Question 4
How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation
stages?
RESEARCH
Google
 Google is a word wide, incredibly useful, search
engine.
 Google allowed me to easily find inspiration and
ideas for a short film by finding other individuals
short films alongside researching potential
plotline's, genres etc.
 Furthermore, I was able to navigate through a
vast array of websites when researching for
short films ideas.
IMDb
 IMDb was a useful tool in researching films as it
provided a broad range of new and old films
alongside rating and reviews.
 This allowed me to gather inspiration from
existing films as well as observe the faults and
strengths through ratings and reviews.
 IMDb was a fast, easy and resourceful website
with little to no problems.
BBFC
 The BBFC allowed me to research, into great depth
and detail, the history and background of film
classification.
 By doing so, I was able to consider the factors
involved in each age rating and link them to previous
story lines and ideas I had.
 In relation to our final product, the BBFC was useful in
confirming our set age rating and helped me develop
a deeper understanding as to what is involved in a
12A and how we could make our film, age
appropriate.
 The BBFC is highly reliable and there were no
problems in understanding and finding the information
we needed.
YouTube and Short of The
Week
 Both sites were the biggest help in coming up with new and fresh ideas.
 YouTube and short of the week are websites packed full of creative
individuals and cover a broad field of short films.
 Not only different genres, but variations of sub genre's were able to be
discovered.
 This allowed me to have a broader perspective, rather than planning for
a simple theme, we were able to expand our horizons and merge each
group members ideas together to create something out of the box, and
not your 'classic thriller'.
 However, one potential problem of this type of media technology is that
there is almost too much to choose from, this method was highly time
consuming.
 Although this is to be true, short of the week was slightly easier to
navigate as it had set categories for each genre and sub genre.
PLANNING
Blogger
 Blogger is essentially an online blog whereby we were able to record
all details of the research and planning process of our film.
 Blogger is useful as it helped keep all our information in one place
enabling us to stay organised and worry free.
 We used to blogger in order to create posts such as, location
photos, short film ideas, character profiles, to name a few.
 Furthermore, linking other tools such as slide share and prezi was
relatively easily and I found the labelling tool useful when separating
individual work to group work.
 However, as useful blogger may be, a big issue was it had a
tendency to crash alongside the inability to freely upload images.
 Overall, I would argue that blogger isn't the best online blogging
software out there but it does the job.
Celtx
 Celtx is a scripting software that we used in order to create
our rough drafts and final editions of the script to be used in
our short film.
 Celtx was very easy to use once understanding the technical
side of script writing.
 Celtx provided a very professional and clear script that was
able to be easily followed when shooting for the film.
 Furthermore, we are able to use this as an outlining method to
see how the idea for our film looked overall and where to
change dialogue in the final product.
 Although, we planned two versions of the script, we used the
script rather as a guideline and didn't always stick to it when
we felt it was best to add or take away dialogue
Facebook
 We took advantage of the social networking
site face book and created a group chat.
 We were able to share ideas, any worries
and concerns as well as update each other
on the progress of tasks.
 Furthermore we were able to plan the time
and location for which we would be filming.
 Face book was a convenient and fast way to
communicate through various technologies
such as mobile phone, laptops/computers,
ipads etc.
Word
 For our shot list and risk assessment
we used word with a premade template
in order to easily organise and plan out
shots to be used in the film.
 Due to being familiar with word and the
standard formatting of it, the shot list
and risk assessment were made
quickly without much hassle and
uploaded to blogger through
screenshots.
Filming and Editing
Canon Legria HFG25
 The Canon Legria HFG25 is a fairly standard, but high
quality camera with some advanced features.
 During filming we were able to get high definition content
with good quality audio.
 Features that were especially useful were auto focus and
zoom.
 The camera was very sturdy in regards to shakiness, the
quality of video was relatively high even when moved or
shaken.
 Our film turned out very professional looking even though it
wasn't necessarily a high end film camera.
Canon Legria HFG25
(Continued)
 However, it can be argued the camera
didn't take well to darkness, video's would
turn out slightly grainer than expected but
were still usable and of a decent standard.
 Furthermore, although usually stable, the
audio didn't pick up on dialogue but rather
on background noise , on a rare occasion.
 Overall this camera was more useful than
last years, the resolution being higher,
audio and video quality being higher and
finally larger storage space and battery
power.
Adobe Premier Pro
 Adobe premiere pro was the main featuring factor
of putting our film together as a highly rated editing
software.
 Premiere pro is a very reliable software with
numerous features, varying from the standard
cutting, cropping, adding music and effects, to more
advanced uses such as split screens, voice over's,
roll tool to name a few.
 Thanks to our familiarity with the software due to
last year's project and practice videos such as our
continuity video, we are able to edit with ease
knowing the basics of premiere pro , alongside
developing our knowledge by testing, through trial
and error, new techniques we'd previously failed to
try.
 Premier pro had many features that made our film
look of high quality and of a professional standard.
Adobe Premier Pro
(Continued)
 During arrangement of shots, the process was easy and took less
time as we had already had a basic skill set.
 Editing techniques such as jump cuts and elliptical editing were very
easy to implement because of this.
 Furthermore, the wide range of effects, made it easier to complete a
clear, smooth flowing film.
 As well as that title sequences, credits and music were
straightforward in putting together, and adding on, due to the
simplicity of the programme.
 However, an issue with this software was that often sound would go
missing from video clips as well as the programme crashing on a
regular basis.
 Although, the auto save feature was very practical, on more than one
occasion, whole scenes had to be re edited to a high standard which
was incredibly time consuming and a very unpredictable flaw in the
video editing software.
Photoshop
 During the creation of our film poster we used the editing
software Photoshop.
 Due to our lack of experience in photo editing, it was a
challenge that proved to be difficult.
 However, learning through tutorials on YouTube and
practicing using the various tools, we became more
confident in the programme allowing us to create a good
quality film poster with all the necessary components
needed.
 The programme got easier through trial and error and the
numerous features allowed us to create a clear and
professional film poster.
 However, the programme was complex in some ways that
basic features weren't available such as the simple 'undo'
which would have been helpful for amateur users.
EVALUATION
 Throughout the evaluation process I used numerous media
technologies.
 This involved tools such as slide share, prezi and blogger.
 Although were very useful resources they had their faults making the
evaluation process slightly more difficult than it should have been.
 All three had the same problems of crashing, or only working on a
specific a specific search engine.
 This was highly inconvenient as sometimes, slide share only
functioned well on Firefox which I wasn't able to access at home
creating a greater struggle.
 Furthermore, prezi had its occasions were a file would crash without
being saving, creating a more time consuming evaluation
experience due to having to recreate work, which thankfully I had
pre planned.
 Reiterating my point from before, blogger not only crashed but it was
difficult to upload images as the navigation wasn't as easy , as say a
word document.
 All technologies could have some improvements however, they
were only minor faults that could be overlooked and outweighed by

