QUESTION 3
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Audience research feedback…
◦ To complete my audience research I created a questionnaire using surveymonkey.com. This
allowed me to ask a range of people – different ages and genders – what they preferred when it
came to documentaries. This helped me gain the information to decide what they like best and
what style of documentary would be most suited to them. I relied on this questionnaire so that I
could improve aspects that wouldn’t appeal to my target audience. For example the
questionnaire I conducted in my research section informed me on some key things concerning
my focused audience. We learned that the largest percentage of people who took part in my
questionnaire were aged between 17-19 and these individuals often watched documentaries –
in particular crime. This helped us make the final decision on what genre to chose, what channel
to base our production on and what kind of crime to base it on.
Audience feedback I received…
◦ Here are some of the answers I received from my documentary questionnaire. I considered all of
these when choosing my documentary genre and story line. I chose to have more ambient
sound than music to create a documentary style similar to ‘Crimewatch’ and to then include a
dominant factual voiceover alongside presenters. My feedback has enabled me to learn that my
audience feel that documentaries should have a meaning. Although my audience did say they
enjoyed watching reality documentaries they also said they likes them to be factual which is why
I decided to combine these factors and create a real life documentary that has a meaning and
teaching for the audience.

Ancillary task peer feedback…
◦ To gain an incite into what kind of route I should take for my ancillary tasks, I created drafts of
both the advert and dps. This enabled my to see what ideas my audience likes and what they
thought could be improved. To this I printed off my initial drafts and asked my peers to write
down any comments – negative and positive – that they had about my work. This was really
useful as instantly I could see what needed changing and what was really effective and worked
well to suit my audience. The feedback I received was mixed as I have many comments that my
peers loved about my work but also comments that gave me targets to improve.
◦ Overall, the feedback I received from my fellow peers really helped my improved my work and
instantly made me see where I went wrong and how to improve areas. It also allows me to gain
some inspiration from seeing what other people who were creating similar documentaries work.
Peer feedback…
◦ I received my initial peer feedback through creating a presentation on different styles of
documentaries (Reflexive, Expository, Interactive etc.) as a group we created this presentation
and presented it to the class to gain an incite into what style they would prefer. Once we had al
presented we made comments on each others and voted as to which style we all preferred the
most. This benefitted us as our class is made up of 17-18 years olds which is our target audience
so their opinions were of help to us in our research. In the end the class made it clear that
Expository documentaries were more appealing to them so that is why we decided to follow
their advice and create an expository documentary. We then conducted a focus group that
enabled us to questions an even smaller sample of people who took part in our questionnaire.
With out the audience feedback we received in our research and planning we wouldn’t have
been able to make a documentary that appealed to our chosen audience.
Peer feedback…
◦ Here are a few examples of the questions we asked our focus group…
Peer feedback results…
◦ Our focus group responses were extremely positive and allowed us decide on the following:
1. To create an expository documentary, with interviews, presenters and a reconstruction.
2. Have a dominant but factual voice over alongside the presenters.
3. Air between 8pm and 10pm – an ideal time for our target audience.
4. Be approx. an hour.
5. Follow characteristics similar to that of the institute channel 4 as it would be a one off special.
All of these choices where things we had already considered but finding out what our target audience
wanted was our main priority and therefore helped us make these decisions. By creating an expository
documentary we are appealing to the majority of our audience along with fitting in with our storyline
which too, appeals to our audience. As we wanted to make our documentary original and unique to us we
chose not to use the institution Channel 4 –as our audience specified- but create our own similar to that of
Channel 4. JME productions came from this as we combined our initials ‘Jamie, Mollie and Eve’ to create
our own institution. We felt that the short catchy name worked well as it fitted into existing instituions
such as ‘BBC’ and ‘ITV’ and gave our group an individual edge as well as being similar to Channel 4 like
our audience specified.
Overall…
◦ The feedback I received on my ancillary texts was extremely useful and allowed me to change and
correct my coursework in the areas that my peers felt were not as strong. By making these small
alterations and small mistakes I didn’t not notice, I learned how to improve my works by using online
tutorials to improve my Photoshop skills. I realised that my advertisement needed more text to inform
the audience and be as successful and effective as possible. That is why I included the relevant and
necessary information in my final product.
◦ The feedback I received on my documentary planning enabled me to give the majority of the
audience what they preferred to see in a documentary. Their opinion was really important to me as it
enhanced the reality of my documentary and gave me an understanding of what creating a moving
image is like, in the real world.
◦ From my peer feedback I learnt that I needed to adapt observations gained from different channel 4
documentaries to create my own to feature on this kind of channel. I understand that I have created a
documentary that is expository meaning I have re-enactments of the crime along with interviews and
presenters. This all enables the audience to listen to the voices of the victims and the real torture that
the family and friends of the victim had to endure.
