Lovefield analysis
1. Camerawork
This is an establishing shot. It sets the location of the short film
which is seen as empty but pretty wheat fields. The fields are
empty and the way in which the camera moves gives the audience
the impressions that something bad might occur however the title
gives of a different impression that the film may just be a basic
love story.
2.
3. The camera uses slow movements.
This creates tension. The scene in
which the camera is moving and
shows significant props such as the
mobile phone and bloody cloth
makes it more intense the slower
the camera is moving. As it moves
slower it reaches the point of
seeing the woman's foot which
instantly makes the viewer jump to
conclusions. This is panning.
The camera shot above is effective
as it clearly shows the facial
expressions of the man. It shows him
looking scared or as if he is guilty of
something. It also shows that
whatever he is looking at is on the
ground due to the direction of where
he is looking.
To the right is also a close up shot of
the woman's foot which makes it
more dramatic.
4. Sound
When thinking about sound the creaking of the moving sign
shows a typical convention of a thriller or horror. This is due to
it being the only sound heard in the silence. This is diegetic
sound as is used to build tension and create suspense. The
mobile phone ringing is also a use of diegetic sound. It is
abandoned in a field therefore this gives the audience the
impression that something bad is going to happen. Other
elements of sound used include the woman screaming. The
idea that she can not be seen but can be heard creates
tension for the viewer.
5. Another form of sound used is the sound of the crow. This
sound is repeatedly used throughout the film. It is diegetic
sound. The sound of the crow fits in to the story line. As man
rushed to his car the crow then becomes louder and created
tension. It almost represents the idea that the sound of the
crow may be heard from a distance to inform other people
what is happening.
6. Mise-En-Scene
Costume - The man shown wearing
dungarees and a baseball cap looks
‘dirty’ therefore this gives of the
impression that he is a suspicious
character. The tattoo on the man’s
arm also shows that he is perhaps
being portrayed as a villain.
Props – the props used
include the mobile phone,
bloody cloth and the bin
bag
7. The black crow is significant throughout the short
film. Black crows often represent ‘ bad luck’
therefore this makes the viewer feel uneasy. The
crow is repeatedly shown which represents the
build up. The creaking sign shown also has the
number ’13’ on it. The number 13 is also
considered to be unlucky therefore this also
shows that something negative may happen.
Bin bag - when we see the bin bag
the man pulls out from the car
boot, the audience will immediately
think it’s so he can hide/cover the
body. This show also shows the car
boot being opened. The man is in a
rush to open the car boot which
gives of the instant assumption that
he is going to perhaps hide a body
in the car. It also shows the
location which is an aspect of
mise-en-scene. The old car is
parked up on the side of an empty
road alongside the fields.
8. Editing
Fade transitions, wheat image of the
fields moulds into one another. This
occurs slowly to build the tension.
Editing and the sound are used
together.
At the end scene the scene becomes
lighter. I believe that this has been
edited to represent the more happy
Fast cut shots are also used atmosphere in which the baby is born.
as a form of editing. The
scene where it shows the
man at the car cuts back to a
shot of the black crow. This
may leave the viewer in
confusion and can create
suspense.
9. Genre and Conventions
At the start of the film, it is expected that the film will be a thriller or
horror. This is due to it following typical conventions such as the
creaking noises, deserted atmosphere and strange man. The bloody
cloth in the field and random ringing mobile phone are also typical
conventions of thrillers or horrors however the film Is not your typical
thriller/horror as at the end of the film it takes an extreme turn in which
the storyline is not what the viewer will expect. It has a more happy
outcome.
