Evaluation q2
1. Q2: How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
Angel Adeyelu
2. Themes
• The main theme used within our music video would be
happiness, energy colour, and unison this is illustrated
through camera work, mise-en-scene and editing. These
themes appear throughout the music video, such as the
continuous dance routine shown throughout the whole
video. There is a consistent theme of dance and energy
showing the audience that the music video is performance
based allowing them to relax and enjoy the show. Mise en
scene is used through the location (leake street) which is
heavily known for its “urban feel” this is what was aiming
for as our song of choice has a very urban and fresh feel
which correlates well through the scenery (graffiti, outdoor
locations and passers by which gave us that natural element
that can relate and appeal to many individuals from our
target audience of teenagers 13+.
3. The theme of freedom and individuality is sustained in
the photography of the CD digipak (front cover, back
cover, inside of photo book album) and advertisements
using the leake street location to shoot. The theme of
dance and is evident in the video through the artist's
body language and facial expressions, towards the
dancer and when the artist is shot alone. The artist is
made to look attractive through the clothes he’s wearing
and the eye contact he makes with the viewers and the
dancers to attract the female demographic by his
powerful stance used in both the CD digipack and the
music video.
4. Promotion Methods:
Extending the Package in the Real World
To gain recognition in the real world, there would be some teaser
images released on the artist’s social media page enticing a male
and female audience seeing a talented artist, who is showcasing
their talent and musical fluidity to an audience.
However, using social media to promote our music video can be
challenging as it can take some time to build a following meaning
the music video many not get a good amount of reception,
lowering the chances of recognition. However, using social media
can be a beneficial way to promote our music video and album as
fans who follow the artist will notice the music video and album. A.
Social media is still growing the number of social media outlets are
increasing dramatically meaning there is a wide variety of platforms
such as Facebook, Instagram and twitter networks with large
audiences from around the world enabling us to share our teaser
images, to a broad spectrum of people.
5. House style
My colour scheme for my print products are the colours
black, orange and white. These colours run throughout my
print products, mimicking real media products, making the
print products correlate with one another, as if a part of a set.
The colours black, and white also appear within our music
video as well as many other colours, such as the graffiti walls
of leake street. In addition to the colour scheme, the
typographic features, such as the artist tag line and album
title are maintained throughout the print products, enabling
synergy to continue throughout the print products and the
recording label branding the artist. The font styles are
maintained throughout, creating a correlation between the
print products making it identifiable to the audience. The font
of the artist's name/tag line is white and bold the purpose of
this was to reflect the boldness in dance moves and energy
presented in the music video.
6. Layout
• The layout of the print products, maintain a
uniformed order which can be interpreted as quirky
through the placement of text one under another,
giving it a playful look reflects the playful content
within the album, which consists of performance
and rapping. It also simple as the typographic
features are allocated altogether, separating the
photography from the typographic features.
7. Imagery: Scenery
The music video expands on the number of locations
used. The use of more locations in the music video
represents the stages that the artist goes through to
give the audience something interesting to view.
Additionally, the variations in location add
movement and energy to the music video and a
sense of self-discovery. As the photography takes
place in the streets of leake street central London, it
reinforcing the idea that the streets are a place the
artist finds freedom and happiness.
8. Print Products
Critical Theory
Throughout our music video and print products critical
theory that can applied to both the music video and print
products, the Postmodern theory of 'Breaking the Fourth
Wall', as the artist maintains eye-contact with the
camera throughout the music video and the
photography for the print products. This created
intimacy and enabled us to deliver the emotions of the
artist effectively to the audience. The use of an attractive
artist and dancers reinforced Goodwin's theory of an
artist who is both handsome and talented, who produces
music which holds great significance to people in real
life.
