How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Front Cover.
Body Language:
The artist has her hands in her
hands on her hips and looking
down at the camera, this is
effective as it makes her look
powerful and important to the
magazine.
Facial Expressions:
The artist has a serious facial
expression which makes her
look serious and shows she
means business, it ties in well
with the body language too
which makes her look powerful.
Costume:
I chose to dress the artist in an
Adidas jumper as that is common
dress of the hip hop genre. I also
made her wear a bucket hat as
that is new common dress
coming into hip hop fashion. The
hoop earrings and nose piercing
give her a intimidating look and
also make her look powerful.
Use of Language:
The language I used has a hip
hop music lexical field. For
example ‘lord of the mics’ and
‘Milla Killa tour’ have musical
connotations and would only be
found in music magazines. This
is effective as it links to the
genre of the magazine and
clearly shows the reader what
the magazine is about.
Props:
I decided to not use any props as
I wanted to challenge general hip
hop magazine conventions, I think
without props it looks lets
cluttered and more professional.
Contents Page.
Body language:
The artist has her hands in her
pockets which gives her a young
urban street look which is what a lot
of hip hop is about. This is effective
as it makes the magazine look hip
hop based.
Facial expressions:
The artist has a serious facial
expression, this is effective as it
makes her look like she's serious
about her music and links to the
genre of hip hop.
Costume:
She wearing a bucket hat and
Adidas jumper which also makes
her look street, young and urban.
This is effective as it links to the
genre and links to her personally
as she is a upcoming rap artist.
She's also wearing mostly black
which sticks to the main color
conventions of hip hop magazines
which is effective as it makes her
look like a real artist in a real hip
hop magazine.
Props:
I chose not to use any props and
just focus the readers attention to
the singer.
Use of language:
I chose to use each to
understand language in short
snappy sentences. For example
‘hot or not’, this is effective as its
quick and easy to understand for
the reader without them having
to read through it thoroughly.
Race.
I chose to use a Jamaican model to
act as my up and coming UK hip hop
artist as this is the common
representation of current hip hop
artists. When I researched other hip
hop magazines I noticed that the
majority of the artists used were of
this origin, this is effective as it makes
my hip hop magazine fit into common
conventions of actual hip hop
magazines.
Age and Gender.
I chose to use a young 17 year old female as it
suits the audience I am targeting. It appeals
most to young girls who aspire to be like her
‘creebo’. This is effective as young girls are
more likely to buy the magazine if it features
the favorite artists who they also look up to.