Evaluation Question 4

  • 1. Evaluation Question 4 How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
  • 3.
  • 4. Google  Google is a word wide, incredibly useful, search engine.  Google allowed me to easily find inspiration and ideas for a short film by finding other individuals short films alongside researching potential plotline's, genres etc.  Furthermore, I was able to navigate through a vast array of websites when researching for short films ideas.
  • 5. IMDb  IMDb was a useful tool in researching films as it provided a broad range of new and old films alongside rating and reviews.  This allowed me to gather inspiration from existing films as well as observe the faults and strengths through ratings and reviews.  IMDb was a fast, easy and resourceful website with little to no problems.
  • 6. BBFC  The BBFC allowed me to research, into great depth and detail, the history and background of film classification.  By doing so, I was able to consider the factors involved in each age rating and link them to previous story lines and ideas I had.  In relation to our final product, the BBFC was useful in confirming our set age rating and helped me develop a deeper understanding as to what is involved in a 12A and how we could make our film, age appropriate.  The BBFC is highly reliable and there were no problems in understanding and finding the information we needed.
  • 7. YouTube and Short of The Week  Both sites were the biggest help in coming up with new and fresh ideas.  YouTube and short of the week are websites packed full of creative individuals and cover a broad field of short films.  Not only different genres, but variations of sub genre's were able to be discovered.  This allowed me to have a broader perspective, rather than planning for a simple theme, we were able to expand our horizons and merge each group members ideas together to create something out of the box, and not your 'classic thriller'.  However, one potential problem of this type of media technology is that there is almost too much to choose from, this method was highly time consuming.  Although this is to be true, short of the week was slightly easier to navigate as it had set categories for each genre and sub genre.

