Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The themes we chose for this project were nature and future. We chose these two
themes because they link together quite well and heavily linked to our target
audience. The target audience was 16-24 and due to our primary research, which
we conducted through a survey, we were able to deduct that the people in this age
range are excited and interested as to what the future could hold. We decided
another theme to run alongside it that makes sense would be nature, as nature is
currently evolving so we thought it would be interesting to talk about how it will be
in the future.
What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
For our primary research, we did a few questionnaires to get some results from our
target audience directly. We asked questions such as, age and gender then also
asked about their favourite social media and how much time they spent on it. We
then linked these to find out what age group and gender use which types of social
media the most to help tailor our project towards what they are most likely to use.
When looking at secondary research we researched more into the target audience
across the UK to find out certain colour themes, logo design and the content of
certain popular social media sites. We did a lot of research on our demographic as
this was the main part of the project, trying to appeal to an audience, so we had to
make sure we chose the right options for how to construct our website.
How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
One of the main ways we developed our ideas was by creating an audience profile
which allowed us to lay out all our ideas and research to form a final plan as to who
our target audience is and how we can approach production to appeal to our target
audience. In order to tailor our production towards our target audience, we had to
think about certain issues that they can relate to and be interested in so we can
discuss them without the audience losing interest. The themes we chose were
because of the audience and what we felt would be most interesting to them.
What was the outcome of the project/task?
The outcome of the project (in my opinion) came out well and exactly how we
intended it to. With the large amounts of research into our target audience and
demographic, it massively helped, because we knew the boundaries, we had to
work in. We all had our own talents and out own specialties, so when we came to
production, we were all able to contribute to make a fantastic piece as all our skills
were unique.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before
you started?
At first, I was a little confused by the project and didn’t completely understand the
purpose and how to execute this project but once I grasped more understanding
about the fact that it was more focused on tailoring the product around the
audience and learning how to properly appeal to a specific audience. The further
into the project I got, the more I understood about it and the easier it became. It
was also difficult to think of ideas for production as we were quite restricted to
what we could do as our demographic was mainly chosen for us, then our themes,
restricted us even more.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc.?
This project was a group project, so there were three of us working on this project
which was helpful as it allowed us to combine our brains and let our ideas bounce
off each other. We all had a similar idea and understanding about the theme of the
project but different ideas about how to approach it and create the pieces of
media. This worked out quite well as we were able to create a diverse environment
where we all had different ideas and that is like the content we were aiming to
create. This made the research section of the project much easier, as we were able
to split up tasks between the three of us, then combining all our information
together.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• The project had a teamwork element to it, so we had to get used to working as a
team and delegating jobs between each other which is an extremely useful skill
to have.
• I learnt how to use a green screen and how to edit things on to it, which will
prove to be useful when editing other media pieces. I also did a new style of
moving image in the form of a mockumentary which was quite fun to make but
also quite easy as it wasn’t as serious.
• I learnt more about developing a good and effective website for a specific target
audience. I want to create a website for my FMP so this was good practice, so I
could get used to using wix.
What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• We struggled originally to think of a theme as our demographic was already given
to us, we wanted to create something informative and interesting at the same
time. We found most of the themes couldn’t link together well enough, until we
settled on nature and future.
• When it came to production, I was unsure on what the demographic would enjoy
watching whilst also learning at the same time, so I decided to make a
mockumentary so I could combine the both, but it took a while for me to produce
this idea.
• Communication was at times, a bit difficult as one of our members was working
from home so sometimes, we would be working on the same piece of research
without knowing.
How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
We wanted to make sure our brand was representing young people and creating an
environment for them to share and communicate. We did this by creating a
welcoming website with entertaining and enjoyable content on it. We chose the
colours for our logo based on research that we compiled, that stated, these are the
colours that older teenagers/young adults feel comfortable and welcomed by. We
also made sure we looked at other popular social media sites that our demographic
use, to see what they do and why its so effective so we can get some inspiration as
to what they like to use.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc. as well]
I feel like my communication skills have improved as we had to work in a team to
complete this project, so we had to work on our communication skills so we could
effectively create a good media product by all using our unique skills and ideas. I
also learnt more editing skills on premiere pro as I used a green screen for the first
time, so I learnt how it works and how to replace the green with an image of my
choice. I also feel like I learnt certain small skills from the other people in my team,
such as certain planning, research and production skills that helped me complete
this project and will most likely help me complete my FMP.
What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
With our project, we wanted to create a feeling of being welcomed and
acceptance, so people would be confident to socialize, branch out and share. I think
we did a good job in doing so, as we did plenty of research, so we were able to find
out what the demographic are interested in and what keeps them entertained.
There were mixed opinions from person to person, so we tried to make the
platform and the content within, as diverse as possible to accommodate everyone.
What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
The small amount of feedback we got was mainly quite positive. We got comments
saying the website is easy to use and simple to navigate. People also liked the tour
video on the homepage as it allowed them to find out about the whole website
without having the trouble of trying to find everything themselves. They liked the
principal of the website, being able to communicate with friends, share work and
give each other feedback so that they can improve. A couple of areas that could be
improved would be, the quality of the tour video, we were told the video was
extremely useful, but the quality was quite poor, and that was due to technical
issues we couldn’t seem to fix. Another thing that was noticed, was that the colour
theme throughout the logo didn’t seem to reflect through the website, I totally
agree with this and feel that we could have included that more.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
I feel like maybe my communication skills could be slightly improved as this is our
first project working as a team, so I’m not used to delegating jobs and working with
other people but as the project progressed, so did these skills but I feel there is still
a bit of room for improvement. My time management is one of my biggest issues,
as I’m not very good at planning out what I need to do each day and certain time
slots I need to give myself to make sure I get the work done in a good time and
don’t miss the deadlines.
