3. Action Thriller
Conventions as they keep
Enigmas- Enigmas are found in thrillers
the audience invested in the film, and create tension
as the search for answers can lead to shocking
consequences. In our film the Enigma is the identity of
the caller.
Action- thrillers have action to keep the audience on
the edge, will the hero survive? Who will die? In our
film the action is created by the inclusion of haste, as
the hero is racing against time to save his wife, the
action also comes from the wife's struggle, as we see
her attempting to escape from her captive. The
inclusion of the “struggle” between the hero ad villain
also has action, as the audience fear who is going to
survive!
4. Conventions in our Plot.
Our plot closely follows Propp’s Character theory, as we have 5 out of the 7
charter types,
The villain – The caller
The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest) in this case it is the villain
The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
Mikes wife, needs to be rescued
The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off) In
this case once again it is the villain
The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess Mike, the
hero who’s trying to save his wife
Because the villain has more than one role, it makes the film follow the
conventions of the typical characters, but allows for a “twist” to be made, because
the villain I also helping our hero reach his objectives for his own motives. Placing
a twist on Propp's theory.
5. Conventions in the
camera and Editing
With the camera work, we needed to use lots of shots, and used different angles
to display different emotions, for example the villain has a lot of low angle shots,
to make him took dominant, and powerful, and the use of a CCTV camera effect
panning across creates uncertainty within the audience, as it shows that mike is
being watched.
The music also hold key importance, as sound can create tension and improve
scenes dramatically. For example in lord of the rings, the music during battles is
loud and dramatic. But other films do not make such use with its musical score,
for example the birds only uses sound effects, mainly of birds crowing, thus hat
creates tension within the own right, by using carefully-calculated silence to
increase the terror of an obviously far-fetched situation.
In our film, we did use music to sow the cruelty of the villain, and to make haste
with the hero’s actions, as he needs to hurry up in order to save the day. We
also have use of tragic music at the end, so show the upset and failure of our
hero. The music hopefully will get a reaction from our audience to, leaving them
with a empy feeling inside.
6. Mise en scene
Mise en scene in our film had to reflect the conventions of a action
thriller, so for the shots od the building, we used a slick modern building,
like most action films use, to show the modern “high tech” appearance
the building creates.
We also made use of the lighting for the scene where the villain and the
hero meat, as we the hero enters the room there is no light, apart from
the low key lighting from his laptop screen, making the moment more
tense as the audience cannot see anything else within the shot as it has
lost of shadows and
7. How my poster used
conventions
My poster used the typical features of a action thriller
because it had a dark color scheme, that are found on
most thriller posters, a dark colors suit the genre, as
they create a action effect.
I also maid use of creating an enigma, by placing a
shallot on the image, as it makes the audience curious
about who