  • 10. Blogger  Blogger is essentially an online blog whereby we were able to record all details of the research and planning process of our film.  Blogger is useful as it helped keep all our information in one place enabling us to stay organised and worry free.  We used to blogger in order to create posts such as, location photos, short film ideas, character profiles, to name a few.  Furthermore, linking other tools such as slide share and prezi was relatively easily and I found the labelling tool useful when separating individual work to group work.  However, as useful blogger may be, a big issue was it had a tendency to crash alongside the inability to freely upload images.  Overall, I would argue that blogger isn't the best online blogging software out there but it does the job.
  • 11. Celtx  Celtx is a scripting software that we used in order to create our rough drafts and final editions of the script to be used in our short film.  Celtx was very easy to use once understanding the technical side of script writing.  Celtx provided a very professional and clear script that was able to be easily followed when shooting for the film.  Furthermore, we are able to use this as an outlining method to see how the idea for our film looked overall and where to change dialogue in the final product.  Although, we planned two versions of the script, we used the script rather as a guideline and didn't always stick to it when we felt it was best to add or take away dialogue
  • 12. Facebook  We took advantage of the social networking site face book and created a group chat.  We were able to share ideas, any worries and concerns as well as update each other on the progress of tasks.  Furthermore we were able to plan the time and location for which we would be filming.  Face book was a convenient and fast way to communicate through various technologies such as mobile phone, laptops/computers, ipads etc.
  • 13. Word  For our shot list and risk assessment we used word with a premade template in order to easily organise and plan out shots to be used in the film.  Due to being familiar with word and the standard formatting of it, the shot list and risk assessment were made quickly without much hassle and uploaded to blogger through screenshots.

  • 16. Canon Legria HFG25  The Canon Legria HFG25 is a fairly standard, but high quality camera with some advanced features.  During filming we were able to get high definition content with good quality audio.  Features that were especially useful were auto focus and zoom.  The camera was very sturdy in regards to shakiness, the quality of video was relatively high even when moved or shaken.  Our film turned out very professional looking even though it wasn't necessarily a high end film camera.
  • 17. Canon Legria HFG25 (Continued)  However, it can be argued the camera didn't take well to darkness, video's would turn out slightly grainer than expected but were still usable and of a decent standard.  Furthermore, although usually stable, the audio didn't pick up on dialogue but rather on background noise , on a rare occasion.  Overall this camera was more useful than last years, the resolution being higher, audio and video quality being higher and finally larger storage space and battery power.
  • 18. Adobe Premier Pro  Adobe premiere pro was the main featuring factor of putting our film together as a highly rated editing software.  Premiere pro is a very reliable software with numerous features, varying from the standard cutting, cropping, adding music and effects, to more advanced uses such as split screens, voice over's, roll tool to name a few.  Thanks to our familiarity with the software due to last year's project and practice videos such as our continuity video, we are able to edit with ease knowing the basics of premiere pro , alongside developing our knowledge by testing, through trial and error, new techniques we'd previously failed to try.  Premier pro had many features that made our film look of high quality and of a professional standard.
  • 19. Adobe Premier Pro (Continued)  During arrangement of shots, the process was easy and took less time as we had already had a basic skill set.  Editing techniques such as jump cuts and elliptical editing were very easy to implement because of this.  Furthermore, the wide range of effects, made it easier to complete a clear, smooth flowing film.  As well as that title sequences, credits and music were straightforward in putting together, and adding on, due to the simplicity of the programme.  However, an issue with this software was that often sound would go missing from video clips as well as the programme crashing on a regular basis.  Although, the auto save feature was very practical, on more than one occasion, whole scenes had to be re edited to a high standard which was incredibly time consuming and a very unpredictable flaw in the video editing software.
  • 20. Photoshop  During the creation of our film poster we used the editing software Photoshop.  Due to our lack of experience in photo editing, it was a challenge that proved to be difficult.  However, learning through tutorials on YouTube and practicing using the various tools, we became more confident in the programme allowing us to create a good quality film poster with all the necessary components needed.  The programme got easier through trial and error and the numerous features allowed us to create a clear and professional film poster.  However, the programme was complex in some ways that basic features weren't available such as the simple 'undo' which would have been helpful for amateur users.

  • 23.  Throughout the evaluation process I used numerous media technologies.  This involved tools such as slide share, prezi and blogger.  Although were very useful resources they had their faults making the evaluation process slightly more difficult than it should have been.  All three had the same problems of crashing, or only working on a specific a specific search engine.  This was highly inconvenient as sometimes, slide share only functioned well on Firefox which I wasn't able to access at home creating a greater struggle.  Furthermore, prezi had its occasions were a file would crash without being saving, creating a more time consuming evaluation experience due to having to recreate work, which thankfully I had pre planned.  Reiterating my point from before, blogger not only crashed but it was difficult to upload images as the navigation wasn't as easy , as say a word document.  All technologies could have some improvements however, they were only minor faults that could be overlooked and outweighed by
