This document provides an overview of evaluation and management of ataxic disorders for physicians. It discusses the characteristics, phenotypes, and evaluation of ataxia. For evaluation, it recommends a neurological exam supplemented by imaging and electrophysiological testing to determine the cause and localization. Causes of ataxia can be genetic (autosomal dominant, recessive, X-linked, mitochondrial), acquired (vascular, infectious, paraneoplastic, metabolic, toxic), or idiopathic. Management is primarily rehabilitation with some medications for symptoms.
