How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Evaluation
Overview
• When creating our product we didn’t have a
specific target audience in mind however,
there is a wider range of audience which is
targeted. Our product is able to fit many
different social groups. The social groups
include class, age, gender and sexuality.
Class
• Our product is aimed at lower, working and middle class. As
the product which we produced is a thriller with the
characters being aged at teens therefore, this wouldn’t be
target for upper class.
• The class can be shown though the characters as well. The
male character in the opening of the film is wearing
trousers and a shirt with a smart jumper this would suggest
that the is middle class. The female character is wearing
leggings and is also wearing a pink backpack which could be
to be working class or lower as she doesn’t look smart or
profession. This may also be shown though the storyline as
the more higher class character murders the more lower
class character which could be seen as lower class citizens
have less power and rights.
Age
• The age of both of the characters in the opening
of our film teen or young adult. The female
character looks younger than the male which
could suggest less power and the older character
has authority over the younger character. The
viewer many guess that the younger character
did something wrong which the older character
has the power therefore was able to end her life.
As there is not a lot of background given to the
audience about the characters it allows them to
assume more which is able to create tension.
Gender
• There are two genders in our product. There is a
female character which is followed and then
murdered by the male character. This could be
seen as the female is seen as the weaker gender
and therefore wasn’t able to protect herself.
Another way which this could be viewed is
because the character was a female, that is the
reasoning behind why she was followed due to
the male character viewing her as an easy target
due to her gender. This is could be seen as Laura
Mulvey theory of the male gaze.
Sexuality
• The storyline is based on the two characters
used to being in a relationship and the reason
for the murder is because the male character
doesn’t forgive her and hasn’t got over how
the relationship has ended. This would both of
the two characters heterosexual. However,
when just watching the opening it isn’t told
that they were in a relationship allowing the
view to not know their sexuality.
