How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
Jake Afford
Class -
I have show class throughout my opening sequence through the character of
Fred. The way in which he is presented was to make him look like an individual
who is of a fairly decent class and is looks like a normal person of society. I didn’t
put too much thought into the costume of the character however, I did think about
having Fred wear attire that isn’t deemed or seen as clothing that is of the lower
class, as I want to have Fred being seen as a generic normal guy within the
sequence, as by coming across as a typical character, the audience have no
connection of relevance to them, which is what I want as the character is void.
Race -
The race I’m representing in my thriller is of the caucasian British male. My
production does not include any people of any other ethnicity or race, and thi isn’t
discriminating against other ethnicities. The people I’ve included in my sequence
are caucasian british ales, and this is down purely to the fact as these are the only
people I can get included into my thriller
Age -
My thriller appeals mainly to the younger audience, ages from around 18-29. This
is because of the genre of film my sequence is, is a action-thriller, which is
statistically what most younger audiences tend to watch when it comes to
watching a specific genre of film. Furthermore, the actors who have roles in the
thriller are of a young age and are also fitting into that younger audience range of
18-29 as they are both 18 years old. The reasoning behind picking a young cast is
because I believed it that a younger cast of actors would be more fitting and more
able to act the roles in which they have been cast for.
Gender -
My production represents men throughout as there are only men shown in the
sequence, therefore not allowing for any representation of women to be made. I
didn’t choose a woman for an acting role as I wanted a male killer, and a male
victim, on because I didn’t want to use a woman as a victim as it may be seen as
a misconception of showing that women are weak and always play the victim. I
didn’t choose a woman as the killer role, as I didn’t believe that a woman would
suit the role, in terms of how I want the role to be played with their mannerisms
and manner in which they come across and act towards other individuals. This is
not be discriminating against women, it’s just down to I don’t want a woman
playing the role, as a woman doesn’t suit the role, I believe.
Summary -
My thriller represents a younger social group of people, around 18-29 in which the
majority of my viewing audience will be male as they predominantly. The class I
am representing is also of the younger male middle class, as the character of Fred
is from a middle class background, however the background and class status of
the killer is unknown and can’t be determined.
