particular social groups?
Evaluation Question 2
2. Within our film, the main characters within the beginning are your average college students. The film
doesnât necessary follow the stereotypical image of 17 year oldâs as theyâre portrayed as âoutcastsâ. This
is established through the use of costume, the main character Charlie wears dark clothes used a mask
to hide his inner feelings. It portrays him as introverted and almost as if heâs hiding a secret.
Furthermore long dark clothes are used to give out a sense of suspicion, it makes the character stand
out so the audience is always aware heâs out of place, in a sense his costume is used as a hint
foreshadowing his dark personality. This gives off an idea that teenagers are more secretive and prefer
to say hidden rather than showing their true colours.
Representation of Young People
3. Our storyline follows three friends, which can support the stereotype of teenagers
being sociable. Another stereotype portrayed within the film would be that
teenagers tend to hang around in groups and have a sense of adventure due to a
constant setting of the outside. An long shot/establishing is used within the film to
show the proximity between the âfriendsâ and indicate how young people tend to
stick together rather than stay apart.
4. The main character, Charlie, subverts typical âmaleâ expectations as he tends to stay
quiet and out of the way whereas men are typically seen as being leaders with more
outgoing traits. However, the other male character , Tom , somewhat supports male
stereotypes as he tends to be more talkative and head strong. The typical
representation of women can also be seen to both support and subvert gender
norms, the character of Gemma has a friendly and kind personality and tends to not
be the one to start a conversation which supports the fact women are more passive.
However it can be argued that because Gemma swears when finding the body, she
subverts gender norms because itâs seen as a sign of aggression or âladdishâ
behaviour.
