful towatchandshe lovedit. She particularlylikedthe transition of shotsmatchingthe transitionof music. The contrastlateron of the melancholictone inthe music comparedto the happyscneesof seaside scene is interesting. She alsothoughtthatthe narrative was reallyclearandmatchedthe lyricswell.Lovedthe cyclial nature of the shots- beginningandending withthe skytime-lapse. Mr Healysaidit wasveryimpressiveandhe loved the openingtransitionfromclearskytocloudsbeing blackand white- itsetthe moodof the videowell. The black and white footage of the dancerwasuse excellentlythroughoutthe video. The carheadlights and transitionsbetweenthe anglesof the shotswere verywell done andhe likedthe use of the slow motion withinthe swingscene. He saidwe hada gooduse of contrast withthe character walkingonthe beachand he likedthe focuspull withthe chatacterwalkingonthe beach. He alsolovedthe overlaidimageswiththe dancermirroeredandshotsfromearlierinthe video and the endingwasreallyeffective withusreversingthe opening sequencewiththe time-lapse. However,he thoughtthe camerawasa little shakyandthere wasmaybe a little bittoomuchglare on the shotwiththe couple walkingthroughthe woods- butthe shakinesswasusedtoshow her unstabilityandthere wasn’tmuch we coulddoaboutthe glare due to the available timewe had withinthe day. Mr Taylorreallylikedthe videoandhe feelsitfitswellwiththe music. He also, thoughtthe compositionsof the imagesworkedreallywellespeciallythe blendingof the transitions. He likedthe subdude lightingtomatchthe emotionsof the musicbutthoughtthe dancingscenesshouldbe a little bitlightersothat herface and facial expressionscouldbe seen- however,we didn’twanther face to be shownasshe wasn’tthe same actor.
  • 8. Rhiannon Troop EvaluationQuestionThree Mr Higginssaidthathe likedthe fadingtransitionsforthe walkingonthe beachscene- itshowed progressionintime effecitvely. He also saidthe stle of dancingworkswell withthe genre andtone of the song andthe simplisticnature of each scene workedwelltobackthat up. However,he wenton to be quite critical insayingthathe wasn’tsure of the teme of the videothinkingitgetsa bitlost- but we haventreceivedthisfeedbackfromanyone elsethathaswatchedthe videosodecidedthat it wasn’tthatmuch of an issue. He alsosuggestedthatthe dancingwasa bitdark and therefore difficulttosee attimeswhichwe wouldagree withandif we were tofilmagainwe wouldmake sure the dance wasperformedmore inthe spotlight. The camera stabilitywsalsowobblywhenthe characters are walkinginthe woods- thiswashard forus to achieve anentirelysmoothshotwith the equiptmentwe hadtohand, and alsowhenMillywaswalkingalone we wantedahandheldlook to the camerato showherunstabilitywithoutBen.He alsosuggestedthatthe scene transitions couldbe a bitmore in time withthe rythemandcountof the song andhave the scenesfade into each othermore subtlywhichwouldmatchthe music- thisagainwasn’tcriticisedbyanyone else that we showedthe videotobutwe didget praisesonour editingandtransitionssowe aren’t planningonmakinganotherchangesorregrettingthattheydon’tflow correctly. Overall fromall of the teacherfeedbackthatwe receivedwe foundthatitwasmainlypositive with thempraisingourblackand white filterasitshowedemotionsaswell asthe dancingscenes. The swingscene andbeachwalkingscene wasalsolikedbythe majorityof people. However, few said aboutthe lightingandgettinglostin the story. If we were todo thisagainwe wouldreshootthe dancingscenestoget the bestlightingbutwe don’tfeel like we neededtochange thingsinorderto make the storyline flowmore as we thinkthatthere wasn’tanissue there. In conclusion, the partsof our videothatpeople likedthe bestwasthe dreamconceptincludedasit isquite an original idea, the dancingscenesastheyare a powerful waytosetthe moodof the song and therefore odthe videotoo. The swingscene andbeachwalkingscene especiallywhenitfadesto Millywalkingalone wereoftenpraisedbecause the focuspullandslow motionmake the emotions of the charactersclear and therefore emphasis the emotionsbehindthe video. The overlayon the last dancingscene wasalsofavoured because ittiedtogetherwhatthe videowas aboutand it isverydramatic inshowingthe emotionstothe audience. The audience seem to not like the lightingof afewof the dancing scenesbecause itisoccasionallytoodarkfor themto see. Also,we receivedafew commentsonthe shakyshots that we included, the one wherethe couple are togetherwasn’t intendedtobe shakybutit wasveryhard for itnot to be as we hadto walkalongwiththemso the camera wouldgetourfootstepmovement, however, the one withMillyalone wasintendedtobe a little shakytoshowthat she hasbecome unstable now thatshe isalone andisn’tfunctioning corectlywithoutBen.If we were tofilmthisagainwe would obviosulyrefilmthe dancingshotsand make sure Freyadancedin the spotlightsothe sceneswouldn’tappearasdark. We wouldalsohave boughta sliderforus to be able to dothe walkingshotwithoutthe shakinessof the cameraand therefore ourvideowouldhave amore professionalfinishtoit. We couldhave alsogone our filming indifferentareawhichhadbetterlandscape tomake ourvideolookmore cinematicandagain professional.
