The document summarizes how the student's media magazine product uses and develops conventions of real magazines. It discusses using a 3 color palette, rule of thirds layout, and mise en scene elements from researched magazines. The student aimed to replicate the layout, colors, and styles of an existing indie/rock magazine to create their own magazine in that genre. Specific elements discussed include the front cover design using rule of thirds, costume and color palette choices to fit the genre, replicating a professional contents page layout, and using a double page spread with a model's gaze and article quotes like magazines do. Font styles were chosen intentionally to match the magazine's genre and give importance to different elements.

1. Evaluation Question 1
In what way does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. Having researched a lot of different magazines in the different research stages of our productions for the magazine which
meant that we looked at a lot of different types of products and their conventions, we found out that some of these were bad
and some of them were good and gave me ideas. Within my research i found the 3 colour palette, rule of thirds and the use
of mise en scene very important. When i was developing my own product i had these 3 features in mind the most and i
made sure that they were used to the best of my ability. I tried to use a magazine that already existed and matched the
genre of mine to create my own using the layout and colours etc.
3. Rule Of Thirds
The front cover placed at the bottom left of this page is the one i used to influence mine which is placed next to the NME magazine. I
have tried to make sure that the layout of my magazine is very similar to the professional one, the rule of thirds used on the front
cover of this magazine are a main part of the layout. Both of the front covers have been broken down in similar ways, both
horizontally from top to bottom and vertically from top to bottom. On my magazine front cover the title is placed in the top left hand
corner of the magazine which is called the masthead (REVIVE), the name slightly disappears behind the models head which adds
effect. The masthead of mine is placed in the same place as the professional magazine which suggests that my magazine is going
to be well organised and it will be easy to navigate yourself around the front cover. The audience will naturally read from left to right
which is why I have placed most important information on the left hand side of the magazine because this is what they will read first.
My image is placed in the middle of my magazine front cover but moved slightly to the right because i didn’t want information
appearing on the left hand side to overlap with my image. My main article has been placed at the bottom of the front cover in larger
and bolder font so it stands out to the audience. The spacing between the letters is important because i needed to make sure what
was being stated was clear and easy to read. My magazine front cover has clearly been split into 3 sections vertically, the left hand
side being the most important of the information, the middle being the section involving the image and the ‘exclusive’ article
information and the right hand sideSide is extra information including other information on articles on the magazine and also the issue
number, price and date the magazine was issued.
4. Costume & Colour Palette
COSTUME
The costume of the models used throughout my magazine are just plain and simple. They reflect my idea of indie/rock music, my main
model is just wearing a plain black jumper and that links in with the colour palette of my magazine which i will talk about soon.I only
decided to use 2 models in my magazine because i felt like they both fit the genre of my magazine and have a good effect on the
information in my magazine. Dressing my models in plain and ‘boring’ clothes may suggest that the audience will be able to have more
of a connection with the magazine because if i dressed my models in a really specific way the audience may not dress in it may push
them away from feeling as though they should be involved with the magazine.
COLOUR PALETTE
The 3 main colours used within my magazine are black, white and red. I chose these colours because i feel as though they are quite
dull colours and are well associated with rock music. They fit in well with the ‘scary’ side of my magazine which is portrayed through
the use of makeup on the model used on the front cover. These 3 colours are used throughout and are actually the only colours I have
used. THere is a basic theme throughout the magazine and this will appeal to the audience. They are 3 colours that people can easily
relate themselves too.
5. Contents Page
The usual content pages use a rule of third idea but I have copied the professional layout which is more split into 2 sections rather than
3. My contents page is a lot more plain than what the other one looks like and that is because it fits in more with my plain layout. The
use of the different headings to separate the pages makes it easier for the reader to find the information they want. Each section is
clearly stated with what features in it, this makes it a lot easier for the audience, the images placed on the right hand side help the
audience get a feel of what the people look like that are featured in my magazine, they may find this appealing and it may make them
want to read on. I have tried to copy the layout of the professional layout but i have swapped it around a bit to make things fit. On this
contents page it seems to be a bit bland and boring because of the dead space, i tried to fill this but not everything would fit on my page
if i did that. I could have fit alot more information on this page like the professional one but because of the short amount of time i had
after changing my genre last minute i found this quite hard. The colour scheme etc is consistent throughout which makes it easier for
the audience to follow.
6. Double Page Spread
I used an NME double page spread an inspiration to mine, both mine and the NME one are placed in the bottom left of this
page. The image used on my double page spread can be classes as using synthetic personalisation because of the eyeline
of the model who is looking straight at the camera and it feels as though she is looking directly at you making you feel as
though you are involved which is good for the producer of the magazine because more people want to read it if they feel like
they are a part of it. The article on the left hand side is a question and answer interview with the artist who is stated, she has
just released her new album and is talking about how well she is doing with it, the questions are asked are ones that are
sent in by fans, this is also appealing to the fans because they could find out something they have always wanted to know
about this artist and could become a big fan. This could also be good for the artist because the audience could start to talk
about her and get her publicised. The title of my double page spread is a quote from the article which is appealing to the
audience because ‘what an experience’ is seen as a positive so they could want to read on. This creates the connection
between the reader and the artist because it sounds as though she is talking to them. There is quotes used in both of my
magazine and the professional one. I have swapped where i placed the image because i wanted the article to be seen as
more important because people read from left to right.
7. Font Style
The fonts i used throughout my magazine were all different but my mastheads for my front cover, contents page and double
page spread have all been capitalised because of the importance of them. The key font style is the one i used on my front
cover, this is the name of the magazine so it obviously needs to stand out to the audience and needs to be made very clear
and bold which is what i did. The font used on the front cover looks as though it is worn out which sort of reflects on my
magazine because of the rock genre, rock artists always seem to be quite qwerky and different, some seem to be quite old
too. The font on my masthead of my magazine is a different style and colour to those used on my contents page and
double page spread. This is because i believe it is the most important page and gives the best impression of the magazine,
if it had a bad impression then people wouldnt to buy it and it wouldn’t appeal to my audience. The variety of fonts
throughout my pages does differ, i use different styles of fonts to state different parts of the magazine. The font i used on
the front cover to state the ‘exclusive’ magazine was a one completely different to a one i used throughout the magazine
because i wanted it to stand out. The contrast of the red and white (top right hand corner) and the use of the pull quote
from within the article will hopefully appeal to the audience and hopefully make them understand what is going on within that
article. I used different fonts throughout my magazine because i didnt want people to get bored of reading words in the
same font, this may put them off and make them think that the magazine is boring.
