2. Magazines I analysed to help
understand the conventions of a
hip hop magazine
I think that my media product is aimed at the
same audience of vibe magazine and
wordplay. This is because my magazine
appeals to people who are current listening to
todays hip-hop, but not only American hip-
hop. This means my magazine will be unique
because it is going to be aimed at both British
hip-hop fans and American hip-hop fans.

3. In what ways does your media product,
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions?
My media product develops and challenges forms and conventions because I have
used different style title font and sizes to modern hip-hop magazines. An example of
this is usually hip-hop magazines use the name of the genre in the magazine title e.g.
“hip-hop weekly”. But I use a more unique name BaZe, BaZe is a form of a
convention because it isn’t normal since BaZe is not a word nor a name, the title also
has a capital letter in the middle of the word. This could mean when customer see
the magazine in the store they are more like to be curious and therefore likely to buy
it because the magazine seems different.
4. In what ways does your media
product, use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions?
Furthermore, my magazine uses conventions since I used a conventional
background for my magazine which is conventional as it other hip-hop
magazine such as XXL use it.
Another convention which I used was the colour scheme of a hip hp magazine
which is red, black and white. I developed on this convention by using it
through out my whole Advert.
In addition my characters consume was also conventional since he was wearing
black. This is because the black goes well with the background keeping the
colour scheme flowing.
Another convention on my cover page is the character facial reaction because
he looks serious and threatening. This is conventional since most artists do this
when they are on the cover of a magazine.
Conventionally artist look directly into the camera, I challenged this by tell my
artist to look to the side to show attitude to the audience. This is because it
makes his character look more realistic since modern day artist have rude
attitudes.
5. In what ways does your media
product, use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions?
On my content page I challenge conventions of a hip-hop
magazine by using more then one image. This is because usually
hip-hop magazine only have one large image with the hip-hop
artist on it. By challenging this convention I was able to add more
information about the editor and the main artist of the magazine.
I did this since it allowed me to keep the content page
entertaining for the readers.
I placed my content page title, this was conventional since most
hip-hop magazines also place their content page title at the top of
the page. I develop on this by also placing the my magazine name
on top of the content page which allowed the reader to also see
the brand name of the magazine which is usually hidden on the to
left corner.
6. In what ways does your media
product, use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions?
I used the conventions of keeping my color scheme from the previous
to pages which is conventional since most magazine keep the color
scheme through out the magazine.
My setting for my double page spread was conventional since most
artist like to take their images in either the a plain background or
their neighborhoods. I used the streets since it allowed me to appeal
to my target audience which were young teenagers.
I used a long shot to show both the surrounding as well as the
characters face which is conventional for double page spread.
I challenge the convention of hip hop stars wearing hat since it did not
allow me to present the characters face I decided to not use that as
part of the characters costume.
7. Conclusion
Overall I challenge, developed and use throughout my magazine as it allowed me to satisfy my
audience and persuade them to buy the magazine. Meaning by challenging, developing or using
conventions I was able to get my audience to get more attracted to my product. For example by
challenge wear the price of a magazine is usually placed my audience would be more like to buy it
since they see the cheap price first. In addition, by challenging, developing, and using convention I
was able to improve my magazine so it is more appealing to my target audience. This is good as it
meant that I was able to make a successful magazine for my target audience to enjoy since I took
the things they like into account from my questionnaire.
