Q3: What have you learnt from
your audience feedback?
Questionnaire
• When I carried out my early research, I wanted a wide range of peoples
opinions. I did this by creating a questionnaire on survey monkey. I wanted to
see what type of documentary people wanted to see as well as the codes and
conventions that they would want to be involved within a documentary.
• The results from the questionnaire would enable me to gain and collect a range
of results, which then would enabled me to have a documentary suited towards
audience preference.
• The first question I asked was what their gender was, this enabled me to have a mixed gender making sure it
wasn’t gender biased. I did this because I wanted it to be a fair survey and it also would allow me to get differing
results based on what men prefer and what women prefer.
• Following from that question, I asked the audience to rank some different documentary genres that would
typically be shown on TV, with 1 being there preferred one and 6 being there least. Collecting these set of results
based on this question was really beneficial because then I could make a decision what genre my documentary
would be based on audience input.
• When it came to asking the audience what codes and conventions they would want to see in a documentary, it was
clear to say that the majority said archive footage and interviews, I took this data into account when producing my
own documentary making sure there were lots of interviews to give that variety and different opinions about
school life.
Pros and Cons of Questionnaires:
Advantages Disadvantages
Provide lots of data for analysis. Everyone answers the same questions making it
limited to opinions.
If anonymous perhaps more honest answers will be
provided.
Questions may be poorly worded or biased then the
data obtained might not give an accurate picture.
Easy to administer Difficult to allow people to expand on their answers
especially with closed questions.
A broad range of data can be collected. Respondents may not feel comfortable providing
answers that present themselves in a unfavourable
manner.
Can be administered remotely via online, mobile
phones, email etc..
Yougov
• Yougov was a website which I used as part of my research, it allowed me to
search specific genres and topics which then shows the specific demographic
with age, gender and location.
• This I found was very beneficial because it gave a deeper insight to specific
data based on audience consumptions. This, I think is very beneficial and allows
me to understand what demographic of what age suits what genre of
documentary.
Different ways that I collected audience research:
Different data collection Advantages Disadvantages
Questionnaires • Can be distributed on a wide scale.
• Easy to evaluate data.
• Can contain both open and closed
questions.
• Fake answers therefore inaccurate
results.
• Distribution method may collect
more of one type of audience than
another
Interviews • The interviewee is on their own
usually so they tell the truth.
• You get to properly
know/understand the participating
audience.
• Time consuming to enough people.
• Interviewee may feel
uncomfortable.
Focus Group • Thoroughly cover subjects as the
discussion gets different points of
view.
• Dominant characters influence
other participants so they do not
voice their own opinion.
• Not everyone expresses their
opinion.
Peer feedback • Gives a variety of opinions.
• Encourages student involvement.
• May put false answers.
• May ‘gang up’ on one individual.
Ancillary Tasks and Documentary:
• In terms of my ancillary tasks, I produced a lot of drafts, to help me decide what design was the most effective and
professional.
• I felt that peer feedback was important for my drafts as it could enable me to see which was best and what didn’t
work. The feedback given from my peers was beneficial because it gave me feedback based on what needed
improving.
• For peer feedback, I decided to get opinions from people in my class. I did this by printing my designs and told them
to write down areas which they didn’t like, what didn’t look effective and what needed changing. Overall I felt this
was really useful as the advice given to me about making adjustments to my products allowed me to have an
effective product for all tasks.
• Furthermore, I also interviewed my family members about there thoughts of the draft ancillary tasks and the final
products and what they think improved what worked, what didn’t, this ultimately gave me a wider range of peoples
opinions to enable me to sui my product to audience.
• However, I did feel that feedback from my documentary was the most significant because this was the main product
that I was producing and editing, with the documentary feedback my class watched what I had made so far and then
they gave feedback based on improvements. The advice given was very useful because it enabled me to overall
produce a product suited again for audience needs.
