Evaluation Question 4How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
By Hannah Hopgood
Target Audience
 The target market for my magazine is

teenagers/young adults ranging from the ages
of 16-25 or older who has a passion for pop
punk/rock music as well as an interesting to find
out what upcoming artist are coming onto the
music scene. I got my target market through the
questionnaire I created on survey monkey that
showed me most the people who are in this age
range has a passion for this genre of music which
helped me decide what genre I should go for as it
had the best response from the audience
feedback. I also have a passion in this genre of
music which is very helpful as I can understand
that audiences needs and wants of the music
magazine as well as the basic iconography of this
Ethnicity
 Rock and rock Culture is seen as a western

culture industry as due to religious beliefs and
other countries cultures. The UK was brought up
on rock and roll due to the iconic stars such as
The Beatles taking global success and a world
wide spread of rock and roll culture. So we are a
country have a better understanding of rock and
roll industry as we have been brought up
surrounded by it, therefore my magazine would
be aimed at people of white ethnic, yet the
secondary audience are of any race because
they are more of a fan base understanding as
they see the artist and what to know more about
them to due to the connection they already have
established with them.
Representations
 My magazine represents the outcasts, people

who escape day to day life through music, their
escapism. These social groups to be people who
are strong and independent, with a rough look;
coloured hair, bright colours mixed with black and
white, body modifications publically on
display, heavy makeup etc. As the bands they
listen to make an influence on their lifestyles in
the terms of looks and the way in which they
interrupt the world.
Representations Cont..
 All my images show character in a sense of fun

loving or dark representing that this genre is a
mix of everything, it’s all about the way in which
the fans interrupt it. There is no one emotion
through these images they are all individual and
therefore have individual expressions and
emotions. I wanted my magazine to represent
that everyone is different so i did this through the
use of different photos. The images are
represented in a colourful way showing that the
music can be positive. Rather than everyone else
expectations of the genre, of it being moody and
dark all the time. I wanted to challenge this
Genre associations


When thinking about the genre I thought about
all the things that link to it such as live
performances, mosh pits, black and white with
bold colours, body modification and more, I
wanted to make my magazine appeal to this fan
base on all these levels as to build a strong
connection with the audience. I created these
ideas by using images with bold lighting or editing
them so they were darker, I also focused on the
mise n scene for the images such as the make up
being heavy a key iconography or rock music
Conclusion
 In conclusion my magazine represents different

social groups through the house style and colours
as well as the content inside, aimed at people
from that particular social group, targeting them
through their hobbits and interests such as body
modifications and pop punk/rock music genre.
